I spoke in tongues once. I asked God during prayer and was singing worship song, and I believed in my ask at that moment, and my tongue ( literally) went uncontrollably. I couldn’t control it and I was filled with so much joy. It was a great experience between God and I.

Well That is I have spoken one word that was a real word confirmed by my wife in another earthly language. I may have done it also multiple times (where others are not present). My tongues have been different at times and there is like 7000 earthly languages (?). I think U can speak both earthly languages and what dr Brown thinks. But what we see is more usual, is what he says.

I would disagree. He is intellectually dishonest. He’s redefined tongues to fit his false experience. His points are only right if the definition of tongues has changed to some mystery language. Nonetheless, from my perspective, he lacks contextual integrity and chooses to adapt his interpretation of scripture to his own false experiences. If you go back to his old teachings, he has veered far off from where he started. He now associates with heretics and false teachers. As the the old adage goes, you hang with dogs you’ll get fleas.

Over the past 2 years I have gone through all of my beliefs and have been trying to get someone to show me where I am wrong..I am constantly listening to opposing viewpoints so that I can be sharpened....but I still haven't found a convincing argument or hermeneutic that shows me tongues are not for today or shouldn't be used privately.
So far I have stepped away from WOF (some parts are valid in balance) prosperity gospel, pre- trib rapture, slight change on in women in ministry, how to understand prayer, and changed my understanding of free will (I'm not reformed) among other things....I am not quite as free acting on tongues and gifts as I once was, but no one has solid evidence against it in general.

I went to a gathering one night and a woman started to speak in tongues and there was a visitor there that understood what she was saying. The visitor was in shock because she was speaking in his language which was High German. He stood up with tears streaming down his face. He received Christ that night. Other times, when someone spoke in tongues, there was always someone that stood up to interpret right after. In my own experience, I pray in tongues in private, but there was one occasion while I was a missionary in Thailand and I went to visit a northern hilltribe. My translator could not understand or interpret for me, but the Holy Spirit spoke through me to a woman in her hut and she accepted Jesus. The whole tribe was gathered around and listening including the chief. Many of them came to Jesus too.

@@tomtemple69I am so glad you asked! Forgive my long reply in conveying my response to you. Other than the multiple witnesses from the team I led there, and most importantly, the Holy Spirit speaking to me, later on during our stay, my liason joined us. He was unable to come sooner. He is a Thai Christian and escorted us as far up the mountain as his pickup truck could take us. He had been working with that hilltribe previously and returned with a generator and sound system so we could reach a wider audience and have a worship concert for the entire village. He spoke the tribe's dialect and Thai. He translated through my translator what the chief and other tribe members excitedly had to say to me. (Specifically, with regards to their conversions.)
One of the people I spoke of in my initial comment was an older woman that was dedicated to demonic spirits while in her mother's womb, and she had tight string bracelets all the way up her arm, each representing an annual rededication as an offering to these spirits on behalf of her family. The tribe would also leave 'gifts' out to appease the spirits, so they would leave them alone. She let me cut those strings off of her arm and burn them while I sat with her in her hut immediately after she received the Holy Spirit. I was told that it was their belief that if she removed them, she would drop dead. This was conveyed to me by the Holy Spirit while it was happening, but confirmed later by my liason as well when he came to the village. In the past, they had witnessed instant death as a result with other individuals when someone messed with cutting those strings off. If they didn't leave offerings to the spirits, other bad things would befall their village.
The following day, a large group of us trekked to a watering hole and baptised those that received Jesus. I have photos. To get to this village, after my liason took us up the mountain in his pickup as far as we could go, the Holy Spirit led us the rest of the way. We had to trek through rice paddies infested with snakes, climb mountains with burned forests, and cross all kinds of other terrain to get there. I only had my Bible, a manual 35mm camera, another shirt and some concentrated soap to wash my clothing. I had to walk with these items on my head when wading through the rice paddies.
When God has a plan, even language barriers are no longer an issue. I had to rely 100% on the Holy Spirit as my translator and guide most of the time. I just go in faith as a willing vessel where He sends me, and trust Him to take care of the details. If I could post the photos here, I would.

And the real miracle was the fact that the Galileans who did not speak those languages were able to speak them with such clarity that all of the ethnic groups gathered in Jerusalem was able to clearly understand them.

I agree. Looking at the chat replay though, I see many don't, and they don't even seem to have actually listened to what Dr. Brown was saying as their minds were made up. I was not exposed to tongues early, so it was strange to me and I had a bias against the concept of what seemed to be some weird thing, though I had nothing to base that opinion on.
Now I have the experience of tongues, having walked away from the Lord in the interim, then returned, seeking him. God saved my life, delivered me from affliction, and during that time I became a tongues-speaking Christian. Now I have seen many healing--through my own prayers and words from the Lord, and have had many miraculous answered prayers, and the times when I've been praying and singing in tongues A LOT have been the most powerful times in my life to date!
Praise the Lord! Obviously this is a contentious topic, one in which I now have to disagree with members of my family on, as they still do not believe the value of speaking in tongues, and label it gibberish the same as the fans of Smart Christian, I take it.. One good book, "Chasing the Dragon" about a young woman evangelizing in old Hong Kong, and what happened when she started to pray in tongues every day, and to encourage the new converts, many opium addicts, to do the same--and their withdrawal symptoms vanished as they received the prayer language, and they became peaceful, and able to live a life free of drugs, quickly, like, within a few days they had no more withdrawal symptoms returning. It was a powerful witness of the Holy Spirit at work--and speaking in tongues was an important part of the amazing changes in those lives of the down and out and dangerous drug criminals in that place.

Which is what we see today. Why is it that a high percentage of churches where tongues are practiced have prosperity or word of faith or demon deliverance or other non biblical madness present? I agree with the fact there are abuses in the various movements, categories, churches, sects, etc. The evil one sows seed. But I think you are confused if you believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit ceased. THAT is certainly not a statement you will find in the Bible. I know, I know, it's "inferred." Because it happened then and "it's not happening now." At least where you are or from your POV.
It's wrong to attribute a miracle to a demon. It's also wrong to attribute to the Holy Spirit the work of a demon. BOTH are huge mistakes. And guess what, we need discernment. From...the Holy Spirit.
Is it easy to discern. Every false doctrine is due to lack of discernment at least in part. The word of truth has not been rightly discerned.
Many things trouble me in all sides of all the camps. Including yours. Including the prosperity gospel, etc.
But you are lumping things and this is pretty well always a mistake. Whether it's lumping a group of people or whatever. It smacks of sloppy research and bias--confirmation bias and selection bias. You are lumping works of demons with works of the Holy Spirit.
There ARE supernatural works of demons. There are supernatural works of the Holy Spirit. Both occur today. I lean towards the view of Andrew Strom, he has background in the charismatic and he also is critical of much of what he saw there. Firsthand experience holds some weight there, with Biblical basis.
I'm not saying anyone in particular is or isn't of the devil! God will allow the weeds to grow in the field of grain, and pull them out at the end and throw them in the fire.

This is exactly why we have to be very careful about squabbling over secondary issues. You have two professed believers in Jesus who read from the same bible but disagree on tongues. While I believe many churches that display tongues openly with no interpreter are out of order. I don't have enough understanding or the purpose of the mystery of speaking in tongue alone. The most important thing that we ALL should seek is to surrender ALL to Jesus and live in obedience contending for the faith. Many seek signs and gifts because it makes them feel like they are on a level with God. It's a gift in itself to walk upright as close to the Lord as possible.

    • @danielkim672
      @danielkim672 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@niceguy3000k Dr Brown explained his own viewpoint of it. In Greek, tongues means literally language. In Acts and 1 Corinthians 14, the use of the word tongues means an actual language. It is an absolute miracle that anyone could speak another language they never studied, and even never heard before fluently. Only with the power of the Holy Spirit could that happen. If one is speaking in tongues privately with and to God, what makes one think this is not in a language they do not know? when that individual speaks in a tongue, that will be a mystery to that person as only God would know, unless the interpretation happened as explained later in chapter 14. There is no instruction that says tongues should be only in your secret place. It should be shared as a gift. To who though? Verse 22 is clear
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
So then, how can tongues not be a language? If the gift needed to be used to reach unbelievers?

Great episode! Thanks so much for it! Its such a necessary topic-though tongues is just one aspect of it, the topic of the purpose and reality and necessity of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that can only be experienced by believers.
One of the biggest contextual errors that the church has made (and understandably so out of a desire to believe the word) is the concept that “every believer has the indwelling Holy Spirit when they get saved.” Why do people think this? Because verses in 1 Cor, Eph etc have an apostle speaking to the audience saying things like “you are the temple…” and “the Spirit that dwells” “abides” etc. So whats wrong with that?
The original audience all had the same experience we see in Acts: every time preaching about the gospel is done the ministers always make sure that they receive the Spirit after their conversion. So, this may be shocking to some, but look at the promise for you behind it: all of the epistles were written to people who ALL had this experience. If one hasn’t had this experience, they won’t understand many of the verses. The NT after Acts simply was not written to people who didn’t have this experience. It was Christs norm-but a lot of people dont “wait…to be endued with power from on high” and they rush out not being able to demonstrate the gospel of the Kingdom.
Case in point: some of the “suggested understandings” of verses by those who reject this experience as opposed to how they are understood and experienced daily by those who have. Wanna freak out a bit? Look at what Paul told the Galatians in Ch 3 was their security that the Mosaic covenant was over and that they were correct in the doctrine. Look at what faith v works is for real-not about “salvation” but about did they by faith or works R _____ the S_____.”
    Oooh its good.

I was the only one on the platform all of a sudden I started to speak in Tongues it was amazing then I started to interpret and The English was pure Praises to God, it sounded poetic. Went to church told my pastor he said I was interpreted. Another I was going to buy chocolates, my mouth just opened. I could not control it, I had to put my hands to my mouth. These are two occasions and I know we need to go on with Tongues. Please go on praying in tongues. Please use your prayer language, if it was not for today, Holy Spirit would not open my mouth and pray.
I went thru a time after that and satan keep telling me that I am talking gibberish, and I stopped praying less and less in Tongues. Holy Spirit is the power. Please don't give it up in your prayer language. Let Holy Spirit guide you. Don't listen to anyone, but Holy Spirit.

Good discussion . I had a very vexing experience after a short lived 'tongues' experience, which 'mystical' ( closing off ones mind.. similar to New Age contemplative practices today ) methods where employed ( based on coaching of Charismatics and their literature of that time ) Sensed I LOST Salvation and Peace after being drawn into ONENESS Doctrine of their interpretation of Acts 2:38, in which water Baptism servs as a conduit of the Blood of Christ... Therefore one cannot be saved unless one gets water Baptised by Oneness Pastor with Tongues as proof of HOLY SPIRIT indwelling. But even then, according to their doctrine on must maintain works to KEEP Salvation, which Most Trinitarian Charismatics hold to. Before my tongues experience I had many encounters with cults like 'The WAY', JW, LDS, Swedenborgain.. which I had enough discernment to sense their errors.
If a discerning Christian questions ant so called manifestation of the Miraculous , they get accused ( guilt tripped ) of "committing the Unpardonable Sin " Its my conviction that many who fall for charismatic theology fall into a spirit of fear if they question their theology. Fear of the Unpardonable sin is the glue that many Charismatics get into emotional bondage and loose their effectiveness in Chrisitan Witness.
My brief experience with tongues was most sincere in the motive of a 'closer' walk with Jesus Christ, but was mere gibberish nevertheless. To my shame there was a very 'cocky' spiritual pride during that short time.
I had unshakable understanding and assurance of Salvation prior to this mishap.
Maybe Dr Brown's experience is different from mine. Maybe Tongues draw Dr Brown closer to GOD and Service for HIM. My experience was just opposite.
I won't argue either cessationist or continuation of Tongues. I cannot deny however of the bad fruit of many charismatic ministries despite the hype and blitz. ( Non Charismatics ..Calvinists, 7th Day, RC, SBC, have their issues also ) Charismatic hype is always been the majority in Chrisitan TV since 1970s.
Most Charismatics deny Eternal Security of Born Again believer. If that's true, then I'm once again on the road to Hell despite the promise of Eternal Security I sensed the moment I trusted Christ a few years prior to my tongues experience. How anyone can be truly happy and joyful in the LORD with out this precious promise is beyond me.
"Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven."

I tried to read as much as you are saying cuz I'm at work. I didnt have the new age tongues experience but within the charismatic church I was caught up in "clearing your mind" new age doctrine that has infiltrated the false church. I grew up with that fear of questioning because its commiting the unpardonable. I am a cessationism and believe that God will use any gift he wants in current days. So that would mean tongues or healing or anything else God wants to do because he is God. But it's only for a purpose. I believe the apostolic gifts have ceased because the foundation cannot be laid twice. The cannon is closed. Dr Brown is too loose with this in my opinion and there tends to be a belittling of the authority of scripture as a result.

Dr.Brown is very incorrect by saying “ίνα” is a simple “that”. ίνα always introduces a dependent clause by staying “IN ORDER THAT” or “SO THAT”. Or “for the PURPOSE of”. He may be a Hebrew scholar, but not being able to recognize a purpose/result clause introduced by the conjunction ίνα shows that he cannot reliably break down the Greek.

All missionaries had to spend time with their potential converts before they could share an understandable Gospel. We do not have testimonies of European missionaries speaking in ‘unknowable tongues’ to reach their foreign tongues.
Why do we have sign language experts next to speakers these days. Couldn’t God simply speak into the heart of the deaf?
