    Hey Layne. I watched your interview with Rich Roll and toward the end you said that being in this line of work can be frustrating because there can be this sense that you're not making a difference. Well about 10 years ago I emailed you and told you that I was just dumped by my girlfriend, was like 80lbs overweight and a drunk. I told you that I was going to start to rebuild my life with everything you taught about diet and fitness and use that as a bedrock to turn my life around. Well now im jacked, got her back, have two kids, I'm sober and financially successful and stable. Obviously there was a lot more to it than that but you were the inflection point and my point of reference for a long time while I was struggling to keep grounded.
    You made a difference to me man. The whole difference.

      @@ThatGuy2428 Why would you want to maximize protein? Could you please provide any reason why the average person needs more than 1.2 g/kg of protein; or over 1.6 g/kg if your a typical weightlifter trying to gain muscle ASAP. Even Brad Schoenfeld, a leading expert on bodybuilding and protein consumption says you're not going to get any significant muscle growth by consumer over 1.6 g/kg. A person can easily build or maintain muscle with 1.2 g/kg. So your answer can not be to build muscle, because the research is clear.
      The only reason is that protein is a money maker; fiber is not.
      Also, I don't know what moderation is. That's more nonsense to get people to buy junk food.

    Bodybuilders, before the age of rampant performance enhancing drug (PED) use, ate large amounts of protein and had perfectly normal longevity rates. Lifespans for bodybuilders only started to decrease after PED usage increased in dosage. This demonstrates that as long as one has healthy kidneys, a large quantities of protein is not deleterious.

      I honestly doubt that vegans were the target audience. Even Dr Nagra ripped this article apart by showing that, no matter the source, higher protein intake increases longevity. Though, plant protein seems to increase it more, but this can have many reasons that have nothing to do with protein metabolism, like higher intake of fibers, less saturated fats etcetera.

    I’m a Whole Foods plant based athlete and the issue that I have with the PB docs saying we need to eat RDAs of protein for longevity and cancer prevention is that it’s just not pragmatically possible.
    I need 3000 to 3400 calories a day. If I eat that from whole plant foods I double the RDA without even trying. That’s not with added powders or fake meat or even high amounts of soy or beans. It’s just too easy to get protein from Whole Foods. Everything has it and it adds up.
    The problem is that Dr Gregor says it’s not restriction it’s just going to recommends levels. Those levels are pathetically low though. So it IS about calories/protein restriction.
    The lighter you are the less protein you need. So even if you’re scrawny and could get by on 1700 calories a day you would still be getting the RDA for a muscular man weighing 75 kilos. And if you’re thriving in 1700 calories then you are not a muscular man weighing 75 kilos.
    The math doesn’t work in reality. You would have to either eat non Whole Foods (a lot of dextrose or something) and/or you would have to me insanely sedentary to reduce caloric needs.
    None of this is healthy. So I will continue to do what I’ve always done. Which is eat enough calories to fuel my healthy athletic lifestyle and assume the docs are wrong with thier crazy low protein recommendations.
    Again, they aren’t saying we only need 60grams a day. They are saying going above that will give you cancer. Hard to believe.

    Read the Antonio et al reference you cited and it does not show high protein diet is safe or healthy…it was an 8 week study in college aged participants measuring body composition…so this RCT has a pretty low strength of evidence when it comes to health/disease.

    America is not obese because of eating lean chicken, fish, beef in excess. What obese person says “I got fat because I was eating too much grilled chicken breast.” None. It is because of the overconsumption of fat and carbs. It simply doesn’t make sense. People would be way healthier if they ate more lean protein and limited saturated fats and didn’t over eat carbs. It’s important how Layne pointed out that the overall consumption of calories has increased, meaning that protein along with fats and carbs have increased and this article is simply picking out the protein for the authors agenda.

      100 %. And you can really see that the reason for demonizing protein is that people in the US get most of it from animal products and i dunno, i guess they wanna ”shock” people to be more ethical and sustainable, but that doesn’t happen with the fear mongering. This exact article could’ve been written about saturated fat or carbs as you mentioned.

    Yeah, protein or calorie intake in the last 110yrs hasn't really gone up in the US. Has been some deviations, but pretty stable. Quite a few have been eating too much protein the whole time. It would appear eating too much of anything is not good for you. Adjusting for height differences, protein and calories would be down compared to 110yrs ago. I guess usage of protein and calories is down more, so protein intake is up, on what we need. Protein is too expensive to be eating too much to be just pissing it up against the wall.

    I was waiting for this! Especially lately that an Amletic question came to mind. If a person lets say was eating 1.5 grams of protein for kg body weight per day, and by doing so lost a ton of weight, does have now to start consuming less protein because of the lower body weight? But then why this person should eat less protein that are satiating and delicious and end up eating more carbs and fat to make up for it? Or should that person eat less all together because now weight less? My thought is I would definitely keep eating the same even if now protein looks like a lot compared to body weight, but I was curious about the science stand on this. Comments welcomed.

      @Melesniannon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you lose weight your body will find a new caloric balance. If you eat less altogether you'll start losing weight again, so when your body reaches a new balance or sooner if you notice the weight loss falling off, and you are not at your weight goal, adjust your caloric intake down as needed. If you don't make the adjustment you'll stop losing weight eventually, and if you're happy with that weight you need not change it.
      Just keep in mind it's nearly always easier to add a bit to your consumption than it is to reduce further so if you can maintain it I'd recommend lowering your intake to maintain your weight loss rate until you've reached your weight goal. At that point you're probably still eating less than what you need to maintain that weight, so start adding a little more calories until you find your new balance at your desired weight. This might take some time as I'd recommend incremental small increases until you notice you at least stop losing weight so you may be tweaking for a bit.
      If you're satisfied with your protein intake with that diet you need not change it, as long as you maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Note that "healthy and balanced" can very well be a high-protein diet, just don't sacrifice something like fiber or other necessary (micro)nutrients for the sake of protein.

      Thank you for the reply! The question was a bit different and it was more about the protein adjustment after a weight loss (wich I believe there is no need for) rather then a strategy for more weight loss or mantaince. I do agree with your vision, I am a certified dietician and I have my approach to diet that works like magic with all my clients thanks god. I was just wandering from a health prospective if it's ok to keep same amount of daily protein after a substantial weight loss or if could create problems in the long run (not from a weight perspective but rather for general health)

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Caferramarta There doesn't seem to be any evidence that it does. Of course you'll see diminishing returns on your protein intake and you could (and probably should as a dietician) consider what the protein in your diet is actually for, and if it shouldn't make some room for other important nutrients.
      You could, for example, consider that there doesn't seem to be that much of a diminishing return on fiber intake so once you lose weight you could reduce the grams of protein in the diet to make room for fiber. That's just one thought, I'm sure there are other options.
      Mathematically speaking, if you eat less, but eat the same amount of protein, you're eating less of other things instead. I think that ought to be your main consideration when considering reducing the protein in your diet, the guideline is per kg of bodyweight for a reason. As you probably well know, diets are complete pictures, not a single macronutrient so even if you don't "need to" you may still "want to".

Knowledge & understanding meet with confusion/bias always ends with "give sources" while avoiding to prove their own sources. It's a big nothing burger. Yeah idk, i think there are some legitimate concerns about high animal protein diets with cancer and high cholesterol. I don't think layne addressed that in this clip. He just talked about the benefits of protein for lbm and muscle growth. Great, that is a well understood benefit of protein. That doesn't address the cancer and heart health concerns of eating too much protein which are legit. I know china study is often dismissed but there are a lot of links to cancer with igf1 and animal protein - layne would love to hear you address those concerns more head on

      The problem is now the plant based guys are saying even vegans need to get down to RDA. Getting down to RDA is basically impossible unless you restrict calories or eat isolated sources of carbs. Neither of those seems healthy. I’m Whole Foods plant based and double the RDA without even trying.
      There’s a difference between what they used to say about animal protein and what dr. Gregor is saying now, which includes plant sources too.

      I've heard Norton allude to this elsewhere and he mentions something similar in the front end of this video. Namely, its that the RDA nitrogen tests were done with the idea of establishing the "minimum" amount of protein, not about developing guidelines for an optimum (or "healthy" - however that would be defined) amount. Of course, the RDA is not viable if you have the goal of optimally building new muscle tissue, but that is a more narrow concern.
