This was the same company that made a version of the Tube Driver pedal made famous by David Gilmour and Eric Johnson. There were rack mount versions of the pedal as well. A neat relic from a bygone era. Great video, Kyle!
Thank you for finally testing a Tube Works! I must say, there definitely seems to be something wrong with this particular amp; that power swell is not natural, and the tube drive isn't engaging properly - you can even see that when you switch the Tube Drive off at the 6:51 mark, the light doesn't really go off for another few seconds (Side note: with CH. 1&2 switched ON, the Tube Drive switch will not switch between them because they are already stacked). These amps can be rippers when they are dialed in, though. I have three Tube Works - a TD-752 much like this one but as a 2x12 combo mini-stack, the studio version known as the IVAC65, and a mighty RT2100 as a 2x12 combo. Their approach to the controls is weird so they can be tricky, but IMHO the Tube Works stuff really shines when you stack the clean and tube drive channels by having the Ch. 1 &2 switch on. Hit that configuration with an overdrive set to a low distortion level going straight to the the amp input. Then balance the Tube Master knob and the Clean Gain knob to layer the gain stages. This way they can generate HUGE tones that really have the clarity to cut through but also have that saturated high-gain goodness backing it up. No lie, the TD-752 with a good tube (just one 12AX7 is all you need) and the right preamp pedal makes a rig is as good as a lot of stereo amp setups. Maaaaaybe even my number one favorite amp among many Peaveys, Kustoms and a Jet City; but definitely one I could/would grab if the house were burning down. Besides, they look SUPER metal with the black steel mesh and the bright block letters and all that. Too bad you've sent this one off already. I'll just have to bring mine to AmpFest and show them off there...
Hello, I have this amp and when I switch on the tube it makes a huge difference. I think the amp you demoed may need to be serviced. The amp from my experience, is hard to dial in. It has a can sound that with an eq could probably be cleaned up. I myself use a tightmetal pro and it sounds ok.
I have a RT-2100 half stack and sounds great, lots of tonal options. There’s something definitely wrong with this amp he’s demoing, and the noise gate isn’t helping the sound unfortunately
The Tube Driver Pedal was very cool and even fun to run before and after distortion you could almost get power amp saturation tones with it after distortion or in an effects loop. But this amp sounds pretty good for a solid state amp. But it still has that flimsy, sharp and brittle clipping harmonic that's inherent to clipping transisters. It's pretty subdued but I can still hear it. Maybe in a mix it wouldn't matter.
I remember these in shops way back in the 90's, they were always lack luster, I always wondered what people eventually did with theirs. Kind of expensive for what they were
That crumbling thing he's got going on happened with my MosValve power amp (same company, same design here), I've got to think there is something up with these, at this age, some kind of component going out of range. I mean, not all of them did it, or maybe it was just not nearly as noticeable.
I have the TD 752 combo. The preamp of the drive channel is tube but power section is Mosfet as is clean channel. The tube is the BK Butler tubedriver pedal. The best sounding amp hands down but the pots wear out easily. It has a fun feature that allows combining the 2 channels in parallel.
Thank you for featuring some good old solid state heads 🙏 I wish companies would just not bother doing the hybrid thing because it's more often than not just a gimmick and makes the end product more expensive and complicated.
It sounded good but I think it's best with a more hard/classic rock or doom or stoner rock thing. David Gilmour has the pedal and Josh Homme has used a tubeworks amp. I also think that it does need to be serviced.
Thank you for this video! There are definitely not many vids of these amps (especially metal ones) My first experience with jamming in a full band setting in my teen years had me playing through a friend's amp which was the combo version of this amp. I remember it being quite loud.
I belive Megadeth had rack version in their setup during early Marty era if I am not mistaken.. New tube and servicing would make it a better sounding unit
I was gonna say I could've sworn I remember reading in Guitar World back in the day that either Dave or Marty used the rack version on Countdown To Extinction. I remember wanting to get one after reading that thinking it would make my Crate 1x12 combo sound awesome lol
Kyle , I have ONE , only One real question to ask you and all of your viewers?? Why buy a high end boutique amplifier if you don't really like the clean or the distortion channels that they have built in ?? Why do all players always demo an amplifier using other distortion pedals?? Couldn't you just make any cheap amplifier sound amazing using a bunch of pedals then?? Really curious about this one?? Namaste , keep on rocking!
@@joeblow2814 There aren’t many metal amps that are tight enough without an overdrive pedal. I have this crate TDP preamp that doesn’t need one and I had a peavey rockmaster preamp that didn’t need one. Besides that maybe a mesa mark IIC+ doesn’t need one. I can’t think of any besides those. Right my built in reverbs are good enough for me. If I played clean channel guitar I for sure would use a compression pedal since I like the Allan Holdsworth clean tone. His clean playing has no dynamics, it’s like a keyboard. Pedals are a tool but yeah I don’t know why anyone would use a distortion pedal on a clean channel. I haven’t heard a good distortion pedal yet.
I would have to disagree, if you have an amp with shitty tone, no pedal is going to make it sound great. Might make it sound better, but far from great... You have to have a strong base tone to start with. The way in which the overdrive in front of an amp (in a metal context) is being used is to increase the input signal level, not to drive the amp with more distortion, and to carve a little more low end out of the input signal to tighten the sound up more. It is altering the tone of the output of the guitar more than it is altering the tone of the amp itself. Also, you can like the tone of the distortion of your high end boutique amp while still wanting to just tighten it up a little more, or by adding a little more saturation by hitting the input harder. As for outboard and on board FX. In my experience I have found that finding an amp that has both great tone, AND great onboard FX quality is really, really, rare. Usually it is one or the other. So I would rather buy an amp for an unbelievable tone than for it's FX, because you can always add and take away from a great base tone. But when you try and add to a shitty base tone, usually still sounds shitty, just maybe not as shitty. lol
There was a guitar teacher that had an all Tubeworks rack setup. I used to use the MV962 power amp with my Rockmaster when I had a rack. Never knew there was a head though.
They made good products , but not all that modern sounding amps. Now the Tube Works RT-4250(50Wx2 6L6 tube amp) was a great power amp, paired with a Mesa Quad , was my choice rig for a few years, and the Presence knob made that amp great for tweaking your tone. Alas I traded it(just the RT-5250) for a Orange amp that I was not all that fond of, OH WELL. Good vid Kyle .
This one doesn’t seem to have the “stack” channel that cascades the two channels together for more saturation. Also it sounds like something wrong with the power section, probably needs some caps or something. I have this amp as preamp Rt-922 and power amp Mv-962. The power amp has a gain and presence for both channels and the preamp has a very useful contour knob plus a third high gain stack channel. Very worth checking out.

The MXR boost did help it out quite a bit but overall, I just can't get behind this one. The main thing I didn't like here was it had a ripped speaker type distortion. Also it just didn't seem to tighten up very well. Flabby overall maybe... idk I just wasn't about this one. Great content tho Kyle. Its honestly nice to see a bad one (imo) every once in a while. That amp is faulty. The tube drive switch engages the dirty channel. With it off is clean channel. I played a td752 es for 15 years. At this point in time you gotta judge these amps on a case by case basis. Same can be said for the rack preamps and power amps
It does sound like one of those low voltage 9v tube overdrive pedals...in a bad way. That weird compression/volume swell sounds either like weirdly biased fets or that voltage starved 12ax7 sound
You get that at guitar center Las Vegas? They had one the last time I was there a month ago. I’ve had 2 mosvalve 500w poweramps ever since I saw Jerry Cantrell using them in the 90’s. 🤘

Kyuss baby. I think it’s funny that people spend 400 bucks on the tube driver pedal. I got my td-742 for 80 bucks at a pawn shop… the reverb is killer. Some of the most underrated amplifiers ever
Have always been curious about these since seeing them in music mags back in the early 90s. Doesn't sound terrible or anything but there's just something weird going on with it, almost like a lo-fi scratchy thing going on in the mids / highs. Great demo as always but definitely one I would probably pass on.
I don't know if it's your system (doubt it), but it is over-compressing. Sounded better with the MXR pedal. Yeah - you're right. Sounds a bit like the JVM. Yuck. It tends to crap out on the lows...
Why would you go with this over a peavey bandit, which is so much easier to dial in? You did manage to get some old school thrash tones out of it though.
I thought there was something wrong with the video, because you'd play and there's a split second delay. It sounds like a noise gate. Not sure if this amp has a built-in noise gate, but that's what it sounds like to me.
This amplifier you are showcasing is broken the one I have is very very loud and has super clean channel has very nice tight bottom end only issue I've had every three years the pots will get a little bit of a crackle in them when I purchased mine previous owner explain to me just take a little bit of WD-40 squirt a little bit in each pot and holy shit it worked fix it right up it really is a fantastic amp with lot of room for versatility send and return Channels with level knobs for both. For transparency I've played better and worse amplifiers to put things into perspective.
You should probably not spray WD40 inside of your pots. It may solve your issues now, but it will likely cause problems down the road. You can buy electrical contact cleaner or De-oxit from any hardware store and it's ment to be used on things like potentiometers. It cleans everything thoroughly then quickly evaporates. WD40 will stick to everything and make a mess and it's probably conductive which could lead to shorting out something inside the Amp. Just a friendly recommendation.
I think the Real Tube II and MosValve sound way better. I used an ADA MP1 with a Boss NS-2 into a Realtube II and MosValve with Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex in stereo with 2 4x12 cabs
@@belligerentamateur Awesome I really like that guitar, I want one. Have you thought about doing more solid state amp demos? Maybe an Ampeg VH or Randall RG100es possibly.

I think the Real Tube II and MosValve sound way better. I used an ADA MP1 with a Boss NS-2 into a Realtube II and MosValve with Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex in stereo with 2 4x12 cabs
Gotta say it looks cool though 🤘
I would like to hear you say, "...punchy percussive low end..." 100 times as part of an ASMR video.
"ASMR - Tube Triggers..."
This has serious Crate GX-15 vibes.
I noticed your pickup selector switch was in the middle position in the video. Was that on purpose? Just curious if 5hat is how you use that guitar.
Neck pickup is out of the circuit so it makes no difference.
@@belligerentamateur Awesome I really like that guitar, I want one.
Have you thought about doing more solid state amp demos? Maybe an Ampeg VH or Randall RG100es possibly.
Keep up the great work you are coming into your own.
As always, you can get a great sound out of a lot of gear I wouldn't bother with.
Thank you my friend
Heard of Kyuss?
Just curious, what gate are you using man?
Revv G8 here
I feel like there should be a rule, at least one tube for each time you print the word tube on your amp. Love the vol4 look.. I know nothing about the amp but is this by chance related to the boutique "tube driver" pedal? Possibly have one built into the front?
Fair! There is a Tube Driver pedal by this same brand, not boutique though.
If the word tube is a part of the amp name, then its definitely not a real tube amp 😂😂
@@belligerentamateur I was thinking of the Butler Tube Driver, believe the tube works one is a clone
i think this one sounds decent, realy dug the Boss pedal in front. Icepick city. Shame about that preamp overload/swell thing though. Probably need active pups just without battery to get it to behave lol.
Awesome as always Kyle.
Active pickups literally don't work without the battery. You lose 98% of the output at least.
@@RX120D That was my point. Plus I'm not serious.
@@cmd_f5 I clearly missed the joke. Cheers lol
is this just a tube booster or a real preamp? ok i see thought its a chandler clone
I have a RT-2100 half stack and sounds great, lots of tonal options. There’s something definitely wrong with this amp you’re demoing, and the noise gate isn’t helping the sound unfortunately. Also an EQ pedal in the loop gives it more brutal possibilities 🤘🏻
It's got quite the grunt to it🤘
Ah yes.
The Sound of the band Kyuss relied on these amps.
I remember these
Chandler made some cool stuff.
Tell me more
@@belligerentamateur the tube driver, the (also solid state) MosValve . And the blues driver I think it was called, high voltage tube pedals 🤘🏽
I bet this thing is worth about the same as the crappy solid state small combo amps. Sounds about the same.
Legend on the amp tube works tube driver and even a amp stamp on front how many tubes on it none🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey would you consider selling me this amp? Located in socal
Wait, what words does he have to repeat?
That amp sounds all kinda of messed up, like you got a dud. At least you were able to sell it.
Gear hoarders are really starting to frustrate me. I wonder why prices on amps are superficially inflated.....
The word Tube appears FOUR times on the front. Only one tube appears within.
TOOOOOOBZ!
