@Jaegar Ultima Well if Cole never demoted to Arson, the Fund shit would probably never be revealed as Biggs is not a encouraged detective before Cole came and Elsa won't even think about seeking help from Jack.
It sucks, but it falls in line with his character. Phelps likely cared for his wife, but he didn't really have the deep connection. I hate cheating as much as the next guy but I feel like the characters in the game overreacted to Phelps sleeping with Elsa. Multiple cops talk about beating their wives but they are so taken aback and disgusted by Phelps cheating? I doubt it
It was pretty disappointing that Cole cheated on his wife with so little elaboration as to how their relationship was. In some of his conversations with Galloway he even stands up for her when Galloway talks about how bad he thinks women are, so that would have told me he liked her well enough. I guess they wanted to give him some character flaws, which is understandable. Though I felt like the war flashbacks made him seem like enough of a failure, and adding this on top just made it even more brutal. Regardless though, that is not precisely why they demoted him. Phelps was getting relatively close to cracking their inner-circle of corruption, so they struck at the only weak place they could actually find to take him down. It was very opportune for them that Phelps was cheating on his wife, and with a German woman no less. I guarantee that they would not have cared too much if they were not trying to cover for their own sins. Donnelly might have cared since he seems to be a religious man, but even he is shown to have some level of corruption by the way he claims to beat prisoners and then there is that one cutscene where he "confiscates" the crate of bootleg alcohol. Ultimately I think Cole's cheating arc worked out because I do not think he would have gotten his closure and redemption from his wartime demons if he had not fallen so low. This was a great game overall. I would also like to add that Roy Earle is one of my most hated video game characters of all time.
Cole's wife: What you've been going through? I've had reporters on my lawn all day Is she actually comparing that to Cole's experiences: Fighting the Japanese in the pacific, seeing your friend get blown up next to you, having to examine women who had been brutally murdered and chasing a psycho through a network of tunnels?
Yeah that kind of irked me too like did you forget that you’re married to a war veteran? Sure having reporters is a nightmare but Cole literally saw most of his comrades die because of his actions and he had to carry all that. She can’t compare that at all.
To be fair, he would’ve caught them regardless, they thought they could shame him into quitting. But the only way they could’ve handled it was to kill him. They tried it with Jack, didn’t work.
Cole just made the biggest mess in his police career. Is he always this prideful or he does this just to gain more popularity and thus make it plummet? Half of me believes Cole is a total jerk after the scandal he caused and half of me believes Cole can still do great things, he’s the finest cop and detective the LAPD has ever had.
She said that SHE'S had a tough time, what about the shit he faced in Okinawa, the time he went into a network of tunnels to catch a crazy serial killer and the gun fights he's been in
Meh, there's a child in everyone and this scene proves that Kelso was better than Cole. Even if Cole has leadership skills and charisma. At least Kelso is not fake.
@@MisterAAnderson Cole isn't fake. He fell for another woman. He is still the best detective that the department ever had. He took down a serial killer that killed over half a dozen women. He is one of the few characters that wasn't a bigot. He was close to a big breakthrough as far as the gigantic drug operation with surplus morphine. Corrupted officials did this and ruined his career. Say what you want but this was just a stupid plot device that Team Bondi put as an afterthought because they made Cole too likeable of a protagonist.
And yet she’s not cheating on him. You guys have no moral code, if you think this justifies his cheating. It’s not her fault he was in Okinawa. It’s his fault he cheated on her. Simple as that.
The sad thing about this whole part is seeing cole's reputation flushed down the toilet but we never got the chance to see his wife or have a flashback on his family
What the hell Donnelly was doing here? He's the Captain of the Homicide at CENTRAL. The Vice desk was at HOLLYWOOD. I think he was a part of SRF, too. Why else would he be there?
No, Donnelly loved Phelps as one of his favourite Detectives alongside Rusty. I think he’s there genuinely out of shock and disappointment because every other Lieutenant acknowledge his brilliant work.
Cole Phelps career took off when Donnelly gave him the first interview to obtain a successful confession and took a liking to Phelps throughout his Homicide run despite his questionable calls in the BD cases, namely the final case where Cole nabbed the actual killer.
I had 2 main issues with this: we see his wife once (and one more time he says he's married), and the idea he's cheating is barely implied. Like ok he's hanging out at this place after work...all we see is him sitting at the table...and that's how you know he's having an affair..... The DLC cases where it was the temp bartender I remember from my initial playthrough and that was only one line of dialogue. I forgot Cole was married, something that should be way more relevant.
It's just bad writing. Phelps was so morally upright he refused to sip a drink but all the sudden he decided to betray his wife and kids with some random club w...re. And everyone hates him so much because she is German?? the war ended in 1945. Marlene Dittrich was a star even during the war, nazi officer von Braun was the father of NASA
I played through this level a few times and I kept asking my if there is a way to prevent cole from getting demoted. Cause I played through and got all the questions right, 100% and still got demoted. Then I realized it's part of the storyline plot and felt relieved it had nothing to do with getting something wrong.
@@jonr9467 And to add to that. No one can ever get rid of all the drugs on the streets. The dealers will only just make more. The only thing the police can do is detrou what they discover. Despite Cole saying this to Sheldon, I disagree.
Well it was for the story, just kinda forced and unexplored, should've shown more of his motivations, what i inferred from her speech was that she always chooses selfish or avoidative reasons, "she couldn't handle it, your upsetting the girls" she never gave cole a chance, elsa liked him, talked about him, wanted him, cole was still wrong, but they should've shown why he was wrong, expanded the story
Adultery in the 1950s must have really felt like a death sentence for people, like you'll actually get charged as a criminal for it. Shit is definitely more relaxed as the years gone by.
its stupid actually. sure its his flaw but the game doesnt show that he is unhappy in his marriage nor does it shows that he's a big time flirt. even the woman doesnt flirts that much. its forced and all
But it never said that he was in some unhappy marraige to even consider the adultery If we had known that he wasnt satisfied with his own marriage, then we can see to some degree as to why he would commit such an action But this came out of nowhere as if the writers expects us to somehow knew about his wife and children as well as Cole does Hell, Cole the whole time never was shown to be a womaniser in any way and always puts his job first, this was insanely forced
@@murtazarizvi368 actually cheating happens like this all the time, some guy can be happy with their marriage but also succumb to the temptation of seeing another woman, of course not all men are like this but this does happen and I've seen it before irl

It’s one thing to be cheating but it’s another thing for committing adultery. Adultery is when you have sex with another woman or man while while in marriage and Cole was wrongfully accused by Roy he just set it up.
Probably felt bad for her first time that Roy slapped her. Seeing from Cole’s side she was a German woman that has to deal with racism due to hitlers destruction of Europe. Add the fact that Cole had seen a lot of awful things during war, it’s easy for someone like Cole to fall in love with her voice. Roy pretty much was setting up Cole. Others like Bekowsky took 5 years to get to traffic from patrol and then a bit more to make it to homicide. Phelps managed within months to reach from a simple police officer to Vice Detective. That gave Phelps false sense of security and the feeling that he could do whatever he wanted like Roy. Everything worked out well. Ironically the cheating bought Cole time and saved his family. If the “scandal” hadn’t happened, The chief would either sacrifice him or his family to make a distraction so he wouldn’t be discovered.
I wonder if Cole Phelps still kept a picture of himself, his wife and kids in his wallet. I hope that will make him feel any better and also he still wore his wedding ring.
I replayed the game recently, and this still feels as out of nowhere as I remember it being. I wish we could have actually seen this develop. We didn't need a cutscene of them boning or anything, but couldn't we have had some buildup to this? Maybe seeing them spend more time together, inserting some flirty dialogue into the interview with Elsa, or at least in some way indicate that Elsa is interested in him before Roy sees him visit her apartment. Cole has no answer when he's asked if he loves her; that implies something deeper than a casual FWB situation. This needed more.
No it didn't because we see cole as his war hero and a case man but then we see the flashbacks in war and his trips to the blue room which shows something is wrong and jack completes the story that all of this was for a medal no one deserved that's why Cole and Courtney died they cared about it jack didn't that's why he lived
The ending is so brutal, his wife didn't want to speak to him, so he went for consolation to his not-so-secret lover. He went from apologetic to opportunistic attitude in a matter of seconds. You could say that he deserved it, he didn't feel wrong with cheating on his wife.
I'm dissapointed in Cole, even tho he's an honest cop, but he already have a children and married Why cheat on her with Elsa just because she understand the effect of the war, when you can confide with your wife too..
Question sort of answered itself. He cant confide or really relate to his wife about the war since she really has absolutely no idea about it, she didnt live through it.
I love how Rockstar makes some of the most flawed protagonists in all of gaming history. And also how the story is not always a direct inclined journey but realistically knowing that things will not always end like an average movie that make you feel happy for the main character.
This is so relatable though. Most men cheated on their girlfriend or wife. This just makes the story more human and realistic. One of the reasons this had the one of the most immersive and best storylines
He cheated because of his PTSD from the war that’s why he said “you don’t know what I’ve been going through” and he felt emotionally distant from his wife because of it
It probably would've been done better if Cole was framed for it. Or same thing, but Arson was done earlier and Vice was the final desk. The latter, I can imagine that after spending some time in Vice, Cole would've been framed by the Suburban Redevelopment fund and became a fugitive and now had to stop them and clear his name.
Idk, i like that he actually has flaws, if he had no faults it would make him seem like the perfect american detective robot model or something, imo it made the protag complex and more interesting.. I just wished we get a little bit more screen time and development with coles family
That was messed up that I got suspended from the police department and got me back from the police station from the beginning of the game when I was a patrol officer
I reached the arson section of the game last night and was beyond shocked when I saw this scene, at first I thought Cole was being framed for something. But after remembering that scene of him stepping inside Elsa’s apartment, I finally realized what he was doing in there. 3:30 when I saw that, I actually had a mini theory that the person who stepped inside was a criminal impersonating as Cole as a way to ruin his image, but now I know the truth. Huh guess even protagonists can make mistakes, can’t they?
It was Roy, there was a cut scene after Cole went up to Elsas apartment when he followed her home after questioning her at the Blue Room, they were suppose to go see gangster Mickey in the day but Cole decided to the next day instead. Roy was waiting for him to show up
I feel this could have been handled better of instead of him cheating he could have instead tried to help elsa since she seems to have issues and his wife and the police took it the wrong way I feel that would have made the scene better and have cole reason for being with her make a lot more sense
Maybe instead of an affair, he was working with Elsa on her testifying against Roy to the IA. Have him working on a case against the LAPD when he gets framed falsely as a cheat and a crook, he can’t tell the truth as it would ruin the case and give his hand away against the LAPD. The framed him because he was getting close, they didn’t know he was intentionally targeted them (or they would have had him whacked). He couldn’t tell anyone, not even his wife because he was sworn to secrecy. But someone on IA gave him up. Even the watchmen who watch the police force for corruption ended up corrupt. Have a whole then who watched the watchmen?
The entire point of Phelps' character was that everyone sees him as a hero that he never was. Him having an affair may be unthinkable to the audience. But is it really that unthinkable? Many best people we knew have done something similar or far worse.
What confuses me is the part where the captain says "you're lucky the war is over or you would've been shot" would someone be shot if they were caught with a German person or is it more then that?
@@kingsboro1 yeah I remember that Cole pretty much caused a little discontent among his squad due to his treatment to the japanese I'm not sure if the cave incident caused the squad to snap or something maybe

Fun fact:
The actors that played Cole and Marie Phelps are actually married in real life
I hope it's not a fact nor a fun fact that Aaron Staton actually had an affair in his marriage to her.
Already knew that.

@Lee John Women
Seems like a prime example of why he connected with Elsa, who understood the gravity of the situation that was WWII
Women

She said that SHE'S had a tough time, what about the shit he faced in Okinawa, the time he went into a network of tunnels to catch a crazy serial killer and the gun fights he's been in
True, but Cole never talked to her about what he went through either. It's understandable that the affair has made her unwilling to listen.

My heart almost broke when he cheated his wife......
He wanted to tell Cole in person, eye to eye.
Then I realized it's part of the storyline plot and felt relieved it had nothing to do with getting something wrong.

It’s one thing to be cheating but it’s another thing for committing adultery. Adultery is when you have sex with another woman or man while while in marriage and Cole was wrongfully accused by Roy he just set it up.
I wish they had atleast given us a reason why cole cheated, didnt seem like he and elsa had a strong conmection or anything
If anyone had noticed, Cole had been hanging around the Blue Room the night after completed cases before going back to his home.
I wonder if Cole Phelps still kept a picture of himself, his wife and kids in his wallet. I hope that will make him feel any better and also he still wore his wedding ring.
I made it to where he was looking at Elsa and I *knew* he was going to do something he’d regret.
All I thought from this part was "he never gon' be president now" from Hamilton
The entire last pat of the game is so bad and illogical starting with Phelps cheating on his wife.
The ending is so brutal, his wife didn't want to speak to him, so he went for consolation to his not-so-secret lover. He went from apologetic to opportunistic attitude in a matter of seconds. You could say that he deserved it, he didn't feel wrong with cheating on his wife.
It funny how the DA says a criminal can not serve yet him the police chief and them are criminals
Allow me to rephrase on their behalf “A publicly known Criminal cannot serve as an LAPD officer”
I'm dissapointed in Cole, even tho he's an honest cop, but he already have a children and married
Why cheat on her with Elsa just because she understand the effect of the war, when you can confide with your wife too..
He cheated because of his PTSD from the war that’s why he said “you don’t know what I’ve been going through” and he felt emotionally distant from his wife because of it
He cheated because he has ptsd his wife and his child doesnt make his life better? Is he selfish?
@Kevin Jeremy Pascale that mean every soldiers was in okinawa cheat on their wife?
Cole cheated on his wife and his death doesnt make the story better. I Know the story was realistic but not really cool

It was Roy, there was a cut scene after Cole went up to Elsas apartment when he followed her home after questioning her at the Blue Room, they were suppose to go see gangster Mickey in the day but Cole decided to the next day instead. Roy was waiting for him to show up
I feel this could have been handled better of instead of him cheating he could have instead tried to help elsa since she seems to have issues and his wife and the police took it the wrong way I feel that would have made the scene better and have cole reason for being with her make a lot more sense
or made him go to elsa for information but ended up having sex after a few drinks. i mean literally anything could have happened
Nah, it's better when they show the likeable guy can also make mistakes.
