    4:49 I agree, it's good that the cyclist tries to help out larger vehicles who might be delayed and find it harder to pass than cars, but it does depend on the situation. Especially in 20 - 30 zones buses stop frequently anyway, so if you as a cyclist are going at 20 it isn't usually worth facilitating an overtake. However if the speed limit was higher and you know that the large vehicle could make quite a bit of progress if you let them past, then as cyclists we could consider helping them out.

    You have got a good, like minded , NON deluded cycling viewer, there , Ashley. When I was in the suburbs of Glasgow on Tuesday, I had , for as long as I can remember , or maybe for the first time , a cyclist coming up on the inside while I was slowing down to turn left at a junction, so , again , I had your two channels in my thoughts as I kept an eye on the cyclist to my left , but he passed the point I was going to turn before I turned ,anyway so a non event, which is what we all want.

    0:10 which is one reason why cyclists are less of a risk than drivers, their speed is inherently limited.
    As for the slightly goading Strava comment, it's unlikely any cyclist is going to be riding flat out on that recreational trail. If there's a segment on it, you can flag it for removal.
    In general, some decent riding on display there, would have pretty much done the same.

    I cycle often, used to do it daily. A few years ago I tried out a couple of groups to add a social aspect to it. The riding of others in the group was largely awful. Few shoulder checks, and generally inconsiderate and dangerous. Granted this is a microcosm view of cyclists as I didn't always see issues and it wasn't everyone in the groups, but it put me off group riding. I'd often move left and wave cars thru if I could see up ahead was clear. Other cyclists seemed too focused on Strava times as you've said

    7:38 another thing I'd mention about staying back here is that the cyclist isn't hidden behind the van as they go through the junction, meaning traffic turning right from the oncoming lane can see the cyclist much easier and makes it less likely that a crash will happen.

      It is a great philosophy but difficult to practice when you've been "cut up" for the umpteenth time during the one journey, whether in the car or on the bike. Sometimes it's good to have a serious swearing session, if only to the steering wheel/handlebars, just to let off some steam.

    More from Twickenham, Teddington, Sheen Lane, Sheen Road, Kingston town centre. Again, why nothing from Richmond Park (except the brief clip of the shared 10mph limit Middle Road/Quietway?). Weird, given how popular Richmond Park is with sports cyclists. Perhaps something to do with the 20mph limit - that sports cyclists say doesn’t apply to them, so they often undertake & overtake cars doing 20mph, invariably closer than 5ft and often into into oncoming traffic (i.e. shoot the gap).

    What?!? Nice video of a calm, courteous cyclist sharing the road and showing how it's done. However, I'm in the U.S. and absolutely would have gone on the sidewalk (pavement) instead of waiting at roadworks in a cloud of exhaust fumes. It's odd that pavement riding is not allowed there, while here every child first learns to ride on our sidewalks. You drop speed to about 5 mph when/if there's any danger of pedestrians popping out. Then just use the 'have they seen me' methodology to navigate safely.

Many people buy a bike and because there isn't any registration,insurance or licence required feel like they can ris=de any way they want to even if their riding puts themselves or others in danger.

    3:47 I think they did a good job (second cyclist a little less so), but as the first cyclist I think I would have stopped right there where they are at my timestamp. I tend to focus on being in the driver's right mirror, so I wouldn't have got closer when the van slowed and stopped. I would have made it a little more difficult for the car to go around me, but I would have been on the driver's side of the van for their entire reverse (especially if the van driver reversed around the corner instead). I'd have to move for the lorry, but that's fine.
    7:18 I would have kept going and filtered, but not past the indicating van. Also, when I know the traffic light is about to change my aim is to arrive at a point where I am visible through the front windscreen of a vehicle stopped in traffic before it starts moving so I can keep rolling and save my knee from starting off again. I would have probably ended up just in front of the dark Citroën (that they poorly started indicating later is irrelevant, but I'd stay behind them had they indicated earlier).

    I'm curious to know if this good cyclist is also a car driver. Because often, roadcraft via one method of getting around will carry on over to another. Also, this cyclist seems quite aware of how motor vehicle drivers see things. For myself, I even find that various parts of my own roadcraft carry over to when I'm a pedestrian.

  • @Nickle314
    @Nickle314 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    5:30. You need to position yourself so the van driver has lots of opportunities to see you. You need to stop in the mirror zone where you can be seen.
    Aother one with lots of parked cars. Yes, you need to be outside the door zone. But equally, and you see it with more nervous cyclists, they pass a car immediately move to the left, because its safe - right? Then up comes another parked car and they have to swerve back into the road. You are far better saying out, and only moving to the left if threatened by a car behind. Clear hand signals, when you are moving left, saying please over take now makes a difference as well as dressing like a lemon with christmas lights.
    This is also why straight roads, and bus lanes are good. You are going faster, so longer to be seen.

  • @ibs5080
    @ibs5080 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a situation such as at around 6:57 when filtering past a van or any vehicle that substantially blocks sight lines, I may be inclined to slow a little more, cover my bike brakes, as well as sound my bell. Especially for the possibility of pedestrians crossing. And unlike car horns where there's the possibility of others taking offense even when the horn is used correctly, I feel that the likelihood of a similar misunderstanding is considerably lower for a bike bell.

    • @Chigleybus
      @Chigleybus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But do be prepared for "harassment" from drivers behind you in these situations, even if you are capable of riding at 20mph plus. A good example is the perimeter road of Sefton Park in Liverpool. Cars parked almost right the way round on both sides these days, especially in the summer months. But you'll still feel plenty of pressure to keep left as people try to force past. It's an occupational hazard of choosing the bike for fitness/leisure/commuting I'm afraid. ps Sefton Park is 20mph all the way round but few people drive at that speed.

    I think you have a fair way of driving either bike or motor bike. Where i live it is almost totally different although using the same side of the road. Hi Ashley, thanks for the great content and your very nuanced look at how we have to share the space we have and to create the best flow for everyone.
    I've been watching your other channel for some years now but I do not drive, don't even have a license and no ambition to ever get one so it felt a bit funny watching your driving instructor videos. I'm a keen user of bicycles everyday and cycle through big parts of Europe (and a bit outside) every summer and not a big fan of cars, but we do need some unfortunately, though I can understand one's enthusiasm for these machines.
    Also I've just been enjoying driving fail videos, but was very happy to see that someone can also upload nice driving videos. Very Positive!
    I think you can always become a zen teacher if you would ever have enough of driving.

      @@jakescustoms Agreed and not saying they were wrong at all, just my way of doing things when I was on two wheels. To be honest, I was usually panting and wheezing whenever I stopped anywhere on my bike so was always grateful for the break 😉
      I do miss it occasionally and wish I could still be on them for a Sunday exploration somewhere but alas the body, or more specifically the legs, are failing me and wouldn’t be happy if I did

    Ashley, I think your content is top notch and we should all be making the roads a safer place. Keep up the good work.
    I've added my comment also today to vent my frustration and question if more reforms are needed on the roads. So to my story.
    This morning I was walking my dog with my young daughter (6). Our village is set a long a fairly busy road on a hill but there are no footpaths (It has plenty of visibility as it's not a windy road). As we walking around 2 parked cars a large group of cyclists (approx 20) in single to 2 abreast, came down the hill and all passed us closely (if I had stuck my arm out I would have hit them) at speed. My daughter was petrified and started crying. I shouted at them to slow down but was ignored. We carried on up past the car to get a bit safer and calm her down. Behind the cars is a speed awareness sign and the next group were recorded doing 41mph. Not 1 of them slowed down or even turned around to make sure everything was ok even though they saw her crying, saw them passing us closely and me shouting to slow down. The speed limit is 30mph.
    I know there is no speed limit for cyclists but this just seems plain wrong. Our road is a hot spot for cycling groups and I've seen many a narrow accident as residents leave their driveways either by car or foot. I'm also fully aware that this is a vehicle issue also but should cyclists have to by law have a Speedo fitted and not exceed the limit? A bike can do a lot of damage at those speeds and feels so wrong to me that it's acceptable by law. I doubt it would stop people from breaking the speed limit but hopefully it would make people think more about their actions.

    I think there is a great distinction that can be made here, and that is there are ‘people who ride bikes’ and those who are ‘cyclists’. The former generally being people who don’t wear helmets, on rented bicycles, wearing a delivery bag on their back, and/or illegal battery powered moped/“bicycle”. Generally speaking it’s these people who give cyclists a bad name, and the reason much of the public hate them. It’s these people you often see that don’t follow the rules or show consideration.

      As you watch a fellow driver sitting in lane 2 of the motorway in front of you not overtaking anyone, or a driver on the phone, or a driver breaking the speed limit, do you think to yourself, that carist is giving me and all other carists a bad name? No? Why not?
      Cyclists aren't some homogenous group. They're people getting around, and it doesn't matter what they choose to wear or how they carry their bags or whether they own or have rented their transport. Like carists and vannists and lorryists, some do it better than others, the fundamental difference is that the consequence of a mistake on their part rarely results in another's loss of life or extensive damage to property which you see with almost all motor vehicle incidents.
      When I'm on my bike or in my car, I don't represent my fellow carists and cyclists, and they don't represent me.

      Good on you if you have made some money. However, if you live in London as your name suggests you’ll surely know that in most cases driving is simply the inferior way of getting around. Not only is it polluting (both the air and in terms of noise) and ruins road surfaces very quickly, but it’s extremely slow and expensive. I have a car, but I almost always choose my nice E-bike, which gets me far more reliably to my destination!
