I blew a fuse in my GR86!!!, here is what happened.
if we're talking brand new cars? miata and the 86 for sure but used is honestly the best way to go for any beginner enthusiast since they'll probably be working on it for the first time as well
Agreed the ease of maintenance definitely played a factor in this list lol
Looking at the 86 for a new purchase the design keeps catching my eyes if I wanted to haul a$$ I would have kept my scat with mods. No matter how much money someone puts in their ride there will always be someone out there faster.
I got a great deal on my ND3, otherwise I would have been perfectly happy in a used ND2. Though that new screen in the ND3 looks way better.
@@everythingmainecooncat4938 true it does. Honestly I though they should have made a GT trim that resembles the premium interior of the Mazda 3. That would have been a breath of fresh air. But I agree can’t go wrong with either one.
In my eyes I see it as the more intensive and complex and intrusive the mod is the more it classifies as a “heavy mod” or “heavily modified” Like changing out brakes and tires is easy so i definitely wouldn’t say that’s heavily modified, its modified for sure but it didn’t really take all that much work to change you know?
I get what you mean but here is an example. It took me 2 hours to mod my WRX. It really wasn’t that difficult at all and now I make over 330hp. I believe if your mod literally changes the way your car behaves than it’s heavily modified if not than it’s minor.
It is because Subaru and Toyota aren't warranting the defective oil pickup tube issue, causing engine failures! Also, the manual trans 2nd gear are weak. Subaru Toyota will not warranty these defective weak points on their cars.
My biggest complaint would be TH-cam content over hyping things for views like the GR Corolla fire thing. Gives a total false impression of the scale of the issue.
I completely agree with you!!! That is similar to oil starvation issue.
I push my tc daily 😂😂😂😂
Aint nobody hatin on the gr86 it aint no bmw
Click bait. It's a great car.
hit up the reddit post lol people hate on this car something serious lol that's what made me make this video. I am trying to defend it.
You should consider getting a lavalier mic and trying the camera tripod approach more. Thanks for the perspective & I appreciate the authenticity ✌️
@@owlauxGR looking it up now!! I appreciate the feedback!
I've been enjoying my GR86 the same as the day I got it last year and the best part is that I'm the first owner and probably the last. A lot of other GR86/BRZ owners in my area have sold or traded theirs because they want "more," but that's their preference.
@@EligosIV you and I both!!! I don’t see myself getting rid of this car 😂
Big on pushing people to do their own fkn homework 🗣🗣🗣
A lot of bigger auto reviewers make judgement calls based on what would be easiest for the consumer instead of what would truly in the best interest of the consumer and people really just need to form their own opinions of things based on what’s in front of them instead of running to someone that doesn’t even know they exist for advice on a car
@@gibsonisthename yes sir, we just have to encourage the masses to use the brain that they have and not let us think for them!!
Genuinely if a car isn’t making over 350 - 400 then I don’t think it should come with rev matching like the only cars that should come with it are cars that are seriously used for track work like Porsches (everyone should suck it up and learn how to rev match)
@@gibsonisthename agreed, they will be happier when they can actually do it themselves.
As a GR86 owner, i can honestly say i love the community around this car. ONLY those that "get it" GET IT! I have NO problem if Edgar haired Ricers and/or Egotripped hellcat muscle heads ignore these cars. This car is for those that get it.
@@H1ghMess I second that statement!! We said.
I have a 24 BRZ and the only thing it needs is a heated steering wheel for those cold winter mornings! Everything else is just right.
Great car for Touge / Track / Autocross enthusiast. Outside of that, it will be hard for non car people or even tourists to understand how great the car is. Unfortunately due to social media there's an entire generation of car tourists that exist who were raised to believe "power" is everything. No point in getting bent out of shape or even trying to educate that type. There are those of us who understand and would buy this car, and there are those who will not. To each their own. Good video.
I just got a 24 black premium and I couldn’t be happier.
as a manual driver that statement about actually knowing how to drive a car hit
That surprised me the first time hearing in the States, you learn to drive manual by grinding experience points. "Wait! You guys really don't know how to drive a stick?!" The rest of the west, it is a separate licence catagory or you can't drive stick shift.
I’m 52 so unfortunately I raised the avg age but I’ll swear by this car! I traded in an Alfa Romeo Guilia Ti for ‘22 BRZ. I turned down a ‘12 Mustang CS & ‘23 Mustang GT from my mom. My brother is hinting I can get his C8 for whatever I sell my Subie for. I’m leaning to saying no. They are all faster but none give the feels or have that fun personality that I look for. I don’t want to bore anyone else with the short novel of Y but if asked… Basically nothing is more pure than sub 3000 lbs. with exception of S2K & Porsche no other lightweight car have the power to make that aspect fun. So I use to go sports car to muscle car & back. This is the car I’ve looked for my entire life. Will buy another unless I have Emira $
Well said sir. I always say it’s the feeling you get with the vehicle not just horsepower numbers. I will do my best to educate
I have one as a daily and have gotten nothing but compliments. Most the hate is from people who’ve never driven them or are spoiled with cars that cost over double what the GR86 does.
@@rasundesilva6088 I agree most who have driven the car have different takes on it than others lol. I always say don’t knock it until you try it.
Its not perfect lol the thing is plauged with engine failure unless you fix it yourself bruh its what made me choose something better which is a 350z i mean i guess if a brz/Gr86 had a nissan VQ motor the De Rev-up not the HR it would be a monster the 350z is more of a gem sports car you dont even need to turbo a VQ to have fun as well
@@theanimeotaku2794 Nissan is currently in life support as we speak. The VQ is nice but far from perfect. It funny you mention Nissans VQ when they have a reputation of being a street takover car in the form of a infinity. Why would anyone go get a ran down z when they can get a far superior handling car with low miles? If you want a good example of a 370 you looking at a little over 20k. The new Z isn’t even selling because it’s on a 370z platform lol.😂
the softop is def best part of the vehicle.
mazda should do built this car with a super charger or turbo from the factor. this car stock needs about 10 to 16k of upgrade to really be fun.
Na, I disagree lol the car power is perfect. If they add any more power they will price themselves out of the market and no one wants a 42k Miata. The fun factor is there the track ability is there just get some tires and brakes. The gearbox is one of the best in the business. You get all that for under 30k used. That’s one of the best values in the market for a sports car.
had 2018 club with full bolt ons. blew the engine around 89k. transmission around 102k. sign from god to dump the vehicle. super fun. i'm getting a 2024 tesla model 3 performance and gonna put it in chill mode and auto pilot. spent way too much money and time on miata.
infotainment system is weak in nd1 and nd2. even the 2024 honda crv hybrid infotainment system is weak. better than mazda for sure.
My only hate for this car is the pos of boxer engine they put it in. Traded my gr86 for a nd2 miata
You got an awesome car no rebuttal there lol.
@iManual6peed thanks bro, the gr86 is also great. On my local touge stock for stock the gr86 is faster, the nd2 stock has horrible body roll that needs to be addressed. I hope the car treats you well 🙏
I felt cramped AF in the Miata, else I'd have bought it. The GR86/BRZ has the legroom. And it's a blast. Both are great cars tho NGL.
@jpf2159 im 5'10 and fit like a glove, I don't even have the seat as far back as it can go. I've owned a c6 for a few years so small interiors don't bother me. I have to admit getting in and out of the miata is a bit annoying though lol sometimes I hit my foot on the door sill. But I agree the gr86 wins in space 100%
@@geoff0707 Man good for you. I have a Mazda3 and the quality of its interior (and also that of the MIata) is hands down better than the GR86/BRZ. I so wish I didn't feel so cramped. Then again having that extra space in the Toyobaru for luggage and whatnot for trips is super nice.
Great review. Thank you for sharing. I’ve considered buying a used Reserve L. What are your thoughts of buying this vehicle used?
@@bmcdonald7303 check the maintenance records and try going for a certified pre owned. As long as those are good I believe there is no issue with these cars.
@ thank you!
The Honda S2000 was not fast, it was just fun. But the GR86 is no S2000.
@@GameArmorGameplay S2k not fast?? I beg to differ lol you guys have to visit the track and see what a fast car really is. Most of the time its cars like 86, Miata, and S2k who out performs everyone else.
@@iManual6peed I guess 0-60 at 5.8 seconds isn't bad for an S2K. But what Toyota really needs is a fully built car in house. No more shared platforms. An AWD/RWD Celica would be welcomed.
@ keep an eye one them it is coming.
Love the content man and hope to see more! I did notice while watching the video that your camera seems to be like freaking out?? Lots of weird like tearing and aberrations. Is it a new camera?
@@Tsoda6625 well i have had it for a few months and im still learning how to use it properly. I’ll keep tweaking the settings also it may be during the editing phase where the output frames aren’t linking properly. But thanks I’ll be looking out for the issues.
Would you consider wheel spacers for the 86? I read 20ml at the front and 25ml at the back improves handing?
@@RabJ208 honestly I wouldn’t recommend wheel spacers if your not tracking the car heavy. I think some good tires and strut brace would be just fine for most drivers.
I’ve definitely realized this since putting on my exhaust like with axle backs you get the volume but it lacks in depth because of how little it effects the rest of the exhaust flow
Yea I thought it would t bother me this much. But I may do some research and find an alternative in the spring.
Love to see the switch up with the content man, always rooting for you and the success of your track discipline mixed with filming the whole process along the way 🫂
The engines are terrible, Subaru is known to cheap out on their engines, and they are prone to fail. If the engines were made more relliable, they would be the best car ever for the price. All you really need is a manual car that feels sporty, and lasts. There are many cases of engine failure due to oil starvation, and leaks being caused by the manufacturer using RTV instead of gaskets to save costs. When that glue goes through hot and cold cycles, it cracks. I don't hate these cars, if they were built well, I would want to pick one up. I like the way it looks and would want one, if only it had a better engine.
The ways to get over the issues with the FA20/FA24 are already well documented. You wouldn't treat this car much different from an STI. Increase oil change intervals, add an air oil separator and oil cooler if necessary. Check oil levels frequently. Etc. The engine isn't unreliable, it's just high maintenance and is susceptible to failure if on the track without the proper prep.
This engine is one of the best engines out there. According to the stats Subaru is the most reliable car manufacturer as of today. I have had 0 issues after multiple track days and oil changes. I agree the failures that have happened are not a good look for this car, but those a few in numbers and only are happening on tracks. If you don’t plan on tracking this car it makes for a perfect daily for the price. I’m 43k miles in and over 10 track days and as long as you understand how to mitigate the shortcomings of the engine I believe you will be fine. Also there is an oil pan being made right now to fix the starvation issue. Refer to Varus engineering for this information.
@@nvirevolution2235 I appreciate the insight, you seem very knowledgable on this. Every engine has it's weaknesses. It's just not for me. I do have a friend that wanted one, I'll let him know.
@@iManual6peed Sorry for the late reply, also thanks for the information! I have a friend who really wanted one of these. I'll send the information his way.
Word!🤙🏾😎
I just don’t care for the way Toyota is taking care of it customers these days.
@@POVShotgun I somewhat agree I have heard some horror stories from some, but in my experience I have been ok. Disclaimer I also perform most of my maintenance and solve my issues on my own if I have any, I have only dealt with them a couple of times.
I'm 64 sorry, I bring the average owner age way up... Count out 6 seconds, you're going 60 mph, higher than 90% of street speed limits... how many are even going to track this car? I owned a 3.5 second motorcycle, I experienced that quickness maybe a dozen times in 100,000 miles, it's so brutally fast most people wouldn't tolerate it... HP gives you top speed, Torque gives you quickness... the 86 is just so perfectly balanced, power and weight. No car will ever satisfied 100% of the population, there will always be haters...
@@joekagerer sir I agree, that’s one thing I continuously say in my videos is that most people who complain about hp never even use the one that they have in their Corolla that they will trade in to get this car.
I’m currently saving up for this car, I just need to learn how to drive manual before I get it 😅
Check out my playlist i have tutorials on how to drive manual.
Don’t sweat the learning too much. In 2 weeks you’ll be average & 1 month in it’ll be 2nd nature. I had zero experience when a bought a Fierro GT with f’n slanted H pattern. I stalled at least 10 x’s trying to get home. 1 month later I was fine. It is worth it for manual. The extra interactions and control of rev range make experience 10x’s better. I traded an Alfa Romeo for that 3rd pedal. You’ll love these cars.
AWD would’ve convinced me sadly it snows HARD ! In Michigan. Yes I’m on Bridgestone blizzacks
@@wrx_wes lmao the best rubber on the market for that weather. I could understand you caution on this vehicle in that weather but with tires being as good as they are now I think you would have been ok.
I drove a ‘78 Camaro Z28 through several blizzards. May not have stayed straight but did stay in my lane. Ground clearance is real issue.
i am a new owner of.2024 gr86 permium trim with brembos amd sachs. I don't like it because 1. RTV issue ( non issue yes but still.keeps.playing on my mind) 2. Road noise is crap. 3. Very uncomfortable ride 4. Interior is from 2014. 5. I miss the space of a regular car The good things 1. it IS fast. 230 hp is quite enough given the weight of thr car 2. Looks great gets the attention 3. Handling is amazing i got it for 28k USD brand new employee discount as i work for the dealer in my country. So good price but i am planning to sell it off within a year. Pretty sure i will be able to recovee my money since it will be mantained by the dealer and has 100k km warranty and is the top trim. I also think the car isnt for me because ill never take it to track not really a track person.
Well if a my rebutt the interior reasoning. The Cayman 718 has the exact same layout which is why Toyota & Subaru went with it I think. It’s simple yet effective. Having a IPAD on the dash wouldn’t have made it better. Road noise sure but what other car at this price point is significantly better? And you last point is fine, there are people who just can’t get use to a coupe but it’s nothing short of practical for one person I think it has just as much space as some compact sedans if you let the seats down. Overall I’m glad you got to try out the car, most people hate on it and never even drove it.
why are you getting rid of it if i may ask
Not sure what's the hate on the interior. I actually loved my gr86 interior, and the ride felt great to me. Only hate this car deserves is the engine issues and warranty problems.
Honestly 99% of the comments I've seen about this car have been positive. The issue is the negative comments just stick out more.
facts... i try to keep it under 80% because I'm a reasonable person who doesn't go to the track but in 6 months of ownership I'm in love this is the best value in the car market atm. People are sleeping on it. If they sleep too hard it may get discontinued due to lack of sales. Go buy one rich kids it's slow enough your parents wont bat an eye and literally the most fun you can have in a car that realistically can be a daily.
Agreed this car has so much potential.
the problem is that they market it as a sports car, give it a million problems, then sell a 2025 special addition for 40K. 2024 ECOBOOST MUSTANG is significantly more reliable, faster, interior that was made in this century, more room, can get it for 30K just like 86 with none of that. then "the people their marketing it to" try to get it boosted... uhh? why not just buy a better car if you had to money to boost a worse car? 35-40K + 10K boost or a 50K base supra?? GT mustang?? "its got nice handling" "its not made for speed" ?? crazy takes. its literally a car they sell to people like its their affordable option for a fun/daily, when its probably just gunna end up being a money sink that they don't honor the warranty for.
First, a turbocharger for this platform is 5k. So that would take you to about 37k if you bought a Base model new for around 32k or so. The Mustang eco boost is not something that is cross shopped with the GR86 because car enthusiasts would go for the real Mustang which is a GT or above. The problem with the ford is that it is significantly heavier than the 86 and doesn’t have the handling characteristics of the 86 at all. I would never advise to go for a dealer markup on any car whatsoever. Faster doesn’t mean better otherwise everyone would have Cameros and Mustangs and Miatas and 86s wouldn’t exist. The car only has one main flaw which has been documented and addressed.
@@iManual6peed its 5K + an install . most the people buying these aren't the people manually installing turbo/oil cooler themselves. ecoboost is the worse of the class above ft gt/supra/etc but since you can get eco @ 30-32K its gotta be compared to gr86 and the like, which it significantly outperforms. handling feels like a cop out when its losing so bad everywhere else. they say car enthusiast i say overhyped. base to base its no match. premium to premium its even worse. mods to mods its just "why spend all that when you coulda just got a gt/supra even a corolla if we're going to the 40-45K range"
@ i disagree, the eco boost mustang is not even close to what a GR86 offers in terms of a driving experience lol. There is a reason they are never compared to each other in videos. No one cares about a v6 mustang as much as you think. No to mention the power to weight ratio. If you look all across TH-cam right now you will see among the best driving cars the GR86 is always near the top.
It's a sports car. Just because it doesn't have 300+HP doesn't change that. If you only care about straightline speed (which is the only real point you brought up) then there are many better options then the 86/BRZ. This car is the only option for a car with the following config: FR, NA, manual, lightweight, coupe. The only other option with those requirements is the Miata, which I am much too tall for and also has no storage space to speak of. Yes the mustang is faster but you sacrifice weight, cornering, and an NA engine by chasing that. Going boosted defeats the point of this car. Which is to provide cornering performance and reward high skilled use of the basics (throttle, brake, and steering control).
@@nvirevolution2235 interior from 2009 , no reliability out of that engine at all , slower (significantly) and less room than almost all competitors in its class 35K. Like i said the only point people bring up is handling and if they just came out and said "this car is worse in every way but hey you might like turning in it" no one would buy it. the hype for this car basically just scams a bunch of random people into getting a really bad car. i almost bought one and after a test drive i realized how absolutely insane i was being thinking that car was worth it over anything else i could get.
The people who say this car needs more power are the demographic we don't want to be driving this car anyway. Let them hate. They either don't know how to actually drive a car fast, take their car to takeovers, or they don't even have their license yet LOL. The real car enthusiast knows.
I agree with that whole heartedly.
Man comeon 20mpg for that kinda speed does really feel underpowered. It screams so much for what it drives.
@@faikerdogan2802 on my worst day I get like 25mpg, and also keep in mind that just because you may drive it one way that may seem slow doesn’t mean others can’t be way faster in it. This car shows you the driver you are and where your weaknesses are.
Naw. I love mine to death but after driving it for over a year modified, the lack of power gets old quicks. Granted I’m stationed in NM so higher elevation to what I’m used to and the lack of curvy roads here just makes the car feel like it’s begging for a turbo which is what I’m probably gonna do just to get around 300hp. But in the backroads yea this car is perfect just not might be perfect for everyone depending on where they live.
Real car enthusiast here it's underpowered ngl
Your channel is like a breath of fresh air and common sense that the car community needs. The horsepower nonsense has gotten insane! Rally inspired cars like this aren’t meant for crazy horsepower. I’ve even seen people describe the 400hp of the new Z as just “meh”. Most people couldn’t even push a Miata or Civic Si to the limit, not even close. Moreover, there’s the price, if someone can’t afford a 30k car, they sure as hell can’t afford to mod it or track it. That 30k car will quickly become a 40k car with track expenses. I used to have a 2018 WRX that I had to sell during covid because of financial strain i had at the time and wanted something to replace it. Test drove a GR Corolla and a VB WRX, the VB is more easily tunable, but I found the GR to be more raw and fun out of the box, I have no desire to push horsepower. The GR is expensive, but the good news is it seems to be depreciating fast, I’m hoping to pick one up used next spring.
I always tell people if they wanted an STI go get a GR Corolla lol I drove the GR Corolla and I agree it’s definitely a hell of an experience. I would like for you to let me know once your able to pick that up. I would like to know your experience with it!!!
I test drove it, loved it. It doesn’t need anymore power, it has the right amount where it’s fast enough but not so fast where you can’t wring it out and have fun. The only changes I would ask for is a better interior design and materials, better sound system, a nicer sound to the engine and maybe slightly better fuel economy.. 28 mpg combined would be nice given the light weight and 2.4 L engine. But that that’s just nitpicking, it’s near perfect.
So idk how much of it was driving style. But I found that with the ts or gr stabilizer panel, installed to flush [ you aren’t supposed to as it will scrub your trunk] I got 32-34 mpg. Now that I have it sitting where it’s supposed to bc.. it scrubbed my trunk… I’m getting around 28-29 again. So definitely some improvement can be made in the mpg department with a little aero experimenting.
Nothing wrong with nitpicking for what you want, but with what it offers out the box to me is amazing!!! especially if you can grab this for under 30k slightly used.
@@walterhankin46 34mpg??? wow man thats great my best is 29 lol
I’ve seen BRZs with 35k miles for $24k. 86s are about $2k, not sure why probably just the styling.
@MonkeyPower55 could be the dealer they both should be around 25 to 28 used I think.
I own a 2022 GR86 No a track car the one I own check oil level before and after driving it Just over 6000 miles in two years Fantastic car !!!!
Glad to hear the great experiences
5.4 seconds 0-60 as tested...not slow. It's a corner carver. It's not a drag warrior. Learn to drive it on track. It won't cost 28k if it were forced induction or have the luxuries you'd want. That's not the point of the car. It's a great value for what you get.
Exactly!
I really want/need a gr86, im thinking of doing a gap year for work, completely focusing on getting the gr86, put a big downpayment, so keep the monthly at a decent price
