This is exactly what I'm considering doing myself. Opened mine up today & that secondary filter is matted bad. Surprised it can even breathe at all. After seeing this video I'm going to do the same. There's a higher risk of engine damage with it unable to breathe, than with removed.
    Thanks!

Have you removed this extra filter? any effect on it...i have 4runner and have this in that too....i am getting code: Mass or volume Air Flow Sensor "A" circuit low
      P0102"
No idea if it belongs to this filter...as i never changed this extra filter

I removed that filter on my 2017 Mazda 3 -- and that FIXED a vexing problem I had where I would get a 5-10hp kick (accelerating) when backing off from full throttle. So this was holding back a good deal of power at full throttle (high flow) -- and on my first test drive I reached 100mph by accident on a stretch that always yielded 90-95. I was stoked at the performance gain! I tried blowing through it with my breath and feeling what came through on my hand -- and it felt like haIf the flow of the air filter. I had no code problems. I used a flat-blade to pry it out & break the plastic welds. I saved it because I suspect that it may cause an evaporative emissions failure during smog test (at least the visual inspection) -- and I can always stick it back in place for a smog check.

Did this on my 2nd gen Tacoma (4cyl, 180k miles), immediately had about 2 mpg improvement over 19-20mpg between fill ups. After about 10 fill-ups, I've never had less than 21.5mpg after removing this secondary filter.
Just for fun, I blew compressed air through the old filter and very little was coming through. Putting the air gun on my face, it was offensive how much airflow there was, but after holding it up to the filter, it was like a light breeze. Short term term fuel trim is about 2% less after the delete, meaning the engine is adding a little bit more fuel than it was, meaning the ECU is taking care of things--just as the Toyota design engineers intended for the ECU to do. Nissans trim or add 25% before they bite the dust so I'm not worried about it.

It's for "drying" the intake charge to keep particulates from building up on the MAF - it was never needed just another engineering project for Toyota because of warranty issues from previous years.

Where did you read that 😂
Its to stop hydrocarbon emissions from gas on valves/cylinder evaporate escaping into the atmosphere. It absorbs the fumes and then releases when the engine is turned on again.
Removed on prius does nothing bad or noticeably good

Many people did it on 4runner. I did on my 4th gen - after removing my rpm decreased on 200-300 rpm. Did the same on my BMW r1150rt, called "canister-ectomy". Very recommended.

Sounds like maybe you were a little too rough handling the MAF. Stick that filter back in, clear the code and see if the CEL comes back.

Question, if you completely remove the charcoal filter, do you put any foam to fill the gap created between the airfilter and the top of the airbox. I seen some people cut out the charcoal filter, and I could see how a gap would not be present in that situation.
