I was a contract assistant production accountant on this movie. The work was boring & repetitive but working at Dreamworks Animation was amazing. You are surrounded by some of the most extremely talented and creative animators and artists on earth who loved their jobs. This was during peak DVD sales too (before streaming) so the studio was floating in money. The holiday party was at San Francisco City Hall and was completely Megamind themed. The crew gift (still have it) was a black Megamind cape with a big M on the back. The funniest most random part of my job was paying the celebrity voice actors. Had this ‘they are real people too! moment’ while reviewing a copy of Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, & Will Ferrell’s driver’s licenses, signed contracts, passports and I9’s to pay them!

funny how that's always how it seems to go. the quality product goes underrated and unnoticed, while the product with better marketing potential boosts to fame. sad really that even when it comes to things like stories the lower quality stuff wins (not saying DM is bad quality, it's still good generally, but in direct comparison to MM it's just not _as_ good) because the competition tragically has nothing to do with the story/product itself, only the ability to advertise and profit. :/ but on the bright side, it creates gems that people get to discover and appreciate even more down the line.

One of the most under-appreciated animated films ever made! I love everything about Megamind's character, and how the whole plot of him eventually becoming a hero works!
He was never an evil person at heart. He only became what he believed he was destined to based on how everyone viewed him, while having no vendetta against anyone. Eventually he discovers both him and Metro Man were dealing with the same issues, only to realize that fate doesn't decide your purpose. Only you can decide that for yourself!
If this movie wasn't released around the same time as Despicable Me, I believe it would've been a bigger success! It is 100% a better movie!

One thing, I enjoy about Metroman retiring to go to music makes sense. People have talked about this already, but he choose music since it is the one ability that his powers don’t give him. His powers give him super strength, super speed, flight, and laser vision, yet music is something he can make his own without his powers.

Guillermo del Toro served as a creative consultant in the movie, btw. It might explain some of the visual coolness, too.
Metro Man was hoping for this outcome and it's pretty sweet that his final act of heroism was giving a chance to this guy who was never given one.

While I agree that it's exceptionally rare, Fred Rogers, of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, was every bit the kind soul he appeared to be. Yeah, Megamind launched against Despicable Me with a similar premise (The Incredibles but supervillains), but Despicable Me had the insta-marketing power of the Minions behind it so did far, far better - despite pretty much everyone who sees it preferring Megamind. It's shocking how often two very similar movies will launch against each other (in animation alone, Antz vs A Bug's Life, anyone?).

Megamind was never the type of jerk who hurts you. Not on purpose anyway.
He would SEVERELY INCONVENIENCE you any day of the week. He would kick your car across the street without a second thought. He would punch a hole in your house and not feel guilty about it. He would bring your whole day to a screeching halt with his latest scheme just for funsies.
    But DIRECTLY HURT someone?
    Never!
    Not on purpose anyway.
Doesn't really stop him from being a jerk though. It just makes him a more sympathetic one.

I think megamind and metroman were forced into the roles that they had and to them it was more about the theatrics with it. I especially think Metroman never properly saw megamind as a villain, especially when they were adults and it was more of a game to him. It’s refreshing they didn’t just make metroman just a douche who’s the bad guy but actually made it so they have this respect fir each other as well.
Hal is so gross tho… it’s the fact people like him exist in real life, he’s the typical ‘nice guy’ who thinks woman owe him something because he’s nice to them

    • @bigdream_dreambig

But Hal's _not_ nice; he's self-absorbed and lacks empathy. Narcissistic. That's why this trope really bothers me.
