  • Here's how to force Hyacinths in both water and soil. Forcing hyacinths indoors in either water or soil is a wonderful way to bring a bit of spring into the home. Forcing is a technique that allows us to brings plants into bloom before they would normally bloom out in the garden.
To force hyacinths start by pre -chilling your bulbs for 13 weeks. The crisper drawer of the refrigerator is an ideal place to chill your bulbs. Be sure not to have any fruit in the drawer because the ethylene gas that they omit with damage the embryotic flowers in the bulbs.
After the 13 weeks is up remove the bulbs and plant them in soil or water. For water, use a water tight vessel. Place pebbles at the bottom of the vessel, place your bulbs on the pebbles, surround the bulbs with more pebbles and then add water to the point where it is just barely touching the base of the bulb.
For soil, plant the bulbs in a pot with drainage holes. Add moistened potting soil, place your bulbs, and cover with approximately an inch of soil. Water.
For both methods, place the bulbs in a cool spot that receives indirect light. When the buds begin to show color, move them to a sunny location. Turn the planter every day or so to encourage upright growth.

Great advice, especially your emphasis on the need to go from fridge to cool and indirect light before passing to sunny location. I love your porcelain bowl!

Very helpful! Thank you! 🌼 🌺 (Although I disagree that bulbs grown in water should be composted. They can be planted outside or into a pot and will bloom again, either that year or the next, depending upon how soon you transplant them.)

I'm wondering if you can help with the bulb problem I
MAY BE having after this arctic blast is done melting all the snow, and ice, we just had dumped on us?
I'm sure there are going to be others who live in the South like I do, who will be wondering this same question...
However, since you live with snow every year, you may have never had this same issue...
Ok! I'll get to the point-
      I live in zone 7b/8a.
I'm sure we can put me in zone 7b, or maybe even 7a for this issue!!
      It's my Daffodil bulbs.
I usually have them in the ground, but I now have some in a pot. Two years ago they were transferred to the pot, where they have had zero problems, and bloom beautifully.
Here in Central Texas, it's normal for my Daff's to spring their leaves early, even when planted in the ground.
They usually start popping up around November. But they never flower until their normal time in early March. They are just smart that way!
Sometimes we get a sleet storm which brings ice.
I rarely even cover them bcuz any ice that's on them, normally melts the next day.
      And they are always fine.
      Well...
THIS YEAR is going to be a different story...
As we all know, this year the arctic freeze that has covered most of our country,
      has lasted 6 days.
The first storm we got was a heavy ice storm which completely encased my Daffodil leaves. I was hoping that ice would act as a blanket to insulate those leaves, and not cause any, or at least not cause MUCH damage...
But it looks like that was
      just wishful thinking.
All the snow, and ice has just today, started to melt.
Today we are back up to having a more normal temperature of 60° during the day! Yippeeeee!!!
I WAS happy until I got a good look at my Daffodils...
      The leaves are basically mush.
None of them are holding their own. They're all sad, and drooping over the sides of the pot. Their color is dark too.
      They are gonners for sure!
So - assuming the bulb is still ok, I'm wondering if there is any chance of a flower this year?
Or is the more likely story going to be that we'll just be getting new leaves this year?
I'm just thinking the bulb may not have enough energy left in it, to produce both leaves,
      AND a flower.
Or maybe it will go into "survival of the species mode" and simply send up a flower as it tries to create a seed?
      I dunno...
      I'm just guessing.
Have you ever had this kind of situation before?
With any type of bulb pushing leaves up early, then going thru a heavy, long lasting freeze?
Or maybe the bulbs in your area are smarter by simply waiting until Winter has mostly passed by, and then they push their leaves up?
      I just thought I would ask. ❤

Hi Danielle, once again profound knowledge paired with very helpful tips and advices. I love these flowers a lot, but I´m highly allergic, get itchy and running eyes, a swollen tongue and a splitting headache when I have them indoors. But I planted them outside, under a Magnolia stellata, the bloom at the same time and the pink and purple flowers look stunning under the white Magnolia.
Ice on top of snow sounds not sooo funny, but let´s hope for higher temperatures! Take care, Hanni.

Now I know why my leaves flopped over and were so weak looking. It did bloom, but not as pretty as yours! I dug mine up from outside on a warmer winter day when they just started showing. They were somewhere where I needed to move them anyway.

I bought one forced in a vase with water.I let it run its course i took the bulb and took all the old roots off stuck it in some soil in a pot in my garage and it has lots of very health roots and a little green bud on top now.I did not follow the recommended care instructions do you think i will have any luck with it flowering?

Thank you Danielle. I've wanted to do this for a long time. After watching this, I am definitely going to do it. Are there any varieties or types of hyacinths that are better for forcing than others?

Hi Kathy! My understanding is that Dutch hyacinths are best for forcing.

I have one that was growing in water… I let it dry up thinkjng it was an annual, out the vase in a back dark room. 2 years later I get it out and there is a green bud on it…. Should I put it in refrigerator or just plant it?

It’s March now can I do the same process and plant them in pots of soil? How long do the bulbs last if they are not planted? If I can’t planted them in 13 weeks from now, how do I store them until it’s okay?

Mine have bloomed early two years in a row . Then the late frosts destroy them . Can I dig them up and do this ? They seem to hate my property. Lots of all day sun beating down on everything. Is there a faster way to just get em to rebloom ? Thank you 😊. I’m in zone 7 by the way . Tennessee.

Hi Danielle, when you mention one waits until the bulb colours up before moving it to a sunny location do you mean when the flower starts to show? I just quickly removed my planted hyacinths that I purchased in the grocery store to a shady part of my room. I had originally placed it near my southern window for sunshine but I guess I should wait. The flower buds are out but have not opened.

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Eileen! Ideally, we should have them in a cool place with indirect light until the flower buds begin to show color so that they will have nice strong root growth and are able to support the flowers. When the flower buds start to show color that's a good time to move them to a sunny window. But don't worry too much about it! If you've ever seen hyacinths that appear weak/lanky/thin/falling over it's most likely because they went right from a pre-chilled bulb to a warm and sunny location immediately.
