To add, the only reason there was no Marvel stinger is because Disney heavily modified the original story. Big Hero 6 was originally a subsidiary of the X-Men as most of the heroes were also mutants. Since this was before Disney bought Fox, Disney had to make a lot of changes to avoid running into issues with the X-Men IP.

I love that Baymax doesn't suddenly become sentient, or develop a "soul". He is simply following his programming, just like any other machine, but because of his design and the fact that he is ridiculously advanced, to the point he is able to mimic human behavior makes it easy for us to get attached to him. While a lot of writers drop the ball with A.I characters, they nailed it here.

    • @fawfulfan
      @fawfulfan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Yep, Baymax is fairly realistic in terms of what an AI hero would be capable of. On the flip side, Auto from WALL-E is the perfect demonstration of what a real AI villain would be like.

    Small trivia morsel:
In avengers: age of ultron, when Tony is choosing a new A.I. for the iron man suit one of the drives is labelled 'Tadashi'. Always assumed it was a nod to Big Hero 6.

A detail that goes unnoticed by a lot of people is during Baymax’s ultimate sacrifice. If you look into Hiro’s eyes, he doesn’t see Baymax, he sees Tadashi. Because in that moment, Hiro feels like he’s losing Tadashi all over again, since Baymax is the last gift Tadashi gave him. It’s a heartbreaking detail that takes an eagle eye or paused screen to see

I actually think "They died when I was three, remember?" is pretty good as far as "as you know" type exposition goes. Hiro's basically saying "why are you asking me what our parents would have thought, how would I know, I don't remember them." So the line conveys information to the audience while also delivering emotional damage to the recipient character.

  • @lelandvaughan4429
    @lelandvaughan4429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Random Trivia!!!!
Baymax says 'Falalalala' because his programming doesn't account for making random sounds, only language, so he just puts in some syllables instead.
The scene where Hiro rides on Baymax and sees himself in the reflection is basically the same shot of Hiro on the back of Tadashi's moped.
Honey Lemon's chemical purse has the periodic table on it, ya girl is doing high level chemical equations on the fly.
I really love this movie. It's a movie about invention, creation, and innovation. It's about applying your knowledge in the best way possible. Having grown up in the US, I really wish I'd had some of the opportunities to apply my passions when I was young.

In the Big Hero 6 universe the Japanese population of San Francisco played a major role in the reconstruction after The Great 1906 San Francisco Earth Quake leading to the city being heavily influenced by Japanese architecture so in honor of them and better reflect the new state of the city they renamed it San Fransokyo

I remember distinctly how hard I took Tadashi's death and his mourning more than my brother when we saw this in theaters.. At the time he was still in university for a STEM job, working in similar scientific labs. We have a 12 year age gap between us, so I liked the dynamic Hiro and Tadashi had, it felt much more like us. My brother didn't realize why I had cried for a bit at his death until he asked afterwards why it him me more than him, and I had to explain how it gave me a look into a future where if my older brother, who is at a university lab most of the day dies in an accident, I wouldn't be able to cope with it.
Anyways, we both love this movie, and the research into the science of everything should be the standard for other fiction out there. Cause it's cool.

I'm disappointed but also very grateful that I will never have to know the pain of losing a sibling because I'm an only child. I always wanted a sibling, it's lonely being an only child. But if I had a sibling and lost them I don't know what I'd do. Cause after all your siblings are there for you when your parents or guardians can't be. If something happens to your parents you and your sibling(s) will still have each other. If something happens to my mom I'll be all alone. You guys are both very lucky and I hope you and your siblings live long healthy lives.

The comic Big Hero 6 starts originally with Hiro being a super genius level fanboy of Sunfire the atomic fire powered Japanese X-Man who wanted to be a hero just like him. Sunfire at that point in the late 90’s was also basically the biggest and most well known Japanese Superhero in the canon of Marvel Comics. They had a single miniseries that introduced Hiro, Baymax, Go Go, and Honey Lemon and then they made a few other appearances in other comic series. Then they did a later miniseries/revamp 10 years after the first where all of the previously introduced characters starting looking more like their eventual movie counterparts and they also finally introduce both Wasabi and Fred to the team.

I worked as a photographer at Epcot for about a year and took several thousand photos of kids meeting Baymax (and made several thousand pennies doing it! 🥴). Hiro's Workshop was my personal favorite place to shoot. It was indoors and thus air-conditioned, generally much quieter and less crowded than most other spots, good music, Baymax himself is pretty chill (obvi), and a majority of kids were super jazzed to exchange a fist bump which was fun to watch because you could tell they were making a core memory. It's about the only thing I miss from that job.

Initially, the origin of San Fransokyo was an "alternate universe" outcome of the real-life event of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Japanese immigrants helped rebuild by contributing key Japanese building techniques that allowed the city to prevail in the face of the seismic events like never before (since, of course, Japan has dealt with earthquakes for far longer). San Francisco was renamed San Fransokyo in honor and recognition of it being a city reborn thanks to a combination of Japanese and American engineering skills. The floating things in the sky painted like fish are tethered wind turbines used to generate electricity. They are placed in the sky to capture the higher and more consistent wind speeds found at higher altitudes. These turbines are connected to the ground by tethers that transmit the electricity generated by the turbines.

    fun fact!:
someone's probably mentioned it in the comments, but the reason the city is like this is because, in-universe canonically, there was a huge earthquake that basically ruined the city of SanFran, and it was Japanese immigrants that helped rebuild the city, influencing the city's new architecture, landscape, and culture. the creators of the film wanted to create a SanFran that was a blending of Japanese and American vibes to parallel Hiro's biracial background, as well as showing the diversity of the city through the rest of the cast (black, korean, hispanic, and white).
also! Big Hero 6 is a old marvel comic, that's why Stan Lee appears in the film. however, the old comic is mmmm bad to put it simply, with orientalism and such. this film really only took the character names, the concept of a robot, and a boy genius and made their entire own thing for the film. DEFINITELY a face-lift glow up from the source material.

Stan Lee is in it because this is technically a Marvel property (there was a comic) and also because it's about superheroes. I showed this to my 80 year old parents and they both loved it (despite their initial misgivings about watching a "cartoon").

Super cute film. In the comics the team is put together by former X-men member Sunfire. It's set in Japan and all the characters are Japanese. The characters are pretty different. Hiro is still a boy genius, but it was his father who died,, and he built Baymax as a surrogate. Baymax is a transforming robot with a human bodyguard form, armored Iron Man type form, and dragon form. Honey Lemon's purse is an extra-dimensional portal from which she can basically pull whatever she needs. Go-go wears a battlesuit that absorbs and amplifies kinetic energy. Wasabi is a sushi chef who really wants to be a samurai, and Fred can create and operate psychkinetic kaiju. Sometimes it's only partially real, sometimes he fully transforms. Other members included Silver Samurai, Sunpyre, and Ebon Samurai. Extra fun, they had a crossover comic with Canada's own super team Alpha Flight.

I recommend the film Dino time. It's great, some big names and never heard of it until a random click on the android box... Now have it on dvd and watch it with my son about once a month.

So, the story behind San Fransokyo is that Tokyo helped rebuild San Francisco after the major earthquake, and so they renamed the city as a thank you:-)

Big Hero 6 is based on a Marvel comic. You wouldn't have thunk it, but there it is. What I love about Marvel is the amazing diversity of the source material.

There's a fan theory that Big Hero 6 takes place in the same Universe as Man in the High Castle, which would explain the Japanese influence on everything.

I really didn't care for this movie (imo plot was meh and the characters are kinda tropey and boring), but Baymax's physicality absolutely kills me. The way he looks at what he's holding, then looks where he wants to set it down, then carefully moves it over the spot, then lowers it,

Your reactions always make me laugh uncontrollably. The one liners that get thrown around...brilliant.Saw this particular movie when it came out and I enjoyed it so much I couldn't believe that Disney made it. A witty, clever and mature script uninterrupted by drippy musical numbers every ten minutes.Exactly the same way I felt walking out of the theatre after watching Wreck it Ralph.I've been binging your reactions ever since I saw a 'mass reaction' to a certain scene in the movie The Thing, and so far I've watched at least 6 back to back. Can't say I've done that before. You two are funny as hell and very entertaining.Maybe I'll watch just one more and then I'll finally go to sleep...it's two am.

funny story. went to watch this movie with an ex who brought her 10yr sister along. and this girl was smitten with Tadashi...and then he died. she spent the entire rest of the movie crying. and me being the jerk that I am. just kept laughing. because I have a friend that took her son to see hunger games. and she told me how distraught he was when you know who died. ah, young loves keen sting. HAHAHAAAHHAHAHAHA

Big Hero 6 is loosely inspired by a series of Marvel comics based on the same name. The team's abilities reflect their og counterparts but, if you get familiar with both, you can definitely see where Disney took some liberties.

Alternate history - in this world, there were a lot of Japanese immigrants in the San Francisco area instead of Chinese immigrants in the 1800's. After the 1906 earthquake, the wealthier white people moved out, and the remaining residents were mostly Japanese, so the "Little Tokyo" area basically took over the city.

I don't know if anyone had said this yet, I haven't seen anyone talk about it, but I remember reading a lore explanation from the creators when the concept images were release before this movie came out. They explained that at some point Sanfancisco had a huge econimic crisis at the same time a massive earthquake hit the city and destroyed everthing. The land was bought by Japanese businessmen and rebuilt by combining the efforts and style of American culture and Japanese culture.
Also some changes from the Comic, Baymax is a robot but is designed to look like a dragon. In the movie he was redsigned to have an Iron man influance. Wasabi is a combination of the Charcters Silver Sameria and Wasabi No Ginger. Fred's chacter is not form the comics but is a combination of the Superhero Sunfire (Being able to shoot fire) and the original design for Baymax (being a dragon creature). and Honey Lemon is a James Bond like spy in the comics with an bottomless purse where she keeps all her gadgets.

I love watching fellow nerds react to this, because they get all of the little bits and pieces of the story. But even there, you two did one of the best nerdy reactions I've seen to it so far, because in addition to getting all of the little nerdy bits (Science! Yeah!), you just so thoroughly enjoyed it.
Baymax is such a source of comedy gold, especially since at no time is he actually trying to be funny. He's just big and squooshy and caring and will do anything he can to make sure his patient is satisfied with their care.
I'm pretty sure those big fan things in the sky were wind turbines, catching the high winds over the city.

Big Hero 6 is a Marvel comics property but not part of the MCU. Disney chose to go a little lighter with their movie version compared to the comics which has some very serious members like Silver Samurai who was the villain in The Wolverine movie and Sunfire and Sunpyre who are X-Men. Stan Lee didn’t create the team but it was still a nice little touch to include him in the movie.

One thing I think the writers didn't consider (or hoped the audience would let slide) is the fact that Hiro's invention would have enabled him to establish his own tech company and make billions. With that company, he and any other researchers he wanted to hire and the tech his vast resources could afford, would surpass what the school could do or offer him. Basically, he and his brother could have established their own tech research business.

Not an animator so can’t be sure but the inflation and deflation could have been pretty easy. You can simulate pressure inside of a cloth material mesh, if they could key the pressure they could just simulate his plastic very easily, although it may have needed touching up afterwards and for a film grade model it would take a long time to simulate.
