- Dear friends, I hope you spent a nice weekend ! I’m really happy to release this new video which is the final piece of my online performance at the Woodwindfest today 😊
I was thinking of arranging this Paganini Caprice n24 for a long time but I didn’t want to play it solo. Then I discovered thanks to my friend David Petrlik, violinist a wonderful accompaniment by Karol Szymanowski. I mixed it with the accompaniment by Schumann and few things of my composition and here it is ! You can see in a very nice Buffet Contrabass of 1935, thank you very much Buffet-Crampon for lending this amazing instrument directly from the Paris Buffet museum 🙏✨The score will follow in a few weeks if you’re interested.

I listen often to Nicolas (other videos). Still got to love the internet, that can bring us things like this, that 20 years ago would be impossible to have a Professional (capital P) like this playing in our living room as if it was a great concert hall (probably only there could we find something like this). About this performance and this man, what can I say? Just that you have a monster stupidly out of this world talent, and thank the lucky stars that you found the clarinet, so that we can all have the delight of seeing this. Cheers!

How wonderful! Bravo, Nicolas! Also, it is really great and Buffet Crampon and you are taking the museum out of that spooky "dead instruments" zone and quite literally breathe life of a vibrant cultural initiative into them again.

Yes, that really is surprisingly amazing how well it performs, and also telling of how well it was stored (if not maintained at all), temperature and humidity-wise. I am sure, with a fresh overhaul this contra would really shine, - while you get quite a lot out of it, but it would be mainly the player who would see the difference as it usually goes. Warmest wishes of health and continued creativity to you, too!

I've always been wanting to be able to listen to a really good recording of this song on clarinet and this is perfect! There's a piece that I want to hear someone play on clarinet and if anyone can do it it's you. The piece is Chopin Etude Op.10 No.4. I'd really love to hear this piece on clarinet.

twoset needs to react to this like ASAP
Love the use of special Contrabass you borrowed! It has many colors, playing lighter than most, when you wanted, and still get that edge when you need it. Another amazing composition/arrangement/performance!
Thank you again Bob ! This contra doesn’t have a huge sound but it’s really focus and really in tune ! (Especially with the Leblanc mouthpiece I got with, less convincing with a modern Vandoren), it’s only going to the low e flat but I would love to find one I could buy 😊

Congratulations Nicolas, for another great performance, and for a very very nice arrangement of this caprice. Don't like all the variations, but some of them are simply beautiful. I don't know if fellow musicians or other viewers have any idea as to how difficult is to pull out this one man ensemble, in a fast pace, highly rhythmic piece (theme + variations).
