I have to say I did follow Dr Berg with his keto advice and lost 15 kg in 3 months. I was very strict with myself and it worked. I was also tracking my calories, eating at my BMR. Because it worked I thought keto was the one and only.
But then after a while, I became a bit adventurous, thinking "well, let's try the other diets, even if I bounce back, i could just stop and get back to keto and so on."
So, I switched to higher carb and protein intake (coz I started working out too) and I didn't gain any of my weight back.
I think what keto did for me is it helped me avoid all the processed food and stuff… which in terms helped me control my calorie intake. I avoided instant noodle, bubble tea, sugar-loaded foods and so on. So I've come to the conclusion that to lose weight you just need to eat healthy and watch your calories.

I have hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease. I think it's a good idea to avoid gluten in my diet, because it can help alleviate some symptoms of Hashimoto’s. The research is mixed, but since I'm also trying to lose weight, I don't think avoiding gluten is a bad idea for me. Bread spikes my insulin levels, and I feel hungrier throughout that day when I eat it.

    • @Radjehuty
      @Radjehuty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It makes total sense to avoid a food based on a personal experience/sensitivity. If bread is spiking your insulin levels, that sounds like an issue much different from a gluten sensitivity. Bread itself is a pretty calorically-dense food and it tastes delicious. It makes sense why you'd feel hungrier if you happen to crave foods like this. The problem is that Dr. Berg is trying to make many many many logical leaps to say that all these symptoms are caused by gluten. It's a really unfortunate argument to make especially for people desperately searching for their healthy balance in life. If you feel genuinely better omitting bread, keep doing what you're doing.

While I agree with Dr. LE Norton in many empirical aspects, as a biomedical scientist I would not fully rely on scientific research, which is generally biased and typically difficult to extrapolate outside of the experimental setting (even the most "rigorous" meta-analyses). In addition, I would not disregard the observations obtained from a clinical setting, which are very often overlooked in scientific literature. We have to understand that Dr. EA Berg (I think he does not hold a PhD though) is heavily oriented to the clinical setting, while Dr. LE Norton is heavily oriented to the experimental setting. Both have their perspectives, which are useful, and also conflicts of interests (as almost any health professional). But I do not believe one invalidates the other. They should seek complementarity instead. The truth is that processed food consumption and carbohydrate overeating have contributed greatly to the increased prevalence of metabolic disease, including gastrointestinal disorders, fatty liver, attention deficits and addictions. On the other hand, dose and frequency make the poison. We have scientific literature that supports almost any claim you can think of, but I believe one, as a trained PhD, should be skeptical with oneself too, and consider what clinicians have to say and why they use the approach they do. The clinical setting is EXTREMELY different from the experimental setting, although they can help each other, instead of throwing fire at each other. I believe these two have quite different goals and that's where the clash comes in.
    In summary:
Eric Berg: mass speaker -> big audience -> most people are metabolically unhealthy who eat tons of bread everyday -> message has to be "bread is killing you". Goal: reduce or even eliminate bread consumption. This will presumably improve health, and I can agree on this line.
Layne Norton: specialist speaker -> much lower audience -> probably a very heterogeneous audience -> message has to be "bread has good and bad things". Goal: stay neutral about bread. This will just provide a counterbalance to a very skewed message, and I can also agree on this line.

Hello Layne, as a pizzaiolo aficionado, fermentation either through wild yeast, or commercial yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae), does not reduce the amount of protein in the dough like Dr. Berg said. But rather breaks down the carbs into more simple blocks. Making it easier to digest. And producing co2 after eating those carbs, and inflating the dough more. In fact, we need high proteins flours, to have more gluten, for more dough elasticity and more puff.

So eating well and studying the link between medicine and health has been part of my lifestyle, passion and studies.
I’ve been reading the “studies” that TH-cam docs like Dr. Berg and Carnivore MD and have called them out on all their BS. Your video is the first legitimate one I’ve seen that calls them out on their BS. Thank you for providing watchers with truth!! A Keto diet helped me shift my relationship to food - I was eating too much bread and not enough other beneficial foods. I did lose a lot of weight. But I gained all that back when I went off of it, and life long keto isn't sustainable - at least not for me. I'm on track to a more sustainable change of diet that involves long-term lifestyle change that allows me to also eat yummy foods in more moderation and without undermining my entire weight loss program. But I'm glad I found this channel, because I'm sick of the weird culty insanity in the fitness world that demands all-or-nothing dedication to a very restrictive lifestyle - often even more restrictive than most cults out there - to "lose weight" or "be fit" or whatever... Well as i went ketogenic i got to know how this intolerance towards gluten must feel like. I could start eating any carbs without problems. Bananas, Apples, Sugar, Oatmeal etc. But bread.... NO. Especially at that time as i was on a ketogenic diet eating wheat products ( especially those which were quite raw and heated less than other ) it did not feel good. Not at all. Just started to fell lousy about 15 minutes after eating. Bad mood, weird thoughts, difficulty concentrating, pictures not leaving my head, inner ( mental ) pain, feeling down, depressed. I had it several times and only with wheat- laden products. Again and again and again. But not being on keto it actually went away, or at least got much better.
So why especially on that keto- phase? I think because the high amounts of fat irritated my digestive tract. That is something i noticed after being keto for a long time. And an already inflamed gut does not seem to handle wheat products well. At least not for me.

      I'm hoping you're joking.
ONE slice of bread is 100 calories. You need about 2000c a day. THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE ONE.

    • @dondajulah4168
      @dondajulah4168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@GaryHighFruit dude, it is a phrase of speech with “one” not referring to a single slice of bread. It would also apply to grain based food items like pasta. And some people eat bread in roll form where the calories can be significantly more than 100 per “one”

@@dondajulah4168 My point stands tho. We're meant to eat a lot of carbs. I'm proof. I started a heavy carb diet in 1994.
      Typical day.
      4 oranges
      5 bananas
      10 servings of grain
      2 cans of beans
I often got hungry in middle of night and had 4 more bananas.
      I never got over-weight.
I still eat this way, but 40% less.
      Doing well.

When I first started my fitness journey I first stumbled into Eric Berg's channel and he was a great motivator to start but what actually helped me have a consistent healthy lifestyle are actually sensible and realistic guys like Layne Norton. My diet is now very varied between meat based and plant protein, complex carbs and healthy fats and that's much more sustainable for me.

Well fat provides the flavor and aroma for food, so people might end up eating more since fat makes food tastes better, thus bread is not the only trigger food. People can eat what they want as long as you do not go overboard.
Enough black and white thinking, test things for yourself, and strive to be active and healthy. Thanks for the video Dr. Layne, great content.

Exactly. One thing that's common among the low carb/high fat group is nuts being a trigger food. I dont know about everyone else, but I've put down nearly a pound of pistachios in a single day more than a few times.

So true. Who eats dry toast without generous amount of cream cheese or garlic butter on it ? I will not eat more than a slice . Grilled cheese makes me over eat GC sandwich , cheese makes me over eat pizza . Carbs by itself is not that interesting . White rice - how much can you eat without fat or protein hyping it up ?

I think bread is over consumed and people would rather eat it and leave out meat/veggies/fat which are all more satisfying and more nutrient dense . Majority of people don't have the will power or information to make their meals benefit their body.

I discovered you through the Huberman Lab Podcast. I'm trying to get myself back on track with my health. I've had people suggest Berg to me before so I'm really glad I found this video. The autism part just pissed me off so much. I have a 9 year old with autism. She was diagnosed pretty early in her life. I'm furious about that comment. People that simplify autism and create shame make me so angry.

The problem with this argument from Layne is that so many people benefit so incredibly from ditching bread. Joint pain goes away, allergy symptoms clear up, brain fog leaves, muscles don't hurt, etc etc. - Maybe it's the refined carbohydrates, pesticides, GMO hybridization of wheat, the gluten - I don’t know, but it's real. Layne is a little too sure of himself here.

Just wanted you to know, I was eating my protein waffles for breakfast while I watched this.( btw, I am down 53 lb since discovering Greg doucette's anabolic diet, which is full of bread) found you through the interview you did with him. I'm adding this comment after watching further in the video. This guy is a complete clown. How dare he blame everything from autism to depression on bread. What a quack. Kudos to you for retaining your composure after such an " inflammatory" comment. You're a Class Act sir

Dr Berg scared me away from eating carbs a few years ago, resulting in me going Keto for over a year with intermittend fasting. The result: severe trouble sleeping and morning anxiety and low energy for workouts. Plus a scewed look at carbs as a toxic macro.

OMG you have to check out his newest video I remembered his name from your videos. I had to listen twice cause I was shocked and couldn't believe what I'm hearing! He's basically saying that the only way to lose stubborn fat is by lowering carbs to zero and combining it with intermittent fasting, even saying go from 2 meals a day to one or even fasting for 2 days!! I wanna hear your opinion on this and maybe make a video it was insane!
