    Hi, thanks for the very helpful video. ❤
    I have a question: I planted my hyacinths last winter for the first time.
    They bloomed and after they dried I took them out from the earth and kept them in the garage to dry.
    Now it is summer and very hot (30.⁰ to 35.⁰ C).
    My question is: should I keep the bulbs wrapped in newspaper or, as someone suggested, put them in a clay pot, inside earth, without watering, until it's time to put them back in the garden next winter?
    Thank you very much 🎉

      Hi Teresa, to make a very long story short, you can do both! I've tried both leaving the dormant bulbs potted in soil over summer and lifting/storing in a cool, airy place and both have worked for me. The important factors are the temps, that the bulbs won't overheat. It is also worth noting that when you lift your bulbs you get to do a health inspection and can recycle any diseased bulbs, making space for new ones in the autumn. You can also start collecting the daughter bulbs and pot them up if that's something you have the patience and space for. Hope that helps! 🙏🏻🤗

      Hi Neil, mould is a big one for bulbs so anything mouldy-looking isn't a good sign. As for pests, there are many 😬 aphids, slugs, bulb mites and borers. Dem bulbs are tasty 😋

    What if you're keeping the pot inside? How much light and what temperature will they thrive in? After the bloom dies,,, what then? Thanks!

      Hi John, I have two further videos on hyacinth care, one for caring for them as they grow in pots inside and outside and the other is aftercare. You can find them in the growing spring bulbs playlist 🙂

      Thank you and welcome 🙏 😊 that's a good question I'm not actually entirely sure why! I would assume it has to do with getting a better display in pots, the more bulbs you have they better the pot will look. The bulbs probably prefer to have a bit more space between them but they can handle it. Good question though 🤔

      @balconiagarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jagdish, you could pack quite a few hyacinths in with a 30cm diameter pot, just same sure the bulbs aren't touching the sides or each other. Maybe around 20? If you have such a large pot I recommend layering your bulbs and combining different types into one pot for a really special spring display 😀

    Thanks for the video. I planted my first set of Hyacinth bubs last year fall, I believe they are starting to emerge - I can see some green leaves coming up. But I have a question - do they rebloom throughout the Spring, or do they bloom once and that's it for the season?

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, the green leaves are a good sign 👌 mine are also starting to emerge. Hyacinths bloom once a season but will normally put out 2 to 3 flower spikes consecutively so the actual flowering period can be up to 8 weeks long 🙂

    I live in Canada, winter for me gets down to around -15.
    I was thinking of potting some up and keeping it in my uninsulated garage...think they'll survive that?
    Better than having terra cotta sit in snow for a couple of months... learned the hard way that they'll explode.
    Should I start them now for spring flowers?
    I have grow lights.

      Hi Shelley, thanks for your message. I think they should be fine in your garage providing the temps don't go below freezing and it's a good alternative to snow and exploding pots! 😂 I'd start planting when the weather starts to cool maybe around 10°C because if you plant when the temps are still warm the bulbs will already to start to grow. You can also plant different pots consecutively so you have a constant supply of emerging hyacinths. Bulbs won't react to grow lights even if you plant them on the top of the soil but if you do want them to flower quicker you can "force" them by planting them and bringing them into your home where the temps are warmer. Hope that helps!

    Is it good to plant outside in the earths soil?

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Eric, yes it's fine to plant in the open soil 🙂 growing in pots has it's advantages such as being able to control the conditions more eg choosing the soil you want to use, position of pots, and control of possible pests and diseases. It also has it's challenges, especially when it comes to watering and insulating the pots as the bulbs are less protected from the elements above the soil level and are more prone to drying out. Bulbs grow perfectly well in the open soil and in mixed beds. I would give it a try!

    @balconiagarden, Hi! Thanks for the helpful video. I'd like some of the hyacinths to start already blooming during christmas and new year's time. So should I plant them now (bulbs might take 4-10 weeks to grow roots and shoots). And in such case, should I allow the upper part of the bulb to stay on top of the soil? I plan to grow them in terracotta pots as well. Some advices will be really appreciated! ^_^Thanks!!

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nazia, thanks for your comment. Hyacinths can take up to 12-13 weeks to grow depending on the variety and temps of your home and/or climate so you can plant them in September for Christmas display. I would plant 3 batches around 10 days apart so if some grow too quickly then you still have fresh hyacinths for the holiday season. With this bulbs I would plant them at 10 to 15cm in the soil. Just be aware that once you plant the bulbs they start growing so if the temperatures are warm they will grow quicker. If you can make sure the hyacinths experience temps of at least around 7°C which will help with flower development.
      You can alternatively buy "forced" or temperature-treated bulbs that normally take around 3 weeks to grow once planted. I would plant those half submerged on the soil surface. Good luck!

      @@balconiagarden Thanks a lot! I don't think here in Finland we could buy temperature treated bulbs to grow them quicker. Its February here in San Jose, California. I ordered hyacinth bulbs from Amazon. Do I need to chill them for a few weeks in my fridge first before I plant them?? They dont look purple like the many I’ve seen in videos. Mines are a very light brown color. Please advise. Thank you!

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Samuel, I think you've left it too late this year to have a good display as hyacinths needs around 12 weeks chilling time to properly flower in spring. If you still want to give it a go I would chill the bulbs in your fridge for at least 3 weeks then plant them out . They should flower but maybe not to the extent they would if the chilling period was longer. In terms of the light brown colour, it may be due to their variety? As long as the bulbs are firm to the touch and have no signs of pests and diseases like mold they should be fine. Hope that helps 😊

      Hey Linda, I've never heard of starting bulbs in water then planting them out 😳 the soil needs to be free draining as bulbs don't like soggy conditions and as peat is moisture retentive this has probably led to the bulb rotting 😰 I did a care video on hyacinths which explains all you need to know to grow healthy hyacinths so that could help you. Hi! I planted 5-6 pots with hyacinths, and several had some tulips in the pot, for a "bulb lasagne". About 6 weeks in, the hyacinths have started to sprout. Is there any way to slow down the sprouting? I feel like they have not had enough time to overwinter in the pots. Thanks you.

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Susan, that's a good question, you can only slow down the growth by reducing the temperature and light but of course that will affect the other bulbs too. In short, you can't target just one bulb when they're planted in a bulb lasagne. Opinions differ of what a bulb lasagne should be and it really comes down to preference - whether the bulbs all emerge at the same time or if they emerge in succession so you have a constant flow of new flowers. Both are sure to give you a beautiful and interesting display, if next year you are really keen on having all the bulbs emerging simultaneously choose bulbs that require the same amount of time in the cold before they flower and you'll have a better chance of a full display. Good luck!

    • @balconiagarden

      Hi Maya,I would just enjoy the show as disturbing the roots might affect the blooming. You can also plant bulbs half submerged into soil and they grow perfectly well too. I've got a video about hyacinth aftercare that tells you all about what you can do after flowering. I would just mention that it sounds like the hyacinths you bought were forced so if you wan to keep the bulbs there's a high chance they won't flower in the next season as forcing is exhausting to the bulbs. Good luck :)

    I just bought a hyacinth at Walmart. It is in a glass vase and the instructions just said to keep it in 75% water and to turn it every few days so it doesn't grow crooked toward the sun. Can I leave it in the vase or do I have to pot it with soil? I had a bad experience with soil recently with gnats and I dread having to pot anything else lol.

    Why my hyacinth plant won't flower

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Yolanda, could be a number or reasons. The bulbs may have mould or root rot or other diseases. They may not have had a cold period of a few months before they were planted which means they won't flower this season. Do they have the right amount of water? The soil should be moist but not saturated. They also like sun so put them in a sunny position if grown in pots 🌞

    My mother-in-law gave me one that she had soaking in water and it started to sprout in the water. Can I still plant it toward the bottom and have it continue to grow with its current growth? Thank you

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bob, in theory yes providing the bulb is healthy and was allowed to retank it's energy after flowering. Growing bulbs in water is very energy-intensive for the bulbs and most of the time they don't recover afterwards so people tend to recycle them. If you want to keep your bulb, I have a hyacinth aftercare video you could watch. Just be aware that with preplanted/prepared bulbs (ie not in loose in bulb bags) they may take a season or two to flower again because they go through a treatment process to make them flower at a certain time, which can be quite stressful for them. You also can't plant bulbs that were grown in water back into water again. Good luck!
