I love using these sorts of hidden transitions in my edits. Normally the Edge Wipe transition is good enough for my needs but this is a good way to get detailed with your masking if the situation requires it. Thanks for the vid Jason!
I would add that for best results, you probably want to go from one clip to another with a similar velocity. Having the first clip transition to another clip scrolling the opposite direction or to a clip that is stationary may be a bit more jarring. That may be the effect that you are going for, but chances are you will want to have the 2 clips scrolling the same direction at a similar speed. On a side note, you mentioned placing a point down for the pen tool. I know that this is used in a lot of different types of applications, but I think it would be worthy to go over how to use it well for masking, or perhaps it could be made into a series.
Good explanation! I learn new little things in Resolve all the time, and this is one that has really leveled up my work. Side note, you can use masks and jpg exports from the color page as kind of a poor man's photoshop for thumbnails and such ;)
Thanks Jason ~ another thumbs up Vid. Came to DR from Vegas Pro ... What I like about your vids is that there are rarely 'What the F*** did he just click' to do that' moments.
For the second wipe, could you copy the 2nd node from the first transition and connect it up to the 1st Node from the 2nd transition so that it copies over all of the settings that you created the first time? That way you only have to adjust the mask?
Great tutorial you got a new subscriber. Also only thing is how do I fix it, I had it the mask down and then when I went to add a lut and color grade the mask went away 😢. Help please?
What is better for workflow? Using masks in Fusion or Edit? I meam in terms of color correction I will always use the color tab, but I am a bit stucked whats better if I just want to hide and merge some masks.
I have a problem that the preview goes black if I add alpha output and the mask is finished. Tried to dig forums but nothing, I have alpha the input and output connected, the node is enabled, but still... it's driving me crazy.
I don't know why but when I am done with masking and put my other clip under the masked clip it just stays black... Is there any way you could help me figure out what's wrong? I literally did the EXACT same you did
Hey Jason , I have a question about Resolve not related to this video, and I know are the Resolve guy , so I thought I'd reach out. So here is my problem , when I upload vids to Resolve (18) now it changes the entire color or lighting of the vid, like the white balance is way to high or something but it didn't do this all the time it started this after I tried and well changed some presets and settings but I can't remember what I changed ,so my actual questions is what can I do to fix this or should I uninstall and reinstall altogether?
Hi! It sounds like maybe you adjusted some of the color settings that can be found in color management section of the project settings. Try setting the color science to DaVinci YRGB and the timeline color space to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 if you are on PC or Rec.709A if you are on a mac. Let me know if that helps.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for getting back to me and I think I have tried that but I doesn't seem to work and or save after closing the program even after hitting save presets. However I will try again and let you know. Thanks again
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you for this! I've followed along using your video a couple months ago and it turned out great, but this time my alpha node disappeared so I came back and you provided the answer! Much thanks.
Jason, you don't know how much you've helped me through the years on how to edit videos. I've really leveled up my editing skills thanks to you! :)

Thanks! I have definitely used stills from the color page as part of my thumbnails, it works great! 😁👍
nice tuto bro, that solved!
Thanks for watching!
this guy is pretty smart
Thanks! 😜
is there a way to make a whole new mask for the next frame instead of having to move the mask points and shape it to the next frame?
You could create a new node and add the new mask on to the new node.
Cool tutorial.
Thanks and thank you for watching! 😁👍
I tried and loved it!
😁👍
" Click on this guy right here " Oh man you are funny, I am learning here with fun...I want to see u hit 1M soon bro❤

Sure you could do that if you'd like. It's just a quick to recreate it too. 😜

Awesome, thanks and welcome to the community! Maybe try adding the LUT after the mask? Or use parallel nodes maybe?
@@JasonYadlovski thanks that helped, I know now add the LUT first before doing the mask transition 😅
Very nice!
Thanks man! I appreciate you watching!
this help me so much..
Great!
Question: why didn't you use the tracking? From what I could see there was enough contrast.
You could do that. There's lots of ways to do things. 😁👍
@@JasonYadlovski I know you can, I was just wondering why you choose to key frame it? Like is it better in any why?
No reason, that's just the first way that popped in my head and i went with it.
thank you!
You're welcome!
U are incredible
Thanks!
Do you prefer the color page over the Fusion page for this?
For something basic like this I’d probably do it in the color page.
Thank You !

I think all of the tabs are so interchangeable that I would just do it whatever way is easier and faster.
How do I add feather to multiple key frames that I have done in davinci resolve?
Thanks
You’re welcome!
how i can down opacity of particular part of image and video ?
Personally, this is just what I needed #maskingscaresme 🤣
Excellent as always Jason - cheers man 👊✌
Awesome, Hope the video helps! Thanks for watching Gary! I appreciate you!

So if I had a video file with an object that has a transparent background, could I make an object wipe transition that I could just drop anywhere?
Thanks for the help, everything was working until i did render in plays. All of my keyframes diseperd. Do you know why?
Strange, it should keep them.....🤔
I have a problem that the preview goes black if I add alpha output and the mask is finished. Tried to dig forums but nothing, I have alpha the input and output connected, the node is enabled, but still... it's driving me crazy.
how do you zoom when you are connecting the lines?
Hold Shift or Alt or Ctrl. I forget off the top of my head. 😜

Could check that you connected the alpha out in the color tab node. (The blue square on the node to alpha out)
@@JasonYadlovski Yes that's the problem. when I add my alpha output and connect it, it just turns black instead of the clip I put under
@@JasonYadlovski NVM! fixed it😀 Apparently if you have a adjustment layer with a crop effect above it, the masking doesn't work or something :)
i dont have the keyframe icon
😢 hope they do something like premiere..its easier there..but i love vinciiiii😂
It's better than Premiere. 😜 and BMD keeps making it better and better. 😁
Can’t we use auto tracking feature to mask out ?
You can, just depends on the clips and what you want to do. Many ways to do things here in resolve. Thanks for watching!

I can't find the keyframe icon. Where is this?
Which keyframes icon are you looking for? The ones in the inspector?
I found it. I am using dual monitor. So it is other side. Thank you!
Y’all I don’t see the option to use alpha output. Do I need to upgrade my davinci to the full version to use it?
You should just have to right click in the node area of the color page and choose 'add alpha output'. It's there.
@@JasonYadlovski found it thanks

premiere masks > davince masks.
