This is as good as a live band gets. Those guitar tones are fire! Rob Hirst belongs among the drummer's pantheon next to the likes of Bonham, Moon, Rogers.
In '85 they were the best band live in the world. I honestly think the big boys took notice and came out with great stuff in the late 80s as a response to MO
My late wife and I were here at this very gig and was a great evening , I agree with Wayne smith the band was the best live band to watch ,we had the luck of seeing them in every state that year as we toured around Australia when we were young well younger lol since then i lost kath but it was great times , to all you young guys and girls don't put it off till you retire do it now and enjoy life :)
I'm 55 now..for a live Australian band, there was none better than the OIl's..you can bring any other aussie act, INXS/Chisel/AC/DC.....Powderfinger, I've seen all these bands live.
Wow, this takes me back. When I was at university, the nun who ran my hall of residence was great mates (a bit of a foster mum), to one P Garrett who was living in another college down the road. When I turned up at my college perhaps a decade later, I was already a hardcore Oils fan. Thus, I was blown away at my orientation interview in the nun’s office. She had about 15 snaps of “Peter” framed on the wall. There were some with his blonde locks still in evidence. There was another one of him perhaps singing one of his first gigs (in the college’s common room). My own favorite was Garrett and the nun. He looked like a giant, because our kindly old nun was rather elderly and frail. Then again, she had an iron grip that she readily applied to our elbows to gain our attention.
That's a very secure frontman who's willing to share the mic with the drummer. Both are extremely talented, as are the entire band, so it stands to reason. This is, as usual, a powerful statement. There should be more contemporary artists making music like this.
I understand Peter was very busy with his first attempt at getting into Australian Parliament through the Nuclear Disarmament Party & several songs of this album feature Rob a fair bit as a result.
I love this particular concert and the Oils in general, couldn't give a shit about Pete's political career, this was a great moment in Australian music!
watched it live when it happened as a teen in 85 , so did most of my home town Port Macquarie , what a great gig , still my fave today , timeless memories in every song
Every now and then I play one of these songs from Oils on the water and it just makes me feel so good I end up watching every song and then some extras.
LOVE the OILS, always have always will, they rocked it, with a fabulous message Never forget my first concert at KOOYONG, many moons ago but loved it...........
I remember our local ABC classic FM had just come on air that month (105.7 from Brown Mt) & was able to enjoy the FM simulcast of this concert in stereo. One of the few rare occasions when ABC Classic was playing rock music :)
Regardless of the pond dwellers mumbling about Peter Garrett selling out, being a hypocrite blah blah, one thing remains, Midnight Oil is most likely the best outfit to play live anywhere.
midnight oil, the best band ever!!..glad i saw them live in oz in the mid 80s, and here in the in uk 1990, i had that triple J t-shirt from the goat island gig, and ive been playing the goat island cd full blast in my car, especially with an election today in the uk, this song is quite appropiate,
he has been in a massively succesfull rock band he is on countelss commitees for the environment and he has been a minister in the government what the fuck have you done
Am I the only one who realises Peter got screwed over in the house? They promised him, PROMISED him, that he'd make the difference he was talking/singing about in all of these songs, then sold him out to make him look like the sell out and put him on the bench so he can't do a fucking thing about it.
Chris Carville .........thanks Chris, I completely agree. I still get annoyed at this “Garrett sold out” crap, I’m sure the “knockers” were all busy doing their bit for the country? I always believed Peter sincerely meant well but was a small fish in a very large pond (of piranha). Politics aside, all members of the Oils contributed to writing and performing this amazing music and that’s what they should be remembered for, the message hasn’t changed!
since the early 80s he spoke out against nuclear, and was implicit about it again in 2006. in 2009 he unequivocably supported the Four Mile uranium mine. Just one example. I think it's called being a "hypocrite"? Once you enter mainstream politics and tow the party line all this "change" stuff comes to very little, and with Garrett it runs counter to everything he preached through the 80s. But...he's a public school boy from an affluent family so he knows which side his bread is buttered on.
I do not really care if people think Peter Garrett went back on things he said/preached! The importance of the messages he spread is what counts (then and now!) :D
Ha ha wonderful stuff, the look on Jim Moginie's face at 2:27 as he looks over at Martin Rotsey fucking up the riff. "What the hell are you doing Martin?" :)
A guy in my high school did this song for our Pop Concert in 1985. This was when Midnight Oil was only known by the cool kids for 10, 9, 8... and Red Sails In The Sunset, a few years before all the suburban white people caught on with "Beds Are Burning."
I've not heard about Pete since he made his departure from the band back in 2003, I know he's now in Australian Gov, but what's he doing, ( or not doing..) now that's making him such a hypocrite? If true it's saddens me, 'cause he was such a beacon of honesty and spokesperson for humaneness.
Used to love Peter, since he sold his soul to the ALP, it's become a shadow of the romance it was. Sell-out is I believe the most accurate description of a once great Australian
interesting, generals is a plural yet the song references only one person. another thing is the that for such a politically aware group the general is a "him". sup'ose you could have a female general or is that impossible. No reply sort or required
This is the only MO song I don't like. The music is downbeat, it's stop start and the vocals are drab and the lyrics are childish. It makes my skin crawl that this is track 2 yet they have so many absolute belters that follow. Whenever I listen to this concert all the way through I start at track 4.
Millions of years later, a dream cane true. In 2019, I finally saw them live in Hamburg/Germany. It was great. Just unbelievable.

I totally agree about Rob Horst he's amazing. I can't get enough of that drum solo in Power and the Passion
Strange... I didn't write this message 🤔

That is such a beautiful sentiment. Thanks mate.
I think that people will pay large sums of money to time travel to this event someday. I'm jealous that you were there! Swoon! :)
I'm 26 fuck, I wish I was an alive cunt then

I never realised Rob sung so much lead vocals on this. Awesome.
I understand Peter was very busy with his first attempt at getting into Australian Parliament through the Nuclear Disarmament Party & several songs of this album feature Rob a fair bit as a result.
Singing drummers are the best, and rare.
@@OzziePete1 This concert features songs from multiple albums, and Rob sings the songs that he wrote. Had nothing to do with Pete's political career.

twoducks Rob Hirst, is absolutely brilliant!!!!!
He's a good bloke,I had a beer with him
He looks lots like the supposed Dustin Hoffman.
a really hard working drummer.

Australia has produced some awesome legendary music.

What an amazing band! Bloody love them and Peter Garrett!
"as long as you can offend no one and satisfy the people that've got the most money.." How little things have changed in 35yrs
LOVE the OILS, always have always will, they rocked it, with a fabulous message
Never forget my first concert at KOOYONG, many moons ago but loved it...........
Such a complexly nuanced sound. Great band.
Still the best live band in this country!!Nothing beat being right up the front of an oils gig!!And living to tell the tale!!
Back when the oils rocked hard!
Great live, great band
This concert was magic!
August 4, 1985, I saw them here in Santa Fe NM at the now defunct for concerts , Paolo Soleri Amphitheater . One of the GREATEST shows of my life.
Mark Ortiz
At that time (1985) there weren't many, if any, better live bands in the world than Midnight Oil.
You guys rock!
I remember our local ABC classic FM had just come on air that month (105.7 from Brown Mt) & was able to enjoy the FM simulcast of this concert in stereo. One of the few rare occasions when ABC Classic was playing rock music :)
One of the world's great live bands!!!
Nice song and well sung my brothers fav band yet to see live
Just heard this song yesterday, what a ripper
Regardless of the pond dwellers mumbling about Peter Garrett selling out, being a hypocrite blah blah, one thing remains, Midnight Oil is most likely the best outfit to play live anywhere.
1985... Amazing!!!
Love the moment at 2:25 when the band loses the beat momentarily and Peter shoots them a wtf look.
It's Martin Rotsey who derails for a moment, hence Jim and the two Peters all look in his direction 😄
My fav oils song and my fav brothers band
I still have the tape of this song!! ^^ Great band!
Changed my life
Loved them then , still love 'em
Love 💕 these guys ☝️ of the best

With so many crap "musicians" out there that can't play live, this performance is a refreshing change.

it is a lot easier to talk about change when you are in a band but hard to make it happen in politics
🔥🖤❤️💛🔥
Who was the young King playing next to the Rob Hurst? Playing some sort of other drum machine?? Sounded great!!
2:26 a rare F#@k up, funny reaction from the rest of the band....
