Post Office: chair intervenes after groans as Vennells admits she followed 'grossly improper' advice

- Ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells followed a “grossly improper” suggestion to not review all subpostmaster prosecutions after her communications chief said it would end up “front page news”, the Horizon IT inquiry has heard.
The probe was shown an email exchange between Ms Vennells and then director of communications Mark Davies in July 2013 in which she said she would “take your steer” after he said looking at all past cases would be “in media terms… very high profile”.
Ms Vennells agreed that had the Post Office decided to review all prosecutions of false accounting, it “may well have” avoided the “lost decade” until miscarriages of justice involving subpostmasters were discovered.
The public gallery at the inquiry, made up of mainly subpostmasters, groaned loudly after Ms Vennells said she did not remember if she took the “advice of the PR guy” to review past prosecutions.
After chairman Sir Wyn Williams intervened, Ms Vennells continued: “As I tried to say before, what we were working to at this stage was numbers of cases going through a scheme, and a scheme that was going to be opened up to anybody who wanted to come forward.
“I understand how this reads, but I don’t recall making any conscious decision not to go back and put in place a review of all past criminal cases.”

Everyone knows that she is Lying. Horrible person.
I know her lips are moving
And its happening in most services that affect our lives. From Health Service to Water Industry. There is a problem of excessively over paid top tier management that run a culture of cover up when gross errors occur.
She and quite a few other senior managers MUST be prosecuted for the cover up and their conspiracy to hide evidence revealing miscarriages of justice.
You know very well that they probably wont. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so.
I fear nothing will happen, it’s already a stitch up
She's really dragging her "answers" out with word salads and not really answering anything. Also if my memory was as bad as hers I'd be worried about myself.
Exactly..Hours of corporate word salad,as she's trained and skilled in.
An essential qualification to justify a £700k salary.
Sir Wynn asked her yesterday was she groomed in thinking long before answers. And say few words !!!
All have been coached… go after there legal team.😊
One Massive Cover Up......Prison
THE LYING VICAR
you got the first two words right
YET ANOTHER THE LYING VICAR. Sorted.
Religion ruins lives, you don't have to be evil to believe in a god, but it helps.
@@IanMcKennaLondon Does it ever.
Her rapid blinking is due to Her lies.
This woman could not lie straight in bed.
Urgh that is not something I want to think about 🤢
This excuse for a woman has no shame the lives she has destroyed shocking.
Brilliant. Love watching this. This reflects her approach. Deception, deception ,deception. And yesterday she promised to be honest and open. She needs to be imprisoned
I particularly like the distinct bits where she says I am being truly sincere etc. Jolly good, so what were you being the rest of the time Reverend?
I have so little faith in our systems that I don't believe any of these people will face prosecution for their actions. They will suffer the brief embarrassment of this inquiry and then return to their cosseted lives
Bingo. Ding ding ding ding... We have a winner!
Sadly they will never suffer anywhere near as badly as their victims.
With all the money from there fat salaries and bonuses for failure.
Am sure Paula is treated as a pariah by most people these days. She’s toxic
I suspect she has been coached as to how to answer Mr Beer. But he is having none of it. It is Insightful to witness how a top KC goes about his job. She really is not coming out of this at all well.
I suspect, and it gives me no pleasure to say this, but these three days will have ruined the rest of her life. Welcome to the world of the sub postmasters you persecuted Paula Vennells. Although unfortunately, I dont think you will see the inside of a prison cell though. More's the pity.
Totally agree. The Establishment looks after its own.
@@markwatts4750 I have been thinking about this. "The crowd are seething unified anger, not something one see very often in the Uk, The crowd want a crucifixion. I think Vennells could be the one so that the powers that be can say "look, we are on your side" I am not overly convinced, by my own reasoning, but, there is going to be a police investigation. Fingers crossed.
How did she get to the top of the company because obviously she has been promoted way beyond her capabilities and it cost lives
She’s actually very good at her job. Which is to walk between the legal raindrops without getting wet. She’ll be toasted for her performance in senior corporate circles.
@@CYCHIATRICshe knows people on high places it's not what you know its who you know she is very clever she just got found out by the brilliant alan bates
It is, or rather, it used to be called "if your face fits".
Laying on Her Back.
she was an excellent CEO- in other words she made big money for the post office and she knows how to lie without guilt. Money- the root of all evil
She said she never took the advice of just one person and two minutes later sees the email where she does exactly that. Still lying, still squirming, still spilling out too many words to run the clock down.
If her first response was about ‘The Media’ why doesn’t it stress the reasons why, the second point is laid out in great detail! If the Post Office was wrong in their beliefs and the Convictions were forced due to lies, surely it falls on the Post Office to investigate and correct its illegal actions, not any outside Agency!
Yeah, like they're going to do that. The reason we're having this enquiry is precisely because they didn't
@@bigkdog5091 thanks for that, didn’t realise we were having the Inquiry for that reason, you must be a University Graduate
She still lying
How can a supposedly woman of God sit there and tell so many lies.
She's relied on hiding behind that cloak of respectability and still is.
She is a vicar for the god Mammon... not for the other god.
Positions of authority and power will always attract psychopaths. And despite screening processes, about 6-10% will slip through. The gaussian (bell) curve strongly implies a standard deviation of 10-80-10 for _every_ biological trait: ten will slip through, while 80% will be blocked and finally ten will also be foiled but only through unusual scrutiny. Ironically, the six percent of Catholic pedo priests was statistically _below_ the "normal" average of ten percent.
Because the god squad don't have the monopoly on being good, believing in god doesn't tell me anything about whether or not that person is a good person.
She is not a woman of God. She doesn't tell the truth. If you listen carefully to her taking the oath thingy, you will notice that what she actually says is:
I promise to tell the truth,
The whole truth,
And nothing like the truth.
I rest my case m'Lord.
Post office and the Anglican Church - a marriage made in heaven 🤯
I am beginning to understand why barristers garner such high fees!
Every time she opens her mouth, she just makes iy worse for herself
She's been doing this for years through the whole thing why would it change now? She has had many opportunities to stop what she was doing and what the PO was doing to innocent people and she chose not to do the right thing. Had she done something she wouldn't be where she is now and she could have got away with saying I wasn't here when Horizon came into the branches but she refused to back down that the PO was wrong she kept defending and obstructing anyone asking questions thats why it took so long the government could have been more firmer in challenging her but they couldn't be bothered
Her “conviction” in this piece is to cover up, it’s as clear as night follows day
Slippery as an eel .
Referring to 'the post office' in the third person!! The correct pronoun is 'I"
Yes it was like she was commenting as an observer rather than the main perpetrator.
Just put her in jail and stop prolonging her misery!
At least I'll remember watching this.
😂
well no one at the enquiry hearing believes her .... after hearing those groans
She seems determined to refer to 'The Board', The Post Office' and 'The Business.' None of these things have consciousness, or make decisions. However, people within them do.
In most cases, these 'people' were actually one person, Paula Vennells.
I was only following orders didn't work at Nuremberg.
And she was the one giving them?!
Lots of Albert Speers.
be honest with yourself and ask : Will anyone face prison for this ? in reality, no one will get prosecuted
In reality who knows? But at the very least they have been exposed to total public humiliation. If it was one of your friends would you keep that friendship going? Plenty of people bailed on the wrongly convicted SPMs.
She will enter a religious retreat, then a mental health facility, then be found "unfit to stand trial".
Isn’t it remarkable how her spoken manner is so different from the tone of her emails? Given the enquiry one might expect her to have refreshed her memory - too many ‘I don’t remember’, etc. etc.
I've been pushing for ten to twenty years in prison. After the last two days, I'm pushing for twenty to thirty years.
Unfortunately this isn't contested in the States....
How do you get into these positions with such poor memories ?
Digging a bigger hole every lying word
She certainly ended up being on the front page … and will end up chip paper once she’s prosecuted
rather than just put her hands up and admit to everything, take responsibility and except justice, she is basically kicking the victims while they are down.
She should have her house and all her money taken off her and given to Jo Hamilton.
She remembers all the things that defend her but none of the things that go against her-let’s see some justice.
She knew exactly what she was doing and blamed others on the day quite successfully
The buck stops ... hey, a squirrel .... over there!
Thank goodness, our shared world is full of really good, honest, moral people, and then we see this highly rehearsed, performance to justify her indefensible, personal actions. Sickening!!!
The problem is that this a Public Inquiry, whereas it should be a trial in the Crown Court with a jury and Vennels should be sent to prison as she indirectly sent many Postal Workers.
In a court her lawyer would advise her to say “no comment” at least in this enquiry she’s squirming in front of the whole nation
How is it indirect? The Post Office is empowered to prosecute and they did.
@@TheArgieH It was the CPS via the courts that issued the summons and Warrants. The P.O. supposedly submitted the evidence.
@@allanthorpe7139 Or I do not recall.
@@anthonymathews3872 I believe not. The Post Office has the power to prosecute. Similar powers exist (or did) regarding the TV licence fee. Others have pointed out already that it is part of the whole tragedy that the CPS was circumvented. The PO's alleged cavalier treatment of evidence and alleged disregard of rules of disclosure would not have got past the CPS. Also the CPS would have recognised pretty quickly that there was more than one SPM having problems or that there was a sudden plague of fraud in SPOs. Furthermore, watch the inquiry sessions and you will see senior PO managers expressing evident surprise that they as the PO had exercised their power and taken the decision to prosecute. If someone knows otherwise they will doubtless say so.
Only a sociopath would do what she did
Saying anything just to save her self she makes my blood boil
Untouchables getting away with murder for years ‘
The way she twists and plainly and deliberately misinterprets the meaning of the documents is just bizarre. Why does she think just because she says that's what she meant to say, everyone is just going to believe that and not their own eyes. It must be incredibly frustrating for the KC and the victims listening to that all day
When is her first court appearance happening?
Another "Christian" - either doing kids in the pooper or covering up something
Not to mention colluding with genocide
@@josephdebri8941 Are you suggesting that sub-postmasters are a distinct ethnicity?

Please adjust the volume on your channel upwards.
Exactly.
Too low.
After all of this i hope no one here thinks there will be the right and proper outcome as in jail time for anyone of these vile people
I now realize that all the excessive coughing was from the Sub Post Officers who were present. Their blimin anguish had to be expressed somehow.
"I can't remember "I can't recall the call" shy hasn't got very good memory has she
The Parliament/government UK needs to bring in laws to protect the consumers and the public, and more broadly, to protect everyone against this type of criminal activities and fraudulent activities by CEOs, board of directors, managers, fraud investigators, law firms, etc. Laws will make these criminals accountable for their actions in the uk and overseas !
Sound is really low
KC Beers is absolutely extraordinary. What a forensic investigator
She's lying through her teeth..... She's sorry now she's got caught.... prison for what she did to those poor post master's , she's got blood on her hands...
Send her straight to jail!
The continued contact with the PR person seems a bit odd - when she says 'reasons that were very personal to him' - what on earth does that mean?
By not revealing evidence in this way surely is perverting the course of justice
A broader conspiracy.
A huge cover up which is what usually happens in the U.K. Also nothing will be done after this enquiry because this is what usually happens in the U.K. too. I feel for the families stress and loss it’s caused.
Let's see what happens with the Grenfell Inquiry first. 72 people died there, someone was responsible and I don't think the public mood will settle for another Hillsborough.
Her hairstyle is a crime in itself.
She is lying through her eye teeth and just won’t see it. How can she live with herself?
Does anyone notice the volume is low?
CofE ➡️ CEO ➡️ CBE
We’ll try sifting through the chaff, why do they swear an oath when it really doesn’t matter, as what we have heard it’ll come down to the people around her didn’t let her know an that will be the case for the defence, five million in the bank account an live happily ever after, an be the next bishop of England no case to answer for or to, they look after their own, needs a private criminal court as was the ceo at the time innocent people were sent to jail, also lives totally ruined, Alan Bates an innocents take them on now, as this will get that much money thrown at it, it will go away, the real people to blame is this management government who own this corrupt company. Words and Lip service Not worth listening to.
Lies Lies Lies , every word she says is lies
It’s painful to watch and hear Paula Vennells
Lying under oath 👹
Jail time.
Only one place this terrible person belongs. In jail for the rest of her life. The need to get this enquiry done and start all the prosecutions
Can you sort the volume level out on these videos, it’s lower than a Post Office director. 👍
Just you... Nothing wrong with the sound at all.
@@philipjohnkaye8890 you sound like the post office _"You're the only one"_
And just like the post office you know it isn't true because you have said the exact same copy and paste answer to others in this very comments section...

Playing ignorant now...😖
When questioned, she remembers immediately the reference to date & subject (up to 13 years ago) & replies, pausing only to choose her answers carefully; except anything she was responsible for, & there she passes the buck or can't remember, every time!
Interesting how that now Vennells is directly in the firing line for ber gross mishandling of the Horizon issues, her memory is distinctly iffy.
So, we're to believe that Vennells got to be head of the Post Office with such a poor memory.
If this was me I would owe up to it .
The idea you can’t have integrity when caught just shows you need jail time 100% percent
When she talks she is lying.
Prison
Hope there is a civil case against her - doubt there will be a criminal trial.
Oh..word salad with no words 😮
Send her to prison
If she comes clean and admits she lied offer her a lower sentence, “ let’s say ten years in prison instead of twenty “ that’s what you offered the post office sub postmasters , admit your a lier and you’ll be spared a long prison sentence.
Delusional memory syndrome.
She should be locked up for a long time
Put her in jail
Maybe what the KC's should do from now on is open the line of questioning with "Do you ever recall, remember or for that matter have any memory whatsoever of working for the POL". At least then that will set the tone for what answers will be provided afterwards.
It amazes me how many people who rise to top jobs, on huge salaries, all seem to be afflicted with the same desease, having the worst possible memories. How do they ever get their positions?
Jail her
Does that judge not understand ventilation when hearing untruths being spoken after being victimised by these very same untruths
What can be done to help those Post Office people who were, more or less, threatened to admit they did do something wrong or they could be punished much worse? Some of those must have pleaded guilty under duress, That should not be held against their aquittal and recompense.
The PR guy was under orders to contact her directly hence the others kept out of the loop. 🤔
She just never tells the truth, and thinks that we all beleive her
Sir wyn stop the enquiry now, hand all reports to police and advise them with your knowledge of the cover up who should be doing jail time. There should not be many missing from your list.
Money talks and all will walk.
Please. Turn up the volume!!! Sound is almost mute. Each video is harder to hear.
She's a priest 😂
They wanted to make her bishop of london. 😬
isn't the volume REALLY low here?I can barely hear the audio..
Her actions andattitude at the enquiry prove she was not a suitable candidate for the senior position within the Post Office So who in the goverment and in their right mind appointed her?
Such a sad situation for all concerned but none should lose out no matter who was at fault. Give back to the people what belongs to the people.
She’s not a very good liar
Imagine, at your place of work, some money goes missing. You get blamed. If you deny it you are threatened with court resulting in prison. Or if you admit it you just get a suspended sentence or community punishment. So to avoid prison you admit guilt. Over and done with you think. Then your company sues you for court costs because you were found guilty, you owe £350,000 in court costs. Your life ruined. This company is called the Post Office. Their logo is " whatever you need us for, we're here for you". They spent £100 million in expensive lawers to try to avoid paying £58 million in compensation. The class action saw the incorrectly convicted see £20,000 in compensation after court costs. The executive salaries were between £250,000 and £500,000
What a totally lovely lady 😢
The inquiry chair should refer Vennells’ replies to the CPS who should conduct a review of her responses, with a view to establishing whether Vennells has lied under oath and committed perjury.
