I want to translate a German song to Polish and I wanted to do bilingual subtitles in different colours. Is this possible in DaVinci Resolve or is it the same as in Windows Movie Maker - any font changes will apply to ALL of the subtitles? Do you recommend any other movie program for this? I would be very grateful for answer.
I am sure you will cover it but I came here because I can't seem to output mine with the settings I applied in my Inspector. They are also coming into Resolve with the wrong timecode: When I tell Resolve to insert the SRT into the timeline using timecode, it uses the wrong timecode. When I created it originally, the first subtitle starts at 01:00:29:02. But when I imported the subtitle, the starting TC in media pool says 01:00:25:11. Why is that? The new timeline I made has the same start timecode as my original sequence. The starting TC is also right in TextEdit. Also, Resolve still didn't bring in my original settings: the drop shadow, the position, alignment, text size and the font. It did change from white to yellow though.

Also, I like to do videos with subtitles that show one language with the translation below the original text. Is there a video showing how to do that? If so, can you provide the link? Thanks.
Thanks! If you want to scroll the text, you probably have to use a different kind of text, not the subtitle text. Seems like the subtitles are pretty basic. I don't have any videos on multiple lines of subtitles for different languages. In resolve with the Subtitle feature, you can only show 1 subtitle track on screen at a time. So I don't think it would work unless both languages were in one subtitle track on the same clip.
That bit about linking the subs to video is great. I do subtitles for every video I make at work. I find it much easier to do the transcription and basic layout in Word (usually on another laptop), export an RTF, open that in SubTitle Edit, export the .srt, and bring that into Resolve to place. I lock all the tracks except the subs because things can happen. I wish Resolve had a subtitle style drop down list since I usually have to adjust a few subs every video to go around our brand titles (which are full height and quite wide), and entering the style every time is annoying (doesn't take long, but subs are a pain). The Speed Editor works with subs and can be more efficient in many cases, and it's just more fun to spin the dial than click and drag.

Any ideas how to save preferences in subtitles? For example, each new video I have to revert back to yellow captions, drop shadow and centre justify. How can I tell DaVinci to save those as default subtitle settings please?
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you! Previously, once I set the subtitle preferences on a timeline, it would keep all of them no matter how many videos I did on each previous version of DV. Weirdly now I have to reset them with each video on the same timeline! Odd.
Thanks for another great video Jason! I'm wondering if there's a way to randomly and automatically change the styling of certain words in the subtitles like if I want words to be bolded every now & then?
You can change the style of the text for individual subtitle clip so that it’s different from all of the rest of your clips, but I don’t believe you can change individual words within that clip. I’m not sure though I have not tried.
Is there a way to use the text (from the normal video channel) and turn it into subtitles? I didn't find a way to do it, I'd need to use material from an old and extensive project so I don't have to retype everything
I don’t think there’s a quick way to do it other than copy paste. You could upload it to TH-cam, let TH-cam generate the text, download the file and then just use that.
Thanks! It’s just a white backdrop with 2 RGB LED lights in the side and one set of LED strip lights along the top. You can make it any color you want. 😁👍
amazing tut. btw, does anyone know where the "customise caption" tick box is? is it a pro feature ? cos i only have the default "use track style" tick box. i want to be able to keyframe coloring/ highlighting my subtitle . thank in advance.
could you pleeeease help me? i have a problem when exporting a file with subs and then adding it to the video in youtube, the timing is wrong! that's the time in the file 1) 01:00:03,599 and here it is how youtube sees it: 03:35.. and 2) 01:00:06,603 -> 6:35 3) 01:00:09,022 -> 9:00. what should I do?
Is it a formatting issue maybe? I’d double check TH-cam help to see exactly what TH-cam needs for a subtitle file. Then double check that with what you are getting from resolve. Something must be off somewhere I think.
Will Blackmagic ever fix the shortcut to add Subtitles on Resolve? I've seen some bug reports but no answer from them. Would be much easier if they just fix it.. If you dont know what i'm talking about, the keyboard shortcut option to create new subtitle in timeline doesnt work
I don't know why it doesn't work. They should fix that for sure. I found it just as easy to right click in the subtitle track and add it that way or just hit 'Add new' in the inspector. Hopefully they fix that soon! Thanks for checking out the video! 😁👍
hi im totally new at this and i started uding for adding sound to my animations, but my effects doesnt work. i put in reverb and doesnt reverbs (xD). Can u please tell me what could be the problem?
What kind of audio are you trying to put the reverbon? Have you adjusted the settings and the reverb window? Are you applying on a track level or on a clip level?
I imagine you would make it all the same. I don’t really use subtitles in my videos, but if you were making some sort of film, I assume they would be the same. I’m sure there is some standard for editing subtitles, I just don’t know what that is.
I know I'm late to the party here but - I'd like to take already existing captions from an srt file that I've added to a timeline and convert them into basic text elements - so that I can animate them (we do sermon clips and try to do things like have certain words change size or font). Any tips on how to pull this off?
@@JasonYadlovski we poked around with it just now and you can make basic edits like changing fonts and colors by cutting a caption with the razor and then unchecking the 'use track style' button on the pieces. It then resets the style to default (which is lame) but you can then change colors and sizes of individual words. I think if we need anything more than that we would have to just copy and paste the caption text into a regular text/title object. Our silly workflow is going to be use premiere to create accurate captions automatically then import them into resolve for edit and remote collaboration work.
I'm not sure if you can save a presets for it, but you only have to change the settings once for all of the subtites, and everything will update accordingly
You can to some degree alter the text background thankfully if it's feeling a bit too close to the text. If you enable the Overide Sizing option in the Background category on the active subtitle, you get some parameters that help fix the closeness fairly easily.
@@JasonYadlovski you can also simply just add spaces before and after your text. :) Anyways, love the videos man! Keep up the great work, you have helped me out s@!t loads in making mine better! Cheers. Vlad.
Great as usual but I would’ve loved to see how the plain text is when imported to Resolve and how to assign the timing, looooved the idea of your phone writing them for ya, I do talk a lot too and all my videos have both english cc and spanish subtitles, it would save me time cause youyube is a bit slow an many times misunderstand my non native accent lol
Thanks! Towards the end of the video I showed how to import a text file, you can download the free file that I linked to in the description and see what it looks like if that helps. Thanks for checking out the video! 😁👍
I don't think there is any way around some of the manual work. You could upload the video to TH-cam, let TH-cam make the subtitles, then download the file and work with that. Takes a lot of work out of it for you.
thanks for the video, but i have one problem and dont know if you can help me, when i add subtitles boxes the video just becomes laggy, every clip that has a subtitle becomes laggy and its driving me crazy, dont know if anybody also had this kind of problem, hel plz ;C
Do you have to wait for a second for it to render? Is the render cache turned to smart? If yes, it should speed up after the first play through or when it renders.
If I may make one suggestion. When making any Titles (Lower Thirds / SubTitles) ETC. Keep them above U-Tubes Red Progress line, Especially if making a Tutorial video like Jason's Videos are. Does exporting the subtitles to a srt file keep the subtitles as styled? Or does it take the styling and coloring etc away and you'd have to do it all over again when importing it to a media?
Is it possible to turn an auto subtitle track into a compound clip? I am going for a vintage effect so I am trying to pixelate the subtitles with the "mosiac blur" effect. Thanks!
I uploaded the SRT file to Vimeo for a video and the subtitles aren't showing up. Anyone else had this issue and SRT files made on DaVinci not working on Vimeo?
I wonder if there is a way to import a timecoded transcript text file and subtitle automatically or shorten the process? Or maybe convert a timecoded transcript file into an srt file?
@@JasonYadlovski I did a little bit of searching and came across a web based txt to srt converter. Not perfect but beats typing in 39 pages of transcript!
Hi Jason! Thanks for the video! :) A quick question: I embed my subtitles into the video. When I open VLC to play my video, i can choose the subtitle track. So far so good. However it says "Track 1 - [English]", even though I gave my subtitles a different name and they are not in English... Any idea how I can edit the text that it displayed? Thank you!
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! I’m not sure how the title you mentioned is getting in there, maybe it’s something with the rendering process? I’m not really sure. I don’t have too much experience with subtitles like that. Maybe check and see if there’s some options when exporting subtitles in the deliver tab?
Aloha Jason, Question. I already have my video set and audio but i want to add the subtitle for my whole video. How can i make the whole subtitles go along with the whole video like a ticker-tape or coming up the video?
Hi! Are you wanting it to scroll up the screen? If that’s the case, you have to use a text for that. There is a scrolling text. The subtitles will only appear at the bottom of the screen. I don’t think you can animate the subtitles if you use the subtitle feature. You have to use regular text to do that.
Back to srt files. There are a lot of programs that handle those. Srt is very common. If you can sync them with the audio you're using, you can make one for each language you support. Useful.
Hey, not sure if this is a new feature since you made this video but Premiere Pro has a feature called transcript which will automatically make your subtitles. I recently had it automatically create captions for a feature film (no way would I do that manually). All I had to do was double check everything and make edits because it’s not perfect, but it was a brilliant starting point.
Hello, i was doing my subtitle, unfortunately after all the subtitle is done I realized there are some edit I need to do with the video track, however my subtitle won’t move with the video track as it was imported, is there a way I can fix that? Currently if I add a clip my subtitle will stay in the same place and not in sync like before

In the deliver page, there’s an option to have the subtitles burn into the video. You have to check it on, it’s on the left-hand side of the Deliver page towards the bottom. If you don’t want to burn them into the video, you can export a subtitle file that you can then upload to TH-cam or other service.
You should be able to just click on the subtitle clip and then hit delete to get rid of it. Or if that doesn’t work, just select the subtitle, open the inspector and delete the text out of it.
Hi! thanks for this video it was pretty clear. I just have a question. I have 2 guys talking in the video, so I want one subs to be white and the others to be on other colour, but if I add another subtitle channel (to make those changes of colour) the first one gets disabled, but if I change the colour on the same channel... all the subs gets the same colour... is there a way to achieve this?

Hey! I don’t know if you can set it to only be one line, you just need to put less text in your particular subtitle
Hi, thank you for this great video.
How to add fade in and out for subtitles?
They don’t have a fade for the subtitle text. If you use regular text it will work.
Very nice explanatory video!
Thanks!
This is such a well made tutorial with all the required details and sections. I was having trouble exporting my video with subtitles on and thanks to you I solved the problem quickly. Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Your videos are so helpful - don't know what I'd do without them! Thank you Jason!
You’re welcome, glad you find them helpful. Thanks so much for watching! 😁👍
Any ideas how to save preferences in subtitles? For example, each new video I have to revert back to yellow captions, drop shadow and centre justify. How can I tell DaVinci to save those as default subtitle settings please?
I think you can save a subtitle in a power bin. Then you can drag it into a new project. I think that would work....I'll have to look into it.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you! Previously, once I set the subtitle preferences on a timeline, it would keep all of them no matter how many videos I did on each previous version of DV. Weirdly now I have to reset them with each video on the same timeline! Odd.
Thank you for the video! Your daughter is lovely!
😁👍 thank you for watching!
@@JasonYadlovski
Unbelievable. Such a simple thing...but thank you!
Okay best video out there! Straight to the point and crisp video. Thank you so much! Life Saver!
Thanks for your kind words! 😁👍
legend how did you make that background. I am a Hip Hop artist & that background looks AMAZING
Thanks! It’s just a white backdrop with 2 RGB LED lights in the side and one set of LED strip lights along the top. You can make it any color you want. 😁👍
Great explanation and tutorial. Thank you
You’re welcome!
amazing tut. btw, does anyone know where the "customise caption" tick box is? is it a pro feature ? cos i only have the default "use track style" tick box. i want to be able to keyframe coloring/ highlighting my subtitle . thank in advance.
could you pleeeease help me? i have a problem when exporting a file with subs and then adding it to the video in youtube, the timing is wrong! that's the time in the file 1) 01:00:03,599 and here it is how youtube sees it: 03:35.. and 2) 01:00:06,603 -> 6:35 3) 01:00:09,022 -> 9:00. what should I do?
Is it a formatting issue maybe? I’d double check TH-cam help to see exactly what TH-cam needs for a subtitle file. Then double check that with what you are getting from resolve. Something must be off somewhere I think.
@@JasonYadlovski thank you for your reply! I will do that! but my guess so far is that youtube thinks it's minutes while it must be seconds
@@JasonYadlovski Yeah! Thanks for the video by the way, lots of good tips! 😄
You’re welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
Is this for Studio version? I have Free, and when I right-click, can only "add track", rather than "add subtitle track"
You should be able to do this in both the studio version and the free version.
@@JasonYadlovski I have the same problem... I'm very frustrated, can only do a subtitle file import
bro how do i move the whole set of subtitles in the same time. love your vid btw
I'd select them all, then just move them where you want.
hi
im totally new at this and i started uding for adding sound to my animations, but my effects doesnt work. i put in reverb and doesnt reverbs (xD). Can u please tell me what could be the problem?
What kind of audio are you trying to put the reverbon? Have you adjusted the settings and the reverb window? Are you applying on a track level or on a clip level?
Thanks man, very useful!
You’re welcome! 😁👍
Do you format the character different from dialog?
I imagine you would make it all the same. I don’t really use subtitles in my videos, but if you were making some sort of film, I assume they would be the same. I’m sure there is some standard for editing subtitles, I just don’t know what that is.
Great info here. Thanks for the video.
Is there any way to "soften" the entry and exit of these subtitle clips ?
I don't think so...🤔
I know I'm late to the party here but - I'd like to take already existing captions from an srt file that I've added to a timeline and convert them into basic text elements - so that I can animate them (we do sermon clips and try to do things like have certain words change size or font). Any tips on how to pull this off?
I’m not sure if there’s an automated way to do that. If there is, I haven’t done that.
Charming ending
😜 Thanks! Love my munchkins.....Even when they interrupt.....often....a lot, haha. Thankfully it was just 1 day of virtual school. 😁
@@JasonYadlovski did you not like my "Hack"? Sorry if it was unwanted.
I didn’t see the hack comment, TH-cam removed it before I could see it. 🤷🏻♂️🤔
It was removed both times the comment was posted. Guess it had something they didn’t like. 🤷🏻♂️
@@JasonYadlovski it was just an explanation on how to automatically transcribe the audio from a video with free tools.

It was what I was looking for. Very easy to follow the steps. It works!
Great!
Thanks mate ! I was looking for a couple of hours why wasn´t my text showing into my rendered video, and you explained easily on minute 25
You’re welcome!
I just came to know how to automatically generate subtitles for the whole video and then we can edit them from there. Do you know how?
Excellent tutorial 🤟.
Cheers for all the effort man - really appreciated 🙏🏻
Thanks Gary! 😁
how to save preset, color, text, scale, position for subtitle?
I'm not sure if you can save a presets for it, but you only have to change the settings once for all of the subtites, and everything will update accordingly
You can to some degree alter the text background thankfully if it's feeling a bit too close to the text. If you enable the Overide Sizing option in the Background category on the active subtitle, you get some parameters that help fix the closeness fairly easily.
Nice! Thanks for sharing that! 😁👍
@@JasonYadlovski you can also simply just add spaces before and after your text. :) Anyways, love the videos man! Keep up the great work, you have helped me out s@!t loads in making mine better! Cheers. Vlad.
Once again… another great video that really helped me out. Thanks a bunch 👍🏻
You’re welcome!
I am very glad that I stumbled upon your video
Thanks for watching!
I saw that but that means I have to add the timing stamps by hand and divide the text too...
I don't think there is any way around some of the manual work. You could upload the video to TH-cam, let TH-cam make the subtitles, then download the file and work with that. Takes a lot of work out of it for you.
Jason, how to delete a subtitle clip in 18? When i delete it with the delete button, it is cutting the video length.
Try the backspace key instead of the delete key.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks!
@@JasonYadlovski But why does it do that anyway?
thanks for the video, but i have one problem and dont know if you can help me, when i add subtitles boxes the video just becomes laggy, every clip that has a subtitle becomes laggy and its driving me crazy, dont know if anybody also had this kind of problem, hel plz ;C
Reason in these types of Instructional Videos I for one must Stop and replay many segments in order to make sure I understand and might even remember the material better.
JMHO Bro.
Great suggestion man! 👍😁
I have two subtitle tracks and only one of them feels like behaving a ta time. I'm trying to burn them in at the same time but nothing works for me. Any tips?
I don’t think you can do 2 subtitle tracks at once.
Hello, thank you for your video. When I added subtitles, that don't start right at the beginning and export the video with a separate SRT file - everytime the subs are out of sync. Any tips? Best
Can I export both 608 and 708 files at the same time?
I’m not sure what you mean by 608 and 708 but I don’t know, you probably have to do them separately.
How to do that pop and focus screen and black background
It’s done in Screenflow, my screen recording software.
@@JasonYadlovski ok sir thnku
Hi Jason and all, I need to embed two lines of subtitles (in two different languages) and I need them to be in different colors. Do you have a tip how I can do that? Thanks
I would just make a second subtitle track and make the 2nd set of subtitles in there.
@@JasonYadlovski yes, it's what I did actually, pitty they don't make the possibility to make two subtitles tracks visible at the same time :)
Why would you want both visible at the same time? I would imagine the person watching only needs one, not both. 🤔
@@JasonYadlovski For multilingual audience, I am working on a live event :)
I’d just put it in as regular text then.
I have the subs burned in option enabled .. but at final render it will not show
Something must not be correct, if you chose burn in, they would burn in. Did you select the correct subtitle track to use for the export?

Greeting, first off thanks for you info. and helpinh us a lot, if you dont mind i have a qustion, my problem is, while i am adding subt. it does not appeare on my vedio, how can i manage this? thanks for your time and concern
Hi! If you’ve added a subtitle in the subtitle track, are you sure that the track is turned on so it appears in the video?
Does exporting the subtitles to a srt file keep the subtitles as styled? Or does it take the styling and coloring etc away and you'd have to do it all over again when importing it to a media?
I don’t know, I have not tried that. Do you have to give it a try and see how it worked out.
Appreciate the tutorial! Concise and comprehensive. Learned everything I needed in on video
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Another great one.
Thanks! 👍😁
I do believe you can import subtitles....🤔
@@JasonYadlovski I did a little bit of searching and came across a web based txt to srt converter. Not perfect but beats typing in 39 pages of transcript!
Hi Jason! Thanks for the video! :)
A quick question: I embed my subtitles into the video.
@@JasonYadlovski Hi! Thank you for your (quick) reply! :)
I didn't see any options there, but I'll keep on looking ^^
Useful.
Thanks for dropping a comment!
That sounds like an awesome feature! They don't have it in Resolve yet, but hopefully they'll add it in soon!
Hoping I could do that in Resolve, an incredible feature on Facebook/Instagram reels so guess it's a matter of time, we'll get em.
How would I fade in the subtitles?
Great lesson Jason, thank you
You’re welcome Yevgen! Thanks for checking it out! 😁👍
Hello, i was doing my subtitle, unfortunately after all the subtitle is done I realized there are some edit I need to do with the video track, however my subtitle won’t move with the video track as it was imported, is there a way I can fix that?

Maybe you need to link the subtitle and video track...🤔

In the deliver page, there’s an option to have the subtitles burn into the video. You have to check it on, it’s on the left-hand side of the Deliver page towards the bottom. If you don’t want to burn them into the video, you can export a subtitle file that you can then upload to TH-cam or other service.

How do you delete a sub title? I can't ! unless I over write it
You should be able to just click on the subtitle clip and then hit delete to get rid of it.

You might have to use manual text if you can't get the subtitles to change to the colors you want.
