MORE GERMAN CANDY! With everything going on and supermarkets being sold out of certain items, we've noticed some items remain fully stocked, like candy! We wanted to try some of the "off brand" candy that we've seen at ALDI and Netto. We ended up finding some good budget options for us! Those store brands are often produced by brand companies (not necessarily the ones they compete with though). Basically on the same assembly lines
Many of the "off-brand" products from Aldi are literally made by the same factory. They won't even switch the ingredients, they just change to the new wrapping with another name mid production.
This is true for many of the Aldi stuff without any brand on them. Also, milk and milk products like yogurt come from a few large processing factories, they will also switch from Aldi label to the expensive Edeka or Rewe label in the middle of filling it into the packaging.

most of the products taste somewhat different than the brand name.
Well, many ALDI products with a no-name are even better in taste, such as: meat salad or cold cuts.
My favorite candy is "KNOPPERS".

Hello Deana and Phil,
it is common that the big store chains like ALDI,EDEKA , LIDEL have some "Hausmarken" (i would literally translate it as "company related brands").
Mostly these producs are sold under certain brands (Choccour; Gut&Günstig etc.).
Sometimes they are just sold under an "fantasy brand" from the company which is responsible for the packing of the goods. Most important is - these products are often produced produced from the same companies (even in the same plants) than the name brand producs.
For excample the ALDI washing powder "Almat" is the same item (just slight difference in smell) than the "Somat" from Henkel (is produced in the same plant).
There are some lists in the net which No-name producs are literally brand name producs in different package.

I love "Reeses Peanut Buttercups" from the US (this mixture of chocolate and peanutbutter makes addicted, I could eat a kilogram!). In Germany you mostly will not find it in stores, but you can order it in the Internet.
You forgot the no name "Schoko-Küsse" from Aldi (one says there is Dickmann behind) in comparison with "real" Dickmanns. :-)

One question: Knoppers chilled, right out of the fridge or at room temp? I just discovered that chilled Knoppers is awe.some. 🤯 and thought of this video.
Thank you, Phil! You're so right, Duplo IS too underrated. What I do love the most about it is that its sweetness is very light. The other bars are mostly way to sweet, in my opinion.

I am living in the States now and am definitely missing most of the "Kinder" prodcuts, such as Kinder Schoko Bon and Kinder Riegel.
Another thing: For some reason, I don't see Mars here in the States, no matter to which grocery store I go (Walmart, Wegmans, Harris Teeter). I prefer it to Snickers, which I see everywhere.🙃

From the big name candy bars, i like NUTS the most. An old german candy bars, which is not available anymore was my favorite as a child, called Banyo.
My favourite candy bar is Nuts - but I've never seen a knockoff version of it... so I always have to go for the good stuff 😋

Yeah the Milk Jumbo are good I bought them at Aldi in Berlin too. There are a lot of Candy that is actually really good .Off Brand does not mean is not good.Plus if there is Stressors around like that Virus ,a good cup of coffee and a candy bar (s) make a big difference .And you can bake with them too.I bought Kit Kat Birthday cake flavor .Mmmmh,that was " voll lecker"😸😸😸

Would be a good idea to present the price at the same base, for example 100g. The reproduction versions mostly have more fill weight.

Milky Way Dark (USA) is my favorite candy bar.
U have to try the "Milch Mäuse" also from Aldi, its the same brand like the "Milch Jumbo", these are comparable to Schoko Bons.

I think a better comparison to Kinderriegel would be the milk bars with the cow on the package from Aldi. (I believe 1.19€ or something around that prize range) I love them ♥

Knoppers are brilliant! LIDL sells them here in Ireland.
My favorit Brand is ,,Moser Roth" Edel Bitter, 85% Cacao. This Brand is from Berlin, and this from ALDI.

A friend of mine worked for a famous German cookie company while in college; she told me they literally packaged the same stuff for the brand name on one day and for the Aldi off-brand version on another.

Kitkat is good. German does have the famous candy - gummy candy, bear shape. But they don't have luxury brand of Chocolate, Belgian has several.
My favorite candy of the ones you mentioned is definitely Snickers and Milky Way is a close second. My favorite brand in general is Kinder.

When I was a kid growing up in Germany, Twix was called Raider.

I think a connecting thread between several of the off-brand bars is that they use a cheaper, fattier chocolate. It's lighter in colour, softer, and melts quicker. You can see in several of the knock-off bars that they try to mimic surface details of the originals but look slightly “mushier”, because the cheap chocolate can't hold the shape as well.
The other "Kinder Schokolade Riegel" in just the tinfoil wrap taste a lot better than the ones you´ve bought in the plastic wraper, they got a better schokolade to milk cream ratio.
I was surprised how good some of those were! But I love the real Knoppers and the cheap one unfortunately was not good at all. :D

As a child I really liked Kinder Country 😅 and now I really like Giotto (Ferrero Rocher)

Snickers is the best of the Mars chocolate bars.But for a while Bounty was absolutely my favorite. Hanuta and Knoppers are both nice, Kinder Riegel is a way better than Duplo in my opinion. And I think Kinder Schokolade and Kinder Riegel are pretty similar, but Kinder Schokolade isn't that big, so it has less milk filling but it tastes more of vanilla.
KitKats are made using the type of chocolate that Americans prefer ... Hershey's taste 🍫
It's not the taste we Europeans like, it seems almost like 3 month old stale sour chocolate that went "off" ... They even tried a new recipe, but we still don't really go for it 😐

Hershey was the first to use fresh milk instead of powdered milk like what the Europeans used for milk Chocolate, but Mr. Hershey tasted one of the first iterations before the process was fully developed, but Mr. Hershey said he liked it and don't change the process(Food That Built America on the History Channel). I like Green&Black's 70% chocolate.

I don't like Mars, Snickers and Twix. But out of these three I would choose Twix. I like (the european) Milky Way and Kitkat the most. Phil should try the "Lindt Lindor Kugeln". Just yesterday I saw a video about how brand loyal americans are. Seems to be the same with german, otherwise there would not be Snickers right next to the cheaper peanut bits.

I had the same experience with the off brand Hanuta from Lidl. It was so bad.
Candy in the time of pestilence sounds right to me. American candy: 1) Dove dark chocolate with almonds are very satisfying. 2) Snickers 3) Reese's 4) Peppermint Patties, small size with a greater chocolate/peppermint ratio. Chateau and Moser-Roth, both are ALDI chocolate brands belong to Storck (Knoppers, Toffifee, Super Dickmann's, Werther's Origial, Nimm 2).
So I would expect quality from them.
