Because it’s not everybody’s favorite! It’s a good game but it’s overrated! Some prefer DS, Double Dash, 8, or even 7! Some people have unpopular opinions! My favorite is Double Dash. Just get over it and accept it.
Mark Rezk Allow me to defend the Battle Mode a bit. Yes on race tracks it is no fun, but the System behind that was genius. In scoring points, aggressive acting got rewarded, aswell defensive acting due to the survival part. And on Yoshis Valley it worked out well. But Double Dash is my number 2
Battle Mode was awful as a feature ruined in 8, but even without that, 8 remains overwhelmingly perfect: gliding, underwater, customisation, vehicle uniqueness, broad level selection and great designs.
Played it again yesterday. I had so much fun, but /i played 12 races and was shot down from top to bottom at the last moment 8 times! And no 2P GP is a baffling, awfull choice! Especially when you lock so many characters and 4 cupse behind that GP wall!
1) Grand Prix is only single player. Given how much unlockable content is unlocked only via Grand Prix, it was a terrible choice to do away with 2 player GP. 2) (a personal complaint) In earlier titles like 64 and DD, karts may have different stats but on the whole they controlled mostly the same. In Wii, the bikes pretty much circumvent the need for karts and many of the fastest bikes (like the flame runner) control so much different from any of the other vehicles, particularly when turning. 3) A huge one: the worst RNG item harassment of all the kart games. Everyone is aware of this and only the diehards defend its unreasonable "party game" style torture. While I certainly understand the need and fun of having power-ups in Mario Kart, this is just sheer overkill. Personally the more I'm in action (racing, going fast, and winning off of good skill/ minimal error) the more fun I have. Getting knocked excessively by something outside of my control is just not satisfying. 4) A corollary to #3: In Mario Kart 64, people complained about rubber banding AI, but this is counter-balanced by the AI not being able to use many of the items the players can use. In Mario Kart Double Dash, rubber-banding is less prevalent, but they can use any items you can use (which can be aggravating for speed runners). Mario Kart Wii combines rubber-banding with terrible item AI. 5) The courses aren't really that memorable, and neither is the music. 6) A small point to me, but many have noted that while previous entries (and 8) featured a graphical upgrade, Wii hardly looks much improved over Double Dash. 7) Don't know if it's just me, but Wii feels so sluggish! To put times into perspective by looking at the top: The world record for Sherbet Land (N64): 1:36"03 Record for the Wii remake: 2:04"253 The world record for Mario Raceway (N64): 1:12"97 Record for the Wii remake: 1:41"636 The world record for Waluigi Stadium (GCN): 1:35"964 Record for the Wii remake: 1:48"861 These are just the best times, but they demonstrate at the highest level that the racing just feels much slower (playing 50CC is just torture... the item RNG torture is just as bad there, unlike in Double Dash!). At a lower level, the difference is even more obvious.

Mario kart 64 is the best, the drift boost system is awesome, the game is fast, simple, and have the best battle mode ever. I still play it today, and is not about nostalgia, is about good gameplay mechanics.

Mario Kart Wii is my favorite, just because of the nostalgia for me. I also loved Mario Kart on the N64 too. But I just started really getting back into Mario Kart for the first time in about 8-9 years and I must say, 8 Deluxe is GREAT. I’ve gotta get used to the controls a little more, but once I do, in a couple of months, it might be #1. It has so many more maps, you have so many different ways of controlling it and of course, the Switch is the best Nintendo console out there.
My top 5: 1. Mario Kart Wii: Easily the best Mario Kart ever released. Nice music, amazing tracks, amazing single player and wifi mode. And many many glitches and shortcuts to discover. 2. Mario Kart 7: Decent graphics. Fun tracks. Extremely fun wifi mode. Some shortcuts and glitches. 3: Mario Kart 8/Deluxe: Amazing graphics. Amazing wifi mode and single player mode. Can't do any shortcuts because of lakitu. 4: Mario Kart 64: Classic Mario Kart. The beginning of the series. Huge glitch and discovery for shortcuts. Not many characters. 5: Mario Kart DS: I wasn't much of a big fan of this game, but I absolutely LOVED the wifi aspect and the character aspect of the game. Other than that, not much to say.

Keywords: "for the time." This isn't the mid-'90s. And honestly Mario Kart 64's graphics didn't even really look that great back then. N64 graphics were way behind the PS1 from the get-go thanks to Nintendo's foolish reliance on cartridges. Granted, Mario Kart 64 was a huge improvement over the original. But every Mario Kart since has outdone it except maybe the GBA version, though even it at least had the novelty of being portable.

MK8 is a mess. If hopping through the air is a strategy that saves time, something is messed up with physics. MK8Deluxe is a step in the right direction, but tbh is Mariokart 8.1, in that it barely did anything.

7 and 8 are my favourites, but 8 made a really stupid mistake with removing battle arenas and using the courses instead. I'll never understand why they did that, but other than that 8 is a brilliant game!

I haven't played double dash, but that 2 characters in a car just loks like a useless gimmick aside for the 2 items, that can perfectly be used by one character.

Mario Kart Wii is my favorite, just because of the nostalgia for me. I also loved Mario Kart on the N64 too. But I just started really getting back into Mario Kart for the first time in about 8-9 years and I must say, 8 Deluxe is GREAT. I’ve gotta get used to the controls a little more, but once I do, in a couple of months, it might be #1. It has so many more maps, you have so many different ways of controlling it and of course, the Switch is the best Nintendo console out there.

1. Mario Kart Wii: Easily the best Mario Kart ever released. Nice music, amazing tracks, amazing single player and wifi mode. And many many glitches and shortcuts to discover.
2. Mario Kart 7: Decent graphics. Fun tracks. Extremely fun wifi mode. Some shortcuts and glitches.
3: Mario Kart 8/Deluxe: Amazing graphics. Amazing wifi mode and single player mode. Can't do any shortcuts because of lakitu.
4: Mario Kart 64: Classic Mario Kart. The beginning of the series. Huge glitch and discovery for shortcuts. Not many characters.
5: Mario Kart DS: I wasn't much of a big fan of this game, but I absolutely LOVED the wifi aspect and the character aspect of the game. Other than that, not much to say.

Keywords: "for the time." This isn't the mid-'90s. And honestly Mario Kart 64's graphics didn't even really look that great back then. N64 graphics were way behind the PS1 from the get-go thanks to Nintendo's foolish reliance on cartridges. Granted, Mario Kart 64 was a huge improvement over the original. But every Mario Kart since has outdone it except maybe the GBA version, though even it at least had the novelty of being portable.

MK8 is a mess. If hopping through the air is a strategy that saves time, something is messed up with physics. MK8Deluxe is a step in the right direction, but tbh is Mariokart 8.1, in that it barely did anything.

I haven't played double dash, but that 2 characters in a car just loks like a useless gimmick aside for the 2 items, that can perfectly be used by one character.
It's hard for me to decide between 64 and Double Dash, they're both my favorite!

Haven't played too much of the others. All i know is, IMO if they plan on making Mario Kart 9, just take 8 and throw in double dash. That's arguably the perfect Mario kart.

Now THIS, is a good list. Although I would switch MK64 and MK:SC and put MK8 in 3rd place and the other two at the top. But this one is still very reasonable. Especially considering that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is coming out.

I don't get why everybody loves DD... I grew with playing it at my friend's house but I absolutly hate the drift system... It feels too weird for me.
I personnaly love MK:WII but mostly because it was my first online game...

I don't truly care about the improvements, Beside that MKWii also deleted some Double Dash improvements, DD maps are better , larger and you had more liberty to move , On mario kart wii the graphics are actually better, but that lighting effect in MKWii (like the sun) Makes the game have a more realistic style, Mario kart games need to look cartoony.
