Had a beater and was in the same boat, no new clips. Pads went on anyway and didnt have an issue. Glad im not the only one, lol

When doing brakes in the field with limited equipment sometimes I've used the old clips over. If you have a trailer hitch on your van you can fab up a fixture that slides in. Mount a small vise and now you have a way to clamp the caliper bracket. A wire wheel in a cordless drill will usually clean up the grooves. A fine tooth file works well in a pinch. Then you can apply a thin coat of brake grease. This will help prevent rust from building up under the clips. That liquid road salt does a number. While the caliper bracket is clamped in the vise you can clean out the slide pin bores with a bore brush. Some of those brake lubes tend to harden over time and cause the slide pins to be sticky. I use Sil Glyde brake grease for the pins.

I have not heard of this vice trailer hitch ill definitely have to check that out. I HAVE strongly considered a trailer hitch but with 200k+ miles and its already on its 2nd transmission I hesitate to get a tow package. Then again if it was just for a vice it might be worth it. I appreciate the tip man.

@@Andys_Auto To my knowledge I don't believe anyone manufactures one. It's a concept I've been thinking of making. Simple enough to fab up and won't take up precious cargo space.

I absolutely agree with what your saying. Sil glyde is great and even comes in a portable tube kinda like what lotion and stuff would come in. Great for on the go. When I was in automotive school my teacher has the extreme paramtec brake grease. The purple stuff.
Im going to look into the bore brushes you mentioned to clean out the slide pin bore. I usaully just use a worn drill bit and l lightly go around. Using not much pressure. Then see if the slide pin slides freely. Then put everything back together.

They make dedicated brake caliper bracket files for grinding down the rust where the hardware sits. I always take the time to clean up the surfaces where the hardware goes on. Cause if you don't and you live in a place where rust is a big deal. You will get rust jacking and your pads will stick and wear out even faster. To prevent rust jacking you gotta take off the hardware and grind the surfaces on the bracket then apply thin layer of caliper grease and if you do reuse hardware atleast give it a good cleaning. Then reapply brake pads. You want them to slide back in fourth very smoothly with little to no resistance at all.
Im one of those people that if I don't go all the way in a task I'd wait till a day I can take my time and do it right the first time. Sometimes the little extra time you put in saves you time and money in the end.
I like watching your content. Your doing well. 🙂

Just use a pair of long channel lock piers and the old brake pad and you can push the brake caliper piston back into it's bore that way....
