Technically correct, as there hasn't been a Queen (or King) of England since 1707, when the Kingdom of England ceased to exist. The monarch at the time this movie was released was Elizabeth II as the Queen of the United Kingdom, but that isn't the same as the Queen of England as that title doesn't exist. So it was technically correct, the best kind of correct.
Something that I don't see get enough attention is how Megamind doesn't even think for a second to inject himself with Metro Man's power, even though it would make him virtually unstoppable. Really helps to show how he never wanted power, fame or fortune, he just wanted companionship and love.
A neat detail no one mentions is how Metroman's upbringing seems to imply that while his mother was there for him, his dad was distant, which you can see by him being unfazed at his adopted son flew around their living room. Megamind, however, had a surrogate family inside the prison that while they distorted his morality and taught him to be bad, they all seemed to genuinely care about him and were raising him as their own.
Also, it seems that he was also thrust into the Superhero role as a kid by everybody and never actually got to choose who he wanted to be either like Megamind which ultimately leads to Musicman even though he isn't talented in music. Then you have Hal who chooses to continue to make creepy advances on Roxanne and then chooses to do bad things when he gets powers. It's a really good story about choosing what kind of person you want to be instead of what other people want you to be.
@That Guy There were actually some responses by the Writer saying the he chose Music Man because it's the one thing his powers can't help him with so he has to work at it.
Another little detail is when Metroman confronts Megamind while in the observatory in the beginning, you can very briefly see him blink out of existence for a split second, which is the time he spent thinking about things and deciding to fake his own death.
I love how they completely danced around the obvious fact that hal is a textbook incel, He is the literally embodiment of "Girls are dumb for not liking me, I'm such a good guy". 😂
Incel has lost all meaning these days. Most Twitter users just use it to mean any man they disagree with. But you're right, Hal is a true incel in the original sense of the word.
@@roxtechs Hal is totally an incel: he perceives his relationship (such as it is) with Roxanne as transactional ("I'm nice to you, so you must be nice to me").
@@Merilirem I'm assuming that the person was jokingly saying that Blind Wave already reacted to The Room which is so bad that it's often joked about being the greatest movie in existence
Honestly, yeah. The best subversive superhero stories are from those who love the genre, not those who hate it. It’s why the original Boys comic is kind of terrible. The show is better, but feel it’s made zero progress in the past two seasons. Invincible on the other hand, is a darker take on the superhero genre, but Mark is still the quintessential superhero.
@@andrewli6606 The Boys show kinda does a “too mature” for the superhero genre take. But it doesn’t completely shove it down your throat like the comic book. The comic book is pretty terrible, I read like 20 chapters and it just wasn’t it. The show is fantastic though, and it can demonstrate that you CAN shit on the superhero genre without trying too hard to be “cool”. Megamind takes a different route as well but it’s more fun and kid friendly.
the thing about the Boys (both comic and show) is that its not even a superhero story at all. Its a story about toxic celebrities and the systems that create them, with a superhero theme painted on top. Thats why a some people who take it as a superhero story dont connect to it, cause thats just not what its really about.
@@bobross4616 Feel the show has slowed down to a crawl. Feel like very little has happened in the past two seasons. Like I'm very aware Homelander is evil and scary Superman who can do whatever he wants. It's not scary anymore, just annoying.
@@andrewli6606 I think its gotten better as time goes on. First season was its weakest to me. The first season was 7/10, 2nd was 8.5/10, 3rd one was going to be a 9/10 until the conclusion and it became 8/10 again. Arguably 7.5/10. Its really good. Homelander is very well acted, and their take on the public's perspective is always true and funny. Corporation greed and the corruption among people is show-cased well. Butcher is a great character and had some good moments in S3. ALOT of this show is comedy, and if it doesn't hit you then the show pretty much doesn't hit you. Which i really like the jokes and satire.
I still vividly remember cackling with laughter at the “forget me stick” moment when I saw this in theaters. Completely underrated film that holds up so well.
Fun detail about Megamind's disguise watch, it changes everything but the eye color. If you look real close Megamind's eye color never changes regardless of what disguise he's wearing.
instead of power corrupting hal, i think power *revealed* who he really was. he never really had much regard for roxanne's agency even before he got powers.
"This town isn't big enough for TWO supervillains!" "Oh you're a villain all right! Just not a SUPER one!" "Yeah?! What the difference?!" "PRESENTATION!!!!" I love this movie. I really want a sequel.
@@FallenOne669 Yes, yes, I know. By this point in time, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate was released, and I watched it too, and it wasn't that good. (I'm way outside its target audience anyway.) But I stand by what I said a year ago. When I said I wanted a sequel, I obviously meant a GOOD sequel, not the one we finally got.
One of the best things about Megaminds is that he was capable of giving himself superpowers easily, but he was set on solving everything with his intellect.
It looks like nobody in the comments has mentioned it yet - the "Megamind's Guide To Defending Your City" animated series is in production for Peacock. It was initially announced in February of last year and in August they said that the writing was complete and production was moving forward.
They changed the title to "Megamind Rules" and created a sequel movie, both premiering last week. I haven't seen them yet. Based on your comment, are they bad? Looking as I'm typing this, I see the sequel has gotten really bad reviews, so I'm going to guess the same is true for the series.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps yea just like words, this combination of letters doesn't mean anything in other countries and even less in other planets, just a human-made communication system/program.
When I first saw Megamind in cinemas with my Dad, I noticed him looking like he was dying inside when Highway To Hell started playing. He said to me afterwards "When I was a teenager, these were the songs it was rebellious to even listen to, the kind that parents would have moral panic over. Now it's played in a kid-friendly film like it's nothing. I feel old now..."
Fun fact, you can tell whenever Megamind is using the transformation watch because it doesn't changes the color of his eyes (which are green), so when he does Metromind, his eyes keep being green even though the character has blue eyes. Same when he does the warden at the start and when he does Bernard (who has brown eyes)!
Most underrated movie ever. What I like about this movie the most is how this movie portrays the “nice guy” as their isn’t really a lot of films or media that have that type of villain.
YES! This is one of my favourite films of all time, I remember my friend at university putting it on after like two other animated movies back to back and being frustrated - then realising I was so wrong. It's incredibly well written, voice acted, it's just so bloody fun. Can't wait to watch the guys react and happy (early) new year from London to anyone reading this! :)
One of the best animated movies of all time! There was a point in time Dreamworks produced nothing but masterpieces. The recent Puss in boots movies gives me hope that they will make a comeback.
So Megamind was originally written with Ben Stiller in mind. He couldn't do it because of scheduling conflicts, so he was given the role of Bernard. As for Tighten's name change, it was a low key way for the writers to show the corruption of Hal. When originally donned a super "hero", he was Titan, however, as he becomes evil, he transforms into "Tighten." The Guns N Roses confrontation is made even better when you realize Minion went all out for the "presentation," essentially that's what Minion thinks a supervillain *should* be. This movie is so dense full of fun things that it's a real shame Minions overshadowed this movie with only a few months separation. A Megamind 2 would have been awesome, but less is more, I suppose.
Hal was powerless, that's the reason he SEEMED harmless. Then he got the power to do what he'd always imagined. Hal was the Nice Guy(TM) before the concept existed.
Something I noticed when watched this reaction (and I've watched several others and I've seen the movie in full too) that I never noticed before was that the illusion watch has both a record and scan feature. When used on the warden, it records his voice them scans him, which is why Megamind sounds like him when using the watch to escape. I also assume that he preprogrammed it with himself and had Metro Man help him record his voice and appearance for the fight. Why do I bring all of this up? Because the writers are genius and made it so Ferrell could voice Megamind as Bernard, despite Bernard having a different voice actor. When Megamind runs into Bernard, he hurriedly scans him but doesn't record his voice (he has no time). Therefore, he keeps his voice and relies on the altered appearance to keep the secret. It's low key brilliant, and prevents a plot hole so small that they could've done nothing, but chose instead to use this detail. 👏👏👏
I knew Megamind was pretending to be Metroman by the way the bus was split. 27:40 The bus was split straight clean. If it was a punch it would have crumpled not split in half. And the effect was it being sawed If you check without his disguise Megamind had a buzzsaw in his fist
This movie was one of my favorites as a kid, and one I still love today. The message that it has about appearance doesn't matter, just your actions and intentions determine who you are. No one is born with anger or hate, that comes with how you were raised or who taught you what was right or wrong. Also that there's a difference between being a nice guy and a good one; Something that defiantly has become more prevalent now more than ever. Forever I'm disappointed that this film was seen as a knockoff of Despicable Me and that it was ignored. Thankfully nowadays people recognise it for the masterpiece it really is. Wish I lived in the timeline where this film was a successful franchise instead of unfunny Minions bullshit.
I'm surprised it never got a sequel. Seemed like a perfect series to continue, though I suppose it didn't crush the box office (did ok, but not enough to warrant a sequel I suppose). Apparently they're doing some series on Peacock that will serve as one, but no clue when it's supposed to come out.
Pretty sure the reason it didn’t kill it at the box office and why it didn’t get a sequel was because it came out around the same time despicable me did, both movies were similar and despicable me was clearly more popular so they decided not to continue megamind so as to not fight with the juggernaut that despicable me and the minions have become, megamind was a great movie, it just got overshadowed
For those who don't know, the film will have a continuation in the format of an animated series. Megamind's Guide To Defending Your City will be the name of the series. I hope Blind Wave reacts to the series when it comes out.
Cool little detail, if u go back and watch the observatory scene, you can actually see Metroman blink in and out, I know u see it when he's in the real observatory, but I wanna say u can also catch a glimpse of him in the room with the 3 of them too
Anyone else ever realised that Hal Stuart's name is just a mash of the 2 Green Lanterns.... *Hal* Jordon & John *Stuart.* You can tell it's apparent throughout this movie in general that the writers we're huge DC fans, especially Superman, hence why so many elements are practically based around his world of Metropolis, with a small pinch of Batman in there to.
I love this movie, it's so good. The only thing I miss is a short conversation between Megamind and Roxanne where Megamind apologise for deceiving her and they talk it out. With that this movie would be near perfection.
I loved this movie so much as a kid that I have distinct memories of re-enacting Megamind’s monologues in front of my relatives at family gatherings. This movie and Ratatouille are probably my favourite animated films ever.
One cool detail is in Roxanne's clothing where she starts out wearing red which compliments Metroman's gold, then midway through the film during her date she's wearing purple which is a mix of red and blue, which is the colour she eventually wears at the end of the film that matches Megamind. It's a great visual example of her switching sides from Metro to Mega's. Don't know if it was on purpose by the filmmakers, but it's pretty clever.
I can't believe I never noticed this, but I just realized Tighten's real name is a combination of the two most popular Green Lanterns names. Hal Jordan and John Stewart
Hal was such a subversive villain for a kid's movie of that time. He was the perfect portrayal of an incel before incels were even a thing. I think it did a lot of good to show young children that just because you're nerdy and awkward, doesn't make you immune from being a bad person, which was a revolutionary idea considering that most movies and shows of the previous few decades showed nerdy socially awkward heroes get the girl from their (usually evil) muscular chad boyfriends.
Schaffrillas Productions made a great review on this film and made me realize some thing i didn't even catch as a kid. This is trully one of the best Dreamworks animation movies, and definitely a pretty good deconstruccion on the Superhero tropes!
It really was looked over. I'm trying to remember if I saw it in the theater or on cable for the first time. I'm thinking I saw it on cable and then fell in love with it. I feel it deserves so much more recognition now.
This movie asks an interesting question to - what happens if evil wins? But we won't follow the hero who lost, we'll follow the bad guy who won, does he have any meaning in life now? This is one of Dreamworks' masterpieces I recommend you to watch more animated films that you haven't seen, it's really fun!
Calvin is the only one who can see metroman looks like Markiplier, the people in their movie reaction channels don’t say anything that Metroman looks like Markiplier after all
Yes I do have random analysis for this movie for no reason I’m copying. (Just roll with it.) Here’s the best way to look at Megamind, Metro Man and their effect on the world around them. They aren’t heroes OR villains. They are taking part in a school play and were assigned their roles. And they took both roles into being professional actors. It’s ALWAYS about the show, the presentation. Megamind’s methods never hurt anyone. It’s clear from how Roxanne treats his early threats. He wanted her to play her part, but like a show, it just LOOKS like she’s in danger. It’s all property damage, trolling…terrorism. But no one dies in this method. (You can’t possibly tell me he pronounces all those words wrong genuinely, and he just enjoys ticking people off by trolling them) He realizes he wants the other role, but he’s ASSIGNED his role, he can’t be another role unless he’s someone else. So he plays the director. And he made the WRONG cast choice but was too proud to choose someone else. He wants to escape not the show, but the tropes. He acts slightly entitled for Roxanne, but he is more saying I’m not ALLOWED to have these things because I’m the bad guy. You won’t LET me change. Metro Man straight up didn’t want this show anymore. He wanted another show. And one HE has to earn. Hence why he chose music. No physical training he always has done, no super power helping him do it, he has to actively learn how to play. And currently he’s awful and has to learn. Which is what he wants. Minion is more the backstage manager handling the costumes and helping the theatrics hit the perfect adrenaline. (Intentionally making those RIDICULOUS warm up times.) And when Megamind says he doesn’t want the role, Minion basically is saying the show may as well be canceled. Which it more or less was since all the cracks of the show WITHOUT Minion fell apart. Hal, was never in the show. He’s the camera guy. He WATCHES the show. He never played the role. He could only take what he assumed happened from watching. Metro Man got Roxanne because he saved her. Metro Man would never have died if he just put down Megamind. (There are MILLIONS of viewers that say that the hero should just kill the villain.) Not only was that untrue, but Hal never even fit in the roles in the first place. And showed exactly why someone LIKE Hal can’t have those powers. Because it’s not the power, it’s their control. And he has NONE. Because he never caught on this was a performance. He could act as he pleased because he wasn’t a character in the show. Roxanne realized as time went on how these guys saw their role and she decided to snap these people out with REALITY and not playing into their show. And it just kept getting her stuck in various versions until Hal was powerless, and she understood Megamind really was just as human as the rest of them.
He definitely genuinely mispronounces the words. He never got an actual education, so all the words he mispronounces are because he never actually hears them, he only reads them. It's common among people who didn't get a formal education.
This film is tons of fun and criminally underrated 😎. That's a good point maybe Roxanne should have gotten the powers particularly at the end to help save the day and subvert the damsel trope a bit more.
It would have made for an anticlimactic ending. Roxanne would have just quickly and efficiently taken down Megamind (and Minion) without any of the dumb dramatics and monologs. Then taken over for Metroman. "You're the smartest person I know." From Megamind, the guy who can design and build dehydration rays, satellite solar powered death rays and a genetic manipulation gun. Problems solved. End of movie.
Marlon Brando played Jor-El in the 1979 Christopher Reeves "Superman". The flying around scene is a reference to the flying date in the 1979 "Superman"
Titan was the hero in Megaminds head, while Tighten was the villain Hal became… Also Metroman was honestly only a hero to be praised, you saw his speed he shouldn’t have struggled to beat megaminds plans it was just his hero complex.
They took the villain and hero formula and did something different with it. Like instead of Metro Man being secretly evil he just became bored and tired of doing the same thing for years.
my favourite detail in this film is when Megamind is on the screens taunting Metroman at the beginning of the film, there is a 1 frame flicker where you can see Metroman appear on the screen behind Megamind.

One of the best superhero subversion movies where it actually embraces the thing rather than fight it back pretending as if it's "too mature" for it
Honestly, yeah.
Which i really like the jokes and satire.

a lot of productions keep doing the "what if superman was evil" trope, but almost no one bothers doing "what if lex luthor was good"
Fun detail about Megamind's disguise watch, it changes everything but the eye color. If you look real close Megamind's eye color never changes regardless of what disguise he's wearing.

Fun Fact: Even though his role was brief, the Boss of the Prison was voiced by J.K Simmons! In case you guys hadn't seen his name in the credits!

Fun fact: the movie's subtitles actually go back and forth between Titan and Tighten
One of the best animated movies of all time! There was a point in time Dreamworks produced nothing but masterpieces. The recent Puss in boots movies gives me hope that they will make a comeback.
Dreamworks are GOATed
The “watch the neck!” Every time that they hold a baby in the movie 🤣🤣 such a dad
So Megamind was originally written with Ben Stiller in mind. He couldn't do it because of scheduling conflicts, so he was given the role of Bernard.
As for Tighten's name change, it was a low key way for the writers to show the corruption of Hal. When originally donned a super "hero", he was Titan, however, as he becomes evil, he transforms into "Tighten."
The Guns N Roses confrontation is made even better when you realize Minion went all out for the "presentation," essentially that's what Minion thinks a supervillain *should* be.
This movie is so dense full of fun things that it's a real shame Minions overshadowed this movie with only a few months separation. A Megamind 2 would have been awesome, but less is more, I suppose.
“Oh, you’re a villain alright… just not a super one.”
Hal: What's the difference
Megamind: Presentation!
That's my favorite scene
Hal was powerless, that's the reason he SEEMED harmless. Then he got the power to do what he'd always imagined. Hal was the Nice Guy(TM) before the concept existed.
I like the idea that Megamind always had a thing for Roxanne and that's why he kept kidnapping her
Something I noticed when watched this reaction (and I've watched several others and I've seen the movie in full too) that I never noticed before was that the illusion watch has both a record and scan feature.
And the effect was it being sawed
If you check without his disguise Megamind had a buzzsaw in his fist
metroman has laser sight...

YES!!!!! This movie is so underrated.
The Titan/Tighten thing is symbolic of his heel turn. Titan is the hero name, Tighten is the villain name.
Megamind deserves a sequel
Agreed
It should be a satire on Multiverse films the same way this was a satire on the basic hero formula

Glad you watched this! One detail they have in the film is even when Megamind changes his outward appearance, his eye color is usually the same.

Brad Pitt as Metro-Man is so damn good and so underrated. His song line that he can see through led always has me rolling

I really love that they didn’t just do “the hero was actually the villain all along!” Thing like they easily could have.
I love this movie, it's so good. The only thing I miss is a short conversation between Megamind and Roxanne where Megamind apologise for deceiving her and they talk it out. With that this movie would be near perfection.
Yknow, when they wrote that Queen of England quip into the script, I think someone should have realized that joke was a ticking time bomb
He even wore green!
This is a real fun movie. I think this is one of those movies that doesn't need a sequel of any kind.
Arguably the most tonally well rounded animated movie of Dreamworks
Hal was such a subversive villain for a kid's movie of that time. He was the perfect portrayal of an incel before incels were even a thing. I think it did a lot of good to show young children that just because you're nerdy and awkward, doesn't make you immune from being a bad person, which was a revolutionary idea considering that most movies and shows of the previous few decades showed nerdy socially awkward heroes get the girl from their (usually evil) muscular chad boyfriends.
10:05 Calvin really is good at doing impressions.

My favorite line in this is always when Titan is beating up Megamind and goes: "And this one's for Space Mom. You LIED to her!"
This movie asks an interesting question to - what happens if evil wins? But we won't follow the hero who lost, we'll follow the bad guy who won, does he have any meaning in life now?
This is one of Dreamworks' masterpieces
I recommend you to watch more animated films that you haven't seen, it's really fun!

(You can’t possibly tell me he pronounces all those words wrong genuinely, and he just enjoys ticking people off by trolling them)
He realizes he wants the other role, but he’s ASSIGNED his role, he can’t be another role unless he’s someone else.
“There is no Queen of England” Damn that hits hard 😔
"He looks like Markiplier."
HE DOES. HOW DID I NOT SEE IT THEY'RE PRACTICALLY IDENTICAL.
Marlon Brando played Jor-El in the 1979 Christopher Reeves "Superman".
The flying around scene is a reference to the flying date in the 1979 "Superman"
The Obama-eque poster in the background that says, "No you can't." 😂😂😂
The animation for 2010 was really good! Especially that rain scene when Roxanne leaves him
When you want to rewatch a show or reread something again, just grab the Forget-Me-Stick
Titan was the hero in Megaminds head, while Tighten was the villain Hal became…
Also Metroman was honestly only a hero to be praised, you saw his speed he shouldn’t have struggled to beat megaminds plans it was just his hero complex.
Hal being your typical "why doesn't she like me" Nice Guy™
They took the villain and hero formula and did something different with it. Like instead of Metro Man being secretly evil he just became bored and tired of doing the same thing for years.
The Obama-esque “No You Can’t” banners are my favorite part. It’s such a good simple joke.
my favourite detail in this film is when Megamind is on the screens taunting Metroman at the beginning of the film, there is a 1 frame flicker where you can see Metroman appear on the screen behind Megamind.
I LOVE MEGAMIND it makes me sad that so many people haven’t seen it! Not my favorite movie but definitely in my top ten
