Five secrets for getting a postdoc position!

- Doctoral program students can use these five ideas for improving their chances of getting a lucrative postdoctoral researcher fellowship after PhD, Doctor of Philosophy or doctorate degree. These ideas must be seeded during the PhD years for the fruits to be picked up at the end of the PhD! These ideas prepare you for a postdoctoral program position while you are still a PhD student.

I remember watching the video entitled "How to get the J1 visa (as a postdoc)." At that time, I didn't consider applying for a postdoc in the US and never thought I would be eligible to apply and get the position as a postdoc in the US. However, the video inspired me to apply for a postdoc position, and now I am in the US. Thank you so much for the videos, which give not only information but also inspiration for me.

thank you so much Dr. Ganguli for the informative video. i have a question, when is the best time to think seriously about your post-doc, including drafting a proposal, looking for post-doc opportunities , getting in touch with potential supervisors etc? i am in a 4-year PhD program. Is the third year or fourth year the best, or do i have to wait until i have completed my PhD?
It is good to start about a year before you anticipate your PhD degree with be awarded. For foundation postdocs, finding a host and writing a proposal takes time so a year May be needed. In addition, foundation postdocs like Humboldt also allow you to delay your visit by a small amount to get visa etc if needed. . For job type postdocs, 3-6 months before the PhD is good as here the professor is likely to have obtained funding and is looking for a postdoc to do the work at short notice. This video may help

Do h-index and citations play important role in this?
Well, high h-index and citations are always good but these take time to grow to values like 10 or 20 which are considered good. So mostly papers in good journals are the key. But if someone has a high h-index or highly cited non-review paper that will buttress his case

Ieee conference papers are considered to be high quality. You certainly have a chance at postdoc. If your skill matches the needs of an advertisement then you can get. Journal papers are typically needed by foundation postdocs.

At least one journal paper makes your cv look good. 2-5 is a good number for more competitive fellowships.

Sir I have one query. Please resolve this.
I am working as an assistant professor (contractual) in govt engineering college since Jan, 2018. Along with teaching I enrolled for part-time PhD in Jan 2019 in NIT. Now I submitted my PhD (on Nov, 2022) and applying for Postdoc position.
I am very confused now. Should I mention my teaching experience in my CV and cover letter or only show only my PhD research experience.
Different person giving me different advices as follows:
1. Don’t mention teaching experience. They will know that you are part-time and will not sort list you.
2. Mentions your teaching and academic experience. It will help you in sort listening

Facts as they can call your employer or supervisor later and also do a background check through third party firms to confirm your resume or CV.
