When I see the sharpness of your face/body and quality of your video and many others on TH-cam I really think that I must have the crapiest cell phone on earth😂😅🤣😮🤪🥶😭😭😭😭😭 how am I EVER supposed to get good videos?!?!?! Hi I'm just getting started, as in just getting my camera, the whole nine yards. What lighting set up (lower price) would you recommend for a beginner?

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my TH-cam channel 8 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,140 subs and > 900 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
That’s awesome. Congrats!
Just reading this now. That’s amazing! Congrats!

This was easily one of the most useful, practical, and informative videos I've ever watched about lighting a room!! Thank you so much for making this!!
😵💫
Obsessed with the all black walls lol!
A Pro tip on glasses and reflections: Something we'll do often times is just tilt the glasses down slightly. So the backside is not sitting on your ears exactly but just slightly above, while the front is tilted down. This gets rid of all light reflection usually :)
Thanks for sharing this tip! 👏🏻 p.s. I need more black walls
@@lilafromyoutube what can i do to make my ring light softer? maybe place a light fabric on it to cover the ring and soften the light?
@@hnia0 you need space between the light source and the diffusion, so placing the fabric directly on the ring won't do. As an option you can improvise a frame for the fabric to be attached to (with a hole in the fabric for the lens to go through if that's what your setup requires), then a way to rig this frame some distance in front on the ring (it can be a separate stand or some extension allowing to attach to the same stand the light ring is on or the camera tripod). The amount of diffusion will depend on the thickness of the fabric and the distance from the light. Diffusing will always take away some of the intensity of your light source, you might want to take that into account. Experiment.

Great stuff, Lila! I learned the 3-point "Rembrandt" setup in film school as well. But fashion photographers and cinematographers have been using the "butterfly" setup for ages and it was a real eye-opener when I learned about that. Watch old romantic films from the 30s and 40s. The famous Marlene Deitrich portrait the was copied by Queen is an exagerad version of the butterfly setup. I've done a 'tiny' amount of fashion photography and straight-on light just above the camera is always a great choice - looks great on everybody. I also add a small bounce underneath to put a little light under the chin and neck. That's not generally practical for the average YT setup at a desk, though. Your setup looks great!
Sounds like you have a lot of experience to share ❤
Instead of a filler light, if you are on a budget, get some white foam core poster board. The light from your key light will bounce enough to lighten and soften the skin on the other side of the face.
agreed on butterfly vs rembrandt! I also prefer that the light be mostly in front of me, rather than at 45 degrees. I think it's so much more flattering!
same! no shadows please haha
@@lilafromyoutube so... not cinematic at all :))

Was expecting another dragged out lighting tutorial video, but this was great!
I liked how it was mostly focused on the tutorial but was well balanced with showing your personality, might model this video style 😊
I think I've watched this video at least 5 times. I can't stop myself from making my backgrounds too busy, but now I just watch the video because it's a good video.
I missed your comment! Hiiii 11 months later haha. Have you figured out a new background yet? Haha
A light straight on will actually give you a lot flatter look. That might be a good or a bad thing, if you're older a flatter light and using a camera from further away, straight on will make you look younger in front of the camera.
Normally, people would break a leg after such a good performance. But, this girl right here, she broke a glass cup. You go GIRL!!! 👏
😂😂😂
Fantastic guide on achieving a cinematic look with just three lights! Your explanation of each lighting position and its impact on the video is incredibly helpful
I appreciated how you didn't *once* mention Amazon as a source at all. Refreshing!
I'm sure she did it just for you 🤡
That was very helpful!! Some neat tips in this video! And the best tip i think was “stop making excuses about your equipment, start with your smart phone and progress from there”, which is what I am about to do for the moment, and I’m holding on to your video for future reference!
u used all the lights in the world while the video title says Just 3 lights
She did use just 3.
The other light is for the next content hahaha
anyone know what colour the wall paint ??
@@PurwantoDarto she mentioned it was just black.
It's just basic three point lighting. She just didn't really give you a straightforward message. Also she didn't ID the back lights as backlight. So three point lighting... You have a key to the right. A fill light that is softer to the left. An a backlight to give you that cinematic highlight, Wich I think she over does with where she placed her backlight
Great video. It turns out they’ve now discontinued the Aputure 120d II. Seems many suggest the Amaran 100d instead. I like the Amaran. But it does look a little harsher.
Yeah I like the 120d II because it goes really low. The 100d looks a bit harsher indeed but still pretty good imo. Have you checked out the 200d?
@@lilafromyoutube Thanks so much Lila. Great suggestion. I’ll take a look into it.

thank you - planning on it! any requests?
Great video. Could you please mention what hair light you are using, and how you are positioning it? Thank you.
I’m not using a hair light :)
found you searching for a lighting video, I rarely leave comments, but you slayed this video. Nice work girl and thank you. Very helpfful.
Thanks so much!! I’m honoured you left a comment :)
"Is this professional? No." Oh my.
I've been on sets with pros lighting an interior of a house from outside (it was raining outside, but we needed a warm, mid-afternoon lighting feel inside) and while they paid all the attention necessary to safety, then to achieving the onscreen light, outside the tarps all gaff taped together were not a concern. I remember being out there with the two people doing the lighting and thinking, "well, this will be interesting" but they absolutely nailed the desired result.
I learned that "professional" looking setups or mounts don't matter. What matters is the onscreen product, and yours looks very professional. :)
Wow - that was sooo simple. I've been trying everything to get lighting just right. Just shot my vid for this week following your info here and I love it! Thank you!!!
That’s amazing Jeff! I’m so happy to hear that
Love this look. I would like to recreate this look for my home studio. Can I use black paper roll to get the black wall look?
sure! make sure it doesn't have any creases so it will look nice and smooth
Loved it! Let me give you another video idea, “Lighting colors that work together”
You said its great to have a contrasting color but not like everyone knows the color chart so you could make us great combinations that works.
Kudos!
Great idea; thanks :)
@@lilafromyoutube still looking forward to it after a month
Good information! It seems that the particular shot is a little tight and would only work in limited situations?
What do you mean by limited situations?
@@lilafromyoutube How would change the setup or lighting when doing product reviews or other demonstrations?
Statistically, Rembrandt mainly used "Rembrandt light" on men. With women he hardly ever used it, opting for Loop or Butterfly lighting instead.
Then you going go to spilt when you move in a video 😂
That’s not statistical.
Amazing setup ! How do you manage the key light not spilling onto wall ! I’m using a honeycomb grid yet my back wall also lights up over powering my ambient lights ! Any suggestions pls ? Even set Key light to minimal
So many helpful tips here, thank you so much Lila! It was great to see your setup behind the scenes, I love it when TH-camrs show their workflows or setups, it gives a lot of ideas and is also a great starting point. 😃
You are so welcome! so glad it was helpful
@@lilafromyoutube Also, I forgot to say Gizmo. 😆

I've watch dozen of videos about lighting. Yours is the best one so far !
Means a lot 🙏🏻
Gizmo!
I love the colours you chose for the background Lila! I'm slowly adding more lighting options to my kit, and have been saving up to get something like the 120d II or 100d since those should be powerful enough for both photo and video projects.
My first Aputure light was the MC RGBWW LED. That tiny light really opened up a bunch of possibilities while in college and added pops of colour in an otherwise drab background. I'd love to grow my kit with more Aputure lights and those tube lights have been in my shopping cart for a long time. 🥰 I also love how you spoke with other female TH-camrs about lighting and included tips for glasses wearers (Mine always seem to catch reflections 😱).
Keep up the amazing work and thank you for being such an inspiring person Lila!
the 120D MII is pretty expensive so maybe the amaran 200d could be one to check out too!
Hey, I realy like your gray background. What color is your wall? Thank you! (Gray, but can you say exactly?
Great video!! I love those black cabinets so much. Do you know the brand/model?
what kind of foundation are you wearing? it has a really natural matte look. Also i agree Remb lighting is very dramatic showing a lot of sorrow

As a female creator, I’ve been struggling with lighting and the harsh shadows you talked about. Glad to see it isn’t just in my head, and others are feeling it too.
yeah i thought i'd mention it for the women who feel the same way. have you tried putting the light directly at you?
I noticed this too, love this tip

Your videos looks very clear. Could you tell me which camera you use? Also what color profile do you use? Thank you for the great content!
Most helpful lighting video I've ever watched. It's the one thing I've struggled most with throughout all my years on TH-cam - definitely going to impliment these tips.

@@lilafromyoutube I will make a video when I get it all figured out (might be a while, lol...I'm kind of chaotic)
Gizmo! Can you use a mobile or portable key light ? Most of the key lights I saw on TH-cam are huge and can’t be used when traveling
The panel lights or the amaran review I linked in the end screen are great portable lights!
I remember sreaching the best background for TH-cam videos on Google, and your video came up, now i am looking to buy a light for my interview seyup, and your video came again, and i watched everything! well put together video!

Amazing video. This has given me sucvch great help! Question: What are you putting that Aputure fixture light in?
It’s an Ikea lamp! Got it years ago
@@lilafromyoutube Thanks so much. I have one last question. How many inches tall and wide is the desk behind you? Or if you are able to link me to it, please do.
Yes! I would like to see a comparison of the key lights that you used please. If you have created the comparison video please reply with the link to the video. Thank you 😊
I know I’m a day late and a Dollar short commenting here but if you do wear glasses, are there any tricks that you know to eliminate the glare or reflection of monitors that are sitting in front of you? I’d really be interested to know this.
Great advice, especially for a newbie like me! Thank you. Could you tell me about the cabinet/drawer unit behind you? Would be a perfect addition to my space.
It’s a local Dutch brand so I’m not sure how helpful that is 😅
Thanks for this video. Question: what is the name of the app you are using to connect/link and control the lights? Thanks in advance, have a great, productive day.
The Sidus link app :)

Hello nicd set up 🎉 What is the lamp for the aputure b7c ? Is it a glob ?
Thanks for sharing. Which lights would be great for taking product pictures?
Do you do any colour grading or do you simply just shoot and then start editing?
I ask this question because Im wondering if I need to outlay money on a powerful computer or just use my laptop
Love that hand cream on the table. I also have on my desk at all times.
😂👌🏻
Can you talk about whether to use "warm", "cold" or "white" settings??
I’ll see what I can do :)
The teal and orange combo creates a fire and ice look
Yeah it’s a very popular one (dare I say a bit overused)
Love it! I’m here from the matti podcast, great conversation! Also, did I hear you say the 120d ii works with the Sidus Link app!? My remote stopped working a few months back so that would be awesome! Lol
Yeah but you need a bridge in order for it to work. Thanks for stopping by!!
Hello, Lila. We enjoy your content. My lady and I found you this evening.
Question: Do you have a recommended way of contacting Aputure? In my previous experience working with them, I recently purchased the new Light Dome Mini III. The cool flip-out thing attracted me versus sticking with left over II's with a device to hold gels.
I reached out to them to ask how you can ad gels, or if it's possible at all? If not, it seems they are doing a great job at steering me to purchased a bi-color or full-spectrum RGB. They NEVER returned my emails, despite resending it twice.
My lady and I have just begun making our own channel. Daunting journey!
Keep up the nice work.
Very neat! Any suggestions for the panel lights? I don't have a plethora of space in front of me for the big lights

@@lilafromyoutube Ahhh I see what you did there! Taking a look right now 👀
All is perfect! But one question... Why you break the a water glass?
CAN i use it with a Green background?
Hi, I was wondering where you got the shelf/table thats in the background that has your play button on it!? Ive been searching for something like that for so long! Thanks
Hi! Those are cabinets I got from a local Dutch store, sorry!
Would you still get this effect if it was a white wall behind you?
Hi Lila, Is the tube-light battery-powered? Best, Albert
Oooo amazing vid thanks! What did you use to have the B7c I love that set up 😊
It’s an Ikea lamp!
I have complete jacked skin and when the light was at a higher angle like many suggest I was getting bummed out by the results. Your little tip of moving the light down from a higher angle to a more direct one made all the difference and helped dramatically. Thank you for that.
I’m so glad to hear the adjustment helped 🙌🏻
Really enjoying the black walls in the studio! Mind sharing what shade of black you chose to go with? It looks like it has a slight blue tint. I would also love to know if you decided to do your ceilings as well. Thanks Lila!
It’s actually anthracite, not black! But it looks black on camera. It’s a rental so my ceilings are still white as we don’t want to go through the trouble of painting it white again 😂
Hello, please can i use this video for a school project?
Fantastic video. 👏 Yes, I agree. When we photograph women we avoid Rembrandt or loop (is ok) and we go with butterfly lighting. If you have a white desk then place the light in front of your desk and aim it downwards. It light your face and reflect off of the desk. It's one of my favorites for women. 😉
I’d love to know where you got your black locker cabinet behind your desk!
Love that set up! I’m gonna go for the same look only with blue background. Just got my first camera last week. The Zve10. Got a 1’ Amaran Aputure tube light and one of the MC minis on the way for the background. Still deciding which way I want to go with the key light but it will certainly be an Aputure!!
Exciting!! Amaran key lights are good too and def more affordable. Look into the 100D :)
@@lilafromyoutube just got my Adorama credit card in the mail today! Have 1 in my cart right now with soft box lol I’m checking out your affiliate links now 😊

Hahaha it was one of my favourite glasses but I got over it 😂 thanks for checking in
Im years behind in seeing this video but you killed this. Super informative. Thank you!
Hi Lila. Which Amaran light do you recommend, 100d or 100x?
it depends on what you need it for but if you have the money, go for the 100x so you will have the bicolor option
@@lilafromyoutube I’m using to create content for my fragrance TH-cam channel. I’ve been using 5200K with my old light in the past.

DS (daylight) will suffice but if you want more flexibility, go for the XS

@@lilafromyoutube Thanks!
loved this video, I have some LED light tubes on my wall that I turn on for my videos. However they don't look as crisp and colourful as yours and other youtube videos. Is this an editing issue? A brightness issue? or the way my key light is set up? Any advice would be awesome.
I guess the first question is what the settings of those lights are? This video isn’t colour graded so this is straight out of camera.
@@lilafromyoutube the lights are Govee RGBIC glide wall lights. I can control the colour and brightness. In the videos I've filmed since getting them I'm now wondering if it is colour choice that is the issue as my "brand" colour is a light blue and maybe it doesn't have enough contrast to the white wall and bright key light behind the camera to make it "pop" with colour...
My camera settings for recording are neutral meaning I add most of the colour with colour grading in edit. Should I maybe film in a different setting as well to test?
would you recommend the aputure 60d with a lantern softbox or the GVM bi-colour 100w lighting kit (also has a lantern softbox)? I will be using the set up as an upgrade to my ring light for self tape auditions. The noise output is a bit relevant but I am mostly after soft flattering lighting :)
Nice vid Lila, thnx for your help.I have a question, if you are sitting so close to the wall, how can your keylight not light too much the background in that tiny space and manage to keep it so dark in the first example? Is it the position of the light the key to avoid that?
I have the same question. My key light and fill light are bleeding into the background.
My wife and I are starting some channels and I'm just immersing myself in this stuff. Your video is great and super informative.
Thanks Frank. What kind of channels are you and your wife starting?
@@lilafromyoutube we are just starting a pair of channels. My wife being an avid paranormal enthusiast, will be starting a paranormal investigation channel. I am considering a science based politically left wing informational channel. Wish us luck!

Dumb question: what paint color is your wall? I see that color in most youtube setups, but don't know what it translates to in terms of sherwin williams/behr type "gray charcoal on a cloudy day" type names.
Perfect timing as I actually have a small studio space now that I am planning to build out!
🙌🏻 so much to do with such little space
Gizmo!
For the longest time I believed that natural light is the best light, but I'm learning more and more that knowing when to use what type of light is really the best way to go!
natural light is very helpful and affordable, but I have had many issues with clouds appearing in front of the sun which results in very inconsistent lighting. I'm glad this video helped!
What color of black paint did you end up using? Thanks!
Thank you! I enjoyed learning this! However I'm wanting a natural light look. Not unnatural pink, purple, teal, orange, etc. Is there a way for me to consistently achieve that well other than sit facing a window during daylight hours and hope for weather to cooperate? Or is there a way to take what sunlight there is and use it even better...like would a sheer curtain help amplify and diffuse it?
A sheer curtain is always the way to go on a bright sunny day. If it’s cloudy, the clouds will diffuse the sun light for you. You can use a good key and fill light to get a natural look. I’ll put it on my list of ideas as I’m planning to make a few more videos like this one!
Hi, great Video and I have followed a lot of your steps, and it looks great. One slightly unrelated question regarding the Auto Focus settings you are using. My Talking Head is almost identical distance to yours in this Video, but whether I use spot focus, centre focus or wide .. the shot keeps breathing in and out .. now I am always in focus, so it's not losing the tracking on my face, but it moves in the background, and I cannot for the life of me work out why. I have a Sony A7S iii with a 24mm G Master lens, which I think you also have (I may be wrong there), so if you are able to give me some advice this will top it all off ! thanks again for the great content/videos .. super useful.
Heya! I’m using the 24-70 GM II lens but that shouldn’t be an issue as I’ve used the 24MM prime before. Have you tried using another lens?? Just want to make sure we’ve covered all the basics 😅
Very good, thank you. Memories from Brazil.
your editing super enjoyable to watch, keep it up LILA !!!!!

Great video. My room is pretty long and the wall behind me (when I face the camera/computer) is 4m away. With the lightbox I have it lits up the room and I can't find a way to get that all dark room the way you and other youtubers show. Is this an issue with the choice of light?
