here is an anecdote - if I am lactose intolerant I'll keep telling everyone to stop drinking milk. If I am gluten intolerant, I'll say - hey, I went to no-gluten diet and it did wonders to me and "hundreds of other people", therefore all people on Earth should not be eating gluten... or shellfish... or peanuts, or whatever other intolerance I might have... This is why scientists came up with the idea of randomized studies

When I mentioned negative side effects, all the low brow “you don’t work out enough” and “soy boy” shit got thrown around. I still eat quite a bit of meat, but have switched back to eating a salad several times a week, and way more vegetables and feel 10x better. I feel balanced, with more natural focus and higher energy. I started playing basketball in the gym again, which I couldn’t do for years. A bit of context about the pig study that is referred to here. First, in the study we fed pigs 600 g per day of raw broccoli and at the end of feeding period the pigs weighed approximately 40 kg, which even with allometric scaling is well outside of the range of normal human intake, but proportionally less broccoli than some other animal studies have used. As such, our results need to be treated with caution and not just extrapolated to humans. Second, when the broccoli was blanched the genotoxic effect seemed to pretty much disappear and most broccoli is consumed by humans after cooking. What is probably not widely understood is that isothiocyanates (and indoles) are produced from other compounds in broccoli that are called glucosinolates. When broccoli is eaten raw, these glucosinolates seem to be broken down mainly to nitriles rather than isothiocyanates or indoles. So, eating raw broccoli probably releases more nitriles than isothiocyanates. Arguably lightly steaming broccoli would be the best preparation method to reduce nitrile formation and promote isothiocyanate (for example sulforaphane) production, should that be the aim. We did conduct another study (unpublished) were we observed a similar genotoxic effect of raw broccoli but not raw carrots so at face value eating 600 g a day of raw broccoli might not be a good idea if you are a 40 kg pig, but I doubt any human eats similar amounts; 'the dose makes the poison' and the model system also needs considering. Plant phytochemicals tend to exhibit hormetic effects where low to moderate intakes may stimulate beneficial effects (albeit often through causing a small increase in oxidative stress that turns on protective enzymes inside of cells), but larger doses may be toxic. There are other reports of genotoxic and mutagenic effects of various broccoli derived glucosinolates and their breakdown products (e.g. isothiocyanates) in cell systems and animal models, which throw up some interesting questions, but to my knowledge (although I don't work on broccoli anymore) there is little human data to indicate normal intakes of broccoli are problematic and indeed some evidence albeit largely from observational epidemiological studies that moderate consumption of broccoli is associated with health benefits. Although in people with some bowel issues there could be a medical rationale for adjusting fibre intake, but that would not just be focused on broccoli.

Hey, Ph.D. scientist with 3 autoimmune diseases here (thus the handle I use). I got plenty of issues like he describes: inflammation problems, gut problems, blood sugar problems. Really landed the trifecta. You know what has never made those issues worse, ever?
    Kale.
    Broccoli.
    Brussel sprouts.
Literally any of the Brassicas, which I eat routinely. Guess my n=1 worthless damn anecdote cancels out one of his worthless anecdotes!

    • @TorreBorre3000
      @TorreBorre3000 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Well that doesn't prove anything lol Are you a Ph.D scientist and you reason like this? What do you have a Ph.D in? Have you cut out these from your diet for several weeks/months by doing a very standard elimination diet? Plenty of people have lost their autoimmune issues from eliminating one of almost every food on the planet, while millions of people are thriving on the exact same foods, both broccolli and red meat are two examples of this. It could be the actual red meat, or like with my little brother it could depend on what the actual cow has eaten before it died. He can only eat grass fed meat.
(I'm not saying paul was wrong or misleading in his original video, he made it sound like broccoli is bad for everyone and it's clearly not. However saying broccoli is good for everyone is not correct either, if you're having issues what he mentions could potentially be why some people get flare ups from broccoli and is worth looking into more.)

L take. Diet has a profound impact on all facets of our lives. As a doctor who practices clinical medicine whether it be general or psychiatric, it is their responsibility to treat illness and get at the root cause and not simply prescribe symptomatic suppressants. Unfortunately that is the most common practice in the western medicinal paradigm.
If you think diet has no impact on psychiatric health, then you are a fool who has studied little and probably shouldn't be commenting on the matter, as is apparent by your OP.

I tried Paul Saladino’s diet and mimicked it as much as I could. I actually lost some weight (not my goal; been an lean athlete all my life, 5’11, 155 pounds ish) and I think some of that was muscle; I also had horrible constipation that did not go away until I reintegrated veggies, grains, legumes, and nuts back to my diet. I felt very hungry most of the time despite eating tons of steak and ground beef. Layne helped me see through the bs a lot through videos like these. Can’t thank you enough! I still don't know how these people maintain the plant-only and the meat-only diets, tried those out of curiosity and felt like shit in both occasions, a balanced diet taking care of the macros is the only way I truly started to feel alive mind you, after years of eating junk. • @TasteOfButterflies

A person on a plant-only diet would still be having protein, fat, and carbs. They aren't excluding any macros or food groups ("meat" is not a food group btw; it's part of the "protein foods" food group, which also includes nuts, tofu etc). A plant diet isn't automatically low-fat or low-protein or low-anything. So it isn't valid to compare it to a zero-carb zero-vegetable all meat diet.

I think that's a little patronizing. Many people do experience health changes from dietary changes. And I think there is often a good reason for it. As others mentioned before I think it is often due to adding more whole foods in the diet. Another thing is that if you're adding a food group that you've neglected in the past you might be addressing some nutrient deficiencies. e.g if you add dairy to your diet, you're gonna get more calcium, more beef you might get more zinc, more veg you might get more magnesium plus all kinds of vitamin deficiencies. And in fact there's probably a lot more people with marginal deficiencies than you'd expect. Look into the ones I mentioned previously, zinc, magnesium and calcium.
Also in my experience in poor health people struggle with a lot of foods and have negative reactions to certain food groups, and so cutting them out can lead to temporary improvements. But in the long-term you probably want to be able to incorporate most foods and have a healthy digestion and immune system that can tolerate most foods. Overly restrictive diets often make the problem worse in the long-term because it just makes it harder to get all the micronutrients you need.

My chronic pain due to a spinal injury and fibromyalgia have eased a a lot.
I exhausted all medical options for my conditions, cold plunge, hot plunge and sauna have helped a great deal. The spinal cord stimulator was a failure as was radio frequency, cortisone etc etc. the endocrinologist was useless and wouldn’t put me on TRT or HRT so I experimented myself. I’m completely off opiates, I was on extremely high doses especially morphine. Now I use certain foods for pain relief, I exercise, I use nandrolone for pain relief also, and testosterone helps greatly. This is the danger that, in trying that trick, or believing it might "be working", due to placebo effect or wishful thinking or psychosomatic response, a person might delay medical care that would uncover the actual cause of their symptoms. What if their "gut issues" are due to colon cancer? What if their "fatigue" is due to leukemia?

This literally happened to my mother in a way. She was told by alternative medicine charlatans that drinking “bone broth” would cure everything. Anyway, she died of breast cancer because she refused to go to a doctor lol.

This was ChatGPT’s anecdote on the carnivore diet improving its life
Sure! Since adopting the carnivore diet, I've experienced a remarkable boost in energy and mental clarity. Embracing a diet focused on animal products has not only improved my physical well-being but has also transformed my approach to food. The simplicity of the carnivore lifestyle has brought about a sense of balance and vitality that I hadn't anticipated, making each day a more energized and fulfilling experience.
I bet I could probably get a few million more of these, but Im convinced

As a dietitian here's my concern:
    - what clinical GI training and scope of practice does he work within?
    - what medical investigations does he get his patients to do before diving into restrictive dieting?
    - does he screen his patients for eating disorders?
    - does he consider the biopsychosocial picture and therefore psychological drivers of GI issues.
    - what elimination diet (of which there are a few that are actually evidence based, carnivore is not one of them lol) does he use? Does he challenge specific compounds to avoid long term restrictive dieting (all elimination diets are the first of three phases).
Paul should be using a multidisciplinary team for clients who present with global/GI issues. His business model is fear based and he no doubt creates more disordered eating than issues fixed.

He's a psychiatrist who doesn't even practice, he just sells supplements and books about a diet he no longer follows himself because it caused him serious health problems. He's a con artist, not a doctor.

100% man, you'll find those kind of comments on every health channel's comment section. Anything from fruitarian to carnivore, it's the same and it goes to the influencers head, like with Paul. They think they're helping and healing all these people and they live inside this echo chamber. It's having a polarising effect, as highlighted in the Social Dilemma documentary.

Eat what works for you, cut out what doesn’t. As someone who has an autoimmune disease and have struggled for years with it I could never be a carnivore even if it makes me feel 100 percent better I love veggies and since I have one life to live I’ll have my broccoli and have some aches and pains in the morning
