I purchased the Crucial X9 for use with my iPhone 15 Pro. So far, it has worked well in terms of recording 4K/60 log footage to the SSD. I performed a long recording of about 15 minutes at an event. It appears that some corruption of the log footage occurred around nine minutes into the recording but I believe that this is an IOS issue based on my deeper dive. I subsequently power cycled the phone and I was able to record test footage for another 15 minutes with no issues in the footage. I connect the SSD to the iPhone 15 Pro via a one inch Duttek USB-C to USB-C male -to-male adapter. This setup easily works for handheld recording and it should work with some gimbals as well.

I've had just one recording that was about 5min in length at 4K60 using the native camera app that had a few dropped frames. Using the Blackmagic Camera app, I've never noticed dropped frames, but I mainly record in 4K24 for up to 30 minutes at a time and also the Blackmagic app can pop an alert if it detects dropped frames, just one more reason I love that app!

Agree, for Mac users get the X9 pro, you'll never see the 2x2 speeds on Apple. Also, Black Magic disk speed program is not reliable use Aja.

FYI: We need to be careful of SSDs and NVMe enclosures, because we do not know how much power they need from the 15 Pros... I tested out the ACASIS TBU405 40Gbps with WD SN770 2TB & Lexar NM790 4TB, starting at 80% battery life on the 15 Pro at home. I'm still shopping for a way to mount the TBU405 to my Small Rig Universal Phone Cage. I also purchased the SSK 1TB SSD and it works for it's price $70 on Amazon, $99 for 2TB.

My X10 2TB goes around 1500MB/s read and write on my Mac Studio M2 ultra. No idea why but it's alright since I bought the X10 at $130 on sale so it's worth. I would personally recommend the X9 and X10 over the Samsung T5 or T7. The smaller form factor is much better. Nothing wrong with the current firmware at all.

I knew that the X10 max speed was not compatible with Thunderbolt 4 on my Macbook Pro; therefore, I ordered the X9, and it works fine with my Mac and iPhone 15 Pro Max. I don't think that I will have to update the firmware any time soon, if ever. The fact that the X9 is so small and lightweight was the key factor in my decision, and I am glad that I made the purchase. 😀

I like Crucial.... I upgraded my 2011 iMac with an MX500 SSD.... Works flawlessly....
The X9 and X10 are nice external storage drives.... I love the tiny size....

Another video recommended the Crucial drives however you are the one to warn for the X10 pro not being able to be utilized by Apple products to the fullest.
I will probably get the X9 Pro.
What are your opinions on the Regular X9?
I am looking for a back up SSD solution. Do the Crucial drives hold up longevity wise?
    The X9 is considerably cheaper.
So I might get a 1 or 2TB X9 Pro to record and work out from.
While I might get a regular X9 4TB for back up.

    • @semiprotech
      @semiprotech  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The main difference between the regular X9 and the X9 Pro is the type of flash storage. The regular X9 is QLC and the X9 Pro is TLC. TLC flash storage is generally a bit more reliable with a longer lifespan in terms of max write cycles. I've also read that the regular X9 is not the best for transferring XL files like huge video files - specifically some people have reported that the write speed drops significantly during longer transfers. But that's secondhand information and I haven't tested it myself as I don't have a regular X9. I also believe the regular X9 does not have the IP55 water/dust rating that the X9 Pro has.

The only SSD drive that will maximize the thunderbolt 3/4 connection is a SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 which uses thunderbolt 3/4 protocol...but it's more expensive (I would only buy a 4tb) and there are reports of overheating and some issues with it...I stopped using another sandisk (ok not the pro line) Extreme-it would get REALLY hot while connected to my mac book pro...I use now Samsung T7 but the crucial X9pro 4tb is priced very nicely...I think these are fast enough to edit directly from it- 4k-2-3 streams not at highest codecs...I use a FX30 at 4k 30 and 60 not at highest quality and the Samsung works fine...

I think you have to have the 15 Pro Max iPhone for any kind of "Direct Connect". I have a 14 Plus (lightning port...Booo!) that will not connect directly. I have to use the Apple powered USB adapter to get it to connect. My wife has a USB C iPad, same thing, it won't connect. Upon further testing, the 14 Plus also doesn't support a USB Hub. I think only the PRO version has the firmware to connect. My Samsung S24 Ultra does all this directly. iPhone's lack documentation & capability on techie issues like this. Search and AI give sketchy answeres.

Black Friday deals definitely make things weird in the tech space! I don't know why they never seem to discount all the models, it's always one or two but not all and it makes the price per GB ratio really weird during the sale.

Funny - I had nothing but trouble with a Crucial X9 attached to my iPhone. I work with iPhone/iPad workflow and air drop was a no go. Sometimes files simply didn’t record using BM Camera app. Sometimes the drive could not be found by the files app on either device. Maybe I got a lemon…

What file system did you have it formatted to? They come formatted as exFat, but I formatted mine to APFS because I only use it with the iPhone and a Macbook. I've had no trouble with it on either device so I'm just curious if it could be the file system. If not, it's possible that you did get one with a firmware bug or something.

@@semiprotechYeah, sounds like I need to reformat the drive since I’m an Apple only guy. Thanks for the suggestion…

the 2x2 standard is garbage; I've tested 6 2x2 cords of amazon and they all crash my PC systems... only the original OEM cords (when running at 2x2) speed don't crash my 3 PC's that have 2x2. TB 4 should be supported on all these external NVME drives; its been around for a long time and has lots of penetration... I don't get it.

Then the price would go up.

Great video but we didn't need a 4 minute explanation (with several repetitions of the facts) as to why the Crucial X10 can't achieve those transfer speeds. It's so simple. No current Mac device supports those transfer speeds as of now. Nobody cares that there maybe be old Intel Macs which MAY have 2x2 support. You'rte making a video about the iPhone 15 Pro! Buy the X9 and save your money. Done

In what specific way is Samsung T9 better than the Crucial X10? How about Samsung T7 shield vs the Crucial X9?

I have Crucial X6, X9 Pro and X10 Pro. All perform great, obviously with X10 tops. Micro Center has it for $20 cheaper.

I have to ask…only because 99% of MAC users don’t actually understand Thunderbolts.
Did you try to do a speed test on the X10 on that MacAir M1 that happened to have a Thunderbolts 3 port on it? I guessing not…
    GUYS………..
    Thunderbolt 3 = 40Gbps through a COMBINED 4X10gbps PCIE Lane. or, PCIE4 4X4=16 Lanes.
    Thunderbolt 4 = 40 Gbps as a total aggregate of 4x10Gbps.
    Meaning…
If you plug a SINGLE device into a Thunderbolt 4 port… you will achieve a maximum of 10 Gbps on that port
If you plug a HUB device into a Thunderbolt 4 port… 4 devices will again achieve a maximum of 10 Gbps on that hub… simultaneously, reaching a total bandwidth of 40 Gbps.
If you plug a single device into a Thunderbolt 3 port… you will achieve a maximum of of 40 Gbps on that port
If you plug a HUB device into a Thunderbolt 3 port… 4 devices will SHARE the total 40Gbps bandwidth amongst one another dynamically.
Plug the X10 into the Thunderbolt 3 port and run the speed test again please.
I will patiently await the public apology for your confusion.
