I bought mine in a glass jar as flowering last year. After the flower dried I still kept the bulb in the jar whole year without water. This year it came back without water or anything. I added water after I saw it had green coming, and now it is flowering. I can't believe it just came on its own while i thought it was dead!
Great video! Hyacinth has a special place in Persian culture. It is one of the seven items that we put on our new year table spread. It is called Sonbol in Farsi and is symbolic for renewal as Iranian new year starts on first day of spring.
Thanks for sharing! Hyacinth have a special place in my heart because of how common they were in my childhood and all the memories I have associated with their smell. It's so awesome to hear that they mean something to others!

Beautiful view out the doors there 🌳 I definitely need to give flowers a real go. 🌷 I've been so obsessed with growing veg and lots of it! Hyacinths are so lovely too. Thanks for this!
You totally should! If you don't grow many flowers, these are a perfect way to get into it because they're almost guaranteed to be successful for you! And then you can reuse the bulbs in the garden next year (win win!) ☺️

Nice explanation of growing these bulbs. I have to confess to having some in the garden which I have never even thought about. Learned a lot today, thanks :)
Thanks Eli! ☺️ I always think the ones in the garden look lovely - smaller and a little bit more natural... that's where all these bulbs will be going when I'm finished with them, into the garden!
Awesome! Thank you for such a nice message! I definitely try to pack the videos full of value (and I'm a bit of a fan of a good timestamp myself! 😂). The channel's still small, so if you were up for sharing it and getting the word out, that would be amazing! 😃 Thanks again!
What I love about your videos are they are informative and I love the DIYs you throw in. Good job. There is a store here in town called Aldis where they sell these when the time is right and I purchased two last year but I think I will check at the nursery because they will, or should be, familiar with “prepared” bulbs. Thanks for sharing!!!!
I’m growing some for the first in compost. They’re beginning to open up now, slowly but surely, a deep purple color. I searched for hyacinth care and your awesome video popped up. This is how I initially found your great channel. 👍🏽 You make me laugh when you mention about cutting “the grass” around your home. 🤣 Hopefully, the two of you, will eventually invest in a mower that you can drive.
Nice Input mine outside in the soil and in planters but I also got the idea from you to put them in water and pebbles. I have several glass containers that are perfect for it. Thank you!

It's funny, I was actually looking at hyacinth at my local garden centre last week... We used to grow as a school project when I was very small(long time ago!)... Weather is not great, while my bagel dough is getting proofed, I might pop down to grab a few bulbs...

Hi Niall, awesome video. I got some of these bulbs in deep purple color, already flowered. I am in Toronto, Canada. Please guide me how to store them in this month of June/2021. I will be planting them in my garden this fall. Also if I want to plant some, inside in pots, as you showed so nicely in your video. Which month I should do this way. Thank you
You can lift the bulbs with the green leaves still on them, then plant them outside and they'll do just perfect! If you're wanting to plant the indoor ones, generally garden centres start selling them in September so anytime in Autumn will work well 👍
Thanks for the reply. I have already taken their leaves out which were already wilted. Now I just have bulbs lying in newspaper in my garage. How and where should I store them until September so that I don't lose them
Hello, question here if that’s ok… the one planted in soil.. after storing in the basement and seeing new growth, u mentioned to bring them indoor. Will it need to be watered? How often?
Hi! Yeah it will need to be watered and I would advise just the same as any indoor plant - keep the soil nicely moist, but not wet 👍 How often will depend on the temperature of your house, so I would just check the compost by sticking your finger into it
Hi I want to know if you should leave the bulbs in the pot after they are done flowering ,to flower again next season , or take out the bulbs and freeze them for next season?
I'd probably be inclined to lift them out and replant them next season out in the garden because generally the flowers will be very small in subsequent years
Hi, I just found you and love this video and I watched your later one where you took them out of the dark and they are growing. Can these bulbs be stored and re-used again? If so, would someone use the same system you used by putting them in the dark and leaving them be? I'm referring to using them again and again for a house plant and not planting them outdoors. I just bought a Hyacinth in bloom and trying to learn how to care for it.
Hi Juanita! Thanks for the message. You can regrow hyacinths year after year, but unfortunately because they're prepared specifically, they're not going to perform the same again. At best, their flowers will be small. That's why I recommend planting them outdoors. However, if you want to try them again next year I would make sure they're planted in compost so that they get nutrition, give them some plant food while they've got green growth, and then when they die back, I'd move the pot into a cool dark dry spot until the autumn. Hope that helps!
I love Hyacinths. I currently got soft pink, hot pink, yellow, white, blue, purple, and red. I'm attempting an orange 1 to finish my collection.. Anyway, they are in my top 3 favorite flowers. The smell is so amazing and the stocks are so colorful with bell shaped flowers. They're beautiful.
Yeah I will water them sporadically while they're being kept in the cool and dark, just to keep them slightly moist. Then once they're in the house, I'll water them as with any other indoor plant. Hope this helps!
Would love to be able to do this. I don’t have a dark space. 10 degrees is cold. Would it be OK to put them outside in a dark space? Our typical temps are 25-40 degrees in the winter.
Thank you for this great video. I have a question regarding the 8 or so weeks that they need to be in cool place to grow. Can they grow in a place that is 100% dark? I have a cupboard under the stairs in the stariwell of the apartment block, would this be ok for them?
such a controversial choice, id be one of those people cautious about Hyacinths, I think the scent can be a bit overwhelming . And there is something of the granny about them. (no offence to grannys, some of my best friends are grannys) but maybe ill have a look at them this year , find an unusual variety. After all it was only a few years ago that no one really like dahlias and hydrangeas , and now everyone loves them.
It is controversial isn’t it?!! That’s why I chose it... for me, they’re a total guilty pleasure plant, like cheesy pop music! 😂 But I think if you get a classy looking variety and plant it in a really nice way they can still be a showstopper. You make a very good point of Dahlias and Hydrangeas, trends come and go don’t they...
Oh yeah it sure is! It’s an offshoot of a much larger one and we were given it by a friend who grows quite a few tropical plants. It’s growing SO fast, like SO fast! I absolutely love it!
I bought mine in a glass jar as flowering last year. After the flower dried I still kept the bulb in the jar whole year without water. This year it came back without water or anything. I added water after I saw it had green coming, and now it is flowering. I can't believe it just came on its own while i thought it was dead!

@@niallgardens How long do the leaves last? Do they die back soon after the dead blooms are cut off or do the leaves last till cooler weather sets in?
Supposedly there are seeds that form in the flowers after they're spent. What are these seeds of they grow from bulbs?
Below 10F ? Where else can you put your bulbs when you leave in weather that don’t go below 40F in winter ?
Below 10 degrees Celsius, so I think you should be fine
I am wondering, when it grows , I still put it in water jar until it blossoms?
Yeah - keep the container topped up with water throughout
@@niallgardens Thank you.
do you have to change the water in the bulb jar??
Yeah I would change it every week or two, just to keep it fresh 👍 Otherwise, it can get a bit green and yucky if left too long
I just lay the bulbs on top of the compost, I normally plant them in the ground, when they come up, it seems the flowers are small.
The small flowers could be for a number of reasons but I’d definitely recommend planting them well into the compost rather than laying them on top

Anyway, they are in my top 3 favorite flowers. The smell is so amazing and the stocks are so colorful with bell shaped flowers. They're beautiful.
Growing in compost do you not water them at all? You didn’t mention about watering.
Yeah I will water them sporadically while they're being kept in the cool and dark, just to keep them slightly moist. Then once they're in the house, I'll water them as with any other indoor plant. Hope this helps!
Thankyou 👍
You’re welcome 😊
Would love to be able to do this. I don’t have a dark space. 10 degrees is cold. Would it be OK to put them outside in a dark space? Our typical temps are 25-40 degrees in the winter.
he should’ve said 10°C 😊
Very interesting
Glad you think so! Thanks!
When are ya supposed to plant these Niall
Generally you'd be getting these going in the Autumn - come September all the garden centres will have them for sale 👍
How often do we need to change the water?
I'd just refresh it every week or so, just to keep it fresh
How much sunlight is too much or too little?
For indoor bulbs, they're not too fussy - so I would say regular indoor light but fairly close to a window should work perfectly.
Thank you for this great video. I have a question regarding the 8 or so weeks that they need to be in cool place to grow. Can they grow in a place that is 100% dark? I have a cupboard under the stairs in the stariwell of the apartment block, would this be ok for them?
Yes, absolutely! That'll be perfect! When they're in the cool, dark place, they're developing but not requiring light
Existe un video en español?
Why do they flowers inside the leaves for me? The flower doesn’t rise above the leaves? Is it because no dark time?
Yeah it sounds to me like they needed the few weeks in the dark and cool first 👍
What is that plant next to you ?
It's actually a small banana plant that was given to us by a friend! Thought it looked cute in the pot!
Cute accentttt😅😍
such a controversial choice, id be one of those people cautious about Hyacinths, I think the scent can be a bit overwhelming . And there is something of the granny about them. (no offence to grannys, some of my best friends are grannys) but maybe ill have a look at them this year , find an unusual variety. After all it was only a few years ago that no one really like dahlias and hydrangeas , and now everyone loves them.
and btw ... is that a banana plant thats upstaging you in that video...its a beauty ...looks like there some small side shoots coming up too.
