I’m hiking across the province of Ontario, Canada in a completely straight line. Whatever obstacle comes my way I have to go straight through it. Streams, muddy fields, farmhouses, neighborhoods, forests, train tracks, highways; you name it, I cross it.

I love how geo wizard has created his own genre. The retro retro music and head go pro. This mission is different to the uk as we won’t have straight roads like in Canada, apart from remains of old Roman roads.

That mind blowing and false graphic at 0:02 of a seemingly NNE route from MN to Hudson bay hooked me hard even though I had some real doubts. Great run anyway.

Ya that's just Essex County.
Because crossing anywhere else is genuinely impossible, and part of the challenge is actually finding a crossing thats possible. The rest of Ontario is so saturated with small lakes and other obstacles there's no possible straight line.

I must admit that crossing private properties is not my favorite part. Potentially having to explain what the heck you are doing in someone's backyard is so stressful and I'm not even doing the walking! Your "nothing fishy, I belong here, I'm a professional" attitude at the first crossing made watching it actually a less stressful. I'm curious what the next episodes bring 👍
Was definitely a bit nervy at times! Part 2 even more so and will be out very soon!

@A W GeoWizard Norway had minimal private properties, but I wouldn't classify that as "going on a long walk". Long walks typically avoid nearly getting stuck in a bog.

The big issue here is that we don't have the same rights of accessing land as they do in europe.

Prince Edward Island has a few roads that go straight thru the province just like this part of Ontario

Would love if you did more provinces like Halifax(Maybe from north to south since it's so narrow).
Hey thanks for watching, there are definitely plenty of great places in Canada and the US to try one out for sure. PEI and Halifax in particular as you mentioned being smaller than the likes of Ontario, Quebec etc.

My Gouy you’re brave. Walk around in that camo outfit. you look damn identical to that guy in Moncton 7-8!years ago who walked around the city popping off 4 cops dead. I’m shocked the OPP didn’t grab you. Tho I am only 4 minutes into the video so who knows maybe that does happen lol
That looks so stressful and dangerous. I'd rather try my luck doing these missions across remote areas.
Hey Scotty totally agree in hindsight it might have been better going somewhere more remote. The only trouble is that the more remote areas of Ontario are quite far and would be really difficult to cross in a straight line. Maybe a different area should be considered for future missions.
@@operationjovy The main issue of northern Ontario is that you'll need to carry a dinghy or something to float with you for the entire trip because there are so many lakes no matter which direction you go. Unless you want to swim and be wet all the time. 🥶
Nice! As a non-north American I started off "ah, it's all straight roads on the map, just walk up a road for 35km" ... then when you're walking past sentry pillboxes at 16:35 (?) and a racoon that I'm guessing has been shot? Very entertaining! 👍😄
The one on the farm at 18:35 does look like a racoon. That one on the road at 16:35 has more of a feline shape and size, it has the much narrower shoulders and more oval shaped torso of a cat rather than the broad shoulders and rounder torso of a racoon. So sadly I think a poor kitty might have had a run in with a car either that or someone has put poison out for the racoons and the cat got to it too. Sadly people have been known to use cat food as the bait to poison racoons, of course this is not a good idea if there are cats present since they tend to eat cat food (Or any kind of meat or meat smelling food) presented in bowls too especially ones used to being fed by humans. So if it is poison someone should have known better but I guess some people are either too ignorant or too reckless to care.

Dont know if i would call this crossing Ontario, but its really cool and tough in itself. I was looking at some lines across ontario as well but have never attempted one. i actually looked at this region that you crossed as being a good one due to the straight roads that could be followed for at least a small part of the journey.

As someone from Ontario and thought about the mission years back, this i couldn't count as going across, you still had land on the other side of st clair, aswell keep drawing that line you get up into thunder bay. Also without drawing the line myself you may have had an island on the erie side of canada. Cheeky attempt but not close to going across Ontario. Was nice seeing you start at the park less than a km from my grandmas house, spend some time fishing there when i visit her.
Hey thanks for watching. Fair point as well I agree it could have been longer, I just wasn't sure how it was going to go being the first time every trying it so I settled on this route. Nice area near your grandmother as well. Might have to return for some fishing then!
I think the definition of crossing a country or territority has to be better defined. You could technically "cross" England by going way out to the westernmost tip of Cornwall and just walking across a little spit of land, but it doesn't feel like that should count. Probably the quality of the crossing should be measured by how close you are to having 50% of the area of the country on each side of the line. But then there are countries like the Maldives that are just a bunch of islands, you could bisect them easily by boat...
I think it counts as borders are drawn on the map over the water. I've also spent time trying to draw line that crosses border to border of provinces and its either go through towns and farms or 500km of wilderness

Would you honestly say doing a tiny 33km stretch really counts as 'crossing' the state?
I thought that delivering pamphlets that explain your mission to farmers would be good but then thought that would probably stir up some cantankerous property defender.
Yes that does seem like a reasonable thing to do to eliminate uncertainty while doing the actual mission but as you mentioned it could backfire quite quickly.

Yes there's usually a snowfall or two in early April just to keep you on your toes. The farther north the more you can expect as you rightly mentioned.
I love these straight line videos but I dont fail to think what the hell would I do if I lived in a house that someone had to go though doing one of these... like I am eating my breakfast peacefully and a cammo guy jumps my fence and walks foward out of nowhere lmao jesus christ

You almost want to be carrying a sign or something though that doesn't freak out anyone as your going through their yards around their rural houses and such. To the untrained eye from a house window, they might think its something military going on.

Grab a blade of grass at one end and put the other end on the fence. Slowly slide it over the fence so your fingers come closer. It conducts but with a lot of resistance, so if it is electric, you will somewhen start to feel a pulse in the fingertips but it won't hurt you.

It would probably be easier to tackle northern Ontario as this is all private property down there. Luckily nobody down there is likely to shoot you, probably just yell at you and call the cops.
I'm impressed he tackled this in the winter though, better for walking as it keeps you cool but staying warm camping in ontario during the winter , for me requires a very large sleeping bag
The idea behind the winter timing was to limit the amount of thick bushes and shrubs I'd have to cross and avoid trampling crops in full season. Did make for a chilly night though as you pointed out!
@@fustercluck2460 Northern Ontario's terrain would be hugely more difficult terrain-wise, and would be way longer.

me three. i would think possibly PEI might be doable? but haven't really looked closely at it. and I'm from the opposite coast so what do i know :D definitely isn't doable out here on vancouver island, the terrain and underbrush wouldn't let you get very far!

Good question, it seemed to have worked well for GeoWizard in his attempts crossing the likes of Wales and Norway so I decided to adopt it for a Canadian version.
Like other commenters I am also from Michigan and it’s crazy how I live less than 50mi 80km away from you. This video showed how similar Ontario is to the Midwest. I don’t be afraid to cross people property if you are 30-40+ meters away from their house close to the road. When I ride my bike through rural areas in Michigan because I don’t want to be close to the fast rural cars 90kph I bike 5m+ away from the road. Aslong as your not circling their house or staring at their window people won’t care
If your just crossing from point A to point B.Canada is vey beautiful I would like to visit again. Last time I visited when I was 6 years old and went through Canadain traffic All the way to fort Erie where we stayed in a second home my uncle owned and went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls it was nice. I am 19 now and would like to visit Canada
