EDIT* For the Shot In The Dark tunning. I said it correctly but on the diagram I marked the strings incorrect. Low E and A tune up 1/2 a step. DGBE tune Down 1/2 a step.
Jake and Warren DeMartini from Ratt were house mates in LA back before Jake landed the gig with Ozzy, and Warren has these monstrous hands, so Jake made it a point to really stretch out his hands, and even use his thumb to try to compete with him!
I find these ridiculous Jake E Lee stretches completely unnecessary. Yes, it may sound a little different (but better???) but not enough in the great scheme of things to make things so much more difficult to play, especially live. I believe he also had a hand in the Lay it down lick from Ratt which is played on the 5th position on the neck and as such requires a wide stretch to play. I play it in the first (open) position and to my ears it sounds better.
When I really got into Jake's playing after hearing Bark At the Moon, it wasn't his incredible lead playing that hooked me, it was his absolutely unique approach to chords and chord voicings. I could tell that he was using common chords in different ways by playing different inversions and it gave his rhythms a very unique texture. I've spent a lifetime listening to his playing, into this day he never ceases to amaze me.
Get better Jake. Saw him on the Bark at the Moon and Ultimate sin tours and thought he was awesome. Influenced my playing to this day. Also held his own replacing Randy. Jake is his own man and player. God bless and recover soon 🙏🤘. Great video Robert. Keep up the great work
@@gibsonfan159 I'm not actually sure about that. Jake actually has gone on record as having pretty small hands and was frustrated with Warren DiMartini because he had bigger hands. I know some of the stuff was played using thumb position like a cellist might utilize for their higher notes.
My older brother taught me a lot of 80s stuff back in the late 80s/early 90s. The guitar magazines had a lot of the Jake correct way of playing these chords. His stuff was some oft the most challenging stuff to learn pre-internet/TH-cam.
Great video sir! Jake is a HUGE influence on me. He’s a killer player and a good guy. I was lucky enough to see him play in Dallas Tx on the Bark at the Moon tour air the Texas Jam. He was at the top of his game. Jake deserves so much more recognition and respect.
I'm a drummer and always loved his playing. Just my opinion; but he would make a great addition to Cinderella in Jeff LaBar's spot... looks and playing!
Thanks for giving us a dive into the inner workings of Jake's playing. Makes me want to listen to those tunes again. Been a while since I've played them.
I have played a fake version of this for years... I had a friend send me the vid where Jake teaches it correctly and got that under my belt for a while as well but what was funny to me... I had a friend who would argue with me that my faked version was "closer than you think" and I kept telling him like... Dude I'm missing entire chord changes and just covering over the rhythm chugs for that very last bit of the intro... Jake e. Lee deserves way more credit than he gets usually when the topic of Ozzy guitarists comes up.
I really enjoyed this video. Ultimate Sin was one of the first metal records I got as a kid in the 80s. I just gave it a spin recently and forgot how huge the guitar sounds on it. Those are some cool moves man.
I have long observed that the most innovative rock guitar players began as frustrated pianists who couldn't bend notes on a piano (see EVH, Tony MacAlpine), but Jake is king of the lot IMHO. Dude carved his own path like no other, purposely steering away from whammy bar convention and finding fixed bridge techniques all his own, not to mention that wild thumb barring the high B and E string stuff. Thank you for this study and wishing Jake quick mending from that (let's call it what it is) assault on his life
Jake, one of the best ever, no ego, humble, a real musician, never been lucky enough, looking back at Ozzy shit about credits and money Jake deserved, and now, that has been shot, can't believe it, risked to be killed just like Dime. Love him, and his music, song writin', "A fine pink mist", it's an original incredible work, and all his stuff with Badlands is pure and raw art!
I remember reading an article at one time where Jake said that he and Warren Dimartini would have these little guitar competitions and try one-up each other. While trying to outplay Warren, he started doing solos where he would start stretching for these notes and eventually developed his technique from that.
I seen Jake with Ozzy on your back in the day.Such a great guitarist.I love those crazy neck bends and man did he bend those necks.I surprised he never broke it
thank you for this Vid Robert!. I did not know about the weird tunning of shot in the dark. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Jake and his musical abilities as a guitar player.
Well that explains why I could never get Shot In The Dark sounding right, when I used to play it back in the 80's 😂. And as for Bark At The Moon, it's a hard no from my hands on those stretches! 😀 PS, was lucky enough to see Jake live with Ozzy in '84, and him and Randy are definitely my favourite Ozzy guitar players.
I saw the Bark tour in Jacksonville Fl with Crue in tow. Motley’s First US tour and Shout just out. Best costumes of their career and just great. Then to be blown away by the solo that’s now preserved on the Salt Lake City VHS that made it to laser disk and DVD wished I caught the Ultimate Sin tour but have The Ultimate Ozzy on DVD (MTV did play this show on TV in ‘86! Those flurry of tapped harmonics at the beginning of the solo almost topped the “Thumb as the Nut extreme stretches” on Bark. ☮️ Dean
Great video. Been learning those songs again since I picked up a Jake E Lee Charvel for a steal (shout out to Tone Shop Guitars in Dallas). What always struck me in his riff construction was the great blend between open strings ringing combined with the double stops. And the palm muting. And the harmonics. And the tone (gotta have a JB!) And ... and ... and ... I'm so glad he's getting some renewed appreciation and it's been so much fun going over all that material again. I saw him on the Ultimate Sin tour and his interpretation of Rhoads songs and Rhoads-style Sabbath songs steered me to Randy Rhoads and Black Sabbath in the peak of my teenage guitar-learning period.
True story: “Jake: Yeah, the first thing he said was, Do you know how to play a guitar with a wang bar on it? And I said, Of course, anybody can play a guitar with a wang bar, but I don't like it. And he said, Well, why don't you think about using one? Because I don't think you can play some of these songs without one. And I said, I can. I'll show ya and after rehearsal he said, Yeah, fine, it sounds like you've got one, I don't care. As long as it sounds good you don't need to use one.” 😂🤣 I could understand Ozzy’s plight after just having Brad G on his right for several weeks (months?) so he was definitely sold on wang bars, then Jake comes along and plays the same way with NO bar! Mind blown 🤯
Jake is a monster player. I could ape Rhoades and Van Halen licks a few years into playing electric, but after playing for over 25 years now, I still have to be on my A game to play the Jake stuff. Cheers!
Shot in the Dark was the song that really hooked me into my lifelong love of hard rock/ hair metal music, whatever you want to call it. I was a 19 year old newbie just arrived to my Army unit in Germany in early '88. A soldier who had been there a long time took us under his wing, so to speak. He had Ozzy TUS tape, I was hooked. FWIW, I don't think Jake ever played anything but hardtails, I heard him say once he basically had no use for whammy bars. Both of his signature Charvels are hardtails.
The 80s were definitely the greatest modern decade. I turned 18 in 1980, and just started college. And I was 28 at the end of that time period. Damn, I had SO MUCH FUN, back in the 80s, saw tons of amazing bands and thoroughly enjoyed life. This is a cool idea, Robert, thanks for putting it together.
3:15 Jake is so right in saying that. I remember getting tabs in magazines for songs and some of the chord voicings don’t sound right…. I would always search for the correct chord myself. Great breakdown of this song. Thank you.
When is 80’s week? I was 16 to 25 years old during the 80’s started play in 76 got serous in 80 and watched the Metal Blocks on MTV either Fri or Sat night before Headbangers ball launched. VHS and cassette Star Licks and bootlegs. What a time to be alive!! ☮️

Jake is excellent. I remember when I first heard bark at the moon and the ultimate sin album. I loved and missed Randy... but I heard Jake and was blown away. Still am when I listen to it today. Gonna listen to it right now!
The first time I saw the Ultimate Ozzy video I was floored by how he was playing. I couldn't see details but you could see the stretch. on the albums he also had zero qualms about using bonkers guitar tuning that you'd never guess. I was so glad to see Jake come out of retirement and do those Red Dragon Cartel tours and interviews and shed light on his playing.
Great video Robert. Jake is amazing. Would love to see you do one on Dave Meniketti and John Sykes. I think you're definitely the guy for the job. Keep up the good work. It is much appreciated
His Badlands album was better than anything with Ozzy... The hard part is he got used like every guitarist between Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde... Your correct tho many of us used the trem for that solo but when I switched to my Telecaster I started doing it the right way .. But I was more of a Badlands fan than I was when he was with Ozzy...
Even as a non-guitar player, I understand the majority of what you were teaching. Quite fascinating to watch as a Jake fan. Definitely satisfied my curiosity on what was going on in those albums.
I don't play guitar at all but hearing Jake play on the bark at the moon video I knew it was something special, saw ultimate sin tour at cow palace great show one of my favorite concerts
I have shaken hands with Jake and noticed his hands are the same size as mine. On the small side with short thumbs (his are smaller) and pinkies. Jake's thumbs are double jointed though! That allows him to stretch further and play with his thumb on the fretboard. He has said his thumb clamps down and want move.
Every rock guitarist had their own version of BatM. Some were better than others, but literally 100% of them were wrong. 100% of the tabs and videos were wrong before Jake set the record straight. My rendition back in the day was decent but I knew it wasn't quite right. Jake tricked us indeed!
When talking about Lee's thoughts on timbre, think about where he came from: playing with Ozzy _he knew Iommi's playing._ Iommi used extremely light strings to make it easier to play with his prosthetics, and that's how he achieved that thick, heavy tone. He also must have known of SRV, who used the thickest strings he could find and achieved a thin piercing tone. Lee used "light" sets of 10s, and so: If you're playing those mega stretch positions on anything other than 10s, you're _wasting your time._ Just play the easier version.
In that era , and the style and skills of what hard rock/metal giutarists were expected to be capable of , in rythym and lead playing , Jake stamped his unique tone ,composition abilities and authority in a major groundbreaking way. He man- handled the living shit out of his guitars, sqeezing every possible sound and harmonic, fleshing out every chord /riff sequence he could from them, giving the song the most value he could, much like Gary Moore, Michael Schenker , Jeff Beck , EVH and Angus , he humanised the guitar when effects pedals , processing units , whammy bars, and two handed tapping /sweep picking cliche's were rampant at the time, .was it really neccessary for him to use his left thumb as an anchor note and stretch every other finger to make a mega chord as if he was plaing piano?.. but,.. thats the way he did it to make it sound right, and damn ,..it looked cool, and as a lone guitarist he knew he would have to play these songs live with just a keyboard player, no second axeman, so thats a lot of ground to cover without sounding weak , messy or over playing..Jake had all the bases covered and did his best with and for Ozzy while also facing the shitty resistance and snobbery from the R.R gatekeepers and 'purists' early on, ironic since Randy was tiring of that style of music and playing anyway , Jake is such a brilliant artist and performer and songwriter.
I think Randy was moving to classical or moving back to it. It seems to be where his heart was. I think he would have taken the money and used it to get his classical degrees and the best tuition you could for classical guitar. I think you see it in tunes like Dee. A shame. I prefer Jake as a rock / hard rock player for some reason.
Love your stuff, short, concise and well explained. Robert Baker is definitely one of the best on YT. Not sure if getting shot during a robbery qualifies as an "accident" though...😢
Haha! Listening there to Jake play it slow and he almost played it in the rhythm of "No More Mr. Nice Guy" by Alice Cooper!!! It's the same first 3 or 4 chords! I never realized that before until he accidentally played the in the same rhythm as A.Cooper! So funny to hear where he got that from...but totally made it unrecognisable by playing faster in a different rhythm and adding a little bit making it his "own" thing and turning it into " a great song..."Bark at The Moon"!
I was more of a punk underground guy then, so Jake was sort of a guilty pleasure for me. He's one of the players from that era that really did have his own thing going on, and it was always catchy as hell 😎
My first exposure to Jake was seeing him perform with Ozzy on (get this) SOLID GOLD in the early 80’s. I thought the opening riff to Bark at The Moon sounded great and his playing sounded natural and unforced (certainly not a Randy clone). He was perfect for Ozzy at that moment. And dang did he look COOL. God bless him.
Check out a band called Cry Of Love. I think they were early 90s. The guitar player's name is Audley. Freed, they got a record deal the singer quit? They made 2 albums. Audley went on to play with black crows, Jimmy Page, and then Sheryl Crow. Has been with her for years now, very, very good guitar player.
My fingers aren't long enough to pull off those stretches comfortably so I have to improvise. I loved Jake's style since the beginning and fortunately I got to see him live in '86.
ACCIDENT? Really dude, accident! Someone shot him, and it wasn't by accident. That shit doesn't happen by accident. However, i'm really glad your doing this Jake E Lee episode, and i'm lucky to have seen him live 1986 with Ozzy at Monsters Of Rock. one of my top five favorite guitarists for sure.
I love Jake and his Ozzy era riffs and solos. That said, I think you really missed the boat here in not discussing at least some of his epic work as the lead guitarist for Badlands!
EDIT*

Jake is the reason I picked up the bass! 😂
at 72, i concur.same as seeing Danny Gatton, The Hellecasters , Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola and friend Albert Lee❤
Pick up the guitar and be you... Jake never wanted to be anyone but himself. You just got a work at being you. DON'T stop playing bass too.
Jake E. Lee is one of my favorite shredders. He is a magnificent guitarist.
He likes those long stretchy chords. The Badlands song Dusk is a good example of this. Absolutely love Jake’s Playing, phenomenal.

He also must have known of SRV, who used the thickest strings he could find and achieved a thin piercing tone. Lee used "light" sets of 10s, and so:
If you're playing those mega stretch positions on anything other than 10s, you're _wasting your time._ Just play the easier version.
Cool stuff man thanks a lot
I just recently discovered Jake, hope he is recovering, and yes he is one of the best for definitely sure!
Red Dragon Cartel. The latest band from Jake kicks ASS!!
YES!
Those headstock bends are pure genius 🤯
I prefer Jake's style over all other Ozzy guitarists. I like that angry sounding pick attack. Great stage presence too.
Bark at the tendinitis
😂
The ULTIMATE SIN is my favorite OZZY record, very underrated imo - but not many others give it credit
Shot in the Dark is my lest favorite song but that tuning & behind the nut bends are super cool.
Jake is one of a kind. Wish he had more opportunities to shine as a songwriter for more notable bands over the course of his career.
Jake is the man, my youngest son’s name is inspired by him Jake E. Zee
That Charvel is wicked as hell.
As much an "accident" as the people in the ER with strange objects that "accidentally" lodged themselves in their tailpipes😂
@@rickcrotts6673 🤣😂
He interrupted a burglary, they shot at him .
@stephenskiles7782 😳 really, that's not very cool
Accidental shootings happen all the time. This one wasnt. But sometimes guns do kill people without a person intending to shoot someone
Jake is my favorite Ozzy guitarist, so good.
Cool guitars on this vid🤘
Shout out to Jake. I hope he recovers well from the gunshots.
Beautyful video thanks….!!
Ozzy's Guitar Players were like Galactus's heralds. Jake is right up there with the best of them.
Also loved Badlands!
I love Jake and his Ozzy era riffs and solos. That said, I think you really missed the boat here in not discussing at least some of his epic work as the lead guitarist for Badlands!
Wow some things i can learn 😊
Who won the G&L ?
my favorite guitar Hero
Awesome vid. Jake RULES!
Love Jake!
