Hi Deana and Phil!! I worked at a bakery in the US. They make Spritzkuchen, but they are called French Crullers (or just Crullers) and come frosted in the white powdered sugar glaze, strawberry glaze, or chocolate frosting. And Pfannkuchen (or as folks outside Berlin call them, "Berliner") are called Bismarcks in the US. There are many other overlaps of baked goods we have here that are also in the US under different names and sometimes with a slightly different taste and/or consistency, which leads me to donuts...
I understand what Deana means about the donuts not being the same as in the US. It's not that you can't find yummy donuts in Germany, but the dough and the preparation here are slightly different. There are generally two types of doughs for donuts in the US - yeast raised and cake. A cake donut is just like it sounds. It has the consistency of cake. However, the yeast raised donut is usually lighter and more airy due to letting the dough rise in a proofer (hence the name 'raised donut'). Yeast donuts must be allowed to rise slowly and at the exact right temperature in the proof box. The ones in Germany are still good, but they aren't yeast raised donuts. The dough is a bit denser with a consistency somewhere between bread and cake. It's as if it's a cross between a cake and a raised donut. Also, raised donuts (with holes) are not filled in the US due to the dough not being dense enough to withstand the filling. Long johns are also made from a yeast raised dough, but they are proofed slightly differently than the yeast raised donuts with holes allowing them to then be filled later.
That all being said... baked goods (sweet or savory, German or US) are delicious, if made well. 😊 Thanks for your videos! I gain weight just watching you guys eat all these different things! 😂

Yes. I grew up with a Pastry Chef . He was born in 1937 and grew up during WW2 and growing up I have had quite a few of the item here today. People either like them or not. I have all his recipe's and even have 2 that are written in german. He apprenticed over in germany then moved to Canada in 1954 and then moved to s after marriage to my mother in 1966. Thank you for this video brought back some memories growing up in 70's and 80's eating some of these. The german cakes are to die for I think. I have Cherries soaking in a a chocolate vodka for a black forrest cake.

Bakeries in Germany did'nt sell less because of covid19... There are lines of people waiting to buy cake and stuff in front of most bakeries every sunday afternoon... because all the Cafés are closed people are buying Fake and drink coffee at home now.. or they buy coffee to go and cake at bakeries and eat/ drink at the car or in the next Park....

    • @AV-we6wo
      @AV-we6wo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@blackforest_fairy I guess that depends. Some bakeries close to subway or train stations or in business centres suffered, because many people buy sandwiches or other snacks on their way to work or during lunch break, and the last months quite a lot of these regular customers have been working from home.

Might at least be the local name throughout Bavaria or at least Franconia. Also some more insight - usually the thin dough is similar to that of an ice cream cone and should be chocolate coated on the inside as well. Also, as far as I remember, there whipped cream is spiced up with a little bit of cinnamon.

I really like Berliner, Laugenecken, Croissants, Puddingschnecken, Schweineöhrchen or several Körnerbrötchen a lot.
I really love savary and sweet🤗
    Or everything with Mohn.
I'm a huge fan of bakerys but actually not of bread in general, I love to eat wraps, Bagels etc in contrast to bread.
My family loves bread for breakfast and dinner so I used to change it several times to not get tired of it at all. I know there are several types of bread and we change it regularly.

We have some great bakeries here because of the large number of German people who came here from around 1840. Many of us descendants. We also had Cornish miners that came here to mine copper.

They are a lot more common than saying they are Czech. You can find variations of them in many countries with different traditions around it. Especially in areas controlled or influenced by the Holy Roman and Austro-Hungarian empires

@@S_Black I meant plum jam, powidl, that's of czech origin.

Sugar and rasberry filling over here in NRW. Thus said, a local bakery offers its own variant which is filled with cherrys. I LOVE them.

I always enjoyed the "prank edition Berliner" for Fasching as well. Among the plum filled ones, there was usually one filled with mustard. The last time we got these (I was still a child) my father's boss picked the one with the mustard. Karma. :D

I grew up in Germany, dad was in the US Army so was there from ‘83-92. First lived in Pirmasean and then Mainz. Went to high school in Wiesbaden. Not sure where you are exactly but one bakery item I remember is Dampfnudel. Can you get that in your area? Also would be curious to see what Deana thinks of it.

The Spritzkuchen are called Schmalzkringel here in NRW and are my favorite thing (if the aren't stale and dry)! I'd chose them over donuts every time! Also it triggered me that Puddingbrezel are called Puddingschnecke over there xD

I miss Spritzkuchen so much. I love it, but obv, not available in England. I used to always go to a local bakery, they had very good donuts, still a bit oily (most donuts are rather dry) and some chocolate on top. Also like chocolate croissants, but every bakery does them differently, so it depends

So it's perhaps kind of weird, but my mother is from Verona, Italy, however we regularly would go to a local German bakery named Zugspitze to get laugenbrötchen mainly because there were no good Italian bakeries, and she always said the Germans were fantastic bakers. We would make sandwiches with them using some Mayo and either good german or Italian salami, or my favorite, prosciutto crudo. It wasn't cheap but man I looked forward to it as a kid when we did it.
