Imagine how the post office worker who was pregnant and had her child in prison cried. And imagine how much her children cried when their mother was taken and their father understandably broke down and became alcohol dependent as they experienced hostility from their community; the loss of their family, reputation and livelihood. No sympathy for Miss Vennels.

@@andyMSH700 If they were in a position to know or should have asked or should have disclosed evidence I agree 1000%. However, if it was a solicitor who was told the system was secure and had a witness for Fujitsu who said the system was secure and had an investigator say the postmaster confessed (where in reality they were bullied into it) I don't know how much blame I can put on them. If they've got no other knowledge of horizon, what could they have done to find out the truth. As for the solicitors who knew horizon had bugs and concealed it while insisting it was for the benefit of the defence, those people have a special place in hell waiting for them.

I accept full responsibility for the failings on my watch, and the consequences of those failings." are the words we need to hear and never will.

What I found working within large organisations, is a kind of conspiracy of silence around their mutual incompetence, at high levels. Their instinct is to cover each other's arses; such that you don't see more of their monkey arses as they climb the tree. I must add, that this isn't about DEI (it's much older), they all do the same dance, regardless of background, once they are 'in'. Integrity is seen as foolish by them.

Best comment I've read so far. This is business as usual for our elites. UK, Australia, France, Canada, USA - you name it. The people at the top can destroy the the plebs wile they stripmine wealth all they want - it's been going on for generations. The difference is, in the era of recording devices, social media and mass communications, the little people can get informed real quick, see what is going on and ORGANIZE. The miniseries that has ignited public outrage and anger about this particular scandal is a good example of that.
The Post Office Scandal is one of literally dozens and dozens of similar heartless, selfish crimes perpetrated by the managerial class with absolute impunity. Their rapacity and greed know no limit and will never stop - until it is stopped. Working people in the West (for the first time in history) can see what is going on without the distorted lens of corporate media controlling the story, and with the ability the organize and take action directly, without needing unions or corruptible "bosses" to organize for them. Look at the Truckers in Canada and the wonderful Farmers across Europe. Our lords and masters don't know HOW to deal with that, so the overreact and fumble.
If the elites trashing our fellow citizens and institutions for personal gain and power had any sense at all, they'd realize just how exposed they are. Tsars and Kings with absolute power have been overthrown by peasants - don't forget that. A bunch of dithering, selfish bureaucrats and management types will crumble overnight when faced with serious for real opposition.

I remember when I started in my job forty years ago. On advice of a mentor, I quickly established myself in a side role, which took me into the training side of the company rather than management. That meant attending a lot of management meetings over the last 30 years and that means getting to see managers in a true light. They will openly lie to protect themselves from taking the blame for anything that doesn't go right or to claim the credit for anything that does. Duplicity and doing whatever it takes at the expense of whomever it takes is the order of the day. An honest and genuine manager is like an honest politician. Their honesty will only be used against them as a weapon by other managers to undermine them. I tell all my trainees that if a manager ever asks them to do something that is against process or off the books, they should always get it in writing first. It's amazing how many times managers tell staff to do things and if the staff member asks for it in an email to confirm it, the manager goes and asks someone else to do it instead. Then, if there's any blowback, they completely thrown that person under the bus and claim they misunderstood what they were instructed to do. In short, I wouldn't trust a manager as far as they could spit.

She was never qualified for the job.
She never understood enough about the complexity of the job, or the technicalities of the job.
She never got a grip of her subordinates, and they in turn ended up capturing her.
The most basic, instinctive mindset of bureaucrats is that once something starts to go wrong, you just hunker down harder and hope it will all go away.
And certainly the PO was an ossified relic, overstaffed by exactly the wrong type of people.
When change and new thinking was required, it was both missing, and resisted.
The job of a CEO coming into an organisation undergoing a radical reform program is to drive that change hard.
Vennells wanted to be liked, and lead a happy team - whereas the actual requirement was for a bastard who remove people from their comfort zones, and their jobs if necessary.
Vennells patently wasn't capable of evaluating her senior staff critically, or have the spine and mongrel to deal to them effectively.
At which point, serious inquiry must be given to who appointed Vennells, and why - because that was a serious primary failure right there.
Who thought Vennells was the right person for this job ???
Will 'they' ever get the spotlight shone on them ?
The fish rots from the head.

I worked as a consultant in IT at the PO many, many years ago - well before Horizon came along, I’ll add. But the managers and team leaders I worked for were like bulldogs in ensuring their systems were suppirted and maintained to a very high standard. I had total respect for them. What on earth went wrong?

Did you know Norman McKay? My uncle who worked for the PO in the 50s 60s and 70s and 80s. I believe he was fairly high up there. He is passed now but wouldn't have allowed this to happen as he had such integrity.

It would have been AWFUL to have 30,000 post office branches; countless postmasters' lives ruined and those of their families

Women trying to manipulate situations by crying when they've been caught doing something wrong is pathetic and needs to stop. She is not the victim and has absolutely no right to act as if she is.
