    macmost.com/e-1958 When you Mac's hard drive is almost full, you can investigate and figure out what is using the space by simply using the Finder. There is no need to buy a third-party app to manage your hard drive. You start at the top and view all of your folders, digging down to see what is using the most space. Then you'll need to make some decisions about what to remove from yoru drive, being care to only remove files you don't need.

    Very useful video! Gary, can I ask you an off topic question? I recently had a big move and couldn't take any of my old furniture. Is there a computer table or desk that you would recommend for my iMac 27" + MacBook Pro + other stuff? I am looking for something sturdy with the work surface not too far off the ground.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I don't have any recommendations there. That is very subjective. People like different things and have different budgets. Shop around and find one that suits you.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it is. But perhaps you are not in your Home folder? In the Finder, use Go, Home Folder to make sure you are there. Then use Command+j to bring up the options and you'll see it there.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are really no folders you should delete without knowing -- with deep knowledge -- what the folders are used for and what is in them. If you want to clean out space, stick to looking in your own Documents folder where you created your files and know what each one is.

    Thanks very useful video. Cleaned up about 15Gb in one sitting. Follow up question. On 'About this mac' my storage shows about 60% of it being taken by 'other' files. While all my other data (apps, photos, movies, backups, audio) takes roughly 15%. This is a constant problem I have, can't figure out what those 'other' files are. I do'nt save tons of stuff on my computer but I do notice it gets full quite fast. Any other ideas for how to figure out what 'other' files are or anything else I can do to reduce amount of data I have stored?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just follow what I am showing in the video. Start at the top level and get info on folders and see which ones are large and then keep digging down.

      @@macmost What you show in the video does not work for me. I have a 2.15TB drive.1.8 TB are taken up by other. Im operating on just 170MB of free space. I have tried to access the Other using Omni disk Sweeper and also Clean My Mac which I have since deleted. Neither of these apps find the other and using your method doesn't either. It only find the Apps, Users, System files and Library which only add up to 700GB.
      I opened a discussion thread on Apple Communities and a number of seemingly knowledgable people contributed to the discussion (link below). One suggestion was to use Find all Files and run a check on the drive using Etrecheck which I have done. None of this advice has solved my problem.
