I liked this fight. Get clones of different characters to fight, but felt his whole arc ended quickly with no real explanation lol. Maybe there's more in the secret route. Let's see. Enjoy!

Arval doesn't despise Shez when they recruit Byleth.
Epimenides on the other hand despises Shez for recruiting Byleth since he hates Sothis, and by extension, Byleth as well.

    So, from what I understand:
When a Progenitor God dies, their soul enters this "Sea" of souls. Epimenides (an Agarthan man) purposefully took the soul of a Progenitor God (Arval) from this sea and bound his consciousness to it, so that whenever his body dies and Arval finds a new vessel, his consciousness can hitch a ride to that body and effectively live forever.
I guess this is a fine explanation, but I still have a few questions:
    1. Who is Arval, actually? Judging by the nature of their body inhabitation, they at least seem to be the same kind of creature as Sothis. Are they just some random dragon that Epimenides chose to use for his experiment?
    2. Are there any conditions that need to be fulfilled for Arval to reincarnate into a new body? I ask this because for Sothis, there were some pretty crazy criteria that needed to be met for Byleth to happen (Crest of Seiros and Crest of Flames blood needed to be mixed, and Sothis' crest stone needed to be implanted into the resulting child). Is the same true for Arval, or do they just randomly attach themselves to a human whenever they're born? For a while, I was leaning towards Shez being an Agarthan experiment that had Arval forcefully implanted into them (as the opening POV shot from inside what is clearly an Agarthan facility seemed to suggest) but that can't be true since none of the Agarthans recognize Shez throughout the story. If Shez were created by the Agarthans, an argument can be made for Kronya not knowing about them, but there's no way Thales or Solon wouldn't know, since this is exactly the kind of project they would have intimate knowledge of.
    3. How the hell did Epimenides know how to pull this shit off? I know Agarthan technology is advanced, but there's no way this is common knowledge there because otherwise, they'd abuse the hell out of it. Did he somehow steal this knowledge from the Children of the Goddess? Rhea at the very least seems to know the exact method needed to bring Sothis back, and Seteth seemed to be aware that it was possible as well, since he figured out early on that Byleth was Rhea's attempt at doing so. But I imagine this would be a closely guarded secret so, what the hell happened?
In any case, this just goes to show how lacking our knowledge on the early lore of Three Houses really is. I understand if this stuff is kept intentionally vague for the purpose of maintaining the mystery, but that doesn't stop it from being frustrating, lol.

    • @phonicrose8395
      @phonicrose8395 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Rhea/Seiros didn't know how to resurrect Sothis though. The only known way, was via the Chalice in the DLC chapter/story. But she didn't have the 4 crests she needed for it, at the time, and then it turned out to not function how we initially thought it would.
Byleth is a complete accident, Seiros tried several experiments and attempts to revive her mother, to no avail. I think Sitri was attempt 12? Byleth was the first child of an experiment, and had Sitri not asked to have the heart of Sothis removed from her, and put into Byleth, then Sothis would've never potentially awakened. Although it is interesting that in 3 Hopes, Sothis actually controls Byleth for a moment. Which is something Seiros wanted Sothis to learn how to do in 3 Houses, so she could fully reincarnate.
IF anything, I'd say Epemenides came from the time when Sothis first emerged on the land, and likely took over a decent swath of it, for her and the Dragons she then brought. Thus sparking the war and hatred. Epemenides was likely a leader or massive scholar during the height of their civilization, before the Agarthan war.
As for Arval, I wonder if he was a human God? We know Sothis is a Time Dragon, and is heralded as the Progenitor God for Nabateans (Manaketes) in that region as she descended seemingly from the moon.
Like I wouldn't be surprised if she was one of the 12 ancients or something (assuming it's connected).
But in the same vein, I wonder if Arval ever was some form of Dragon, or maybe just a Progenitor for human life.

@@nuibaba280 I've only seen the full Scarlet Blaze route (both routes) from Faerghast's stream. In my opinion Scarlet Blaze started really strongly with the coup in Enbarr, the fleshing out of minor characters like: Count Gloucester, Count Hevring, Lord Lonato, the alliance with Claude.
Then it just kind of fizzles out in the end. Like WTF was that ending? So anticlimactic for both routes. And the whole evil Arval arc doesn't even enter the main plot in a meaningful way, they just continue on like nothing happened, it feels like a side show. None of the Shez, Arval, Sothis backstory rivalry lore is fleshed out. If anything the "bad" ending was more coherent, despite being very anticlimactic. It feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully the other routes aid the coherence better.

@@nuibaba280 I think it’s because a lot of things have to happen or rather not happen for this story to occur the way it does. Shez and Arval are, in my opinion much less interesting protagonists, that’s not to say I don’t like them, but I feel like the changes they make to the story aren’t a direct consequence of them being involved.
The second problem I have and the main reason why the story occurs is that Byleth is basically completely removed from the central plot, and Byleth is basically the most important person in three houses (besides maybe Edelgard) almost the entirety of the first game Revolved around him and Sothis just… EXISTING. While I understand that’s the whole shtick of this game (what if Byleth never came to the monestary) It’s not like they suddenly should go back to just being some mercenary, why does Sothis basically just vanish after you recruit Byleth? I don’t have a problem with making Byleth less important to the overall plot, if it’s done correctly.
I really like the game, but the story just feels a bit weaker in a lot of places this time around, plus no S supports and the messy Endings, it’s pretty easy to see why people are somewhat leaning towards negative.

It's cool yeah, but terribly unexplained or inconsequential. The story explains so little about Shez and Arval, and the changes from the main game occur from forces external to them, so it barely justifies their presence.
Don't get me wrong, the game is great and fun but it's not like it did much else to the overall lore or general story the main game does not tell already.

The most curious thing is that his tome is from Timotheos. Hapi mentioned feeling a strange sensation in one chapter relating to the slitherers..
Has Timotheos been a key part of Those Who Slither in the Dark since the very start? When the Chalice of Beginnings was crafted was the current host of Arval present inside the Timotheos crest-wielder? So many questions man, this game is packed to the brim with the lore

Honestly Three Hope’s writing is all over the place, so some Agarthan miraculously turned himself into a surrogate progenitor god through some means. The Agarthans are aware of this and for some reason didn’t attempt to replicate it?
Even aside from all that then there’s the fact that Myson mentions “his core” meaning that not only did Epimenides pass down his consciousness through Arval but through some means his core was implanted into a human body. Potentially through the Agarthans but we also see Epimenides scorned by the the other Agarthans such as Myson. So he potentially went rogue? And the way Sothis is introduced in Three Hopes as viewing Byleth only as a means to and end to her own wishes and will and portrays her as more of a villain- She even straight up says that if Byleth attempts to sit on her throne she would have surrendered her body to her ENTIRELY! This whole Secret Mission is honestly the MOST underwhelming part of the Game (the fights are cool, the story part of it isn’t), as the Final Mission proceeds as if nothing happened. And apparently, only Scarlet Blaze’s Ending has any difference (if one could call it that) if Byleth is alive or not, but the Game doesn’t even try to explain how that’s possible.
