Best classes in the Comms field that I took were "public speaking" and speech writing. It is such a general field, but I believe many universities have specializations within the 'Communications' field (PR, Advertising, Journalism, Political Comms, Digital Media, etc). Specialize and then augment your studies with internships, co-op, work, etc that is in your field of specialization. Also seek outside university, industry-recognized certifications.

As a communication major from U.S. my degree is truely the "jack of all trades" degree and I love it for that reason. I personally didn't have any intense readings (which is good because I hated reading and math) instead I learned public speaking, interpersonal skills, interviewing, film , and journalism. I love it a lot because I did learn sooo many different skills.

Hi Cheyenne. I'm a Cameroonian (Equatorial Africa) and studied Journalism and Media Studies while holding a part time job as a communications officer. I do believe that a communications degree encompasses presentation skills. Though it's not entirely about that. So your university friend was partly right about that because the expectation is that as a comms graduate you should be able to do well in multiple careers be it in movies, music, journalism, and advertising etc. These jobs require you to be a good communicator to some extent

This video really is helpful. I'm a high school student who as of now is very much confused on what I want to study for college, causing me to stay up researching constantly. At first I thought I'd go into marketing but when I looked into that, I found out that isn't the thing I exactly was going for nor something in my strengths. Then I came across a video with someone who had a communications degree. I became quite curious and began to delve into what it was.
When I say many, and I mean MANY videos would have determined the degree useless and it was making me more and more hesitant. But I was still curious because even then, those videos didn't clarify one thing that you did just now. Which was, since the degree seems to be a versatile one- it can be paired with anything. This clarification made me quite happy. Now knowing I can pair this degree with something of my interests, still be able to gain a livable income, and it involves skills that i'm quite confident in. It just seems right to me.
So thank you for making this video and answering a few of my many questions regarding the degree and major.

Hey! I'm so happy I was able to help. A comms degree is really a jack of all trade master of none situation so once I was able to approach it from a very narrow field such as television studies it become much easier to see how the degree was useful. Good luck in which university you choose!

As a senior in communications major at the University of Maryland, I find a lot of what you say to be pretty helpful and accurate. I will note that my course load seems to vary a lot from yours (to start I have no idea who those theorists are).
I'd say the best advice was to write essays about topics/industries you want to build a career in. Communications degrees give a lot of leeway when you're writing essays or giving presentations. Communications work is needed in almost every industry, so be sure to capitalize on the opportunity to close the gap between your interests and your future career!
Good luck to everyone this upcoming semester.

In case someone asks me again about my degree i'll just send a link to this video bc everything u said is honestly on point.
Probably the communication theory that took me a while to really understand is McLuhan's "the medium is the message" or the media ecology theory. I reported about this 1st yr 1st semester and idk how I did it.
Also another course that we had which I think is really important is Risk, Disaster, and Humanitarian Communication. We had this just right before the pandemic started and thankfully I kept all the notes and materials for the subject bc reading again the different theories and models on how to craft messages when we are in a crisis has made me appreciate more my degree. I am a journalism major, I had my internship last year at a local newspaper and all of the stories I wrote were about or related to Covid-19. And I owe the success of my internship to my RDH notes 😄

I’m so glad I found this video! I am a 3rd year CC student and will be transferring to uni after next sem. I plan to major in health communication and minor in both sociology and writing. I was watching another vid a bit ago that said that a communications degree would get me nowhere and that really upset me. I just want to work in the healthcare field but not on the practicing side of it. Also, I’m a shy person, but I have a way with words, but my mom believes I have to be extroverted to major in communications. I know for a fact that’s not necessarily the case. I’d love to see a vid talking about the various job opportunities for both introverts and extroverts, or something along those lines!

After seeing your video, you inspired me, girl. Very informative video, I then the next day contacted my student advisor, asked lots of questions that you explained in your video, and decided I needed to officially request a "switch of major" with my college to bachelor's of science in communications, and I got accepted! hi tira glad you got something from my video! i actually have a bachelors of arts in communication and a marketing certificate from the same university and ive found that in job interviews it gives more context to my degree since comm can be so broad. so i would go for it!

Great video! I wonder if there is a difference between disciplines such as communication or social psychology or sociology.

They are intertwined in one way or another. But I think communication is a a common part in all phycology little wonder, the subject communications skills is taught in every course...

Psychology often focuses on how concepts ( biases, stereotypes etc) effect the individual. This can go over how the effects they have on an individuals brain and/or how they react to there social environment. Sociology is how do these concepts affect society and people's social standings, the community, economic well-being, etc. Communications blends the two together but they would not go into as much depth as psychology and sociology

I am currently working on my communications studies AA degree, after 7 years of working at an unfulfilling yet very stable job at a big well known company.
I was afraid to commit to a communications studies degree straight out of high school precisely because when I would be asked "what are you going to school/college for?" and I would respond communications studies, I would get the same response that you mentioned "it's useless", "not worth it", "be smart about your career choices", "what is that?".
Very well put video, and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hey I really need some help I’m thinking about studying communication and media and I am really interested in it yet I’m not really sure about it because I’m more of a creative and becoming a creative director or art director of some sort would be my ideal career, I‘m just not sure if studying this will send me in a rather highly marketing and business based route and how I can manipulate my experience to make it into the more artistic side of the industries ( like film, art or any content production ) or if studying communication and media may not be a good idea in this case
I would love any help or responses, I‘m highkey desperate for advice !
    Thank you already :)

hey communications is a perfect degree for a career path towards being a creative director. working at an agency requires someone that can make connections between things that people dont normal see a connection between. comms will teach you that without all the sales price distribution stuff u get in marketing

What's the difference between Communication and Communications? I've been told there's a difference but I don't fully understand it. And how does Rhetoric compare to these two majors? I would love a major that was focused on the art of persuasion, which I know Rhetoric is. Sorry if I sound clueless lol

I heard that getting a film degree is useless and in mass communications you can write for TV and radio. Does majoring in mass communications help getting into writing in film production after graduation?

So I got two options from a college which both also are online study, English and mass communication major. I am having trouble choosing one of those. I am afraid that I choose the wrong path. What skills I will learn in mass comm?

So what is the difficulty on obtaining a good degree as well as a job in this field of studies?. i'm currently serving in the military, (Navy) and wish to start school ASAP. only thing is i've had a problem figuring out what i want to major in. i'm from Los Angeles and i feel this would be a good degree to have beneath my belt when i leave and settle down in LA. any feedback is highly appreciated! I started looking into majors and this just caught my attention. I’m beginning my research and came across this video which was exceptional. Like anything else, I’m sure there’s a lot of hard work and dedication needed to excel. Just would like to enhance my knowledge more on the topic. THANKS 🙏🏼!!
