      Oh yeah - that would be much easier! For some reason, I thought you could only do that with chests and not wagons, but looking at 10:04, there's clearly a red X button on there. D'oh! Thank you for pointing that out 😀

      Additionally, it also allows you to put the "Full Cargo" filter at the supplying station.

      Nah, maybe adding a bit of explanation to the description. That's where I expected it to be when I watched the video.
      I'd also suggest adding these kind of small corrections / additions / new ideas for your tutorial series to some notes file. Then you can update everything in 1 go that needs to be updated when a sufficient quantity has accumulated (and/or the expansion comes out).

    for my first outpost, i just added a few spaces for ammo inside the ore train, and then unload it at the outpost

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a neat idea - as long as your wall bottlenecks fall close to an ore patch. I'd be a bit worried about the supply running out, but I guess you could make it summon a train anyway if it did run low on ammo. I tend to build my defense outposts on bottlenecks as much as possible, so they might be nowhere near an ore patch though.

    • @captheobbyist6434
      @captheobbyist6434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LaurencePlaysi did that just to defend a single outpost, not for overall base defense. now i have a question, do i need a supply train running around between every mining outpost giving ammo and repairs, or is it just better to defend everything with large walls which are at the bottlenecks?

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@captheobbyist6434 I have tried both in the past and I reckon it's better to do the latter - have a perimeter wall that covers all of your interests, rather than defending each mine separately. The main reason for this is that I find biters tend to wander around a lot and sometimes get on the rails. Small ones, the trains can deal with but if they run into a group, they'll get slowed down and the trains get eaten. Which is annoying! Also, I think if you find good bottlenecks then you can get away with fewer turrets.

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's true, that is a possibility. If that does happen, your train will be stuck there until it runs out of whatever's being constantly used up, which isn't ideal. If you want to protect against that, you could tell the train to depart "after 5s of inactivity OR after 60 seconds".

  • @KeithOlson
    @KeithOlson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Handy stuff! Some thoughts:
    1. I've stopped supplying my walls with repair kits, as 99.999% of the time, it is only a few (cheap) walls that are getting damaged and it is easier to just have the bot replace them as they are destroyed. It also keeps the bots, themselves, from getting damaged.
    2. I place my roboports as far as possible from the walls so that when the bots respond to a destroyed wall, they don't get there until *AFTER* the horde has been destroyed.
    3. The 'Filter Assistant' mod is an absolute *godsend.* It makes setting up & copying filters downright *trivial.*
    Cheers!

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've definitely considered whether it's worth repairing walls since as you say, they're probably cheaper than the repair packs! I just worry that one would break at exactly the wrong moment, and let the biters flood in! I've also put roboports further back (I guess you could place them so they can get to the lasers but not the walls, and then just repai the stuff you care about!), that would ahve been worth mentioning.
      That mod does look interesting! I don't tend to be setting filters all that often, so I probably won't bother, but it's definitely interesting - thanks.

    I know this is an old video, but i am trying to use the method with a single inserter and circuits just to show off, but i am having trouble wiht a detail. If, for some reason, my train doesnt have enough material (for instance, when its unloading, the robots start to use the itens), the inserter will ask for more of that same item, but the train wont have it, so it wont pull any of the other itens from the list. Any way to fix that? My huge brain was thinking about setting the train to "inactivity 10 seconds - Go to main base to get more supply" and come back with more of the needed item.

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Your way would indeed work, but it's not ideal because it means the trains are running around unnecessarily. You could use a non-stack filter inserter (the purple ones) because they have multiple filter slots, but that's not ideal because it would slow down the unloading.
      I asked on my Discord server if anyone had any ideas and got a rather nice answer!
      - Tell the station to "read train contents" and connect it to a decider combinator. "For each >0, output 1 of each". This will take the train contents and for any present items, normalise to 1 (ie, 20 turrets becomes 1 turret, 0 walls becomes 0 walls)
      - Take the signal that you were feeding to the filter inserter to another decider combinator with the same settings.
      - Feed both those signals from the combinators into a third decider combinator that's set to "For each >1, output 1 of each". This will mean that only signals which has both demand and supply will be passed through. Feed this to the inserter and use it to set the filter. Note that I set that to >1 instead of >0, this is important!
      If you'd like to discuss this further, you can find a link to the Discord server at the bottom of the video description. 🙂

    I might have to try this. Recently got factorio and have 250 hours into it and 210ish in my main world and I just use a spidertron with robot to replace or repair. Only issue I have is I spent way to long clearing land and putting walls way out away from my base so it’ll be a lot of rails to make a loop sine I’ll probably send an artillery train as well to clear bitter bases near my walls

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The good news is that rails are relatively cheap, and if you've cleared that much space out then I'm sure you're not short of stone or iron ore patches! It's very nice having all the defences automated and not having to worry about when to send the spider out though.
      Of course, if you've built out beyond the edges of your pollution cloud, you won't be getting many attacks, so you shouldn't need to do too much repairing!

    For the extra credit scenario, what do you do when the inserter is holding more item than can be inserted into the train and freezes? I've come up with a way to control the stack size and change it to 1 if the amount required in the inventory is less than 5 (or rather, greater than -5). Is there a simpler method you use?

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this specific case, I've only used the single inserter system for unloading, so that isn't a problem - as long as there's enough space in the unloading chest to take everything you've asked for, and an additional inserter load (of each) besides. If I was trying to do that for loading the train as well, then I'd use the same idea - I'd monitor the train's contents and when it got to the level I wanted, I'd stop inserting, and I'd make sure that there was room for an inserter's worth of excess. That said, I prefer your system because it allows you to hit a precise total, rather than just stopping when it's just over what you want. It's more complicated, but it's cleverer, which is very much in the spirit of what I was talking about with the extra credits!

    Is it possible to program the train that skips the next station if it's not available? So I could have one supply train supporting multiple front lines.

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - if a station is disabled, the train will skip it. If it has its train limit set to 0, the train will wait until the station becomes available.
      This means there are two ways to do what you want:
      - you can have all of your outposts with different station names, have them disable when they don't need a train and have all the stations in the train's schedule
      - you can have all your outposts with the same name and have them set their train limit to 0 when they don't need a train.
      I prefer the latter - it means you don't need to change the train's settings when you build a new outpost, and it means that the train won't visit all the stations which need stuff, even if its unloaded all its resources at the first station.

    is there any difference between enable/disable and setting train limits to 1/0 respectively?

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! There are a couple of differences.
      The biggest one is that if a station is disabled, a train will skip it and move on to the next one in its itinerary (unless there's another one available with the same name). If a station has its train limit set to zero, the train will wait at the previous station until the limit changes. These can both be useful depending on what you want the train to do! If the train just goes back and forth between two stations though, this doesn't apply.
      The second difference is more obvious - if you control the station through the train limit, you can choose to have multiple trains heading to the station at the same time if it's very short of supplies. This can be useful for mining trains going to a smeltery, for example.

If we redo your design, the ore train will be unable to go there since the station accepts 0 trains, but I'm thinking it might be doable with some circuit magic.

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With this design, I don't think it's possible to make a single station work for both. With LTN, you could have it sort of work, but you'd be bringing a lot of the outpost resources in. I think the best way to do this would be to have two stations overlapping.
      Put your ore pickup station in as normal, then put an additional train stop a couple of squares behind the main one and use that for your outpost, with the inserters and chests on the opposite side of the rails. That way you wouldn't need a second line. Make sure there's room for both trains to wait though, or you might clog your mainline!

Then I was thinking through the whole system and asked myself where does the combinator in your video know about the chest content so it can go to zero. Then I got it! The combinator knows it from the roboport logistic network. Maybe the fact that the roboport delivers the positive values from the logistic chests should be pointed out a little more clearly when describing the system. I solved it by just connecting the chests with a red wire to the inserters.

    • @LaurencePlays

      I guess I wasn't clear enough - when there's no walls in stock, the signal is -100 because of the combinator. When the train comes to restock the station, it will unload until the signal reaches 100 walls, which means there'll be 200 in the chest (200 walls, -100 from the combinator = 100 on the signal). This is what I meant by having twice the minimum.

      @@LaurencePlays Oh yes, thank you for taking the time to answer. I had given it some thought and figured it out after around 10 minutes, after which I forgot to edit my comment. Your answer is very clear at explaining it! It’s like an integer that goes both in a negative and a positive directions, so you should think from -100 to 100 all the way, giving 200 as a result. 👍 Great video!

      I hope my videos help! I go through them from the basics of how they work, scheduling, this one for outposts and then the LTN ones if you want to go the full distance.
