I thought Davinci Colour Managed was magic until I saw what it did to Fusion titles, making them grey. Do you have a solution to that? Thanks for all your work on these videos. They’re really helpful.
Dude, I saw the title about adjustment layers and I just freaking yawned. Then I watched it and man you really showed me a timesaver. I also really like your style. And, a subscriber is born! Now, off to another one of your videos.
At last I found this video. I was googling for like 30 minutes how to apply effect only to part of clip (frame) and this video explains this. You saved a lot of my nerve cells man, thank you.
6:12 is there a way to remote grade an adjustment layer? I want to color correct 1 adjustment clip across multiple timelines, similar if if was the same video clip using remote grade.
Thank you! You asked at the end what I'm needing to work on.... It would be audio, especially dialog when there is background noise and where multiple people are talking at different intensities. You have some videos on that and I'm still working on it. Thanks!
Awesome stuff as always. Hey, instead of doing the grid overlay to match eye-lines, what if you just lowered the opacity of the top adjustment layer so you could see the position of the eyes in the clip below then adjusted position? Seems a bit easier than adding that additional grid effect and changing its parameters
Heck yeah Phillip! This is a great tip and I honestly hadn't thought of doing it that way. Much faster and simpler! Thanks for sharing. The grid is still great for layouts and horizon lines, but love this idea of roughly matching up eyelines. Solid!

I have never been much of an artistic" video editor. I am very basic and simple because I thought it would be too complicated. But man, you've inspired by several of your videos. Thank you seriously, I think this is going to help me to improve A LOT!
DR moved where the "Show Power Bins" option is located. You have to click the 3 dots in the upper right of your media pool. Great feature, just hard to find. Love your videos Chadwick! Fast, and awesome!
I'd love to see workflow tips. For example I create UI interface tutorial videos with talking head and screensharing plug additional assets as overlays. I find I'm cutting a lot of clips and repeating a lot of tasks manually but every time I watch one of your videos, I 🤦♀about how much time I've wasted doing things one by one. Like this video! I just one-by-one color graded a 20 min video that had over 60 clips because I didn't know about these tricks with adjustment clips. Thanks again for the amazing content!
This should be one of the first 3 or 5 videos you watch about DaVinci Resolve. If you are thinking about it, use it DaVinci Resolve is incredible even on free version. If you are just starting out in editing or creating your own content; this should be one of the first 10 videos you should watch (in addition to how to use a camera etc). Super helpful guide! Adjustment Clips + Power Bins = your own stream/channel identity of cuts/transitions/fx/intros etc.
Good stuff my man! I started Resolve at the beginning of the year to edit some video from Thailand. I really enjoyed it and it has since turned into a hobby. I think I've made some good progress since then. My goal with video editing is to keep it fun, challenging, and to try to apply a new skill with every video. I just stumbled onto your videos and think you will help me get to the next level. I didn't even know about adjustment clips, I will be practicing with these in my next video. Appreciate it!
Always quick and concise. Love it. I know I can slow it down or rewatch a section, if needed. Thank you for doing your vid’s this way. Keep doin’ the great work, Chadwick! Joe
Thank you for your content, its very helpful. Are there any indicators in the color page that tell you are working on an adjustment clip and not the actual video?

Archiving here - th-cam.com/video/TsKwaJtQFA0/w-d-xo.html and more recently here - th-cam.com/video/KtQsF-tZiYQ/w-d-xo.html I really appreciate you taking the time to comment with some great ideas, you aren't the only one that needs guidance in these areas so it will help a lot of people.
Thanks for this! Could you talk about 'Better Meta Data Management' or 'Meta Data Workflow' in DR. I love editing in DR but miss how easy meta data tagging "keywording" in FCP is.
Chadwick, I love your tutorials!! Can you please investigate why DaVinci Resolve does not have a shortcut that allows you to select multiple sections within a clip and label them as favorites at the same time…can we get something similar in resolve?? Thank you!
@@CreativeVideoTips wow. That is awesome, thank you. You are one of my all-time TH-cam favs!!! Much appreciate your videos. Can you do one for the Resolve Keyboard from Black Magic? I am going to buy one or the speed editor, and am having trouble deciding!
the adjustment layer being used to make transitions is good. As these can be nested with a sound effect or put the SFX into the fusion tab. And than put the transition into a super bin for easy reuse. I am tired of looking for SFX and applying them over and over again!
hello, as always very good video. what i wonder is how you track an object in the adjustment layer with power window? maybe you have an idea or solution, thank you very much.
You are awesome bro... I have been looking to get the best video on how to use adjustment clip, and finnaly I found it Thank you so much please make a video on transitions
Great stuff! I am new to Davinci (I love it so much more than Premiere, especially that you pay for it once and that's it), and this video helped me out tremendously. It made my editing so much easier... . Thanks a lot! Subscribed...
this is phenomenal . thank you for making such a concise tutorial! QUESTION: is there anyway to have a keyboard shortcut to Insert Adjustment Clip so we don't have to find it in the panel (even if it's Favorited we have to switch panels). QUESTION 2: Do you think we will ever get the ability to add motion blur to transform ON THE EDIT PAGE? thanks again
Your videos are great. But as someone who is not a professional editor so for someone like me i would love it if you would move through the material more slowly. I would love more help creating an adjustment clip that zooms in and out - like you described but with a few more examples and a little more details on how to zoom in and out using the transform for the zoom and position options. I tried adding the adjustment clip above my main clip to zoom in and out. But somehow I added a transform keyframe because my play head was on the main clip when I set the transform but now the zoom is going past the adjustment clip track and I don't know how to find it to fix it. Also once you add an adjustment clip above your main clip you cannot access the transform effects on the main clip. Even if you wanted to do a regular key frame on another part of the clip. Then you would have to cut the clip which creates different problems. Also is there a way to fade in and out of the zoom with the adjustment clips? Another tip I would love a video on is how to link clips and still be able to add keyframes. What happens to me is that I split a clip so I have several clips that need to stay connected to the audio because it is just me talking while teaching yoga. So if I have several cuts and then work on a clip that has been cut and has other clips ahead in the time line that are cut, if I move the clip it messes up the other clips but if I link the clips then I cannot add key frames. So I have to link and unlink but sometimes I forget to link again and then I can get into trouble.
Thanks Gayle, I always appreciate hearing from you. I understand that people learn at different speeds and come from different backgrounds. I think fast and end up talking very fast when the camera is on. However, I'm not trying to leave anyone behind. Please utilize the slower playback option on youtube for now. But know that I'm taking this feedback to use it for future tutorials that are more "back to the basics" type focus. I'm not fully following your question about not accessing transforms on the main clip. You should be able to select it with your mouse and still make adjustments down there. Just know the adjustment clip on top happens after the clip level changes. You question about linked selection is a good one and I'm making a note to clarify how that works in a future tutorial. It can be confusing.
When the adjustment clip is on top of the main clip, the icon to click to reveal the keyframe points on the bottom right of the title strip for the main clip is gone but it shows up on the bottom right of the main clip. Is there a way I can send you a photo so you can see what I mean?
Coming from Avid MC my main problem on the edit page is not being able to toggle between timeline and source clip. Wondering why nobody addresses this basic issue. On Avid I can toggle to the source clip, solo monitor an audio channel, set in and out points and route the selected channel to the timeline. In DR I have to delete audio channels in the clip attributes before editing or bring all audio to the timeline and delete then unwanted audio. Or I have to create timelines for my source clips as a workaround with the restriction of copying files to the timeline instead of editing. Being able to toggle to the source clip and routing audio would make editing in DR so much easier. That’s my main issue with DR.
I feel your pain, and the routing is a problem for sure (I mean it mostly doesn't exist) in the way we are use to from Avid. You can however toggle timeline and source (or source timelines). I cover that in this tutorial here and hope you find it helpful - th-cam.com/video/bNZejqkl3AQ/w-d-xo.html Edit page, source - record timeline editing routing especially for multichannel audio is my number 1 feature request!
Thanks! Thought I was the only one with that request… editing complex documentaries for broadcast, the routing is the main issue not to switch completely from Avid to Resolve. Maybe this issue would get more attention from Blackmagic with a dedicated video? 😏😀
great tutorial thanks, any tips regarding using compound clips and audio sync ? I have footage with interviews and 4 tracks that get messy timelines. need a cleaner way to edit. butalll tracks LAVS and BOOM needed for audio online
It is so good to see you Chadwick. Thank you for sharing your power tips. Your videos really help take editing to the next level. For me, your edit page ideas like your "15 second" techniques open up new ways on how creatively think about an edit. Thank you for taking the time to make and share these videos.
Thanks Kevin, great to hear from you. I'm glad you like that 15 second cutdown trick, I remember the first time an editor, his name was Nick, showed me how he basically did that with a title or some generator that was muted and I've used it ever since.
I appreciate this feedback. I’m testing different mics out and neglected to account for that on this Octava. Please take a listen to my upcoming video I hope to post later this week to see if it’s improved.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you! So, I can nudge the audio by sub-frames, but not the video? I will re-listen to the tute. Does Resolve have a function which recognizes and matches audio from different clips to align in the timeline? My second cameraman is recording short shots of closeups while the main camera records the entire performance. How do I line them all up?
Nicely done again Chadwick - I have had more than a few people ask me about using a compound clip with audio to raise and lower the clips master volume ( not the track ) with keyframes inside the audio staying in tact. Now on my system that works find, but for a few others, they lose their audio doing this. Is there another way to set master volume at clip level of a clip with keyframes in it?
Thank Jim - this is a good question, but not something I've encountered before because I've never mixed with a compound audio clip. I double check the manual though and it doesn't say there are any limitations so I'll see if I run into this issue tomorrow. You "should" be able to select a keyframed clip and then use the usual shortcuts option command plus and minus & have it hold all it's relative adjustments. You're talking about the master clip volume of the compound clip correct?
Mornin Jim, I just tested this on a few clips and I'm not seeing any issues or bugs here. I am on v18 beta build 14 on M1 Max. Nested audio keyframes, compound clip keyframes they all seem to be working as expected on my machine. Mixing or mastering a compound clip is an interesting concept. Now I'm very curious how this compares to committing it to disk with a mixdown instead.
@@CreativeVideoTips The guy I was helping had the problem. When I tested it, it worked as expected. But without the compound clip on the audio. I couldn't get mine to use a master volume either. Must be a trick to that.
Hey, this is so on point for me, thank you. sometimes you lose me when you get into the terminology and jargon of the industry and since I'm just starting to figure this out, would you consider making a few videos illustrating some of the working language that editors should know about? just a thought for the future, thanks again RTG.

Thanks! Thought I was the only one with that request… editing complex documentaries for broadcast, the routing is the main issue not to switch completely from Avid to Resolve. Maybe this issue would get more attention from Blackmagic with a dedicated video? 😏😀
Tips I didn't know I needed (yet!) Thanks
Very useful! Thank you 🙏🏻
You're welcome!
Great tutorial, very usefull and the lenght of your videos are just perfect. Short to the point and clear. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the helpful feedback Peter (and thanks so much for watching).
Oktava mic for the win !
Heck yeah! I'm just getting use to it and having a lot of fun trying different mics out.
Amazing thanks
Just what I’ve been looking for
Nice one! I love adjustment clips... so versatile :)
great tutorial thanks, any tips regarding using compound clips and audio sync ? I have footage with interviews and 4 tracks that get messy timelines. need a cleaner way to edit. butalll tracks LAVS and BOOM needed for audio online
It is so good to see you Chadwick. Thank you for sharing your power tips. Your videos really help take editing to the next level.
For me, your edit page ideas like your "15 second" techniques open up new ways on how creatively think about an edit. Thank you for taking the time to make and share these videos.
Thanks Kevin, great to hear from you. I'm glad you like that 15 second cutdown trick, I remember the first time an editor, his name was Nick, showed me how he basically did that with a title or some generator that was muted and I've used it ever since.
please learn what sibilance is, and how to reduce it... harsh bro. BUT, I do love the tips, thanks!
I appreciate this feedback. I’m testing different mics out and neglected to account for that on this Octava. Please take a listen to my upcoming video I hope to post later this week to see if it’s improved.
you rock man.. a level above everyone I've seen doin DR tutorials!
You rock! Thank you for spending some of your precious time to watch and hopefully learn a new thing or two.
Thank you! new subscriber, and very green. Music Videos. Obviously all video has to sync to the music master. So, sub-frame moves?
th-cam.com/video/SGlnSuJ_M3s/w-d-xo.html
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you! So, I can nudge the audio by sub-frames, but not the video? I will re-listen to the tute. Does Resolve have a function which recognizes and matches audio from different clips to align in the timeline? My second cameraman is recording short shots of closeups while the main camera records the entire performance. How do I line them all up?
Timecode: 3:19 Wip pan transition
Subbed definitely brought value to the table
Pure excellence, as per usual. Thank you!
awesome video - well presented - just all around well-made
Nicely done again Chadwick - I have had more than a few people ask me about using a compound clip with audio to raise and lower the clips master volume ( not the track ) with keyframes inside the audio staying in tact.
@@CreativeVideoTips yes
This is how i like my tutorials. Gems at the start 0:13. That swap shortcut imma use bro! Lol
Hey, this is so on point for me, thank you. sometimes you lose me when you get into the terminology and jargon of the industry and since I'm just starting to figure this out, would you consider making a few videos illustrating some of the working language that editors should know about? just a thought for the future, thanks again RTG.
Amazing and beautiful tutorial . Great tips.
wow thank you i will practice it many thanks
All the best
The first tip dropped, and almost hit myself in the head. Zeez I feel stupid now. Brilliant! As always, excellent video, thanks
Another great video, thanks!
Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! Great information to help my editing!
Love your work mate! A video going over advanced keyframe editing in the edit page or even how to simplify the keyframes would be great
Thanks for the idea! Noted.
