  • Stealership had 3 cracks at it and never were able to figure out my constant overheating alarm issue.
    I keep my boat and motor looking new so they never thought to look inside.
    Here is what I found. It runs like a top again.

    Thanks for this, I can’t wait to clean the water jackets of my 40 hp Yamaha 4stroke which is overheating.

    Sorry Guys. I did not video the reinstall but it was pretty simple. I bought a long flat sanding block and slowly and evenly sanded off the old gasket material. Bought the 4 needed gaskets and just reinstalled using the #s that were casted into the parts. Hand tightened everything then torqued to manufactures specs. The head covers have #s next to each bolt. This is the order in which you torque.
    Update on performance - I can and have run Wide Open Throttle all day and does not overheat at all. Running like it was new. Not one issue since I did this fix.

      Right on man. Thanks. I’m about to do mine as well. I’m getting some overheating but only at high rpm like 4500+. I’m fairly sure this is the issue. I changed my Tstats already and they were grimed up. I have a 22 year old 200. Thanks for the vid.

    Bolts came off very easily. Be careful bolting back up. I used a torque wrench and recall it not needing much. Maybe 8-10 Newton meters. One bolt never gave the clicking torque sound so I kept going and snapped the bolt head off. No big deal as there are so many bolts that hold the covers on. Important part is to do them in the correct order and keep the same tension on all bolts.

    That's why Yamaha RECOMMENDS flushing the motor 15 minutes after each use. Mineral deposits will occur in any outboard regardless of brand if it is not maintained properly.

      Do the 15 minute flush even if run in clean fresh water?

    • @Bigfish92084
      @Bigfish92084  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean "Flush fifteen minutes? Are you flushing with water? Or are you running the motor out of the water and trying to push all the water out of the motor. If you are flushing with a hose, that water still has mineral deposits in it? I only run in fresh water so not sure what you mean by "Flush fifteen minutes". Can anyone elaborate on this. Thanks.

      flush it regardless

      With a hose and fresh water,theres not enough minerals in hose water to build up

      @@Bigfish92084 Running in freshwater IS flushing your motor.. the 15 min flush is for salt water use only, unless you are running in very dirty water..Like muddy... The deposits in your engine could be from stopping the motor immediately after running hard.. Idle your motor down for a couple of minutes before shutting off.... It lets the engine passages cool so they don't evaporate the water in the passages depositing the crud.

    Was not hard to do at all. My Yamaha has every bolt numbered on the head so it is easy to unscrew from the highest number to the lowest number. More importantly when re-torque after new gaskets are put on. Hardest part was cleaning the old gasket material off to make a perfectly flat smooth surface before installing new gaskets. I bought a long flat sanding block and just took my time. Be sure to stuff something into the piston area to keep debris out. Send me your email and I will send more pics. If I recall correctly, there are two layers of covers o 2 sides you need to remove so there will be 4 new gaskets to replace. 2 on each side. The bolts are not on there super tight either. I actually snapped a bolt head off when torquing the outside cover back on because I kept waiting to hear the click on the wrench. Be careful not to over tighten.
    Even though I snapped the bolt off and consulted the stealership mechanic he just told me to put some sealant around that bolt and not worry. 5 years later... no issues.

    I have a 2006 Yamaha SX210 and have tried everything but this. Thermostats, Temperature sensors, cleaned pissers-all on my own. Had serviced to do temp switches and still not good. Any instructions on doing this would be appreciated. Not sure I can do this one on my own, but I have a feeling it's going to look like this when I get inside.

      Butthole Tickler
      At first, yes... only at WOT. But as the years went by, progressively worse... then to the point of only found 25mph for less than 10 minutes. Engine alarm would sound and motor would cut off.
      After I cleaned all those passages, been running like a top. WOT no problem now.
      Hope this helps.

      Bigfish92084 thanks for the info I have a 1990 200 yam I just took off my boat and swapped to a new boat. Just had a new water pump replaced it was completely melted and on my first test run in the boat I opened it up and after a few min it went into limp mode with temp alarm. It cooled down in about 2 min and didn't feel that hot and was pumping water great. I was kinda confused but I rarely run the boat that hard so thought maybe it was a fluke but I think this is my answer. I guess I'll get some new gaskets and find the torque specs and pull it down and clean it. Thanks again

    • @The.Norwegian
      @The.Norwegian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ethan, that is completely untrue. this happens to any engine in salt water when you don't run it properly with freshwater from time to time. if your area has a high salt content, then of course you're gonna get a lot of it stuck in the engine after a while..

    • @richie2dicks468

      You obviously aren't aware that Yamaha made engines for mercury for several years. Mercury couldn't get their engines to pass emissions. I run a 1990 yam and recently bought a new boat with a blown merc. And another replacement merc. I paid to have it all swapped to my yam even though it's 10 years older. Mercury was so brilliant they used plastic gears in their oil pump which fail and blow them up. I'll never run a merc on anything I own
