Megamind is a gem, that (un)fortunately got shadowed by Despicable Me. There are no sequels or spin-offs and while that may sound sad it allowed the movie to be a very special stand-alone thing
But if she wanted a movie similar to this one, Despicable Me would be it. I know there’s other villain to hero movies but I’m drawing a blank. Megamind is way better than Despicable Me, though.
Some things are better left as what they are. And this is one of those movies that told a complete story, and had no need for anything further. The plot was wrapped up, every character had their story arc with a beginning, middle, and end, and were all left with nowhere else to go beyond pandering cash grabs.
Watching this movie really gave a major point of Megamind's character. To him, this whole villainy thing was just a game. He wasn't in it to hurt anyone, he just enjoyed the metaphors of hero and villain and zest in the thrill of the fight. If all he wanted was power, he would have just given it all to himself instead. Tighten, on the other hand is sinister because he takes this seriously. He's not goofy, he's not funny, he's just a terrible person who only cares about personal gain and vindication. That's what a real supervillain looks like.
Megamind blasting Welcome to the Jungle was one of the best experiences I've ever had in a movie theatre. Full ass men were grinning ear to ear next to me completely absorbed into this movie.
A cool detail about Metro/Music Man. He chose music was because it was the only thing he wasn't instantly perfect at. He was so bored with life--music would actually require work and practice and thus gave him meaning.
Big Hero 6, The Emperor's New Groove, The Adventures of Tintin, and The Mitchells vs the Machines are all excellent animated movies - and Tintin and Mitchells have shockingly few reaction videos for how good they are.
I'm not too sure about the other ones, but tintin probably doesn't get a lot of reactions for 2 reasons. First, because it's not part of a big trend of movies. For example, once you do a disney classic, you do all of them. Once you make a kung fu panda or how to train your dragon, you'll make the other because of franchises have a huge common fanbase. Once you do a hero animated movie like despicable me, you're likely to do megamind, rise of the legends and big hero 6 as they are the same trend. Tintin on the other hand is it's own thing, so unless you make it, you're not really going to see demand for it. The second reaspn could be that the film and franchise isn't that huge in the US which is the main audience targeted by reacrion chanels, so they aren't seeing much demand for it
My favorite part about Megamind's rise to "evil" is just a reaction to rejection and failure. It was simpler to run counter, and as a bad guy, he wasn't supposed to be accepted or succeed
Megamind has gained so much steam in the last decade or so. I absolutely love it. It's well written with plenty of twists and gags. The humor is ridonkulous, the song choices were spot on, and its immensely quotable! I use "Ollo" from time to time and absolutely love Megamind screaming, "MY GIANT BLUE HEAD!!" 🤣🤣🤣
"Space Dad" was a parody of Marlon Brando's character in Superman, where he played Kal-El's father, Jor-El. The way Megamind talked and looked was very "Marlon Brando in his later years."
It's funny, I believe my brother-in-law saw this movie before the MCU, and he said that Iron Man reminded him of the 'PRESENTATION!' bit. Like how he'd make his entrances to AC/DC's 'Shoot to Thrill'. Space Dad... hmmm, it does look a bit like Marlon Brando as Jor-El in the 1978 Superman movie.
Megaminds purpose wasn’t to be “Evil”, he just didn’t have a purpose. Since he kept getting treated as the bad guy, he just assumed that’s what he was supposed to be.
Have you noticed when the appearance changing watch was used, the eye color stayed. Warden has blue/gray eyes and Minion has Brown. So when Megamind was asking to be let go to fight Titan you could already see it wasn't the real Warden. :) Or Bernard has brown eyes, Megamind has green. There is inconsistency in that though, when Minion is disguised as Megamind. Great reaction to amazing movie, thank you for sharing!
One theory I’ve heard is that Minion is using a better watch that can also replicate eye colour. After all, he did need a second watch because Megamind had the other. Another theory is that since Minion and Megamind are so close to each other, the watch is able to replicate eye colour. In reality, it probably is just an animation error but it’s interesting to come up with possible diagetic explanations.
@@quakxy_dukx I don't think it was s animation error. I think it was deliberate to not spoil the surprise too soon for those who noticed the eyes. I really do like the advanced watch theory though.
You should definitely watch the original Superman movie. Megamind’s Space Dad was a direct parody of Marlon Brando’s Joe-El (Superman’s real father). Also this movie also parodied Superman’s flight with Lois Lane with Titan and Roxanne’s flight down to the bit where Superman lets Lois fall but that movie played it out as whimsical and romantic while this movie rightly points out that was messed up.
It wasn't "messed up" in Superman because it wasn't deliberate. That moment isn't played as romantic, but the rest of the flight is. Every moment with Tighten is shown as messed up because it is.
On the topic of Funny Animated Movies, The Emperor's New Groove is a MUST WATCH if you haven't seen it already. One of my favorite movies of all time, still watch it 20 years later
The girl in Cyrano de Bergerac was Roxanne too. I see some Cyrano in this. Megamind didn't think Roxanne could look past what his appearance, so he had to woo her from a disguise that she could accept.
this is my favourite movie and one of the best examples of Good vs "Nice" Hal was just a Nice guy who pretended to be good only to get what he wanted. megamind, was good at heart and never actually wanted to hurt anyone, he just got pushed down the wrong path of how to get what he wanted from life. metroman is probably the most interesting character, since he was born with all these powers and basically put above everyone else, he had literally nowhere to go, so he went along with megamind for some kind of purpose, but it was just fake. so he quit and went to music, something he's bad at and can improve on so he feels like he gets somehwere in life
Shame it was overshadowed by Despicable Me. The fact that Megamind was forgiven for his years of criminality and creating Titan is a little difficult, but such a great movie. I loved that the police were so spoiled by Metro Man’s heroism that they had no idea how to act. Firing into the air, not trying to stop Megamind.
I'd say that within the context of this universe, him being forgiven for his criminality is justified. He was considered a joke by everyone, more like entertainement than a real vilain. He also probably never really hurt anyone, so again, it was more a fun routine thing for the city than a true terror. The only moment he became really bad wasafter beating metroman, and even then, he vandamized a few buildings but that's it. You noticed the police being unable to do anything because of metroman, but the same applies to megamind. Titan was the first true vilain they ever saw, one who didn't play a game but who truly wanted to do evil because he doesn't care. The ciry is defenseless against such a vilain. So, because they grew used to relying on metroman to be their hero, they chose megamind to become the new one because they can't live without a hero figure. Also, except roxanne, I'mpretty sure nobody knows he created titan, and roxane knows he didn't do it for evil, so she won't tell anyone
@@johndaily263I always thought that the implication was that after Metro Man turned into Megamind in front of everyone people just thought that he was just a character created by Megamind the entire time.
The movie was so good!! Also notice how Roxanne's outfit changes as she interacts with Megamind. At the start it was Red the opposite of Megamind's blue.. Then in the middle it was purple and by the end it was blue!
also another side note, you can tell by the colors roxanne wears through out the movie starting by the color red representing the full oposite of blue or as some would say it represents metroman, going to purple (a mix between blue and red) when he is starting to get to know roxanne and fall in love, to finally wear full blue at the end of the movie, representing the growth megamind had in her.
I LOVE this movie! It's so much fun and a wonderful homage to Superhero films. The reveal of how Metro Man faked his death was so unexpected. Fun facts: The film's plot was based on the premise: "What if Lex Luthor defeated Superman?" Hal's "space dad" is modeled after Marlon Brando, as Superman's father from the original Superman film. Hal Stewart is named after two characters who have held the title of the Green Lantern, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to the original Master Mind script, Metro Man's civilian name is Wayne Scott after two Golden Age DC Comics heroes (Bruce Wayne/Batman and Alan Scott/Green Lantern)
I love that all the mispronunciations that Megamind does is because he was kicked out of school so learned to pronounce a lot of words on how someone who didn't grow up knowing the weird pronunciation rules American English has. Like school. If you were just learning it you wouldn't pronounce the "ch" as a "k". Either that, or he is so intelligent that he thinks everyone else is mispronouncing them because they are stupid and it doesn't make any sense to say things the way we do.
The Space Dad joke is a reference to Marlon Brando's performance as Jor-El (Superman's dad) in the 1978 Superman film starring Christopher Reeve. Highly recommend that film, if you haven't seen it.
Megamind is perhaps my all time favorite Movie, it’s the Most Clever, Funny, Emotional, Relatable, and Brilliant Film with a lot of Unexpected Twists, the Message of Choice, and a Unique Take of Good and Evil.
The "space dad" was a reference to Superman's father, originally played by Marlon Brando. One of Brando's most famous roles was The Godfather, which is what they were imitating with his voice. So the "space dad" was a bit of a double-dip reference.
"Space Dad" is a nod to the 1978 Superman movie, where Marlon Brando (a famous serious actor of the day) played Superman's Kryptonian father and is mainly seen as a holographic projection who explains things to Superman and is sort of a mentor to him.
I just love how Roxanne treats her kidnapping, like it's just another day. It's also the first hint how long and often they did the same stick. It's the perfect setup for when they discover that Metro man is still alive and reveals why he faked his death. And while Megamind keeps the cycle going, he is making himself into a victim of the cycle, trapped, doomed to repeat himself again and again. And yes, Metro man went easy on Megamind. Considering the speed he shows in the flashback, he could have stopped Megamind from escaping at any time or at least have him back behind bars in the blink of an eye. Thankfully no one knew the full extend of his powers or Tighten would have been impossible to defeat.
Honestly there is just so much subtle care in every part of this movie, little background jokes and details everywhere. And with the excellent writing and animation i really wish it did better when it came out.
There is a theory that the warden let the prisoners keep the baby so the government didn't take him. I mean, *alien* baby, who knows what they'd do? So he pulled some strings and got the kid to stay there, where he could watch the child and make sure no one took him. Its just a theory, but I feel its pretty plausible. That, and the headcanon that the Warden is his father figure. Also, Space Dad was playing on Superman's dad, plus the Godfather!
Even before the MCU peaked, this movie asked 3 questions: "What if you had the power to do good but were lead to believe you're evil?", "What if you had powers but you just don't want to spend your life fighting evil?" and "What if you gave power to an unworthy person?".
I had so much fun on your livestream. I’m happy to saw me several times in the chat! And thank you for your sympathies on my dying cat. It means so much to me.
Space Dad is a reference to the old Christopher Reeves's Superman movies in most Superman iterations his dad comes to him as a hologram or an AI version of his personality in the Christopher Reeves movies he was played by Marlon Brando but Megamind chose to use an older Brando from the Godfather with a puffy cheeks and the slurred words as a joke to the character
Megamind isn’t deaf (note the look he exchanges with Roxanne when “MusicMan” starts playing). But there was a real villain out there to stop; the goal was to convince MetroMan to return to the job: this was _not_ the time to get sidetracked in a debate over his level of musical ability, or lack thereof.
I always love seeing you react to Hans Zimmer having done the score when you reach the credits. Part of the reason you see him everywhere, at least in this case, is that HZ is head of the music division at DreamWorks. So he'll do his share of DreamWorks movies every now and then.
I always wil like how relieved Megamind looks for a second when he thinks Metroman is coming for him after the observertory expodes.(6:57) It clearly shows he has no actual intention to kill him.
27:45 Space Dad is a reference to Jor'El Superman's biological father from Superman. In the original superman movie he was player by Marlon Brando and looked and talked kind of like that.
Bernard was dehrdarted and kept in Megamind's coat. So he turned out to be in the washing machine, because when they washed the coat, he got hydrated and turned to Bernard again
at this point, someone probably aready said it... but you know why metroman decided to become a musician? because it is something that his super powers cannot help him with... troughout all his ife, everything was easy for him, everything he tried, he scuceeded, music is something that one needs to practice to become good at, and that is what he wanted, he wanted to acctuly feel like he diserved something, he wanted to reach something trough hardwork! metroman is such a human character and i love it
19:27 "He's alive! He's alive!" Of course. Who ever heard of a superhero dying by coming into contact with _copper?_ I mean, what kind of superhero can't carry around _pennies?_
Thanks for sharing your reaction to this. "Megamind" and "Elf" are my favorite Will Ferrell films. This and "How To Train Your Dragon" are my favorite animated movies. I'm glad that you also enjoyed it.
Somewhere in the multiverse is a universe where Megamind came out first. It was then followed by Megamind 2, a movie starring Minion, Megamind 3, and Megamind: Teenage Angst. Also, Dreamworks ended up buying a floundering Illumination.
Megamind is fantastic. I've seen it several times and it still makes me laugh. We reference Arachnis Deathicus and "You were right. I was less right" a lot.
The theory behind Metro Man choosing to learn music is because unlike every other 'talent' he has which he seemed to be born with , music is the only thing he wasnt born to know , he has to learn it like everyone else. Its really interesting
Space Dad was a play on Marlon Brando's performance as space dad Jor-El in the 1970's Superman movie, mixed with a bit of Brando's mush mouth as Don Corleone in The Godfather. GOOD STUFF!
Re: the Space Dad: in the original Superman movie, Jor-El (Superman's Kryptonian father) was played by Marlon Brando. So Space Dad was modelled after Marlon Brando... but specifically, he was modelled after how Brando played Don Vito Corleone in the Godfather. :)
The Space dad was a reference to the old Superman movies in which Marlon Brando played his father. He was doin an impression of the way that the actor speaks.
The Space Dad thing was a reference to Superman's dad in the Superman movie from 1978. Also, I'm glad Megamind doesn't have a sequel because it's just fine as a standalone film
Hey V the space dad thing was a mix of the actor who played Superman's dad in the Christopher Reeves Superman movies and The Godfather. I hope that helps
Love how Megamind calls Metro City...Metrocity like Atrocity...lol 🤣 I get the feeling that Hal Stewart's name is a combination of HAL Jordan and John STEWART who in DC Comics both are Green Lanterns for earth...both heroes. Even if Titan turned out to be a villain. There are also a group of heroes in DC called the Teen Titans. Made up of the Justice Leagues sidekicks. Then there is "Space Dad" who looks like Superman's Kryptonian father Jor-El and sounds like a Marlon Brando impression who played Jor-El in 1978s Superman The Movie. So quite a few DC references. I Think the copper weakness was making fun of Superman not being able to see through lead and Kryptonite which takes away his powers. Lol 🤣 If you have not seen Monsters Vs. Aliens ...it has a similar vibe just with movie monster tropes and alien tropes. Steve Colbert I think plays the President dealing with the alien crisis. Reese Witherspoon plays Susan Murphy and Paul Rudd plays Derek Dietl and Hugh Laurie plays Dr. Cockroach.

Looked through the comments to see if anyone explained the 'Space Dad' thing but didn't see that anyone did. It was a callback to Superman from 1977 with Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando as his Kryptonian (Space) Dad. The way he talked was a charicature of him. But funny.

But if she wanted a movie similar to this one, Despicable Me would be it. I know there’s other villain to hero movies but I’m drawing a blank. Megamind is way better than Despicable Me, though.
there is however a video game
Some things are better left as what they are. And this is one of those movies that told a complete story, and had no need for anything further. The plot was wrapped up, every character had their story arc with a beginning, middle, and end, and were all left with nowhere else to go beyond pandering cash grabs.
That queen of England clip was used sooo much after her death it was pretty funny I’ll admit, people were ready with it for years
Watching this movie really gave a major point of Megamind's character.
This movie is such a blast and a great spin on the Superman and Lex Luthor dynamic.
I hope this movie isn't forgotten, it deserves to be remembered as a classic.
Just like Deadpool said in his movie: „You don’t need to be a hero to get the girl. The right girl brings the hero out of you.“
This is one of those rare movies that, for me at least, gets better with every rewatch
The second reaspn could be that the film and franchise isn't that huge in the US which is the main audience targeted by reacrion chanels, so they aren't seeing much demand for it
I agree, Tintin was a fantastic and epically animated movie. Definity should have more reactions.
"Hal's Space Dad" is a parody of Marlon Brando's Jor-El from _Superman_ waaaay back in 1978.
But he's doing the voice of the godfather Brando. Probably because he watched it more often than Superman
This is the most quotable movie. Literally every line can be a quote
Sorry but, nope. That title goes to Mean Girls.
"Say 'crack' again"
That’s true about any movie, TV Show, book, song, speech, or conversation.
One of my absolute favorite animated films.
This is unironically a fantastic superhero movie. Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame is a movie I'd wholeheartedly recommend
"Well, good luck on your date!"
"I will!"
I don't know why, but this line makes me laugh out loud every single time.
Jor-El* 😊
On the topic of Funny Animated Movies, The Emperor's New Groove is a MUST WATCH if you haven't seen it already. One of my favorite movies of all time, still watch it 20 years later
Yes
Yes
The girl in Cyrano de Bergerac was Roxanne too. I see some Cyrano in this. Megamind didn't think Roxanne could look past what his appearance, so he had to woo her from a disguise that she could accept.
this is my favourite movie and one of the best examples of Good vs "Nice"
Hal was just a Nice guy who pretended to be good only to get what he wanted. megamind, was good at heart and never actually wanted to hurt anyone, he just got pushed down the wrong path of how to get what he wanted from life.
metroman is probably the most interesting character, since he was born with all these powers and basically put above everyone else, he had literally nowhere to go, so he went along with megamind for some kind of purpose, but it was just fake. so he quit and went to music, something he's bad at and can improve on so he feels like he gets somehwere in life
Shame it was overshadowed by Despicable Me.
@@docomega7862 Still, everyone thinks he murdered Metro Man.
@@johndaily263I always thought that the implication was that after Metro Man turned into Megamind in front of everyone people just thought that he was just a character created by Megamind the entire time.
Take that back. Despicable Me was great. We rarely have Father - Daughter movies much less ones this good.
@@docomega7862 He was not forgiven. His punishment was downgraded to community service to rebuild the city.
The movie was so good!!
Also notice how Roxanne's outfit changes as she interacts with Megamind.
At the start it was Red the opposite of Megamind's blue..
Then in the middle it was purple and by the end it was blue!
Such a stacked voice acting cast 😂😂 wish we got more
also another side note, you can tell by the colors roxanne wears through out the movie starting by the color red representing the full oposite of blue or as some would say it represents metroman, going to purple (a mix between blue and red) when he is starting to get to know roxanne and fall in love, to finally wear full blue at the end of the movie, representing the growth megamind had in her.
I LOVE this movie! It's so much fun and a wonderful homage to Superhero films. The reveal of how Metro Man faked his death was so unexpected.
Fun facts: The film's plot was based on the premise: "What if Lex Luthor defeated Superman?"
Hal's "space dad" is modeled after Marlon Brando, as Superman's father from the original Superman film.
One of the most underrated movies ever honestly
With The Godfather voice.
Thanks for noticing David Cross. I think you're the 1st reactor I've seen watch this that even mentions him and he's a gd comedy legend.
Brad Pitt as Metro Man is the most funny and awesome casting ever lol
"Space Dad" is a nod to the 1978 Superman movie, where Marlon Brando (a famous serious actor of the day) played Superman's Kryptonian father and is mainly seen as a holographic projection who explains things to Superman and is sort of a mentor to him.
the most underrated animated comedy ive ever seen in theaters next to lego batman
*shtick (or schtick)
Honestly there is just so much subtle care in every part of this movie, little background jokes and details everywhere. And with the excellent writing and animation i really wish it did better when it came out.
I just realized the warden was there but younger when Megamind got on the bus. The man literally watched the blue man grow up
There is a theory that the warden let the prisoners keep the baby so the government didn't take him.
"We're having the walls and ceiling removed"
He says, in a place without walls nor a ceiling
Lol
Even before the MCU peaked, this movie asked 3 questions: "What if you had the power to do good but were lead to believe you're evil?", "What if you had powers but you just don't want to spend your life fighting evil?" and "What if you gave power to an unworthy person?".
I had so much fun on your livestream. I’m happy to saw me several times in the chat! And thank you for your sympathies on my dying cat. It means so much to me.
Your puckered lips look was absolutely hilarious! You pull it off so naturally and effortlessly its hysterical!
"I'll just pack my thing and go!" is one of my favorite lines, gets me every time lol
The "Space Dad" bit is a spoof of Marlin Brando's portrayal of Jor-El from the Superman movie.
Megamind’s “space father” illusion was a parody of Marlon Brando’s portrayal of Jor-El from Superman.
Bernard was dehrdarted and kept in Megamind's coat. So he turned out to be in the washing machine, because when they washed the coat, he got hydrated and turned to Bernard again
at this point, someone probably aready said it... but you know why metroman decided to become a musician? because it is something that his super powers cannot help him with... troughout all his ife, everything was easy for him, everything he tried, he scuceeded, music is something that one needs to practice to become good at, and that is what he wanted, he wanted to acctuly feel like he diserved something, he wanted to reach something trough hardwork! metroman is such a human character and i love it
12:09 is a callback to the 1978 Superman movie where Marlon Brando played, Jor-El, Superman's father.
We love Megamind in this house. It is so underrated.
i love how you say metro man is condescending while he literally walks on water :D
Nothing will ever beat the, "Presentation!" moment for me.
Epic
19:27 "He's alive! He's alive!"
Of course.
The queen of England joke has aged like fine wine cos it’s true now 😂 that always cracked me up and it’s just been made even more real
Also a great kids/adults movie "Monsters vs. Aliens"
Another great cast in that one. Wish I had seen it in the theater in 3-D.
The Space dad was a reference to the old Superman movies in which Marlon Brando played his father. He was doin an impression of the way that the actor speaks.
21:39 that joke did not age well!!😭🤣
Ps - love your reactions!
That or it aged really well
The Space Dad thing was a reference to Superman's dad in the Superman movie from 1978. Also, I'm glad Megamind doesn't have a sequel because it's just fine as a standalone film
Loved the reaction as always. If you're ever looking for another superhero comedy, there's always Mystery Men with Ben Stiller.
Hey V the space dad thing was a mix of the actor who played Superman's dad in the Christopher Reeves Superman movies and The Godfather. I hope that helps
Love how Megamind calls Metro City...Metrocity like Atrocity...lol 🤣
I get the feeling that Hal Stewart's name is a combination of HAL Jordan and John STEWART who in DC Comics both are Green Lanterns for earth...both heroes.
Lol 🤣
If you have not seen Monsters Vs. Cockroach.
I swear Titan also made me feel uncomfortable whenever he appeared on screen in the cinema.
And I was a child back then 😂
Watched this movie back in 2015..underrated af,enjoyed every bit of it ,brings back nostalgia and your reaction was a cherry on top..you have a new subscriber ig😉❤❤
Space Dad is a pastiche of Marlon Brando's portrayal of Jor-El, Superman's dad, in the 1978 Superman movie starring Christopher Reeves.
Emperor's New Groove: _"Allow me to introduce myself."_
"Space Dad" is a reference to Marlon Brando as he looked in SUPERMAN (1978).
Looked through the comments to see if anyone explained the 'Space Dad' thing but didn't see that anyone did. It was a callback to Superman from 1977 with Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando as his Kryptonian (Space) Dad. The way he talked was a charicature of him. But funny.
Tighten was not misspelled, Megamaind could not copyright any other name since they were all taken as he said before. Nice reaction.
Good video.. Megamind is one of my favourite movies.. 'Wreck it Ralph' and 'Big Hero 6' are really good too..
"That's a rich lady scream." 😂😂😂 You got me Vee, you got me. This was a ton of fun! Thanks for the reaction. You always bring it.
Yes! I love this movie and is terribly underrated for its story telling and villain characterization.
I hope that you consider Chungking Express, it’s both cute and very “deep” in its feelings and I’m sure you’d have a lot to say about it! Continue on with the foreign films!
Love the reaction today!
Space Dad was a reference to Jor El who was Superman’s father. More specifically referencing Marlin Brando who first portrayed him in 1978.
Super Pets is a similar movie.
Bolt is a similar movie.
Both have stacked casts and great animations and storylines.
✌️🥰🌺
