Hey, just wanted to clarify something for our friends visiting from China. Yeah, you'll notice that there are a lot of foreign workers in Kuala Lumpur, usually from countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, and even the Middle East. Pretty much people from all over Asia are here. And yeah, some of these guys act like they've never seen a woman before, especially when they stare. Even we locals find it annoying sometimes. Just so you know, Malaysian guys usually don’t stare at women, even those wearing revealing clothes. That's because in Malaysia, we have three major races: Malays, Chinese, and Indians (plus our friends from Sabah and Sarawak). So, we're kinda used to seeing Malaysian Chinese women dressed a bit more openly, it’s not a big deal for us. Most of the time, the ones doing all the staring are foreign workers in KL. And it’s pretty rare for Malaysians to ask you for photos or anything. We’ve been taught to be respectful towards tourists, and most of us just mind our own business. It’s not that we’re rude or unfriendly; we just respect your privacy. But once you get to know us, Malaysians are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet! @Karim-so9jc well I lived in manitoba for 2.5 years. I went to the Indian reserves up north. They stared too being curious to see Asians up north in the Indian reserve (first nations). But I am male. Staring at solo women makes them feel insecure.
Literally, most Malaysian men are educated and busy working, they don't have time linger on to stare at these foreign women (except the Moroccan) they look so common, btw most Malaysian women are more decent, classy and attractive.. I don't know, and i try not to be stereotypical, but i saw lot of interview like this. But everytime PRC being interviewed, we can see how critical PRC talking about other country. Feel unsafe, feel threatened etc.. As they are superior than other. But everyone knows how loud they are in public, rude and lack of manners etc. Look at the last girl from PRC, she felt uncomfortable if other people wanna take photo with her, but she is the one who ask Ben for photo.. I rest my case.

There are good and bad tendencies in any society but staring at foreigners or asking for selfies from them are definitely NOT Malaysian tendencies. First Malaysia itself is a multiracial country. Second, for centuries Malaysians are used to the coming and going of various nationalities : Arabs, Indians, Chinese, Europeans (starting with the Portuguese colonisers in 1511 AD, then the Dutch and the British), plus in recent centuries immigrants from China, South Asia and neighbouring countries. Third, Malaysia receives over 20 million foreign tourist arrivals each year. Fourth, there are at least 7 million migrant workers in Malaysia (from Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia...) - equivalent to 22 percent of the country's population and 45 percent of the country's workforce. For those four reasons, Malaysians are so used to seeing foreigners in all shapes and sizes - and skin colours. Therefore foreigners are not a novelty to us Malaysians - we don't stare at them nor ask for selfies from them. Agreed 💯%, but the interview level or judgement is as what we see. We have daily westerners visiting Taman Negara Jerantut Pahang, we don't even care to look at them nor bother. Unless if they're lost or unable to communicate with local in English. Then some will assist depending on the language. The Argentinian girl said she feels unsafe in KL compare to Indonesia and Vietnam don't know what she's talking about. KL is definitely a lot more safer than Jakarta, and this is coming from Indonesian. Even as a male you need to watch out and avoid certain area in Jakarta at night. The girl from China said she got stared a lot, this is weird too because there are a lot of Chinese Malaysian, why would they stare at her when Chinese are common in Malaysia. Its not like they can differentiate between Chinese Malaysian and Chinese from China.
Actually there are some differences between China Chinese and local Chinese. I'm from Singapore and I can just tell if they're from China or not. Malaysian Chinese and Singaporean Chinese are hard to tell apart appearance wise. But once they speak, we sgeans can tell 😂. I also find that China ladies dress more stylishly compared to locals, so that's probably why they get looks.

Mainland Chinese men and women always talks loudly and making a scene in public area, making them catchy in the public. You dont see these kind of behaviour in Japanese and Korean tourist who are sophisticated and well mannered. Mainlander also like to look down on migrant south Asian worker thinking that they are higher class and better than them. 😅

If you ever feel unsafe always reach out to us locals. More than happy to help out. Its a community thing. Usually its the foreign workers that stares alot but they don’t cause any harm.
Its a valid question to ask if tourist can differentiate locals from migrant workers. unless you have stayed for an extended period, its doubtful they can. so it gives an inaccurate depiction of how Malaysian actually are.
Yes this is true. I think women should be able to wear anything they want, but they do need to understand that certain clothing styles will come at the price of men staring, that’s just it how goes.

It’s funny, but even as a male, I’ve noticed that Rohingyas and Bangladeshis tend to stare at people for no apparent reason. However, they usually stop and look away whenever I raise my eyebrows and say, “What?”
Yea same here, almost every time they'll keep eye contact, I always glance and look away. I don't think they even realize it's strange social etiquette, it feels like to them it's just normal behavior. Then she walked towards Bukit Bintang, I bet she walked those alley that local ourselves dares not venture since it's populated with immigrants be it legal or illegal. Yet if they think Malaysia is not safe, please don't visit us and remembered to tell your friends that Malaysia is not safe. It will help us a lot, we don't need to share our subsidies on gas etc with foreigners nor our local foods demand don't drastically increase which leads to higher cost of goods. Yearly we have to forked out at least RM 5 Biilions to 8 Billions on additional cost of subsides due to tourists influx. Also due to tourists, local food price is more expensive. For example Jerantut my hometown food price is more expensive than neighboring district due to influx of tourists to Taman Negara. Reason, higher demand of goods

You’re right about the staring part. In Malaysia, staring is considered rude unless something is seriously wrong or interesting. I’ve noticed people from Bangladesh, Nepal, or Pakistan tend to stare more openly. When I asked a bangladeshi friend why, he said it's normal for men to stare at women. I told him it’s rude and offensive here, and he didn’t know! 😂

Malaysia is Safe! Police roaming around the streets. Anyway, Malaysian will not ask a photo with you. That is foreigner working in Malaysia. So yeah, as a tourist, you have to identify which is foreigner & which is Malaysian.
I've been in Malaysia a few times and find the local to be quite friendly and helpful. I was approached a few times at KLCC by people (couple, then woman and later a man) asking for money, the first time I was shocked as it was my second visit and never experienced that on the first time when I was there for almost a month. The guy was getting loud and telling me the money was for their baby (they had a baby in a carriage). Looking at how they were dressed, they certainly didn't seem like they were in need of help. I saw them another day hanging out and started approaching tourist with the same stunt. Another time I say a guy approached an Asian woman, thought they new each other as they were conversing, then I noticed she put her drink on the wall and went into her bag to get something and he picked up the drink and started drinking it. He started to get upset with her and raised his voice and a guard was in the vicinity and started to approach them and her ran out into traffic to get away from the guard. The guard then chatted with the lady and folks standing in the same area as my were saying it was somebody trying to get money from her. People visiting may not be able to tell the difference in Malay accent compared to those from another country and might mistake them for locals, hence the belief that Malaysia isn't safe and that the people harassing them are Malaysians. Malaysia is a safe country however, like most, there will be bad actors that come and do things that they do in their country, making other tourist believe it is being done by locals.
The women in the video were respectful. No racist here. But people who lived in Singapore/Malaysia know the color of the skin that stare a lot at women ahah 😂
Most of it not even the locals one who stare them. Locals Indian didn't even do that. Most of it who act like never see white fair skin women, or even see women are workers from South Asia, especially those from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
Singaporean here. Yup true. But lately I noticed the migrant workers aren't staring as much as they used to. I think they have been educated. And honestly though, if these ladies are gonna wear skimpy clothes, even the women are going to look, especially the conservatives ones and they are not looks of admiration 😅

Subscribed, because.. 1. You're observant about the migrants in KL. Whichever sides you guys are on, it’s clear that Malaysia does have migrant issues. From the corrupted imigration/ enforcement officials and officers to illegal immigrants who risking their life for a better livelihood, we the Malaysians suffer the detriments brought about by the increasing immigrant population. 2. Called out the chinese girl double standard in asking for your photo, she even became uneasy afterwards for calling her out (the hand shooing you away). 3. You're also very keen and perceptive, when asking them if they can actually differentiate between the locals and migrants. Many tourists didn't realize they cannot. For example, the local Malaysians will hardly ask chinese individuals for a photo since we already have our local chineses and have been living with them forever and their presences are not foreign to us to even ask for their photo..

As a Malaysian myself, I would say that for the most part, the everyday, average Malaysian is respectful of personal space and are hesitant to openly stare. We are a friendly lot, yes, but there's also a sense of bashfulness or even self consciousness. Some Malaysians do stare, especially those who aren't used to meeting foreigners, but those tend to be in the minority. As much as I hate to stereotype, a lot of migrants do tend to stare and unashamedly ask for selfies or take your photo from far without asking. Maybe it's normal in their culture and they don't think it's wrong to stare. Any Malaysian can tell who is a migrant, not just by looking, but by their mannerisms. Unfortunately not foreign tourists, and it's sad they feel uncomfortable. As a female, when I was a teenager, I hated walking past migrant workers because their eyes will follow you but thank God there weren't any camera phones back then. But with that said, I hope this does not make people think it's okay to treat migrants badly or make it an excuse to dehumanise them.
As a born and bred KL guy. The capital is much more safer than it was from 2 decades ago. BUT do not make yourself a target, that's the golden rule. And watch out for snatch thieves.

Hmmmm, this was interesting to watch. It is ashame some women feel unsafe in many parts of the world. There are ways to admire women, without looking all Big Bad Wolf. This was a good learning video. I see alot of comments saying Malaysians men are respectful, and its mostly immigrants that have been the sly ones.
I believe your interviews are fair and important for the Malaysian authorities to improve on various issues. One of it would be safety. I do believe that real Malaysians don't really stare at foreigners. Usually the migrants might stare a fair bit, usually the people sleeping on the streets aren't Malaysians, usually.

I think it’s up to the government at that point to prevent this kind of thing, although that’s not easy I suppose
Yes it is 😊 if you’re in bigger cities like Buenos Aires or Rosario you need to be careful around some areas, but just like you’d do in Barcelona or Paris. The rest of the country is pretty good to be honest, I highly recommend it

Hey, just wanted to clarify something for our friends visiting from China. Yeah, you'll notice that there are a lot of foreign workers in Kuala Lumpur, usually from countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, and even the Middle East. Pretty much people from all over Asia are here.
And yeah, some of these guys act like they've never seen a woman before, especially when they stare. Even we locals find it annoying sometimes. Just so you know, Malaysian guys usually don’t stare at women, even those wearing revealing clothes. That's because in Malaysia, we have three major races: Malays, Chinese, and Indians (plus our friends from Sabah and Sarawak). So, we're kinda used to seeing Malaysian Chinese women dressed a bit more openly, it’s not a big deal for us.
Most of the time, the ones doing all the staring are foreign workers in KL. And it’s pretty rare for Malaysians to ask you for photos or anything. We’ve been taught to be respectful towards tourists, and most of us just mind our own business. It’s not that we’re rude or unfriendly; we just respect your privacy. But once you get to know us, Malaysians are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet!

There are good and bad tendencies in any society but staring at foreigners or asking for selfies from them are definitely NOT Malaysian tendencies.
First Malaysia itself is a multiracial country. Second, for centuries Malaysians are used to the coming and going of various nationalities : Arabs, Indians, Chinese, Europeans (starting with the Portuguese colonisers in 1511 AD, then the Dutch and the British), plus in recent centuries immigrants from China, South Asia and neighbouring countries. KL is definitely a lot more safer than Jakarta, and this is coming from Indonesian. Even as a male you need to watch out and avoid certain area in Jakarta at night. The girl from China said she got stared a lot, this is weird too because there are a lot of Chinese Malaysian, why would they stare at her when Chinese are common in Malaysia. Actually there are some differences between China Chinese and local Chinese. I'm from Singapore and I can just tell if they're from China or not. Malaysian Chinese and Singaporean Chinese are hard to tell apart appearance wise. But once they speak, we sgeans can tell 😂. I also find that China ladies dress more stylishly compared to locals, so that's probably why they get looks.

If you ever feel unsafe always reach out to us locals. More than happy to help out. Its a community thing. Usually its the foreign workers that stares alot but they don’t cause any harm.
Its a valid question to ask if tourist can differentiate locals from migrant workers. unless you have stayed for an extended period, its doubtful they can. so it gives an inaccurate depiction of how Malaysian actually are.

You’re right about the staring part. In Malaysia, staring is considered rude unless something is seriously wrong or interesting. I’ve noticed people from Bangladesh, Nepal, or Pakistan tend to stare more openly. When I asked a bangladeshi friend why, he said it's normal for men to stare at women. I told him it’s rude and offensive here, and he didn’t know! 😂

Malaysia is Safe! Police roaming around the streets. Anyway, Malaysian will not ask a photo with you. That is foreigner working in Malaysia. So yeah, as a tourist, you have to identify which is foreigner & which is Malaysian.
I've been in Malaysia a few times and find the local to be quite friendly and helpful. I was approached a few times at KLCC by people (couple, then woman and later a man) asking for money, the first time I was shocked as it was my second visit and never experienced that on the first time when I was there for almost a month. The guy was getting loud and telling me the money was for their baby (they had a baby in a carriage). Looking at how they were dressed, they certainly didn't seem like they were in need of help. I saw them another day hanging out and started approaching tourist with the same stunt. Another time I say a guy approached an Asian woman, thought they new each other as they were conversing, then I noticed she put her drink on the wall and went into her bag to get something and he picked up the drink and started drinking it. He started to get upset with her and raised his voice and a guard was in the vicinity and started to approach them and her ran out into traffic to get away from the guard. The guard then chatted with the lady and folks standing in the same area as my were saying it was somebody trying to get money from her.
People visiting may not be able to tell the difference in Malay accent compared to those from another country and might mistake them for locals, hence the belief that Malaysia isn't safe and that the people harassing them are Malaysians. Malaysia is a safe country however, like most, there will be bad actors that come and do things that they do in their country, making other tourist believe it is being done by locals.
Couples carrying a baby and asking for money to buy something for their baby to eat is a SCAMMER and I can tell you that they're not Malaysian too.

1. You're observant about the migrants in KL. Whichever sides you guys are on, it’s clear that Malaysia does have migrant issues. From the corrupted imigration/ enforcement officials and officers to illegal immigrants who risking their life for a better livelihood, we the Malaysians suffer the detriments brought about by the increasing immigrant population.
2. Called out the chinese girl double standard in asking for your photo, she even became uneasy afterwards for calling her out (the hand shooing you away).
3. You're also very keen and perceptive, when asking them if they can actually differentiate between the locals and migrants. Many tourists didn't realize they cannot. For example, the local Malaysians will hardly ask chinese individuals for a photo since we already have our local chineses and have been living with them forever and their presences are not foreign to us to even ask for their photo..

This video came our good. Audio quality is also good. i would recommend next time to pan the camera 360 just to show to the viewers the area you are in & what it looks like around you and get get a feel of the ambience of that area before you start the interviews. Good job & cheers

As a Malaysian myself, I would say that for the most part, the everyday, average Malaysian is respectful of personal space and are hesitant to openly stare. We are a friendly lot, yes, but there's also a sense of bashfulness or even self consciousness. Some Malaysians do stare, especially those who aren't used to meeting foreigners, but those tend to be in the minority.
As much as I hate to stereotype, a lot of migrants do tend to stare and unashamedly ask for selfies or take your photo from far without asking. Maybe it's normal in their culture and they don't think it's wrong to stare. Any Malaysian can tell who is a migrant, not just by looking, but by their mannerisms. Unfortunately not foreign tourists, and it's sad they feel uncomfortable.
As a female, when I was a teenager, I hated walking past migrant workers because their eyes will follow you but thank God there weren't any camera phones back then.
But with that said, I hope this does not make people think it's okay to treat migrants badly or make it an excuse to dehumanise them.
As a born and bred KL guy. The capital is much more safer than it was from 2 decades ago. BUT do not make yourself a target, that's the golden rule. And watch out for snatch thieves.
As malaysian female in my 30s …for me Malaysian mans are mostly good & gentlemen.. they don’t stare and mind their own business. Those who like to stare is the immigrant workers from South Asia, India, Bangladesh etc. And also I had bad experience with African continent man who followed me until my hostel during my study years!!!! Those immigrants mostly like to stare and disturb us… macam tak pernah tengok perempuan!!!!

Bangladeshi are very nice people I visited Bangladesh 2 times and i feel they are excellent people never had any problem with them whatsoever. I am not sure why Malaysians don't like them

Ben. This was an interesting video in general. But why did you choose mostly girls that thought they are 10's but in reality a 5? Of course this would be their attitude. Is this video about how safe KL is or about the self entitled/important attitude of this generation coming up? I visit KL whenever I can and I ❤it like a second home. I know it's safer than most countries. So, I won't stay quiet if I see these BS attitudes. I feel the solution is very simple - DON'T KEEP COMING BACK!
as a local, i also feels KL is no longer as safe as before. indeed. so many immigrant that work as labour here. sometime, theirs stairs make us feel this is not typical malaysia, awkward.

Anyway, a lot people keep commenting if its local men or overseas men stares, eventhough the statisic maybe more on oversea men but local men are normal human as well so its normal they will stare too. Local men that has less fulfilling days/life is also normal to stare just like when you are full after a meal, you less likely to look/stare/shop for more food than when you are hungry.
Yea I thought that was funny lol. I also think the women mostly don’t care too much which country the man is from, since overall they will just equate that with Malaysia. It’s unfortunate but overall it means the government needs to pay close attention to this as not to give the wrong image for those people visiting.
For those women saying Malaysia is not safe for women travellers, maybe I can recommend India. Those men staring at you are not malaysian but foreign Indians or foreign workers from Bangladesh, Myanmar or Indonesia.

I believe your interviews are fair and important for the Malaysian authorities to improve on various issues. One of it would be safety. I do believe that real Malaysians don't really stare at foreigners. Usually the migrants might stare a fair bit, usually the people sleeping on the streets aren't Malaysians, usually.
A lot of the comments here were off-point. The question was about whether Malaysia was/felt safe or not. It wasn't about Malaysians.

For the girl in the red dress, as local, why on earth do we want to take photos with you? We have enough chinese, if i want a photo with amoi, i just take it with my colleague. 😂
For the most part, a foreign female here doesn’t care so much if it’s a migrant or a local staring aggressively or asking for photos etc. it’s still gonna give them the same uncomfortable feeling. I think it’s up to the government at that point to prevent this kind of thing, although that’s not easy I suppose

Yes it is 😊 if you’re in bigger cities like Buenos Aires or Rosario you need to be careful around some areas, but just like you’d do in Barcelona or Paris. The rest of the country is pretty good to be honest, I highly recommend it
