For what it's worth, all those seemingly random monsters and robots that serve as enemies and bosses in these games were apparently actually pulled from Lucasfilm concepts. I remember reading a multi-page feature in Nintendo Power that showed off a lot of the work that went into the making of these games back in the day that showed that off. Pretty much anything that was in the movie in the background, and whatever ILM and Henson Creature Shop didn't feel like making into actual puppets or animatronics for the production, were considered and often made into enemies. I have no idea if they mentioned why they often just made them GIGANTIC or whatever, but that was pretty cool to see. Particularly a lot of the monsters in Dagobah, like the boss of that area? Very cool design, and I'm glad it got used in the games even if it was never made into the movies as a background monster puppet or whatever.
Awesome video! Vader's delicate lightsaber swing is taken directly from the Empire Strikes Back film (the first wide shot after Luke gets up from being knocked down early in the fight) - it was such a distinct movement in the game, and then while watching the film and noticing it I couldn't believe the developers actually referenced the film choreography in the game sprites - gotta give them props for that!

My uncle had bought me super TESB and I could never get passed cloud city. Game was insanely difficult. Thankfully I was able to beat the trilogy in my adult years. Still hard as balls
My most potent memories of each game……… Super Star Wars - Lava Beast Jawenko: the floor is lava, one touch instant death Super Empire - clingy wampas that push you into spikes & instant death (but space bacon!!) Super RotJ - never could beat the exploding Death Star even with Invincibility
Awww, Super Return of The Jedi. I went to visit family in Belfast for a week, The first day there we went to the Virgin Megastore & they had a copy of SROTJ for £20. I then had the excruciating wait to go home to play on it, my god that week dragged.
I loved these games. The original Nintendo Star Wars games were awful, and so hard. These games were achievable if you were dedicated. And they rocked! I have such fond memories. Lots of flipping. What people have to understand is that there were so few good Star Wars games. These were the games that made you feel like you were playing with the toys we grew up with, but they had come to life in epic fashion. These days that's an easy experience to get. At this time, it was a dream come true.
For me, the n64 games, particularly rogue squadron really drew me into the star wars world. The Super Star Wars games were probably more true to the films but I couldn't appreciate them till later in life because they were so difficult 😅
“Let’s not pretend the originals are perfect” while showing a dumb scene Lucas added to the special edition of return. Obviously I don’t think the originals are perfect but come on😂
@@WesDoesGamesthe shown clip would've still been a clip that was added to one of the og trilogy re-releases, and not the original release. I'm not personally bothered, just pointing that out
"No other game hated their players like this" I don´t think it was as hard as contra or mega-man, but souls like creators probably developed their fetish with these games.
I played all these games, but really put a lot of time in Super Empire Strikes Back. They put some cool things into that one, and some not so much. So since you wear Luke's X-wing outfit the entire time, even with Star Wars Battlefront II, I have never seen Luke wearing his "Bespin fatigues" in a game. BTW, the "bug creatures" are 4-Lom the bounty hunter.
@@WesDoesGames No problem. So for it's time fighting Vader like that was pretty awesome including having the force powers. I didn't play the ROTJ a lot, not sure why now, but I barely remember it. I do remember that tunnel escape from the Death Star II now which was ridiculous. Makes me laugh, because as a typical person that grew up with the PT, the shots keep coming on the ST in the video. We that grew up with the OT never felt the hate (well don't get me started on RoS) and were more critical of the PT, although we were happy to have Star Wars again, albeit if following some of the same goofy stuff from the end of the last trilogy. But with ROTS pretty much all was forgiven. If you are doing walkthroughs of old games I'd be curious of your comedic take on the Episode I awful game. And also "Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight" which was huge at the time, and for some reason they skipped releasing on current gen.
This was a prime candidate to be released as Super Star Wars Trilogy on 1 cartridge on N64 with some enhancements, but I guess Nintendo/LucasArts didn't like more money. it would still be cool to get a modern HD remake
@@KasumiKenshirou - they probably could've put it on another game as a bonus toward the end of the N64's life cycle being they were using way more memory at the end. They could've completely redone the 3-D Mode 7 stages using the N64 hardware. Would've been a nice treat
@@rogercoad1088 - if it was Factor 5 doing it, it would've been done really well. They used the N64 even better than a bunch of intenal Nintendo teams. Just look at Rogue Squadron
I beat Super Empire Strikes Back so many times. I loved that game. SWPMSS is the code to get to the last level, I still remember it. First time I played Super RotJ was well after N64 was out. It seemed so easy and primitive. Got to nearly the end with no deaths then had to leave my girlfriends house where I was playing.
I remember renting the first one as a kid and all it really took for me to love a Super Nintendo game back then was for it to have much better visuals, bigger sprites and smoother controls then its NES counterpart and it delivered in spades.
But there is a difference between a good challenge and being unfairly difficult though and the Super Star Wars games fall into the latter category. You have no choice but to get hit by the enemies and that is a reason why everything gives you hearts. There is no pattern to the enemy movements and it just seems the enemies are just placed randomly without any thought put into the level design.
I remember I was 10 and my brother was 17 about the time these games came out. Bro would smoke bud with his homies and play these games but would get stuck on certain parts. That’s when I came in hand. Made me feel like million bucks when my older brother yelled at me to come to his room and help him beat a level on Star Wars.
The Super Star Wars Games are still on Top of my list of favorite Star Wars Games of all time cause I played the hell out of it as a kid and I still do whenever I put hands on my old snes
Comeon man, the bug guy on Bespin is 4-Lom! I also never knew that so many Jawas needed to be murdered before I played these games lol. I absolutley loved the SSW Trilogy when it came out, and still play it to this day. I just wished the Prequel trilogy got the same treatment on the GBA because those games weren't that good. If you really want to become a Jedi, try playing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back on NES. Throw Star Wars on Famicom in there for good measure. This was an entertaining video.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, this style of gameplay would have been sick for the prequels. I think that New Droid Army game was probably the closest
I feel like these games are the equivalent of Hollywood retellings of historical events with many creative liberties, but within the SW universe. Kinda like a tall tale for the kids
Good vid man, thanks! Took me back, i'd played the hell out of these. I had an NES back in the day, and Atari 2600, 5800. I later rented a Sega Saturn, then bought PlayStation in the late nineties with an import modchip. When the PS2 was released, had to get it and so I did. I installed an import modchip in it. Then came a Sega Dreamcast. Owning both at the same time along with the OG PS. I skipped getting an Xbox because I bought a PS2, and not until some years of owning four PS2's and a second Sega Dreamcast, I picked up another PlayStation at a local thrift store with another modchip, and after already owning an Xbox 360, and also having an Xbox One a few years later, but didn't buy any PS3, PS4, nor PS5. Maybe I will someday. Although I like Nintendo, I never stuck with Nintendo. Dunno why really... No Switch. No N64, no Cube. No Wii. No DS. Only one original black and white Game Boy after my original Nintendo Entertainment System with Light Zapper. Yet, I had friends who owned, N64, Nintendo Cube, Sega Master System, Genesis, Atari Jaguar, Atari 5600, Turbo Grafix 16, and 3DO. At one point I borrowed a friend's Super Nintendo. He did not have Super Star Wars trilogy so i never got to play it. I now want to play it. 😅
The hardest for me is the first one cause you get the light saber after a long time. Or it felt like a long time cause I keep dying when I was a kid. Never finished the game. Even with emulators I think I will use save states. These games were really made so hard just so that you can't be them in a week end if you rented them
8:59 The "insect people"? That's one of the bounty hunters hired by Vader. (and respawned in the game ad nauseam, of course :DD) Couldn't remember the name, so googled: 4-LOM. And a droid, not an insectoid.
Christmas 1992 I worked over the holidays and earned £100, knowing super Star Wars had just came in to the console shop on import I bought it the first day back at school (it was £70 but I felt like a millionaire with my earnings) on lunch break. Wow, all the kids from school knocked on my front door that night to see it.
These games are really cool but, as pointed out, quite challenging. For those who want to lessen the challenge: The very similar Star Wars Trilogy - Apprentice of the Force for GBA is also a great 2d game about Ep. 4-6
Luke Skywalker ANH: " But why would Imperial Troops want to slaughter Jawas?" Well, to find out where the droids are Luke. The big question is, why would YOU want to slaughter Jawas in the ANH SNES game?
The titles honestly crack me up. God, imagine if the first one was called "Super A New Hope."
I remember playing Super Empire back in 1995 at a friend's house. I hate it cause I sucked so bad. I thought I was just terrible at games in general, but it's good to know it wasn't just me and the game was actually difficult for most people.
Empire was definitely the hardest, then a new hope, then return of the Jedi. I beat return of the Jedi as a kid but could barely get passed the first stages on the other two

I tried replaying Super RotJ again a few years ago, and couldn't even get past level 2, haha, nicely done on the video and beating the games!
I've heard that games were made hard back then to get people to buy the games instead of renting them
Thanks friend. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the difficulty was to keep you renting the game over and over at video stores
@@Mezzo-k1yThat definitely was the case for arcade cabinets.
I loved these games as a kid. I need them CiB for my collection.
The boss at 12:01 looks like what I remember seeing as the original concept art for the Rancor.
the amount of times me and my mate hired these from the local vid-biz,we could of bought them outright
My uncle had bought me super TESB and I could never get passed cloud city. Game was insanely difficult. Thankfully I was able to beat the trilogy in my adult years. Still hard as balls
I'm impressed you made it that far. I could barely make it off Hoth
My most potent memories of each game………
Super Star Wars - Lava Beast Jawenko: the floor is lava, one touch instant death
Super Empire - clingy wampas that push you into spikes & instant death (but space bacon!!)
Super RotJ - never could beat the exploding Death Star even with Invincibility
Awww, Super Return of The Jedi.
I went to visit family in Belfast for a week, The first day there we went to the Virgin Megastore & they had a copy of SROTJ for £20.
I then had the excruciating wait to go home to play on it, my god that week dragged.
Banger of a trio. Reminds me of the Desert Strike series.
Obviously I don’t think the originals are perfect but come on😂
Fair enough. I should have clarified "original trilogy" as opposed to the prequels/sequels etc
thank you
@@WesDoesGamesthe shown clip would've still been a clip that was added to one of the og trilogy re-releases, and not the original release.
I'm not personally bothered, just pointing that out
@@NeilPundick TH-cam comments are like poetry;
they rhyme.
Nothing shown was part of the original trilogy.
I admit I did use the Unlimited Thermal Detanater codes in all 3 games.
No judgment here
7:17 They fly now?
tHeY fLy NoW!
"No other game hated their players like this" I don´t think it was as hard as contra or mega-man, but souls like creators probably developed their fetish with these games.
I can definitely see the connection, especially with the creative but horrifying monsters
First video ive seen of yours and you're great bro.
Totally my kind of comedy.
And you played pour out a lil liquor!
Thanks, glad to have you aboard!
Luke drinking that green milk 🥛 was the best part for all episodes 7, 8, and 9!
Get out 👉
I played all these games, but really put a lot of time in Super Empire Strikes Back.
Thanks for the correction!
Nintendo wanted to show off the 3D capabilities of the N64 rather than rerelease SNES games that weren't that old at the time.
@@KasumiKenshirou - they probably could've put it on another game as a bonus toward the end of the N64's life cycle being they were using way more memory at the end. They could've completely redone the 3-D Mode 7 stages using the N64 hardware. Would've been a nice treat
What and make them a blurry load of puke like all the other N64 games, no thanks.
Awesome video man! I loved these as a kid! Made me a nervous wreck every time.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
I remember renting the first one as a kid and all it really took for me to love a Super Nintendo game back then was for it to have much better visuals, bigger sprites and smoother controls then its NES counterpart and it delivered in spades.
The jump between nes and snes was remarkable
These are some of the best Star Wars games out there. Just because they are difficult doesn't make them bad.
It's nice to feel superior to a sibling, haha
There was also no Super Phantom Menace either. The Last Jedi is still my favorite Star Wars movie.
The Super Star Wars Games are still on Top of my list of favorite Star Wars Games of all time cause I played the hell out of it as a kid and I still do whenever I put hands on my old snes
Peak nostalgia! 👍
It's weird i don't ever remember seeing commercials for super Nintendo games. 🤔
Super Empire Strikes Back was amazing.
Lando is there to greet you at the end of that level lol
I feel like these games are the equivalent of Hollywood retellings of historical events with many creative liberties, but within the SW universe. Kinda like a tall tale for the kids
That's an interesting theory!
Good vid man, thanks! Took me back, i'd played the hell out of these.
The Bespin "bug people" i thought was one of the bounty hunters Vader hired (yeah, somehow that small group of individuals got cloned like a MF and were running all over that stage... 😂
Took me FOREVER to beat Jedi, a pox upon the house of who designed that damned escape the Death star stage!!
Yes it's a bounty hunter. The commenter's on here have made it clear I've made a terrible mistake lol
@@WesDoesGames No shortage of that! 😂
I last played these on an emulator with retro achievements on. It was a blast.
You forgot the worst Star Wars offense of all the power of many
4:02 Sigourney Weaver’s character asked the same question in Galaxy Quest
The hardest for me is the first one cause you get the light saber after a long time. Or it felt like a long time cause I keep dying when I was a kid. Never finished the game. Even with emulators I think I will use save states. These games were really made so hard just so that you can't be them in a week end if you rented them
8:59 The "insect people"? That's one of the bounty hunters hired by Vader. (and respawned in the game ad nauseam, of course :DD) Couldn't remember the name, so googled: 4-LOM. And a droid, not an insectoid.
I used my game genie on these games. I still love them!
Super empire strikes back is the best in this trilogy, especially the audio, that yoda jungle stage music is sublime
Christmas 1992 I worked over the holidays and earned £100, knowing super Star Wars had just came in to the console shop on import I bought it the first day back at school (it was £70 but I felt like a millionaire with my earnings) on lunch break. Wow, all the kids from school knocked on my front door that night to see it.
the new trilogy needs a side scrolling platforming game
These games were amazing but yes they threw everything at you in the game. Like unlimited ENEMIES!!
These games are really cool but, as pointed out, quite challenging.
For those who want to lessen the challenge:
The very similar Star Wars Trilogy - Apprentice of the Force for GBA is also a great 2d game about Ep. 4-6
I was always curious about that game but was put off by the art style. It looks like a flash game
I wish they’d rerelease these. Make them available on online platforms.
Luke Skywalker ANH: " But why would Imperial Troops want to slaughter Jawas?"
Well, to find out where the droids are Luke. The big question is, why would YOU want to slaughter Jawas in the ANH SNES game?
For funsies
They should remake this trilogy... and add Scorpion Vader as a secret boss.
The titles honestly crack me up.
Sure, "Super Star Wars" sounds good enough, just like other SNES games from pre-established series having "Super" in the title like "Super Metroid"... but then you have "Super The Empire Strikes Back" and "Super Return of the Jedi" which just sound silly.
God, imagine if the first one was called "Super A New Hope."
Super Force Awakens. It's super awakened, you guys
I had Super Star Wars as a kid. It was brutally difficult. I never beat it.
I beat return of the Jedi as a kid but could barely get passed the first stages on the other two
All three of these games were criminally hard, I love challenging games but these games made me want to break the controller in half, they really weren't that much fun because of it
Another great video dude 👏
Thank you!
I bought Empire on SNES used, and it was password-locked. I was crushed.
0:16 You are correct, the originals aren't perfect, but let's not pretend those 1997 cartoons were original.
Boomer-ass opinion.
Woof, cartoons is harsh, but I get it. Those changes were mostly bad (especially the three hour shot of the giant lizard covering the screen)
@@WesDoesGames You wouldn't call the replacement musical number in Jabba's palace a cartoon? With that that little brown furry guy that looks like the one from the Honeycomb cereal commercials?
@KasumiKenshirou 😂☠️
@@garretthberne3035 "Everyone over 30 is a BoOmERrrR!"
I loved these games so much. Peak SNES!
Not the final level of Super Return of the Jedi! Make the bad level go away. (Beating that nightmare on Easy took me years.)
I rented Super Return of the Jedi multiple times when I was a kid.
I managed to beat Star Wars and Empire but never got the chance for Jedi.
The checkpoints help a lot, but the last two stages are troublesome if you don’t know to press the “speed up” button.
Finally managed circa 2004 to beat it legit, but don’t think I’ll even find it a fun level.
I will *never* be okay with Chewbacca not getting a medal with Han and Luke. Definitely a fair time to pull the race card imo
He eventually got one in the sequels if that makes a difference lol
at the time they were the best sw games for me
That was probably pretty easy considering the games that came out before it, lol
I remember beating these games after the first week. I find your lack of gaming skills disturbing.
Impressive. Most impressive
Love these games. Shame the New Hope one never had passwords though. I was never able to finish that one.
