In this video I'm testing out the Tacoma K&N Air Filter to see if it's better than stock. Many have said that a k&n drop in air filter is one of the best tacoma performance mods. With this upgrade, I mainly wanted to see if the tacoma air filter needed an upgrade. I wanted to see if it'd give my tacoma more horespower or if there's any k&n horsepower gain. I also wanted to see if the k&n air filter bad for my truck as I've heard some stories about it not filtering dirt very well. In the future, I'd love to upgrade the tacoma air intake and maybe do a tacoma k&n cold air intake. This video also hows how to do the tacoma air filter replacement.

One key I've learned from using them for a while is to not over oil. Just a few light sprays and then it dry some before running with it installed.
Definitely gonna be careful not to over oil!! Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
I bought one after I bought my new Nissan Frontier in 2012. I have been really happy with mine. I also bought it to save money from buying brand new paper air filters. It is my way to save the planet and more money for future upgrades. I just need to maintain it on a regular basis.
Yup it's nice not having to buy new filters all the time
I’ve been using them for years on my 4Runner. I replace them once a year. I don’t bother cleaning them sometimes you can use too much oil and clog up the sensors. Still cheaper than replacing regular filters 2 to 3 times a year when each cost 33 bucks.
Me personally- I have always used them - most of my vehicles were over 150k & I have gotten better fuel mpg w/ them.. as far as issue on sensors- should clean them @ 60k - 75k. I did - also use marvels mystery oil in take every month. K & N has been used in racing - quite a few exotic & European cars use similar filters from factory.
Good stuff man. Thanks for watching/commenting!
They key is not to over oil them just use a small bead of oil on the dirty and let it soak through on the clean side then you shouldn't have to worry about sensors issues
Your honesty made subscribe immediately. Keep up the good work.
Appreciate it!
One of the best high flow air filters out there, second to them are the dry flow ones by AEM which i think is made by K&N now also. Just dont over oil them, they will screw up your maf if you do.
Haven't heard of the AEM one I'll have to check it out. Thanks for watching!
@@KnightWheelsMedia yeah there are many dry flow ones on Amazon made by AEM which is now owned by K&N and other companies make them
I put 200k miles on my old Honda CRX with a K&N never had an issue. The oil traps the contaminants.
Good to hear!
It's nice to see a engine bay that looks like mine on youtube for a change.
😂
I got a K&N air filter right after I got my 2022 Tacoma and it’s been running just fine. I didn’t get it for extra HP are better gas mileage, I only got it because in the long run you won’t have to replace the air filter anymore which is like a little investment.
Yup, that’s the only reason to go with them imo
Nice upload. i have a 2021m Tacoma sr5, i have been eying up this filter for a while......in fact, it's in my shopping cart on amazon/... maybe do another video on the gas mileage, and if you have seen a difference.....
No gas mileage difference unfortunately
Haven't thought of these before, nice vid buddy
Thanks man!!!
I've seen legit dyno test on this filter and it absolutely adds the horsepower as claimed. I can't think of a better bang for the buck.
But does it FILTER better? 🤔
@@fishtacoma I'm running the TRD intake with a snorkel.
@@robertyoung8289 Yes, I heard in your other comment the other day! I’m sure the snorkel really does help get cleaner air vs. a normal intake
@@fishtacoma What surprised me most was the 2 mile per gallon increase on the freeway.
@@robertyoung8289 Well, I guess it kinda makes sense. On the freeway, your snorkel essentially becomes a ram-air intake, forcing more oxygen into your system = denser air = efficiency
(Not to mention colder air that it grabs up there too)
good upgrade, better than buying CAI that does the same thing
From my experience a CAI at least makes it SOUND better, but I'm sure it depends on what type.
Check out the KandN cabin air filter as well. Ours can get dirty in just one weekend of off roading. It will pay for it self in just two factory replacements.
I really do need to replace my cabin air filter haha starting to smell a little funky
Can't speak on the drop in filters and the improved MPG or horsepower - I installed the K&N CAI on my '17 Tacoma and it made an impact for sure! With a larger intake tube and filter I can hear/feel the difference, MPG really comes down to your driving habits...
True. CAI would definitely have a greater affect compared to the drop in.
Does it get your oil dirtier quicker?
Not that I noticed
Thank you for responding
Thank you so much!!!! Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I always buy 2 k&n filters for a easy swap out while I'm servicing the other
Great idea 🤙🏼
My paper filters were still in good shape for engine and cabin, so I’m holding onto them, and if my K&Ns aren’t dry and I need to drive my truck, I’ll just use the paper ones for a day. Seems like the most eco way
I love Toyota Tacoma 3rd gen!!!
👍🏼
Nice video hun! I’m part of a TACO girl group in Texas, people praise the K&N air filter. You get 1 to 2 more MPG on highway vs stock.
Thanks!! I haven't noticed much of a change after installing but I also haven't really been paying attention lol
What's taco?!
@@TENNSUMITSUMA tacima
🌮 for Tacoma sorry, misspelled
@@TENNSUMITSUMAif you don’t know what taco is you must not own a Tacoma
Not a fan of oiled filters. Have you or do you plan on installing a catch can? I know it’s debated but after owning a diesel(worst case scenario )I know they work
I know one guy who installed one but never thought of doing it myself. I'll look into it!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t an oil catch can be more prudent on a turbocharged vehicle? I had a BMW 335i, and it needed a catch can due to the design cycling used air into the intake to be burnt again to be “cleaner!” It had a side effect of making the valves dirty and requiring a walnut blast to clean it. The catch can helped tremendously.
Note: Mumbo Jumbo is a West African word often cited by historians and etymologists as deriving from the Mandinka word "Maamajomboo", which refers to a masked male dancer who takes part in religious ceremonies.
Thank you for this wisdom I didn't know I needed lol
I got the trd air filter.. wonder how these compare 🤔🤔
Visually they look pretty similar. However I'd feel safer using the TRD one since it's OEM haha
The whole complaint on “oil getting on MAF” makes absolutely zero sense unless the pipe to it is straight to the sensor with no curves and bends. You have to clean the MAF anyways so there is no real issues here🤣🤷🏾♂️
Agreed lol
Don't over oil filter. It can mess up the air flow sensor..
Yessir!!!
It will flow more air but also flow more dirt!
I can't argue with that hahaha
And?
So many people use them if it didn’t filter dust decent they wouldn’t buy it but look at how much people do buy them period
The oil goes a little too hard in my opinion. Went off-roading with a group today and my air filter got clogged while the rest of the dudes with paper filters were fine.
Interesting. I didn't notice any excessive build up but didn't really think to check/compare after off roading
Kn filters are way better than stock they filter out better than oem. But idk about the “50% more air flow I doubt that is true”
Definitely have some mixed reviews but it's been good for me so far 👍🏼
@@KnightWheelsMedia th-cam.com/video/YypvDEQyNBY/w-d-xo.html watch the graph at 6:04. Pretty concerning for the K&N. (Ofc this is just a random k&n filter and not specificly THIS one for the toyota)
Some K&N may flow +100% but your engine may not pull enough air to need that extra air over what a stock filter flows.
P.S. that filter test linked to Gabor? Is garbage science. His fancy particle tester said K&N same as no filter???
Not true K&N does not filter then OEM... Not even close.
The K&N will definitely save you some money over time. Especially with the off-roading you do. Just don't over oil them when you wash it and the MAF shouldn't give you any problems.
For sure!! Thanks for watching
Why not get aem dry flow ?
Haven't heard of it haha
So, overall impressions in the long term?
No thoughts really. You don't notice much of a difference lol
Whoo, first! 😎
Idk how you pulled this one off hahaha Robert is gonna get you one of these days
When you did your lift.... any issues with the TSS? I’m about to order the eibach kit and I have read some say yes some no.
None at all!
@@KnightWheelsMedia thanks for the quick reply man. I appreciate it.
@@KnightWheelsMedia did you re use the oem tpms sensors?
The only time a K&N filter will not filter as well is because they are dry. You have to use oil!
For sure 🤙🏼
Watch out with KN filter will let water pass throw it easier than a paper filter.
Noted!
Just installed mine with my 2018 tacoma. How was it after 1 year?
I ended up selling the truck before having it in for a year so can't really tell you haha
@@KnightWheelsMedia oh ok thanks
I didn't know sound was a thing that was used to determine functionality. Good to know. Try it on a real truck next time. 🤷
Don't worry I'll excuse your ignorance. Yes, a lot of people buy these for more intake noise.
Is it considered a cold air intake ?
Nope, just a drop in air filter replacement. A cold air intake would replace the full intake system.
I think K&N makes a CAI for the Tacoma but other popular brands are Injen, S&B, and aFe.
Mine didnt seem to have any oil
that's a bit odd, should definitely have oil on it
So what's your final consensus my good man?
Doesn’t make a noticeable difference but it’s nice to get since it’s reusable
Bro why are you only getting 7mpg???
big tires & a lot of weight lol
U need a snorkel it does look like u got water in there
For sure. Definitely sucked up some nasty stuff from time to time
Not a fan of oiled filters, as the oil tends to get pulled into the air stream over time, and gums up the MAF. With newer technology and materials today, there are better non-oiled, washable, options on the market
Yeah that's one of my main concerns. If it clogs up the MAF I'll definitely look for a better option.
@@KnightWheelsMedia yeah. In all it's not a huge deal, as you can just clean the sensor with MAF cleaner if you ever have a problem. More of a nuisance is all.
@@nismo613 For sure!!
@@nismo613 For sure! Definitely more worried about the filtering than I am the oil haha though I'm not sure how bad the filter oil is for the engine
@@KnightWheelsMedia Eh, I hear ya. It can't be THAT bad, right? I mean, K&N is a very reputable company, and they have been using these oiled filters for as long as I can remember.
You want another free 5hp? Take out the restrictive carbon filter in the upper airbox!
Ive always wondered about that top piece. I thought it was a just-in-case filter in case the main one somehow let some gunk through
It doesnt give 5hp but it is worth taking it out. Yes remove it
@@thumperbangin2000 Whats the reason why it was in there?
@@ddanj0331 eps emissions shit, make it run cleaner by passing through another charcoal filter, blah blah blah, just guessing
@@ddanj0331 don't listen to someone who's telling you to remove a component in one sentence, and then in the next sentence is "just guessing" at what it's purpose is.
First...Sorry fish!
13 seconds a little late, Robert 💀
You’re second.
@@fishtacoma Damn it! 😢
@@robertyoung8289 Bwahahaha 😂
SO close haha next time!!
The talk about the oil affecting mass airflow sensors is a myth…. It will not affect the sensors at all
Definitely not in the short term at least
Quit ya yappin
No
Minimal difference
Agreed
