I went in for a job interview a while back and after telling the recruiter I majored in Communications his response was, " Great how would you feel about holding the companies' sign outside to bring in new customers? That would be a great way to get marketing experience." I was devastated and felt disrespected. I had so many more skills to offer as a comm major and I felt he just did not understand that. What would have done differently in my situation? They ended up calling me back after the interview process but I declined.

This was such a comprehensive and helpful video. Thank you! But, your comment about internal comms was hilarious. Majority of the times it maybr boring as you labeled it. But, where I work (a beer company) we come up with all sorts if creative and engaging content and activities to motivate and inspire employees. And, it's not just communicating policies, missions and values. But influencing how the organization is perceived by employees, and in my case it stretches to making employees ambassadors of our products externally. So, it really depends on the company.
The reason why I was compelled to defend the field is because your description of corporate communication could discourage a comms graduate from assuming such jobs.

I'm graduating with a communication degree in May and I have did ZERO internships, so I'm nervous about not finding any jobs that want me.

@@assassin7250 Not one with my degree unfortunately :(, currently working a job that only requires a high school diploma BUT i'm hoping by August I'll start applying and getting interviews for a job that I got my degree in.

Do I offer my services for free at first to build a portfolio?

Also, would I need to take photos of the businesses products for them? What if the business takes bad pictures and it makes your work look bad?

yes you can, but also be very cautious not to let yourself be taken advantage of. I would only take jobs that will expand your skill not the same types of jobs over and over again. best of luck!
