Thank you. Unfortunately, there were other factors at play, such as I had no say in whether or not I wanted to go stay with them, but there were also the factors of both of them being malignant narcissists and alcoholics, with my father having untreated mental health issues on top of the above. I am now 14, and I escaped my father when I was 12, and haven't seen or heard from him ever since. I live with my mom, stepfather, and younger sisters. Now, YTTD is not something I expected in a Psych2Go video at all. But video was helpful since meanin of gaslightning was a bit hazy for me yet it's something I experienced(was guilttripping me, saying others were badmouthing me yet she was doing so behind my back)and which still has aftereffects of having less faith in myself... well, at least I got better and that person is in a metaphorical hell(got what they deserved)

@@Psych2go Gaslighting has long been in my older brother's behavioral repertoire. He is all but 2 years and eight months to the day older than me (as well as my twin sister--we'll be turning 63 this month, the older brother turns 66 in mid-December). That brother and I have shared a lot of things including people I once called friends over the years. But with the passing of our parents (father 8 years ago, mother this past April) the situation has deteriorated to the point where I have no use for him as well as those he continues to slander me about.
Problem is, other factors have forced me to become extremely isolated. Never have I needed true friends more and I'm being forced to relocate because of the affordable housing crisis. I'm on my 2d SSDI disability claim and live 7 hours away from those who have become toxic to me over time, but suddenly cannot afford to live anywhere near my trusted therapist with whom I had a phone session just today. I shan't go any further, but
I gather you have an inkling of just one part of the current crisis I'm staring down and trying to deal with every day.

Wow! I really like number 4, "they attack you", its such a common way that gaslighters do, it feels miserable and makes you negative talk yourself to the point where you believe them. Big hugs to everyone that is struggling with being gaslighted constantly. Whether they are in a relationship, family, or close friends. Remember to stay strong and remember sometimes its better to cut your losses early before it becomes to hard later. ❤❤❤

It is so true when you say that cutting your losses early will save you a lot of hardship. Sadly, this is where I feel that the Canadian divorce system fails. I had to endure ten years of gaslighting from 2 narcissists as a child, and I couldn't cut ties with them until I was 12, and by that point, it was extremely difficult because even though I knew I would be better off without them, I just couldn't do it. Thankfully I did, but it was still difficult nonetheless. I wish I could've cut ties with them sooner, because it would've saved me a lot of trouble....

Imagine that my ex said that if I keep doing a certain thing I’ll ruin all of my future relationships, and btw I only asked him why he said something different in the past. Yeah I did that a lot, because he said some things and then he changed what he said, or acted differently so I wanted to know why this was happening. I guess I was always finding out that he was lying or not telling all the truth and in the end he was exhausted. But that reaction made me feel really bad about myself, after all I just wanted to know which was the truth

My fav antagonist is prob either Ranger, or Midori/Sou
though I didn't want to include any spoilers for people who havn't played YTTD so i decided to just put him as Sou since thats how he introduces himself in the beginning

I spent 11 years with a person like this. Heartless master manipulator who was building second reality behind my back, yet I thought the world was against me and that person was the only one who was on my side. After break up it felt like someone tore out a hudge part of yourself from your body, cos those ppl often have a chameleon personality which makes you believe they r second part of your soul, and the moment u do realize they never loved you and all of the reality u lived in was an illusion its the worst and best moment of your life.
To whoever in relationship like this, run. It takes a lot of time to comeback to your true self, but it will happened eventually. For me it was more than a year, which was mostly crying at the beginning. Now after 13 months it happens I'm crying sometimes but out of pure happiness, as there were moments when one's losing hope in the relationship with master manipulator and forgets what "normal life" used to be. Stay strong.

I also among so many experienced this too from my mother and sister as a child, and throughout my teen years. I believed I was a horrible child at 6 years old from all the gaslighting. It is strange though, as an adult I took all of what they said, and believed all of it. I still struggle today about my self worth, having deep insecurities, and I do believe this has had an effect on my life; decision making, etc. Also, some of my relationship choices nearly matched my mother. There are a couple of ideas I have, such as; Replacing a negative thought you have about yourself with a positive one, even if you don't believe yourself just keep doing it. It changes your thought process about yourself in the long run. Also, cognitive therapy is very helpful if needed. Love & Light to all. ♡

My first love seems to be an expert on gaslighting. She always promised things and didn’t keep her word. She always said that her father will go nuts because of religious reasons. That ended in a huge dispute and it took about 5/6 years to get out of that vicious circle.
I’m pretty sure that my biggest love did. some gaslighting when we broke up. I assumed that she was worried of getting dumped while I was fully committed to us. She left me because of her fear of being left and blamed me. I think it’s an after effect of traumatic events in her life before we’ve met. I still think of her as a amazing person.

When I was in highschool, I got one guy who was gaslighting one of my close friend. At first I had my doubts when I noticed a change in my friends behaviour , later when I asked her about what was going with her , she then told me all about that happened between her and that guy ( one of this old classmate). As soon as I understood the situation , I told her that she's been gaslighted by that guy. I advised her not get any more involved with that guy than she is already did.
After few weeks when I met with her again she was doing fine and also started acting normal than ever .
This points mentioned in this video are very well matched and really something to look out for .

I was gaslit by my “best friend” for two years without realizing it. He constantly lied, attacked me, wore down my self esteem, and planted doubts about my other friends in my mind (about what they were saying/thought about me). He made me think I was insane, and that he was the only one I could trust. Really hurt my GPA and social life waking up from it too.

All of these signs apply to my online ‘friend’. I have the ability to leave them at any time, and I have before. I left them for almost a year straight. But it’s really, really hard to leave when there’s other people falling victim to their gaslighting, specifically people you met as a result of them. And you obviously think about telling them, but you fear that they’ll defend the gaslighter. Also, here’s a thing, the gaslighter may have talked about you TO them behind your back. And then they’ll think that YOU are the gaslighter. I know this because said gaslighter has talked about my own friend to me. Luckily I know that they are trustworthy, but I question it sometimes, which proves how powerful gaslighting really is.

until today, many people around gaslight me, twisting my reality, convincing me that their narcissistic, manipulative behavior is a form of love and is normal. this affected my trust issues and confused me a lot, dismissing and invalidating my feelings made me suppress my emotions unconsciously. most ppl in my area, starting at home, gaslight me. 3:37 The smartest person can fall prey.
This is a true statement,a truth that can be taken literally farther than you may initially think. I have a high level of intelligence I’ve inherited from my family, given multiple of my family members are part of high iq societies. I’ve been a victim of gaslighting at the hands of my parents my entire childhood. I’m 19, and I’ve only recently recognized that truth with the help of moving away from them. I’m grateful I can recognize patterns of toxicity now including gaslighting. But don’t dismiss this point, this is arguably the most important one. You may think “Oh they’re legitimately intelligent, they must not have any problems because they’re either too smart to have them or if they do have them, they can resolve it fairly easily.” No. I understand the reasoning behind this way of thinking, however you should also take note that high intelligence can also lead to doubt coupled with overthinking because of the ability to see more possibilities and outcomes than the general population, leading to overwhelm mostly due to the fact that BECAUSE most others can’t see them, the intelligent person who is a victim to gaslighting will find that they have no one to turn to to reassure and comfort them, OR give insight and deny that any negative possibility is false.

With this and various other behaviors, I'm often wondering about people who do these things and genuinely don't realize they're doing it. I feel like I've been in a few situations that may have been gaslighting, but I'm not sure how aware the person was about their manipulations and twisted perspectives. Both people came from very different, but very toxic upbringings with residual learned behaviors.

I very recently learned how toxic this relationship thanks to you phy2go, I have a lot of trouble having a healthy relationship with people since I always want to be alone and feel anxious when someone asks me to do stuff that my toxic friend would not agree to even though I really wanted to go there. since me and the toxic person are related I still see them like once every two months for family stuff or when I need to be at their house because no one’s at my house and they have not made any change whatsoever, it’s like they don’t want to grow which is pretty sad ngl

I had a housemate who gaslighted me. He would lie to me, deceive me, try to get a reaction out of me, and blame me for everything - even when it was he fault. He wouldn't clean up after himself. His ego was so big, that I'm surprised his head fit through the door. When he started taking my stuff, and telling me that I must've misplaced it, I felt like my grip on reality was slipping. I moved out of a house that I liked in a location I liked to get away from him. In the following weeks I technically became homeless and I stayed with an aquaintance of my uncle. Even then, I still refused to move back to that house. I even had to go through a tribunal to get my name off the lease, as there's no protections for domestic violence among housemates. He then couldn't afford the rent, and ran out on his lease. Unfortunately my bond money (security deposit) was still attached to that house, and I lost 2/3 of it. :(

Not sure if what's happening to me is gaslighting, but lately my family has been making me feel like the problem child because I have been getting disrespected by them and they violate my boundaries. There was a time that I let them and didn't say anything. Now I've finally started to call out the behavior and asked to be treated better and they make me believe that I'm blowing everything out of proportion and trying to find disrespect where there wasn't any. Like I've set boundaries and they mock my boundaries. Or I've put distance between us to save my own mental well being and I get told that the act of taking time to myself is disrespectful. Or that walking away from conflict is disrespectful. I'm seriously at my wits end. I try resolving conflict with my family by talking it out and I can't get a sentence out before I start crying. Then they tone police me and tell me that my stance/expression is very aggressive and they don't want to talk it out with me because of my body language. I've tried talking it out and they will bring up random things that upset them and when I try to elaborate on what upset them, they ask me "what are you talking about now?" And act like I'm bringing up completely random things when THEY BROUGHT IT UP IN THE FIRST PLACE!! There's been times where I'm trying to resolve an issue that happened immediately in the moment and they bring up the past to guilt trip me and remind me of things I did that I already apologized for that they never let go of. I haven't gotten an apology for a very messed up comment that my sister's boyfriend made. I havent gotten an apology for being condescended at my workplace in front of my coworkers. And I haven't gotten an apology for being mocked and guilt tripped whenever I get disrespected and try to resolve the issue. I just want to be treated like an equal and now it seriously feels like I'm being singled out because my family will invite all my other siblings over and never talk to me. I've tried opening communication with my sister over text and will go two weeks without an answer, but then I'm told to my face that I don't reach out enough and if I don't come along when my siblings are invited that it's my own fault for feeling left out. It feels like they're giving me the cold shoulder because I won't let them treat me poorly. I don't know what to do or how to make them realize that the way they're treating me actually IS wrong and I'm not just making a huge deal about everything.

    • @kitcat2179
      @kitcat2179 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Iuffycs I've been no contact with said sister for 8 months now. Go figure this comment was leading up to me needing to break it off :/ The best advice I can give is to just be firm in your boundaries and if the chaos and negativity and gaslighting keeps persisting, it's best to stonewall or just go no contact if things escalate to violence or abuse.
I'm sorry you're going through gaslighting too. It sucks worse when it comes from family who you'd think know you the best, so they would be the right people to go to for support. I know how that feels all too well. I hope everything works out with you and your sister and you can come to an understanding before it ever has to turn into something more drastic.

i think it might be worth pointing out that "gaslighters" may not be a clear conscious role. they might be trapped in their own lies moments at a time, instinctively/unconsciously exploiting/observing little thing that helps isolate people toward their cause. i feel bad for this friend of mine trapped behind his wife's iron claw. even their new neighbor who barely heard them through the walls was like... "she's kindda controlling huh?"
