Meniscus procedures like this are probably the least concerning knee issue to be honest. I have my right knee done 4 times and left knee once. Luckily for me all of my issues strictly meniscus. I get concerned when there are ligaments and/or tendons involved. They can clean up aka trim and smooth fraying or minor tears and flaps on the meniscus with high success rates and short recovery times. Ligaments and tendons that are injured and surgically repaired never are the same even when fully healed. I would rather break a bone then have ligaments surgically repaired. I honestly think that repetitive cleanups like I have had may have very different root causes that if caught early enough can be easily addressed especially for professional athletes. I think one of the root causes for me has to do with flexibility in areas like my hips, hip flexors, calves, etc which impact body mechanics which over time results in higher stress on joints and muscles. Flexibility also can make you more susceptible to injuries if you fall or land awkwardly from contact during a game.

The pressure to come back quicker will effect this type of injury. Further degradation occurs if you do not properly strengthen the surrounding leg muscles during rehab. The severity of the injury ie larger/smaller pieces of cartidlige, determine how invasive of a procedure the knee arthroscopy is.
I’m a d1 female basketball player, and have been dealing with continuous lateral joint area knee pain (12 months). I’ve tried rest, extensive physical therapy, HA injection, and two PRP injections with little to no improvement. It’s gotten to the point where my performance is very impacted. Well done as always doctor. Very informative. When I heard "routine" cleanup surgery on the knee I got concerned as well. Hopefully Giannis can have a long healthy career as he's a great talent and a great person.
I was scheduled for meniscectomy in January this year... my gut feeling was the same, if the doctor goes in there is to shave the meniscus as if it's not a big deal. After a break and cold plunges, the pain went away, I started training with elastic bands, recovered my knee muscles balance and then added cycling and rollerblading to train the knee from different angles. My problems went away with no surgery.
When I was younger I asked my sports medicines doctor if I could get surgery for my knee that's been hurting me since my early 20s due to multiple injuries. And I was told "if you aren't making millions as a pro, don't get cleanup surgery because you're trading off your long term knee heath for short term performance. So unless it's for a living, the best thing is just to grin and bear it and keep playing amateur level basketball on your sore knee. You'll have much less pain in the long term. Surgery will only give you maybe 5 good years before you're worse off than before having it."
That kinda sucks. My knees are the same way and I'd love to continue to play basketball without pain. Hopefully one day we'll find a way to fix the cartilage with no long term issues.
@@AllDay3004 Mine is tendon damage rather than cartilage so it's hard to say generically - but the pain _mostly_ went away on its own after like 20+ yrs. Sure, I jump like Jokic now, but otherwise I have no problems getting up and down the court, positioning for rebounds, setting quick screens, making good passes, hook shots, fadeaways, etc. Doc told me to just stay active and keep icing the knee down nightly. Aside from my trauma surgery that was medically necessary - every "cleanup" procedure afterward left me worse off, with more pain, more problems, worse cartilage problems, and most of all really painful deep scar tissue. Only thing that's helped it has been the saving grace of regenerative medicine - like prolotherapy, PRP and some of the various nerve procedures, as well as some of the off-shoots that are offered to reduce scar tissue, inflammation, help heal soft tissue damage, and so on. I went from not being able to walk for a long time to having several of my joints function again. I think one day we won't cut for everything, because at best people are healthy and can handle it, but for some of us, it's a devastating thing that can take decades to undo the damage of what we once thought was a good idea and no big deal. I'm especially grateful that I had a surgeon who recognized I was too young and not a good candidate for joint replacement because that's what they were pushing for, and now I know that is something that I wouldn't have had a prayer of a good outcome with.
Different from what I understood "cleanout" procedures to be. I've always thought of them as being an attempt to flush out floating debris. I'm scheduled for TKR in 2 weeks. I had my 1st arthroscopy at 20 and a follow up at 50. I would suggest that you don't touch the meniscus as it only gets worse over time. I wish I had known this when I was 20.
Rumour is in Greece there's no knee injury in general and it's all pr bs because Giannis doesn't want to join the national team. It's also been used as an excuse before and when the basketball federation asked for his tests the bucks refused to send them. It was a big controversy back then. Also giannis this summer is pushing some of his commercial deals and is doing tours to promote them.
Going into the knee or back is never minor. Going into the body period isn't ever minor. The thing that bothered me was they called it "routine". I don't think they know what routine means. And if it is truly routine that's an issue. Is this something he's been getting done? Is he going to be doing this every other summer for the rest of his career?
Hey Doc, can you please do the bellator 292 fight with Michael venom page vs Goiti Yamauchi and the kick to the knee!? I'd be very interested to know how that happened. Enjoy the content
I had knee arthroscopy to shave a a little flap on my upper condyle. Was persuaded by the "minor" surgery sales pitch. Knee has never been the same since. I'm in my 30s but my knee joint feels like it's 100 years old. Captain crunch over here 😅
I've had ACL replacement in both knees. One at 40 and the other near 60. They're not for sissies. The second when I was older the doctor said, "we don't do ACL surgery on someone your age". I was like, well ok but I'm still very active. Still ski at a high level and race dirt bikes. He was like, "let's do PT and let the medial collateral heal, then we'll see where you are". After seven weeks of PT and a letter from my physical therapist(have no idea what he wrote), the doc comes in and says..."So, when do you want to do this ACL"?
If you’ve had pain in your kneecap from a hyperextension(mri negative) that’s stopped u from being active would u opt for a surgery like this(25 yr old)? Tried Physical therapy and seems like exhausted every option. Just want to be able to play sports again
If it’s just patellofemoral pain syndrome you might benefit from controlled weight training slowly ramping up to things you’re comfortable with. I also had a hyperextension injury with PFPS but I went back to my orthopedic and found I had Posterolateral instability that I needed surgery on
Probably a combination of prophilaxys, better body mechanics and a meniscal repair if after all that the meniscus still manages to tear. For example derrick rose wouldnt have had to stop his peak performance so abruptly if he had cared about his landing mechanics
@heox123 you can have great mechanics but when you're cutting and exploding trying to guard your man it won't help. You're going to mess up your cartilage. I agree with the meniscus they can probably repair it more than trim it down. Unless it's a bucket tear of the meniscus, they have to shave it down.

What about removing scar tissue if you are prone to grow more than normal. After recovering from surgery. Would that be the same to removing cartilage?
Hello Doc! Do you believe symptoms around the knee such as soreness or pain (caused by injury) can be treated with non-surgical interventions? For example shockwaves (ESWT) or PRP injections?
What about "knee degrading procedure"? The point is that the knee is a consumable in the sport of basketball. Teams should pay athletes for each micrometer of shaved stuff in their knees.
We dont hear about the knee micro fracture surgery anymore. Guess that surgery was a failure. Need a video on that. Pretty sure those limited and ended Amare's career. Also do you do video's on baseball players injuries, like their throwing shoulder.
I don’t remember which video it was, but there’s one where he actually does talk about those microfracture surgeries, and he goes pretty in depth - to give you the overall gist of what he said, those surgeries ultimately proved to be largely ineffective and often caused more problems than they solved (so in other words, ‘that surgery was a failure’, just as you guessed).
The language used by doctors can be indeed very deceiving for all us normies who do not have deep medical knowledge. My doctor told me, “You have a torn acl but yet your knee is a healthy knee”. The context there being that usually the meniscus usually also receives a lot of damage during a wrestling related knee injury, yet I was kind of lucky to avoid it.

@@j.rjunior5584 "Dead doctors don't lie". The author's angle is, however an expensive vitamin line including liquid colloidal minerals. (Glacial milk) The gelatin worked though, the rest I never tried. I wasn't looking at wanting to live to 103- or more. Just wanted quality of life.
Good luck.
Knowing Giannis he will probably keep playing at 100% speed and intensity until he's in a wheelchair.
Same😢
Can you do a video on Mike Trout’s hand injury please
Thanks, doc! Have had cartilage transplants and many issues resulting from pretty sever osteochondritis. That traumatic arthritis is real
I had arthroscopies on both knees. They were never the same afterwards. Hope its not the same for Giannis.
Did you remove meniscus, loose bodies? Do you get knee pain?
@@jalenmcintyre1660 actually i had meniscus stapled back together and yeah my knees hurt and are no good.
@@jalenmcintyre1660 stapled with dissolving metal pin things.
@@razzaus1570 how do you cope in life? I have removed loose bodies and meniscus. Do you just try to be active with gym and cycling and then manage the pain? Wishing you all the best
@@jalenmcintyre1660 honestly i dont work out at all i gave up sports and stuff with the knee injuries.
Can you do a video on mike trouts hand surgery he had recently?
These NBA players are just tough man. I went a surgery in my knees a long time ago because of foolish running. It took a year to fully recover from that injury. I know that I can run again and can play basketball and stuff but there's that mental thing in my mind that if I do too much, it might happen again. Thinking about it again gives me goosebumps.
I'm scheduled for TKR in 2 weeks. I had my 1st arthroscopy at 20 and a follow up at 50. I would suggest that you don't touch the meniscus as it only gets worse over time. I wish I had known this when I was 20.
Had a lateral menisectomy at 16 and I have arthritis at 24
I'd like to see a video like this on Lonzo or Kawhi.
What's the alternative to cleaning when pain comes too often? Infiltrations?
Rumour is in Greece there's no knee injury in general and it's all pr bs because Giannis doesn't want to join the national team. It's also been used as an excuse before and when the basketball federation asked for his tests the bucks refused to send them. It was a big controversy back then. Also giannis this summer is pushing some of his commercial deals and is doing tours to promote them.
Excellent video!!!
Informative and entertaining.
See you in the next one!!
Can you make a video about the problems of Dwyane Wades knee when he was playing
Giannis about to become Hakeem The Dream 2.0 !
Work on that Dream Shake G.A. You gonna be alright keep workin’
Wont happen
Going into the knee or back is never minor. Going into the body period isn't ever minor. The thing that bothered me was they called it "routine". I don't think they know what routine means. And if it is truly routine that's an issue. Is this something he's been getting done? Is he going to be doing this every other summer for the rest of his career?
Hey Doc, can you please do the bellator 292 fight with Michael venom page vs Goiti Yamauchi and the kick to the knee!? I'd be very interested to know how that happened. Enjoy the content
everytime you open kneecap to do anything its REALLY BAD. 2 arthroscopies and knee was never the same first or second time.
I had knee arthroscopy to shave a a little flap on my upper condyle. Was persuaded by the "minor" surgery sales pitch. Knee has never been the same since. I'm in my 30s but my knee joint feels like it's 100 years old. Captain crunch over here 😅
Doc, make a video explaining what Curry’s doctors did right regarding his ankles.
I've had ACL replacement in both knees. One at 40 and the other near 60. They're not for sissies.
The second when I was older the doctor said, "we don't do ACL
surgery on someone your age".
Have doctors come up with an effective meniscus replacement yet? Most knee problems seem to be meniscus related
let me know lol
So essentially when the small flaps of cartilage are taken out, there is a loss in short term pain?
It could just be a fat pad removal. I had that 5weeks ago and their was no cartilage removed just fat that was poking my acl
I also had a hyperextension injury with PFPS but I went back to my orthopedic and found I had Posterolateral instability that I needed surgery on
So what is the alternative to these procedures?
Probably a combination of prophilaxys, better body mechanics and a meniscal repair if after all that the meniscus still manages to tear. For example derrick rose wouldnt have had to stop his peak performance so abruptly if he had cared about his landing mechanics
@heox123 you can have great mechanics but when you're cutting and exploding trying to guard your man it won't help. You're going to mess up your cartilage. I agree with the meniscus they can probably repair it more than trim it down. Unless it's a bucket tear of the meniscus, they have to shave it down.
Would load management and decreasing his minutes per game help? Thank you as always. Keep up the great job.✌🏿🙏🙌🤗
Couple years ago Kyrie did cleanup on his knee & removed the wire too. Wonder what that was about..
Hi Brian,
Any books you could recommend?
The same with Paul George's recent injury?
Is this the same knee that was injured a few years ago?
Arthritis always sounded so trivial until I got it. Take it from me, it's no joke.
As the owner of a merely pre-arthritic left knee, I can confirm this.
you got an xray to know if you have arthritis?
What we can learn from the Newspaper written in GREEK LETTERS (at least the headline) is Jack Sh..
Mj Kobe VC dwade all slashers who changed their style later in their career Giannis has to adapt his game to get better at midrange at least father time always wins and your athleticism won't last forever
What about removing scar tissue if you are prone to grow more than normal. After recovering from surgery. Would that be the same to removing cartilage?
he was recently seen on the court coaching in china doing dribble moves moving like normal no cast or nothing im sure it was minor and he is fine!
No professional escapes wear and tear.
especially for the taller players
Doc, any inside info on where that skeleton behind you will be traded to?
I just had a knee arthroscopy to remove two loose bodies this video lowkey spooked me
Giannis playing last summer after winning a ring ruined his knee for sure not getting rest is just asking for problem
Hello Doc! Do you believe symptoms around the knee such as soreness or pain (caused by injury) can be treated with non-surgical interventions? For example shockwaves (ESWT) or PRP injections?
Great info and vid Doc!
He definitely shouldn’t play in the FIBA this year and simply work on his post game and jumper
Thank you
Ask Brandon Roy about this…Todd Gurley…Terrell Davis…the list is very long.
Doc can you talk about Lonzo ball situation??
Is anyone else hearing a subtle cracking sound in the video?, I hope it's just me or that at least it can be solved soon
More jump shots, less dunking. When the athleticism fades, so will he. Take pages from Tim Duncan...or grind your knees to Dust by 32.
What about "knee degrading procedure"? The point is that the knee is a consumable in the sport of basketball. Teams should pay athletes for each micrometer of shaved stuff in their knees.
The Doug demuro time stamps😂😂😂 good one
1:03 I believe Giannis has had a chronic knee for a while now
But, I mean, but he was in China doing commercials 5 days ago.. with this brothers, even did some performances 😮
New subscriber 💯
Hey doc by daily running in future I may suffer from cartilage loss plz answer
why'd you remove Lonzo from the thumbnail?
Liked before I even saw the video. Thank you! They need to change this narrative spinning.
Lmnt should change their logo because it looks almost the same as dazn logo, so they wouldn’t get sued.
Shortened Gilbert Arena's career as well.
Please interpret “knee cleanup” the same as “car cleanup” or “pc cleanup” 😂
Do you think his hyperextension a couple years ago has any causation on his knee problems today?
Great point/question.
What about plasma injections to knee cartilage?
Good for pain but doesn’t do anything to ‘fix’ or change the cartilage
@@BrianSuttererMD is it better to try strengthening knee before deciding for plasma injections or just get them now and continue working your knee.
Oh no 🙈 Gianni’s gonna have a hard time after season 15 if true
My understanding is that vit C, vit K2, Boron (also D3 & Magnesium) are good for cartilage (& bone) growth.
thank u
Drinking game: Take a shot every time Dr. Sutterer does air quotes in this video 🤭
Once you start, it always gets worse. RIP knees and joints
Interesting one of the people who owns the bucks sold his share of team around the time of the surgery.
People need to start going the Tim Duncan route. Play minimal basketball in your youth and swim for the other sport.
swimming has the lowest impact on your joints
