I’m hiking across the province of Ontario, Canada in a completely straight line. Whatever obstacle comes my way I have to go straight through it. Streams, muddy fields, farmhouses, neighborhoods, forests, train tracks, highways; you name it, I cross it.

man i knew a straight line mission in north america would be ruined by someone in a car calling the cops. ANYONE walking here is seen as suspicious. king for getting out there and doing this

One of the things is, if you are walking past a lot of farming equipment, it could be seen as you might be eyeing up what they have to later steal it. This is probably the way some farmers will be thinking.

Not everyone is trying to commit crime and it's obvious from this video he's not loitering on people property. Just walking on through. In much of Scandinavia you can walk and hike anywhere including private property as long as you are so many feet away from a residence. Like 50-100 feet away.

You own land to do something positive with that land and to experience a little slice of earth. I'm not saying anybody should be able to loiter on private property. I'm not saying anybody should be able to enter your house or come close to your house.
But if you own 40,000 acres of land and a backpacker needs to cut through a section that's 18 miles from your house. Who's it hurting if they keep moving? Don't be a Karen. Chances are you're never gonna know what even happened.
Man you're really underated, that's some great content with neat editing and storytelling! I always like these small channels that can do the stuff they really love without worrying about getting demonetised. I've considered doing such a challenge myself but I don't want to ruin the privacy of the farmers or worse to be seen as a burglar.

In rural areas , it's much more difficult to hide as everyone looks out their windows , in the city , people don't pay as much attention and tend to look away . Awesome adventure none the less !
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed! The only problem with the city is the myriad of added obstacles and buildings which would be tough to go straight through as opposed to open space.
I live in Essex County and can tell you that I cannot believe how long TH-cam took to suggest this video to me seeing that I have seen every straight line mission from Geowizard. So hyped you did one where I live, that's so cool! The ditches we have are "bus swallowing" as we call the big arterial ones. There is kind of a half truth half urban legend that one bad blizzardy Winter, a car went off the side of the road and into a ditch in winter and they found them the next spring when all the snow melted. I think in truth it was like the next week but still. Annnnyyy ways, I'm rambling. Hope you do another one here and get a straight line next time. (I think police or other authority figures should encourage this as a sport. Your line deviation shouldn't count against you.)

Could just wear a high visibility vest, a hard hat and Cary around a clip boarded and claim your doing some sort of surveying or environmental management lol.
Also though the camo might help you keep a low profile as a Newbrunswicker you are definitely giving off Justin berque vibes.

Part of the issue with doing something like this in the US or Canada is that people really are _crazy_ about trespassing and stuff here compared to the UK and other places people have tried the straight line missions
Totally agree. Might have to consider somewhere in Europe for the next attempt.
Low population density means much more suspicion when you see a stranger out in the middle of nowhere I reckon
@@Wizards0nly but I think an even lower population density, say Wyoming or northern Canada. you can probably stay in the wilderness and out of people's property. or at least out of sight from others

A lot of People in Canada and the US really do have an excessive distrust and fear of other people, and a really colonial concept and idea of land ownership and use. I get being weary if. you live alone and someone is coming near your house, but if they pass right on by they obviously don’t mean harm and people should just leave it alone. Call if someone is lingering and checking out all your shit or messing with stuff, otherwise people need to chill and consider what is actually a threat and what is them being overly fearful and distrustful of people, fear and distrust divides people and communities and causes more unrest than there would be otherwise.
Quite true. Part of me wonders if it would've been like this 50, 100, 150 years ago. Certainly North America has its own colonial history and traditions of homesteading and farming that contribute to this, but also I feel like a lot of community trust and ties have been eroded in the past decades much more than in other parts of the world.

I live on a farm in Ontario and a lot of stuff gets stolen regularly from farmers in the community - people drive from neighbouring towns and the city - I got ripped off a few years ago by small town meth head - so if you're stomping through my fields dressed in camo you better believe I'm riding out on my 4 wheeler with a shotgun to find out what you're up to

The Shortest (and most interesting) straight line path across the USA is an 13 mile walk from the edge of Taan Fjord, up to the peak of Mt St. Elias (18,008 ft) on the Canadian border
I bet someone could do it in a day but I'd probably leave 3 or 4 for weather and acclimitization.

Good for you man, also was recommended this because i’m a huge fan of Tom’s missions. It does bug me that the “Right to Roam” doesn’t exist here in Canada. Definitely a lot less tolerance here despite there being much more space!

May I suggest changing camouflage patterns in the open fieldsto OCP Scorpion or Multicam. Something lighter so youre not as silhouetted. just a smock or pullover that you can quickly remove when you enter the boreal.

FYI according to Geowizards rules you can pause and leave the line and come back another day. so I would have stopping as soon as I was caught and waited for a few days until the heat died down and then start back up in that field.
Might well have worked. Feel as though the risk of getting caught a second time around was too high so I decided against it at the time.
this was exactly what i thought the biggest hangup would be doing a straight-line mission in North America.... Aint no way youre crossing that many peoples yards without someone having a fit about someone simply walking unfortunately. Im still here for the great content regardless. @@horstebreedow8608 yah, but this dude does belong in jail for trespassing everywhere. Dunno why he's in my recommended, I don't condone illegal activity and the moron records himself doing it. Send him up the river. Also yes, in the state I live in if you cross a closed fence line, you can and will be shot by the property owners and it's within their right to do so. It has occurred and will again.
I think if he had stayed clear if the yards it might not have triggered a call. But right through the whole yard just isn't going to be ok. He could have been shot with salt pellets.

its interesting based off of geowizard's videos how some property owners and farmers in the uk seem a lot more accepting of the missions and are happy to approach and ask what you're doing compared to those in canada. i guess people in canada might get spooked more easily and would rather not come out and ask you what you're doing. thinking that you're up to no good and calling the cops straight away instead of approaching you is probably a safer thing to do over there considering how different things are. i feel like the camo outfit might have been the fatal flaw, it definitely made you look more suspicious. kinda surprising considering geowizard's camo seemed to work fine for him. but its really great to see the differences between the two places! great video, keep it up! :)

Cool vid! you know maybe military gear isn't the most unsuspect in canada, I know GeoWizard went with milsurp so it'd look like he might be from the Army, but I think in Ontario I'd prob prefer wearing some stupid neon coloured hiking gear. Military gear might make people think of guns/hunters/shooters since we're close to the US.

You should try a straight line mission in Finland (my country). There is no concept of trespassing in Finland. You have the legal right to walk across anyone's property without permission if you don't damage property or disturb anyone. There is just a crazy number of lakes in Finland so you would need a kayak or a small boat.

@@operationjovy You would have to do it all the way in the north. The Russian border is 200-500km away from the coast. Additionally, the south is packed full of people. Almost all of the 5.5 million residents of Finland live in the south so you'd constantly bump into towns, railroads and freeways. Not to mention the largest lakes like Saimaa and Päijänne that are massive and in the south.

@@operationjovy Sweden and Norway is an option too since both countries have relaxed right to roam laws. However trespassing on growing crops is illegal and whilst you are allowed to trespass in a sense you are not allowed to go inside peoples yards but you wouldnt have to worry about anything else like settings up camp and walking across fields. The issue is mostly finding a suitable route that would still count as going across the country. Im guessing Norway would be easier in that sense but theres mountains everywhere

I feel like your channel will probably grow. Because i watched Geowizard, you got recommended. Also, I'm from Southwestern Ontario and used to trudge around fields as a young kid. I never had any issues, but that was probably because of my age at the time.

I feel like were I to plan something like this, I'd probably create a flyer explaining what I was trying to do, and when, and leaving contact info to let me know if I had permission. Drive around, knock on all the houses, try to speak to them face to face, if not leave the flyer. I feel like most everyone would be fine with it, but that would be necessary due diligence in my book.

What's the difference between a police officer and an OPP officer? I'm from The Netherlands
@@GOAT_GOATERSON OPP is Ontario Provincial Police. Managed by the province and usually seen in areas that don't have a local police

@@GOAT_GOATERSON Only the richer provinces like Ontario and Québec. The rest use the RCMP instead (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) which is managed by the federal government similar to the Bundespolizei in Germany

There is absolutely no need to have laws prohibiting peaceful walking or even camping for a single overnight stay in my opinion. There are already laws that prohibit non peaceful conduct such as causing damage, actively creating a disturbance, and such I don't think it is necessary to add merely walking quietly in an empty field to this list. What exactly is that supposed to protect?

I think if you can see someone then they most likely can and have seen you. It's different if you are in cover like trees.
Not only is North America playing on the highest difficulty, it all looks so open, in the UK there are high hedgerows, stonewall fences, less rectangular pieces of land, less flat terrain, it's just so much easier to hide
and in the uk in many places you are allowed to cross over private land
Simply because someone stepped on your property does not necessarily mean they are trespassing. Instead, anyone who accesses your property without your permission is considered trespassing.
So, trespass is committed when someone enters your property without your permission or a valid reason. While trespassing is typically described as an unauthorized intrusion onto another person’s private property, it can also refer to engaging in illegal activities on that property and then refusing to leave when asked to do so.
There are certain Common laws, Provincial laws, and the Criminal Code about trespassing In Canada. And it’s one of the earliest torts recognized by the law
I wonder what the exact rules are about the duty to inform potential trepassers where the property actually begins and ends. Is the road around your field public? Is the ditch? If the field isn't but the Farmhouse is connected by a public road...is the Postal Service risking their lives?
The way I see it, in the countryside if someone does not want anyone on their land then they should have an adequate wall or fence up to keep people out. I mean personally I would not walk through peoples gardens of their homes, but to me fields and woodlands etc are fair game
I would probably wear a shirt or poster saying, "attempting world record of straight line travel", or something like that just to make bypassers not bother. The camo stuff just makes them more suspicious of muh terrorism.

This made me wonder if it might be possible to cross anything in a totally straight line on public roads. It seems to be *almost* possible across the Oklahoma panhandle, but not quite.
I remember having a look at that exact spot a while back and it seemed almost doable but perhaps not worth risking the minimal amount you wouldn't be on the road for obvious reasons haha. Thanks for watching!

The Dairy FREEZE is a very famous ice cream place in Essex County that has been there for many years. Everyone in Essex County knows about it.

People around here are pretty nosy. Prob drive around all day just following you. At least you got to stop at Dairy Freeze.
Haha yes it was nice to visit even if I never got to enjoy the ice cream.
Tip for straightline missions.. Leave leaflets behind when spotted with an explanation and your phone number..
And maybe put on it your looking for your missing cat.. :P

Dude I appreciate all the effort you straight-liners put into this, but you have to understand. I am a single female and if I saw a man walking across my yard (instead of the road) in military fatigues you can bet your bollocks I'm gonna call the cops. Probably not a popular opinion but you probably scared the crap outta her. I mean if it in reverse and you actually the bad guy people would be saying 'you saw a suspicious man and you DIDN'T call the cops'.

I think UK is really good for doing this kind of thing as apparently trespassing is a civil matter their. If it is a criminal matter in a country, even for properties that aren't fenced of, it seems almost impossible.

Though the idea of this is really cool, you can't blame people for not wanting you on their private property. I think its cool in theory but in practice you can get yourself into a lot of trouble. Personally if I saw someone walking across my property I would tell them to get off.
If I knew ahead of time however, no problem.

Thinking of police in Germany, they would most likely not even register you at all and if someone called they would ask if you pose a threat or behave suspicously or whatever and the most they would do is send someone over just to check. Then they would complain to the caller. :D

Yes I’ve been watching Tom for a while and always loved his content and decided to give the straight line mission a go!
contrary to many of the comments, a lot people in rural ontario are not going to be *too* bothered by someone walking through a field they own when compared to attempting this in the united states. canada doesn't have the same right to roam laws as the UK unless you're on "crown land" in the north of the country (almost none of it exists in this part of ontario), but the general attitude of trespassing is slightly more laid back in canada, at least outside of cities
of course, some may still call the police or will confront you themselves. but if you were straight up honest about what you were doing - walking in a complete straight line across a part of the province for fun - they'll probably think that's cool and let you carry on. of course they can request you don't and you'd have to respect that (likewise the police would insist that you stop). but for the most part the meme that canadians are chill people is true. exceptions would be if your walk was to risk damaging say newly planted crops, then you'd probably have someone saying no or similarly if you risked putting yourself in danger for some reason (fast moving water, farm equipment, earth moving equipment, large holes etc) that would be problematic. but odds are most people you meet would be like the guy in the video who would just be like "oh yeah walk through the field if you want, just mind the mud" haha

Although I can't say I would or wouldn't do the same if I saw someone crossing my property like that. But I for sure wouldn't want the guy charged with anything if that's legit all he's doing is crossing the province in a straight line...
as a woman who lived alone on 100 acres a good distance from neighbours, I would have called the cops too. it's pretty disturbing to think some strange man might be walking right by my house without permission.
Yeah, I appreciate the straight line missions but you have no right to get upset that someone called the cops on you for trespassing.
Hello, thank you for your comment. I understand your feelings and want to make it clear I didn’t want to scare or disturb anyone while doing this mission. Going forward it seems as though seeking permission from landowners such as yourself is a must for these types of adventures.

In the dark, maybe. A masked man? Sure. But ANYONE? If your fields aren't closed off by fence and there's no crops, I'm crossing that if i need to.

Cops like to stretch what is and isnt legal, i could be wrong but as far as i know you need to be told by a person or sign to leave or stay out youre not just assumed to be trespassing because you didnt ask before hand

Your attempting to cross in a straight line from one lake in Ontario to the next, sorry but it’s pretty cheesy calling that crossing the province. I get it though Ontario is absolutely massive it’s not possible to do it.
Hey Geoff, thanks for your comment. I understand this may not be the route that encompasses the most complete crossing of Ontario but as you mentioned it is simply too large in certain areas and I felt this was an appropriate route for my first ever attempt at such a mission.

Yes Wales and Scotland in particular seem to be popular choices for the straight line enthusiasts.
Even though I understand the frustration, especially in the heat of the moment, I'm not sure if blaming the "Karen" that much is justified. It's likely she got worried since she had no idea what you were up to, and thus decided better safe than sorry. I'm not sure what exactly she might have been thinking, but people can get creative with their fears when faced with unusual situations like this. But still, it's understandable on both sides imo
I agree with you that the fear of not knowing is why people are bothered by missions like these, but there's a simple solution - she could've pulled alongside him and asked, instead of going straight to the cops.
@@0M0rty True, but she also might have thought she could be putting herself in danger that way. Probably kind of irrational since it was during the day and he was just out in the open not trying to be hidden, but I’m just speculating
@@WiiAndii Yeah, completely agree with you there. The lady didn't know if he was a simple hiker or a possible burglar on the loose, you can see both parties' points. Most hikers don't veer onto properties.

Hey WiiAndii, yes you are right I may have gotten carried away in the heat of the moment but I very much understand her worries and respect her decision. This has definitely been a good learning experience and can serve as an example for anyone wanting to try such a mission!
I would have just ignored the cop and just kept on walking. I don't think he would have been willing to keep chasing you to different points along the journey, and I highly doubt he would have persued you on foot. I mean cops are lazy and eat donuts and stuff. If he had caught up with you, and asked why you didn't stop you could simply say you wasn't aware of him and did not hear him (he wouldn't be able to say different - plausible deniability)
Farm arson is a thing in Ontario. Many barns get lit up by pyros every year; I know of 3 in my small area in the last few years. You're lucky you didn't get killed, or at least severely beaten. As fun as the challenge sounds, it's a fucking dumb, dangerous idea. Next time just pick a line that's only bushwhacking.
