LTC is another area; I went from a receptionist in an urgent care setting, health information tech (medical records), an assistant business office manager, then business office manager. A Business office manager basically manages all accounts receivable functions of a nursing home including preparing write-offs for year end. This experience really leveled me up and for anyone trying to get a head start I would definitely recommend long term care. Also, nursing homes need licensed administrators. Those are 6 figure jobs and you are responsible for managing the nursing home. This is also great experience that is transferable. It requires a bachelors in any field, so many hours of an administrator in training, and to pass the test. Long term care really needs more leaders to care for our geriatric population..

They don’t take leaders. They take stooges to squeeze every possible dollar out of each patient even when it is clinically inappropriate. Your job is find more ways to make money for the organization without it getting sued. That is your real job.

@@MrBrewman95 yes. Many healthcare organizations are for profit. I don’t think they lead anyone to believe otherwise. Healthcare is absolutely a business first..it’s not free. We don’t have universal healthcare and it’s not a right to everybody, although it should be. What is your point?

This is all very helpful. I have one more year left of getting my BA in Healthcare Administration. I was fortunate enough to work at a hospital doing patient transport for 7 years, also working at a PCA company. After getting laid off, I got a job working as therapy support in a Children's hospital and recently just went on call there, after getting hired as an Information Coordinatior at another hospital working the front desk in Radiology. It is hard to get a foot in the door but once you are in you can move around so much.

I've worked for an IPA medical group for 6 years, assisting nurses & social workers with the clerical side of patient care coordination & enter auths for providers.
My only medical exp was my 2 month M.A externship (which I didn't include in my resume) & office asst exp. Basically, I got in with only office exp, no degree & I love my job so much, I'm now getting my AS in Healthcare Admin.
Sometimes, you would REALLY have to know ppl to get in those places & lucky enough for me, I did know someone. From there on, I've gotten a few of my friends in with no medical exp & they've moved up to do medical claims, etc.
I know ppl who have master's in their respective fields but work in a restaurant. What I've learned was no matter what degree u have, with no exp or connections, it'll be hard to find a job. Lucky for me, I had both.

I did a bootcamp and got a couple of entry level IT certifications and was able to get a job in the IT field. Now I’m planning to supplement what I’m learning in the field into the emerging market of Health Informatics. I’m starting my master’s in Health Informatics with a concentration in data management next year, I believe that this is one of the best fields one can get into right now. First there is a short supply of qualified individuals to enter the field, and there is a healthy supply of jobs, higher than average.

Hi Courtney! Thank you for making this video! I’m currently looking to change careers from television journalism to healthcare administration ( yes I know, very different from one another :) ) however , I do believe there are many transferable skills ie. communication, liaising with organizations/others, time management and etc. I have a masters degree so another degree from a university is not within my financial budget right now. Instead, I was hoping to enter the field by completing a program and becoming a certified medical assistant at a small private practice and working my way up to a healthcare manager or healthcare administrative position (perhaps obtaining another certification in healthcare administration.) In your professional opinion, is this an advisable entry level job to achieve my career path goals?

I am so happy I ran across your videos!! I am set to graduate fall of 2022 with my bachelor's in health service administration. I am actually kind of nervous about graduating, with no actual experience in administration. I am also late at the game as I raised my kids first prior to attending school for my career, so a lot of my concern is towards competing with the younger crowd.. I did run my own business for 9 years but it was in an auto repair shop before I went to school for nursing and did that for 3 years. What suggestions would you have for getting my foot in the door? I was hoping to get into insurance or long-term care..

I still love this video. I've been on a couple of interviews but the challenges I've come across is that I do not have any experience in handling patient files and EMR. Also, with living in Miami, a lot of these medical offices are looking for spanish speakers only. Spanish required is popping up all over job requisitions now. I've noticed that if you don't have spanish language written onto your resume, it is overlooked. If you do get an interview they ask if you speak any other languages. I feel when I say no, I am being looked down upon. Due to Covid, there has been no volunteer opportunities available. I am feeling defeated.

With certificate in hand I knocked on my first door. The doctor was alone in his office, so I introduced myself and told him how and why he would benefit from trying me out. He hired me that day. Gave me 20 little cassette tapes, about 500 pages. I worked on them and returned the finished transcripts at the end of the week, on time right on the morning hour he wanted them. No mistakes.
