  • This video is explaining my meaning of a reliable engine. There are many misconceptions in the community on what a reliable car is. Well I give you many examples of what its like from my point of view. I did mention IAG in this video, however they are currently in the final testing stages for the Baffle they are coming out with. I will update with a link once its available.

Reliable - won't leave you stranded, random things don't fall off (cough, bmw), engine doesn't throw a bearing (cough, mercedes), you don't get any stupid leaks, no codes, car just runs.
Low maintenance - can do oil changes, coolant, brakes, ac stuff, electrical, all in your garage with parts from autozone or walmart without causing damage to the car.
At least on these two metrics, subaru is relatively reliable, easily in the top 5 (toyota, honda, subaru, mazda, lexus).
The reason some people think that subaru's aren't reliable, is probably because people beat on them and treat them like crap. Just because the internet says its reliable, doesn't mean you stop changing your oil etc. Why anyone thinks that is an okay way to treat your car is beyond me. My fiance, before I even met her, changed her own oil ever 3k miles on a simple little ford. She doesn't know anything about cars, but she bought a car, consulted a mechanic her dad knows, and followed the instructions for scheduled maintenance. The ford has 250k miles on it. Bores look brand freaking new.
Don't treat your car like its disposable. If you throw 5k in mods into your subaru and it blows up, you are out a car, transportation to work, and money for repairs. Just stop, get some help.

The reason people say FA24 is are unreliable is because we're mourning our losses you used to be able to go buy a Honda Civic with the d series engine and immediately put a 20 psi boost through that engine and it would be as reliable as the day it rolled off the factory with 200,000 miles on it And 20 PSI boost same goes for Mazda protege and really all of the '90s 4 cylinder engines SR20 all those engines would just handle the modifications and now we're getting served engines that can't even survive stock power through right hand turns it's not about the car on being unreliable it's about what we've lost with reliability

I don’t think any modern car can compare to the older JDM cars as far as tuning goes. But there are a plethora of FA24 owners making over 400hp with bolt on’s. The new WRX is making big gains with minimal effort. As far as the 86 goes it’s confirmed that it can hold 600hp on stock trans and cooler. I would say that’s a hell of an engine still. And I most people still track their cars without the right turn issue including myself. I think that was just a few people not the majority.

I was in a local gt86 group (older model with fa20 but similar problems). There are about 20-25 members and in a period of about 3 years, 3-4 of them had failed engines because of oil starvation problems. I know for a fact that 1 incident was on track and the other 1 was just random for no reason. Not sure about the others. Misha Charoudin's gr86 also died recently and it wasn't even on track if I remember correctly. I was considering getting a GR86 but I just don't trust these subaru engines. If I didn't care about mods (and warranty) then I might've done it because we also get up to 10 years extended Toyota warranty here. At this stage I'll rather go for a GR yaris/corolla or a type R. It's sad because these cars are amazing to drive and in my opinion the GR86 is one of the sexiest cars available right now.

Agreed they are one of the best cars. But if you are mentioning 20-25 within that time out of all the vehicles sold that’s still a small sample size compared to models sold as a whole. It sucks that some cars fail for now reason but I have 2 subies that I use way more than the average driver and had no such issues. If you like to mod your car there are low cost mitigations out there now to combat the issues which a plan on upgrading to before I get back on the track. As we sit here now I’m pushing 30k on my 86 and 0 issues. And 110k on my WRX. I would love for you to reconsider and don’t miss out on a car you love brotha!! I can tell you it’s definitely worth the purchase.

@@iManual6peed I meant that 3 or 4 members in a group of 20-25 members had engine failures. It may be lack of maintenance, abuse or just bad luck but it really left a sour taste in my mouth for these engines. This is just my experience though. Obviously I've also heard of lots of owners with zero problems and some even reaching 200k+ trouble free miles on their previous gen cars, but I can't shake the feeling. I have 2nd generation BRZ over 1 year. The only modifications I planning is a Cat Back Exhaust. It is a lot of fun and so far reliable.
Many people are having issues with modifications, lack of maintenance and extreme track use.
If you modify your on your own. I would wait until the warranty is over and some time has passed on the reliability of more major modifications. For example a Supercharger.
You hit the nail on the head with a younger crowd and lack of maintenance. People not checking oil is inexcusable.
Track use is an interesting one. You should be using a thicker oil and probably overfilling at a minimum. The other issue is people upgrading handling with 200 treadwear tires and suspension. Most cars that can handle this hard will have oil issues. You need to modify the engine to handle this and the research from the aftermarket is continuing.

I would absolutely love a GR86/BRZ, but my concern with buying any new car nowadays is how these things will do out of warranty and at 100k miles, 150k miles, so on so forth, especially when I see a lot of forum posts of owners who take super duper care of their stock GRs with low miles and the occasional track day and have their motors spin a bearing, I'm just really put off by a lot of these failures on the stock powertrain, as that last usecase is exactly what I would love to do, I don't care for modding really. I really want one of these so badly, especially new since we can see how so many owners beat on these badly, I would prefer to be the one to break it in, to do all of the maintenance on it throughout it's lifetime.

These cars are gems in the automotive community and are very reliable in stock form. The FA24 is no different and fixed the only main issue that plagued the previous motor. I would get a new one that purchase an extended warranty if you need a peace of mind. The only time there were engine failures were from very experienced track drivers taking long right handers. Based on your use case you will be just fine owning this car.

3:30 I still find this argument kinda stupid, "why did you mod an engine thinking it'd still be reliable." that's because there are v8s and straight 6's that can be boosted, supercharged, tuned etc, with a stock bottom end and not have anything forged, and have nothing go wrong. But I've also seen many many MANY subaru's completely stock blow a gasket, get coolant in the engine, etc. I don't care about meticulous care bs, people bring their BMW's or Subaru's to their dealers and money no object, it's still time that their car is down for repairs. The only real saving grace is that lonnng warranty for not modding the engine.

Right on! The truth is that there have only been TWO engine failures do to RTV. Considering many of these cars are used for track racing, this is an insignificant failure rate. Whenever cars are raced, there are going to be engine problems. Subaru has used the FA24 engine for many, many years. These cars are marketed for track use and if they can’t hold up to that it’s a problem. You even get a track membership with the car right? The reason I do not trust Subaru’s products is because the owners will never be honest. I know Honda/Toyota/ etc. guys who modify their cars and track them reliably and don’t need to make videos like this. Whenever it comes to Mitsubishi guys they will be honest with me about their issues. When it comes to Subaru guys it’s just all these excuses and talking points. If it’s not head gaskets like back in the day it’s RTV now. It’s “my individual car doesn’t have those issues” but we can see many others who have issues. My individual car that’s unreliable by all standards hasn’t given me any issues but I know it gives most people issues. Subaru guys are the only people I can never get a clear answer with.

Yes it’s true they give you 2 track days and push you in a way to take it to the track, but the majority of the buyers will not do so and just drive on the street and use it as a daily. That’s where you will find no issues with the car. I have hyper miled this car and still no issues. And remember if you modify a car it’s not the company’s fault if you mess up from what was originally tuned to do. @@iManual6peed The problem isn’t what you think I’m alluding to. Of course if you modify the car they will most likely void it. I’m not even talking in terms of the warranty really it’s irrelevant. It’s an issue specifically with the Subaru community in particular. For example like I mentioned I have an unreliable car in the same category more of less. I daily drove it for years and had limited issues (like most cars). BUT I know if I were to put it on a track or push it hard I’d have to do a few mods (which the community recommends and doesn’t downplay). My issue with Subaru products and your community is as perspective buyer; many cannot get clear answers where we need them whether it is a 40 year old Subaru or a 5 year old. For example in my real life I wanted an older WRX that has verifiable head gasket issues proven by mechanics on TH-cam. When I was in the process of purchase people from your community kept downplaying the issues. The thing that strayed me away was my none car guy mechanic who dealt with a few of them. We know if you don’t mess with the engine 9/10 it will be okay that’s most cars. But no one keeps their engine stock, people beat on their cars and people will take a car that is marketed to got to the track to the track. Subaru knew and knows this but it seems to me that they really don’t care and their customers will keep downplaying that fact. This is why I see why people call Subaru a cult sometimes. I love the Subaru community’s togetherness but I don’t feel comfortable joining it. My 2jz gives me no issues and I battle test it, my DSM gave me tons of issues but DSM guys were honest and told me before hand, muscle car guys super honest but for whatever reason I have to always cross verify with mechanics and dissatisfied owners with Subaru. I love the community everywhere I go you guys are funny and cool but it’s the only community I and many others can’t trust. Not even talking about you in particular in both my post by the way.

You made a lot of sense with valid points. I've had my 86 for three months now and have no intention of modifying the engine because I can't afford to invalidate the warranty. Here in England Toyota have an ingenious warranty plan. Initially you have three year cover, but if you service your car with Toyota after the third year they will extend the warranty for another year up to ten years and a 100,000 miles. So for most people here with a GR86 we have ten years cover. So Toyota are backing up their reliability reputation.

The thing with reliability is what was advertised and intended to do. All cars should be reliable as a daily driver. The 86/BRZ was intended to be a daily driver sports car and a track/drift car while stock.
Its like buying a pickup, SUV or a truck and was advertised to treck mountains, carry cargo or crossing rivers and deserts. As a daily driver, these cars should work perfectly fine. But if the engine blows up while doing what was advertised, would you consider the pickup/etc. reliable?

    • @iManual6peed
      @iManual6peed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That’s a very good question. My answer is yes it’s still reliable because the engine failure only happened to a few 1st gen 22’s. I see a lot of 86’s when I go to the track and they don’t fail performing both at all. What I’m learning the more I get into going to track days is that you should have mods on most if not any vehicle you want to track extensively. Because everyone’s driving habits are different it would be impossible to compensate for all type of driving. The 23s have not blown up to my knowledge. I hope I explained that well enough. Thanks for making this video, as someone who’s currently saving up and has been eying at this car, I found it to be quite helpful. My biggest concern like many others and what I think the issue is if this is just track thing where people are just driving it way too hard, and if they blow the engine and daily the car claim it’s unreliable.
I’m personally just interested in driving this on curvy roads and wanting to do basic upgrades such as wheels, tires, breaks, and cosmetic looks, (maybe a turbo later on). I get that doing a turbo has its risks, but even compared to people turning the car, somehow the other main issue is getting attention which is weird. The last thing though is that I hope on the they 2024 fix the design flaw.

One of the main mods that you can do to a car that won't negatively impact the reliability of the car but does increase the driving experience is a catback or axle back exhaust. I think they make it much easier to shift based off of sound and they make the car more fun to drive. However, when you start introducing power mods and start tuning the engine, that's when you run into problems or should at least expect to encounter problems at some point. I think that Subaru vehicles, especially the WRX, get a bad rep for being unreliable but that's because these cars are oftentimes improperly modified, not maintained correctly, and driven hard.

The reasons why Subaru, in particular the WRX/STI, got the bad “unreliable” reputation was because people thought they can mod them with no tune.. even a simple down pipe required a tune. This is true in the early 2000’s with the bug, blob and hawk eye. They seen evo’s mod and reliability and thought the WRX /sti could follow suit. You never see any other Subaru model ever brake down like that… why? Cause no one mods or pushes them to their limits.

    • @iManual6peed

I'm sorry, but you are making a lot of excuses for this car when you say things like this is probably a car people keep for 3 years and trade in, so don't worry about reliability. What I want from a car is true long term reliability. Like an MX5 that can run and run for decades and be fine with typical maintenance. And people want to track the GR86 because it's what it was advertised to do. Now I don't believe that every GR86 is going to blow up the moment you track it, but compared to many cars out there, it is not reliable. And when you think about sustainability, a car that doesn't last for decades and just ends up in junk yards is a wasteful product.

There is no one out there stating that they have issues unless of one specific event which is the high G right turns which you will never do on the street. I have tracked this car and aware of what I need to do to mitigate the issue, other than that there is no reliability issues with this car.

I think reliability depends on how the car is being used or how the driver/owner treats the car. There are design flaws from the factory which definitely not a problem for daily use or spirited drive for a bit. I’d say either stock or not if you hit that design flaw spots it will go. My car is completely stock, well maintained, I had no problems going quite hard on mountain roads once in a while. Until 50k miles on a track, just after 1 warmup lap I heard rodknock. My guess was probably high G corners. I wasn’t going over 4k since it was warmup but the track had a lot of high speed corner and I think I went 110-120km/h (70-80mph) on those corners and it just gone.
