Welcome to my corner of the internet! 😈
I make videos about how society is shaped by the technologies it creates. I'm mostly obsessed with how television, social media and now artificial intelligence are used to control the masses. These are technologies that have only existed within the constructs of capitalism and so are inherently dependent on extracting value from its audience, aka us. I think that's messed up. So I created this channel to share what I learn every month about the new ways that we're being exploited. 🙃
I did an undergrad in communication studies so I regularly reference communication theorists or cultural studies in my videos to unpack the economic incentives of these technologies. If you're new here, you should start with my Keep Comm and Carry On series.
I hope that by watching my channel you'll become literate in media and artificial intelligence and will want to advocate for creating technologies that are less shitty.

Noam Chomsky Manufacturing Consent: The 5 Filters Explained
Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman's book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a must read book for any Communication Studies student. It provides a model that predicts the type of stories that will be reported in the Western mass media. The model doesn't try to argue that the media produces stories that are convincing. It only argues that the stories that make the news serve the interests of the rich and powerful that own the news.
More importantly, this model is a tool that we can all use today to understand why we see certain stories and why other stories are excluded from the news media.

Stuart Hall's Encoding and Decoding Explained
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
this video wraps up my discussion of semiotics. Stuart Hall's work on encoding decoding really launches semiotics into cultural studies and that's where I want to take you next. Encoding and decoding attempts to connect the very linguistic practice of semiotics with the very tactile experience of discourse. Discourse is a theory by Michel Foucault that tries to understand how language effects h...

I appreciate the thoroughness of each point you made! It brought me clarity as my head was spinning in a cloud of oppositional confusion : D
You hit the nail on it!! Working in advertising within a news organization and peeped this, insidious!
I love your videos, they really get me thinking. My question isn't necessarily connected to the content of this video but more to communications as a whole...My major is International Communications with a focus in Asian studies. I'm struggling to find a direction that might help lead to a career...is a degree like mine possible to make work in today's world of communications on the international stage?
Thank you, awesome information, really helpful.
She is wonderful ❤❤If you never read a book by Chomsky this book will open your eyes !
I think it's useful to think of "think tanks" as lobby groups, because the former gives them an air of intellectualism, but the latter is actually how they function. Great video. Glad i found your channel.
Great point!
While watching your video a question popped up in my mind: How about combining combining media studies with a diploma in marketing? Could this be a career defining choice?
So much information is actually unverifiable. For that reason I believe it to be a healthy practice to assume the negative when given information as pessimistic as that sounds . In regards to wealth disparity which you spoke of towards the end of the video . I believe that is more of a feature of the monetary system itself . Where credit can be continuously expanded and those that qualify for that capital will benefit from it most . Affecting the cost of living in a negative manner . To your final point regarding voting 🗳️. I couldn’t disagree more . I think if democracy is something that you value the power of the jury and your individual vote in a trial is the only vote that means anything . It is your only actual say as a citizen regarding actual laws and how they are implemented. Jury nullification I believe is something we should all talk about regardless of political leanings.
3:00 Its after 2010 ,when china started to spend their previously highly exploitated workers (employed by the western multinational companies) on their public infrastructure and nationalising their indistries or having a government stkae in private companies, so now its anti china sentiment (its bipartisan), anti russia sentiments are mostly from liberals voters , democrat party officials, loyalists ,not from the republican side.
I think your content is of higher quality than your presentation is making it seem. Audio is more important than video. Not sure what you use for video production but you need to process your audio to address the room noise, the echo the of that room. It needs to sound less like you're talking across the room and more like you're here telling me something.
hey thanks for the feedback - any suggestions for mics?
@@itscheyennecassidy a good mic will help but it's more of an audio processing issue... you could use a shotgun mic pointed at you or what I do is use a DJI wireless with a lavaliere mic like you might do in an interview. Check out @podcastage for affordable mic options, he's reviewed just about everything but more importantly find out how to use your video processing software (davinci resolve/premier) which have free or paid plugins or just audio processing software. You're on youtube and there's a lot here on how to remove room noise or how to remove room echo with whatever software you choose.
Add an Israel/Zionism Filter. If it's critical of Israel or makes Israel looks bad
Edward Bernays propaganda is also critical to understanding Manufacturing Consent, It is brilliant that you made some points I wasn't exposed to before, especially using filters to limit information, I agree with you the news cycle is too extreme with newspapers you had the entire week to digest the news and wait for Sunday or Monday for a new news cycle
everything has sped up and there’s also more information leaving no time to process anything
Hi Cheyenne, really liked your video. Your voice seems to be heard only in left channel tho
thanks for pointing this out! I found the editing error causing this so going forward you’ll be hearing me surround sound!!! 😊
Thanks for this
This is a great breakdown, thank you! And good to note the communism being replaced with Russia. I’d add terrorism to that list, too. The manufacture of consent today is only going to lead us into more war. Eventually we might even have Americans begging for the draft 🙃
Noam Chomsky manufactures consent and so do you :)
Please be normal.
is this on the book "Representation: Cultural Representation and Signifying Practices"????
Awesome . Keep it up
Thanks 😊
I've been anticipating your discussion on this communication theory. Excellent insights as always. ^^
Awww thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for explaining so clearly! but I have a little question, is the skull an icon or an index? Because the picture looks like the real skull and I thinj just like the sign at the bathroom, when we see the sign of skull, we know it's very dangerous here🤔
Thank you
Lemme get your number mama
Wow! This is an excellent video. I knew everything in the first half of the video, but the second half was really enlightening. I didn't realise how closely everything was tied together with Trump's campaign and big tech and bitcoin.
Yup we’re doing great down south 🙃🙃
Literally the most helpful video I’ve watched on this topic thank you
The man is gross.
Cool video. Feedack: sound effects are too loud, s sounds very sharp. For that you can get a cheap pop cover for your mic or just put some fabric between you and the mic or keep some fabric around you out of the frame. Also you hear lots of background noise in your audio. You can get rid of a lot of it by using free audio software like audacity. You record a quiet recording of your mic picking up the ambient noise and use it in order to mute the background noise through all of your recordings. It´s super cheap ways to make your audio sound a lot better. I´ll just watch the video on my speakers as it is hard for me to listen to it on headphones.
Let's recap that first term th-cam.com/video/YxB6U64BBv8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DO34UJ9U1MNdfCFy
Great job explaining this 😊 very much appreciated
His brand will be done pretty much if he loses. He’ll just go back to hawking trash to his followers. He now has more buyers for his Trump Vodka etc. That is if he doesn’t go to jail.
Another biased person who doesn’t even understand the American political system. I had hopes for this video. I thought blck people weren’t a monolith but all these blck women regurgitate the same stupidity.
This is really well done and I hope it gets more views!
Thanks so much! I appreciate that 💕
Looking forward to your analysis on this one!! ❤
500 for a few x rays and a cleaning is 🤪
can you please do the connotative and denotative analysis for me and thank you for the semiotic lecture it really helped 😍😍
You explained this so well!!!
please what would be the best degree to pursue if you want to create content?
so can you be a content creator or an influencer of your own is you study comms?
please cheyenne i wanted to know if the uni gives you practical hard skills to create the media you were intrested in. Do they teach you how to film, edit videos for social media and stuffs like that? thank you so much ❤
Hey, thanks for the questions. Uni didn’t teach me practical skills. Most of classes I took on film assumed I knew how to edit videos from the jump. Everything you need to know practically to be a content creator you can learn on TH-cam for free!
This is great!
I love this video. I can relate to it a lot, from France. We can benefit from these tips in France as well, where there is a lot of racism.
I faced that at work I was terminated form work for no reason just been black
this was so insightful! can you advise what you think in terms of if a strategic communications major is enough or should I minor as well in something like business analytics?
Interesting question. I think when it comes to strategic comms you need to understand why you’re communicating in the first place. Your communication isn’t in a vaccum so you should use your minor to compliment whatever industry you want to go into.
Love it !
love it !
love it, such an important concept
Hello Cheyenne, I liked your video presentation. I was leered into watching your visit because I thought you were going to expose Stuart Hall as a whistle blower on how he shared how the media portrays people of color and how the m media oppresses people of color. Stuart Hall was from an upper class society from the islands. On his graduate application to Oxford, he did not declare himself as Black, and was admitted into the master of communication program. There, he learned that the senior and chef editors jobs are to manipulate what gets produced and how. Although bright, students from state universities do the grunt work on editing, it's those from Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford, and Eaton universities that are the senior editors that make the changes based on status. The writers or news reporters do the foundation work, then their work is edited to represent what was reported. Then the senior editors alter the original message to project a stigma to illustrate status difference. Stuart Hall blew the whistle on this construct and the media itself buried his story. BICS and CALP, the material the media wants people to know is in BICS format so that common people comprehend. To bury the information, CALP is used so that common (uneducated masses) give up after reading the first sentence. The secrets are written in advanced elevated language to detour common people from pursuing the hidden message. That's how secrets are able to be present in plain sight. Start Hall had to write in CALP in order to have his work published. Read between Halls lines. Again, great video.
