I alone have solved this issue. My blood glucose never spikes because I never go more than 30 minutes between cookies. Ever since I started spacing out my 4 dozen cookies a day, I've become so much healthier! Mechanistic boogeymen. It all sounds the damn same. Once you learn the sound of it you'll hear it everywhere. These people don't want to talk outcomes because they don't review any data in the first place. They learn 3-5 physiologic processes via YT video and figure they've arrived at novel ideas based on that.
My fave part of this vid was the closing statements: awareness and personal responsibility are big factors in this journey. Thank your for your awesome videos 🙌🏽🙏🏼
That's one if your best WTFs ever. I've read Glucose Goddess's book and found it useful in many ways. I thought the book gave some solid information overall. But it is also good to get a retort from you to put some nuance into perspective.
Not to support this lady, because I straight up think she's a waste of space, but the savoury breakfast thing really works for me, something I've noticed that in last couple of years. I have eggs+veggies+tuna/chicken and I do way better throughout the day when compared to fruit+grains+yogurt, calories being equated. Even with high protein yogurt and casein thrown in the mix. So I've been favouring savoury breakfasts during the week, and do pancakes on Saturday because I'm not a monster.
Savory breakfast is likely the breakfast choice most cuisines on earth. Breakfast won't be sugary unless it's bunch of processed garbage with no nutritional value anyway. In america majority of foods are sugar spiked for no reason
Yeah not sure why Layne is getting so worked up about this. I mean I get it, he loves his studies, but protein and fat do take a lot longer to digest than carbs.
I'm rather surprised this didn't start out with the best time to eat sugar being after vigorous exercise when glucose sinks are depleted in your muscles, and sugar would have the least insulin response.
It would have been better to react to that video then cherry pick her just explaining what to do, and not sourcing it. She DOES source her stuff, and it makes better sense than what Layne reduces it too. This video is honestly terrible. Glucose going up is not the same as a glucose spike.
I'm not really for or against most ($$$)youtubers, but yes they all talk a big game when it's all pre organised youtube video's and studies organised. There absolutely should be more debates. Lot's of these youtubers have vested businesses that would go down the drain if they lost debates I guess so that's probably 1 reason.

@davorzdralo8000 yes, just a week ago I saw a very respectful physicist make a video about flat earthers being wrong but not stupid, actually go ahead and type it on youtube "flat earthers are wrong but not stupid" What I mean acting like children? Oh i dont know, maybe something like asking rhetorical questions not out of curiosity but to irk? Yeah, maybe that example you just displayed is good enough for you to understand it.

Being obese may not be your fault, may have had to do with how you were brought up, decisions that you couldn't make because you didn't know any better while being a baby. But now, it is your responsibility, and that gives you power to decide.
Yeah I don't know how people doesn't realize that he's promoting eating junk food whenever you want, and that's really fucked up. Thanks to the Glucose Goddess and Robert Lustig I realized how much sugar I was embedding in my body, results: I could never spend long periods of time doing a demanding task, I felt exhausted all day, irritated, with itching all over my body, bad sleep. As soon as I put sugar aside and started eating healthier and natural carbohydrates, no junk food, all my symptoms have disappeared, every day I wake up in shock to see that I can go through the day without sleep, without needing to eat a snack every two hours, my sleeping time has been fixed, I can sleep 5 hours and feel energetic in the mornings. So I don't know what he's promoting, I don't understand it, his message is not clear, while the people he criticizes are clear in their messages and people comment on how their lives have changed like mine with specific examples.
I don't know who the interviewer is, but he reminds me of the hosts of many, many, MANY infomercials I've seen through the years...someone is on a "talk show" that just so happens to be selling a product, and the interviewer is very much helping sell that product during the "interview"... Curious.
I actually find Fat to be more "addicting" than sugar, like he said people see cookies donuts snicker bars as sugar, but they all have more fat calories, Its the fat that makes most food taste good sugar alone wont do it
Wow man, you make it sound so easy! I guess that’s why Americans are so healthy; not overweight or suffering from diabetes at all! No need to worry about sugar, eat whatever [your personal dietitian] you want! Seriously though, thanks for the advice to…eat less…
I totally agree with you about the pseudo sciencey language they’re using but honestly that thing they’re talking about actually did happen to me. I used to go down to 50 glucose 90 min after breakfast and feel like shit, eating a “balanced sweet breakfast” including lots of fats… switched to eggs and avocado toast (Savory breakfast) I hardly ever go below 75-80 after breakfast anymore (don’t remember the last time it happened) … it was kinda life changing to experience this. Maybe it’s an individual thing.
Addiction is something like being overly consumed in a habit, doesnt matter if the habit is a good one, it becomes bad. You do want to drop or decrease bad habits and replace them with good ones, but if you are overly focused on one good habit, you are better to focus less on it and eat some sugar, if you dont eat sugar. Too much energy at one sitting is not good, but doesnt matter if you drop either a bit of fat or carb from that meal to drop energy intake, providing you are hitting all your daily essentials
Eating the exact same thing at breakfast or at 8pm gives me a totally different glucose spike. Really high in the morning and barely spiking in the evening
The fact that so many people think that the carbs are what’s bad about fast food in 2024 is crazy. For example the Bacon King from Burger King has 81 grams of fat and 58 from carbs. So it has 730 calories from fat and only 230 from carbs!
ii eat sugar at random times.....but there from fruits and artificial sugars.... still shredded with lots of muscle. never really have "craves"...Food is food to me. I think everybody is different. Its way more complex then how people explain it. I never really have "crashes"...ever....Unless i didn't get any sleep. but, thats normal.haha... Good stuff as always, Dr. Norton.
What always irks me about these claims about glucose spikes, insulin, blood sugar... it's never in context. Who is the subject? Who are we talking about? Would it be different for someone who regularly gets hours of aerobic exercise activity 4-5 times a week? What about for someone who sits at a desk 40 hours a week? Come on...
100% correct, but that brief spike although totally normal and dosen't cause cravings, does it cause the that post-meal exhaustion? or is that caused solely by metabolism ramping up to make use of the macro and micronutrients?
I've just started a new job at a gym and one of the other PTs swears by this creator after getting one of those stick on glucose checkers 🥲 his first intro to me was that he was science based... 🥴
Isn’t it better to eat sugar with other food? It nauseates me to eat something sugary on an empty stomach, but that doesn’t seem to be true of everyone
Funny shes says to not have carbs in the morning because there are handful of papers suggesting better insulin sensitivity in the morning. The big breakfast study is an example of biasing more calories for breakfast led to more weight loss vs more calories at night while keeping total daily calories the same. If im recalling correctly more evidence indicates this biasing of calories to breakfast isnt actually better for weight loss but hey theres a mechanism that flies in the face of her charlatanry
Occam's Razor is an axiom, no different in abstract form from a religious belief. I am not arguing against the use of Occam's Razor, as that choice is a valuation of the individual. I am simply pointing out that refusing to abide by Occam's Razor is not logically wrong. Occam's Razor is chosen by many scientists as a way to distinguish among competing hypotheses. It can be considered a way of axiomatically defining truth rather than as a way to identify truth.
Thank you 🥰 because I was really unfortunately kinda believing this woman ( her name is Jessie) because she is a biologist I thought she was more serious than others 😐😒
Honestly, this is a bad video. The vid you use is just her explaining the steps. Not much of the why. When she does explain the process in greater detail, it shows how far off the mark you are. And yes, the spike is a mountain compared to a mole hill when you eat carbs (like a muffin or cereal) right after a fast (break fast) which causes that spike...not just a rise, but a large SPIKE. That's why it's called a spike, not a rise in glucose. A SPIKE. If you eat a keto style breakfast, by lunch that food in the gut, acts as yellow traffic light for glucose digestion, which prevents higher spikes in glucose, which prevents higher spikes insulin, which prevents fast loss when it remains in a constant influx. That's what she is saying. How to lower the viscosity of the body's absorption of glucose because it cannot handle such large amounts coming into the cells at once. Proteins and fats act as a buffer to slow that ATP process down and not overwhelm the system, which has to use insulin to create fat cells to store all the glucose it cant process quickly enough. And also, yes carbs cause a greater, quicker response to ghrelin release than fats or protein. That's literally the addiction of eating too many carbs. People who have just eaten, being hungry, who know they dont need to eat, reacting to ghrelin and having no other possible response other than to eat to stop that feeling. Or maybe you know some way to increase leptin immediately without eating. Exercise? Yep, Gluclose goddess promotes this after eating. Calf raises, going for a work, get moving. She's right. It works.
As far as I know carbs are the best ghrelin suppresant. Do you have any citations that support your claims? If so please post them so I can educate myself
Eating a balanced meal and doing exercise works. Shocking discovery right there. Couldn't possibly be calories, nope. You're talking about all these mechanics that don't even need to be verified because there's no difference in outcomes depending on the style of consumption, so grifter goddess is simply wrong.
Dear Dr. Norton, wow! Again a banger! Thank you so much for your insights. Love the break down. I really don't get why she is still on podcast if she is clearly talking bs! God what holes do they always come out of? It's almost like >90% of the influencers that get a stage on podcasts and draw most attention completely lack proper scientific language, including nuance, context, real-life application for real people and so forth.
