I knew that the X10 max speed was not compatible with Thunderbolt 4 on my Macbook Pro; therefore, I ordered the X9, and it works fine with my Mac and iPhone 15 Pro Max. I don't think that I will have to update the firmware any time soon, if ever. The fact that the X9 is so small and lightweight was the key factor in my decision, and I am glad that I made the purchase. 😀
hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does this device work as expected when connected to an android phone with password protection on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to and files shown on an android phone?
I didn’t 😢 sending it back
I purchased the Crucial X9 for use with my iPhone 15 Pro. So far, it has worked well in terms of recording 4K/60 log footage to the SSD. I performed a long recording of about 15 minutes at an event. It appears that some corruption of the log footage occurred around nine minutes into the recording but I believe that this is an IOS issue based on my deeper dive. I subsequently power cycled the phone and I was able to record test footage for another 15 minutes with no issues in the footage. I connect the SSD to the iPhone 15 Pro via a one inch Duttek USB-C to USB-C male -to-male adapter. This setup easily works for handheld recording and it should work with some gimbals as well.
I've had just one recording that was about 5min in length at 4K60 using the native camera app that had a few dropped frames. Using the Blackmagic Camera app, I've never noticed dropped frames, but I mainly record in 4K24 for up to 30 minutes at a time and also the Blackmagic app can pop an alert if it detects dropped frames, just one more reason I love that app!

Agree, for Mac users get the X9 pro, you'll never see the 2x2 speeds on Apple. Also, Black Magic disk speed program is not reliable use Aja.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check out Aja software.
Hi, A big cheer for talking about firmware update issue for Mac users 👍.
Hi! Nice video!
I have a question about crucial x9 "for mac". apart from the enigmatic information that it is optimized for Mac, is there any specific difference between the regular x9 pro?
Yes, i have the same question, i buyed a x9 pro a month ago and i just find out that is a mac version
This is gold Jerry. Thank you !!! Cancelled my x10 and ordered an x9.
Glad it was helpful!
hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does this device work as expected when connected to an android phone with password protection on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to and files shown on an android phone?
@@namratat3384Crucial products aren't Apple/Mac exclusive.
WAIT! I didn't find any comments about the absurd quality of this video. Was it filmed with the iPhone 15 Pro? I'm testing it for my channel, please tell me if you used the iPhone and achieved this result. Thanks! 🙏🏼 ❤
awesome video!!!
If the iPhone 15 pro supported thunderbolt, the crucial pro-g40 would be great.
Let me simplyfy this. Thunderbolt 4 is not compatible with any speeds over 10gbit (1025mbps) using USB-C units :) Its because apple wants you to buy Thunderbolt.
I bought this x10/4tb , I just sent it back through that I found out there is no security features and everyone can access to your files versus the sd Sandisk that I already have. I contacted the customer service they told me as of now July 2024 they are still working for it and not sure when they will launch.
Good to know about needing a PC for a firmware update.
The only SSD drive that will maximize the thunderbolt 3/4 connection is a SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 which uses thunderbolt 3/4 protocol...but it's more expensive (I would only buy a 4tb) and there are reports of overheating and some issues with it...I stopped using another sandisk (ok not the pro line) Extreme-it would get REALLY hot while connected to my mac book pro...I use now Samsung T7 but the crucial X9pro 4tb is priced very nicely...I think these are fast enough to edit directly from it- 4k-2-3 streams not at highest codecs...I use a FX30 at 4k 30 and 60 not at highest quality and the Samsung works fine...
Very helpful
My X10 2TB goes around 1500MB/s read and write on my Mac Studio M2 ultra. No idea why but it's alright since I bought the X10 at $130 on sale so it's worth. I would personally recommend the X9 and X10 over the Samsung T5 or T7. The smaller form factor is much better. Nothing wrong with the current firmware at all.
Strange........ I have not heard of a Mac Studio owner getting those speeds..... Congratulations.....
Is the X9 smaller than the Samsung T7?
@@MohondhaY
Here is the measurements in inches:
Samsung T7: 3.35x2.24x0.3
Crucial X9: 2.56x1.97x0.3
@@khoifoto Thank you so much !!!🤗
Can these be used with any iPhone ?
Only with iphone 15 (usb-C port)
FYI: We need to be careful of SSDs and NVMe enclosures, because we do not know how much power they need from the 15 Pros... I tested out the ACASIS TBU405 40Gbps with WD SN770 2TB & Lexar NM790 4TB, starting at 80% battery life on the 15 Pro at home. I'm still shopping for a way to mount the TBU405 to my Small Rig Universal Phone Cage. I also purchased the SSK 1TB SSD and it works for it's price $70 on Amazon, $99 for 2TB.
Sata ssd has the lowest wattage then??
I use Windows and iPhone 15pm, which do you think is best? Samsung T7 Shield or Crucial X9/X10 Pro for 4K/60 video and editing directly on the drive via Lumafusion? please help me.. I want to buy tomorrow
Thank you for this video. Very helpful.
Thanks! Exact question I was trying to answer. My Macbook Pro won't do dual lane. I Bought the X9 Pro
If I'm using my iPhone 15 Pro Max to shoot video and my iPad Pro M4 to edit said video, would the X9 Pro be a good choice to use? Essentially saving from one device to bring to another?
There a new Crucial pro Mac version of this. Please review it and let me know the difference and is it worth it

For a USB gen 2x2 I would recommend formatting your drive using ExFat. In my tests I found out they perform slightly better than APFS, maxing out at 1.2gb/sec write speeds. Give it a shot!
Good video 👍🏻
sorry tech noob here. as a Mac user, considering the software update that needs to be done on Windows, is it better to use exFAT format for the SSD? or should i just use exFAT regardless the situation, rather than using APFS?
@@ghia4619 I just use exFAT
What about USB4? Is it going to work with full speed on USB4?
Just bought the x10 on prime day 2tb for only $120. Won’t have 2k speeds but i guess im future proof
That's a great price for 2TB!
hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does this device work as expected when connected to an android phone with password protection on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to and files shown on an android phone?
I have a 3.2 2x2 port on my windows motherboard so I got the x10 and will use it with my iphone 15
The X10 speeds with a 2x2 port are great!
hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does this device, x9 pro specifically, work as expected when connected to a phone with password protection on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to and files shown on a phone?
Thank you very much, very helpful video.
I bought the Crucial X9 Pro 4 TB (CT4000X9PROMACSSD9B02) for my iPhone 15 pro max, which is especially suitable for Apple devices.
It also seems to me to be even more compact than the Samsung T7 (I usually only buy Samsung SSDs).
Question I now have is what if you use the ACASIS Tool-free 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure with something like the SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 ? Sorry you answered the question.
You won't get faster speeds with the iPhone since it maxes out at USB 3.2 Gen 2, but when you connect to a faster port on a computer like Thunderbolt 3 or 4, that enclosure and internal SSD will be very fast. I have an Acasis enclosure with a WD_Black drive that consistently gets 2700MB/s or slightly higher read and write. It's definitely fast enough to edit video directly off of without transferring onto your computer, and it has worked with my iPhone no problem. The only downside is if you need to travel with it a lot, it's not going to be waterproof/dustproof like the portable drives are, so you just need to be a bit more careful with it. I use mine to offload all my video footage and then edit & store the final files and it works great.
My iPad Pro unable detect X10 Pro SSD ? … do I need to format it first on MacBook before it can use on my iPad ? ….. Can someone guide me …. Urgent need solution … Thanks
Hello i hope somebody can help me, i allready call for apple support and they did NOT give me a solution, my problem is when i plug in my SSD external hard drive in ProRes and following all the instructions and tutorials in you tube, when i try to reproduce my video on PC it shows the CODEC ERROR you can hear the audio, but the screen is black.
if some can help me with a solution i will be appreciate a lot.

hey, can you maybe help me with this question - does this device, x9 pro specifically, work as expected when connected to an android phone with password protection on, or does the password protection need to be removed in order to be connected to and files shown on an android phone?
I think you have to have the 15 Pro Max iPhone for any kind of "Direct Connect". I have a 14 Plus (lightning port...Booo!) that will not connect directly. I have to use the Apple powered USB adapter to get it to connect. My wife has a USB C iPad, same thing, it won't connect. Upon further testing, the 14 Plus also doesn't support a USB Hub. I think only the PRO version has the firmware to connect. My Samsung S24 Ultra does all this directly. iPhone's lack documentation & capability on techie issues like this. Search and AI give sketchy answeres.
3:43 "... USB 3.2 2x2 *specifically* ..." so even with USB4, or Thunderbolt 4 it will be work at about 900 MB/s ? I"m correct?
Correct!
thanks for ypur answer :) @@semiprotech
bro should i buy this or go with t7 shield because both are same money , i want to backup photos and videos from my 15 pro max pls suggest me the good one in amall budget..
can you use these SSD's to play music through your iphone? for example if loaded my own mp3 albums onto the SSD would they appear in the Music App?
Thanks! Just what I was looking for, what if I get the X10 Pro with a good discount and it’s cheaper than the X9? Would you still recommend the X9 for Apple users?
Might I know thunderbolt 3 interface on my laptop could fully take the advantage of x10 pro gen 2x2 20GB/s speed?
Thunderbolt does not utilize the 2x2 protocol, so it will max out at 1,000MB/s. My macbook has Thunderbolt 4 and it's the same.
@@semiprotech thanks then I might get the Samsung T7 shield or crucial X9 pro ssd ,which one you prefer
are these pcie ssd or sata ssd's ???
Thank you this video it totally helped me decide what route I need to go. I just need an external drive to backup my PC to and for that the external NVME drive makes sense
Awesome review had a crucial in my Amazon cart and wanted some review before I bought it🙏🏽🙏🏽

Can i use x9 for windows too or only for ios ? Do i need to format first ?
Hi! Yes the X9 and X10 drives are compatible with Windows and they come formatted with the exFAT file system which should work fine on Windows right out of the box.
I wonder if I can get x10 full speed on my scar 17 2022 laptop. Website says it has
1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C DisplayPort 1.4/100W power delivery
2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
1x Thunderbolt 4 with DisplayPort 1.4
so what's the best ssd drive which can reach up to 2000 for a macbook air m2 and iphone 15promax user ?
Thanks so much, that's very useful!
that is, the European Union has made the best iPhone with its regulations 🤣🤣🤣, what a talented institution it is and who would have thought😂😂😂😂
Def looking into the x9 and will be sure to use the link!
im using Crucial X9 for me its perfect. Im not filming in rain ... )
Just come across you browsing the web, I’m so on the fence about iPhone 15 pro max vs full frame camera, I’m still on iPhone 12 Pro Max, the phone is so dam convenient and fast from pocket to take a photo or video in seconds vs the much larger form factor and obvious learning curve of a dedicated camera but would like to improve the quality of my photos ect as upload them to MAC M2, live to hear your and anyone else’s thoughts and experiences 😎😎
New subscriber as enjoyed your video 😎😎
the 2x2 standard is garbage; I've tested 6 2x2 cords of amazon and they all crash my PC systems... only the original OEM cords (when running at 2x2) speed don't crash my 3 PC's that have 2x2. TB 4 should be supported on all these external NVME drives; its been around for a long time and has lots of penetration... I don't get it.
Then the price would go up.
Each product has a specific target audience.
Crazy: Amazon for the 1TB X9 is (today 11/17/2023)) $60 USD. For the 2TB X9 it's $135!! Six dollars more than the 2TB X10!! It only works for you financially if you do the X9 1TB or the X9 4TB ($182.99) vs X10 4TB ($315.63). Marketing. Sheesh. I don't understand it. New subscriber. Think you'll do well.
Black Friday deals definitely make things weird in the tech space! I don't know why they never seem to discount all the models, it's always one or two but not all and it makes the price per GB ratio really weird during the sale.
Do you need external power to connect x9 pro to iphone? Anandtech's test shows that it's power consumption is mostly within 2.5Wt
No external power needed for recording to the X9 Pro! I've used it without power for recording several shorter clips and slow motion shots where I didn't need an external mic and it has always worked well.
You can make your own M.2 ssd drives with faster speeds.
Im trying to transfer my 512gb iPhone photos to a ssd. Which would be best and transfer quick in under 3-5min
Your iPhone has 512GB, but how much GBs big are your photos? 15 Pro/Pro Max have 3.2 Gen2 port with maximum transfer rates about 900-950 MB/s, so your could achieve about 50GB per min on good SSDs.
Why you sitting inside a house with hat on head
Great review.....
I like Crucial.... I upgraded my 2011 iMac with an MX500 SSD.... Works flawlessly....
The X9 and X10 are nice external storage drives.... I love the tiny size....
I picked up a Samsung T7 last week before seeing this video. Nevertheless, I'm certain the performance will be nearly identical....
I think the T7 is a great choice, Samsung has a Mac option for their firmware updater just in case they ever have to release an update and the speeds should be pretty much the same as the X9 Pro.
Do these drives work plugged directly into the phone without a hub/power similar to the Samsung T7/T9? Or do they need external power like the Sandisk drives?
Both of the Crucial drives have worked fine connected directly to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. They actually fit inside a magsafe wallet if you have one that's a little bit stretchy too.
Hi, so if I edit video on a window computer and sometimes I sued a Mack book air m2 … would u still suggest me the x9 and would u say with the time it will still be worthy? Or if I buy the x10 it will las longer … the main purpose is to edit video and to store all my photos
If your Windows computer has a 3.2 2x2 port, you'll get the faster speeds of the X10 when using it on that computer and just won't get the faster speeds with your Macbook, which is fine because half the speed is still pretty fast. But if neither device has a 2x2 port, the X10 may not be worth the extra cost.
Is there any adaptor for it to bridge between those different ports.
Do you know if the x10 draw more power than the x9? I know the T7 works but sandisk draws too much power and drop frames.
I doubt it, it worked just like any ssd on my iPhone 15 pro.
Can I use this with my 14 pro max?
Funny - I had nothing but trouble with a Crucial X9 attached to my iPhone. I work with iPhone/iPad workflow and air drop was a no go. Sometimes files simply didn’t record using BM Camera app. Sometimes the drive could not be found by the files app on either device. Maybe I got a lemon…
What file system did you have it formatted to? They come formatted as exFat, but I formatted mine to APFS because I only use it with the iPhone and a Macbook. I've had no trouble with it on either device so I'm just curious if it could be the file system. If not, it's possible that you did get one with a firmware bug or something.
@@semiprotechYeah, sounds like I need to reformat the drive since I’m an Apple only guy. Thanks for the suggestion…
Crucial X9 Pro will it be very hot? Has anyone tested it?
Not sure but currently $60 kinda a steal for 1tb
Gets a little warm so far. Def not hot tho.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for your honesty
Does it need to be formatted before we use it?
I formatted mine to APFS before using because I find that works most consistently without issues on my Macbook and works well with the iPhone too. They come formatted as exFat, which is compatible with Mac and Windows so it's not required to re-format before using.
Any thoughts on the Samsung SSD T7 drives? That’s what I use. The size is great and I have not had any issues with them.
Yes the T7's are a great option! Samsung has a firmware updater for Windows and Mac and they have a good track record for reliability. The speeds should be about the same as the X9 Pro. The size is just a little larger than the Crucial drives but they're certainly not huge. It should be a great choice for use with the iPhone 15 Pro/Max.
Stay with the Samsung T7 it work fine.
Thanks
❤Great job Sir 🥰
nobody had cover this issue on youtube before
❤
Great video but we didn't need a 4 minute explanation (with several repetitions of the facts) as to why the Crucial X10 can't achieve those transfer speeds. It's so simple. No current Mac device supports those transfer speeds as of now. Nobody cares that there maybe be old Intel Macs which MAY have 2x2 support. You'rte making a video about the iPhone 15 Pro! Buy the X9 and save your money. Done
Samsung t9 is a better option.
Nope... The X10 has the same performance as the T9.... Why are you lying?
In what specific way is Samsung T9 better than the Crucial X10? How about Samsung T7 shield vs the Crucial X9?
I have Crucial X6, X9 Pro and X10 Pro. All perform great, obviously with X10 tops. Micro Center has it for $20 cheaper.
Mega cope 😂
I have to ask…only because 99% of MAC users don’t actually understand Thunderbolts.
Did you try to do a speed test on the X10 on that MacAir M1 that happened to have a Thunderbolts 3 port on it? I guessing not…
GUYS………..
Thunderbolt 3 = 40Gbps through a COMBINED 4X10gbps PCIE Lane. or, PCIE4 4X4=16 Lanes.
Thunderbolt 4 = 40 Gbps as a total aggregate of 4x10Gbps.
Meaning…
If you plug a SINGLE device into a Thunderbolt 4 port… you will achieve a maximum of 10 Gbps on that port
If you plug a HUB device into a Thunderbolt 4 port… 4 devices will again achieve a maximum of 10 Gbps on that hub… simultaneously, reaching a total bandwidth of 40 Gbps.
If you plug a single device into a Thunderbolt 3 port… you will achieve a maximum of of 40 Gbps on that port
If you plug a HUB device into a Thunderbolt 3 port… 4 devices will SHARE the total 40Gbps bandwidth amongst one another dynamically.
Plug the X10 into the Thunderbolt 3 port and run the speed test again please.
I will patiently await the public apology for your confusion.
