Hi! I am BRAND new to video editing, I have never done anything of the sort before, but this video made the sound editing fun and easy to understand for me!! Thank you!!
Another good way to get volume from a mic is to simply pull it closer to you. This can help increase the volume, give it a different warmth and help it focus less on other noise around the environment. A good technique for moderate to good mics is to stick your thumb and pinky as far away from each other on one hand and touch the thumb to your lips and and your pinky to the mic. Hey 👋....I had a question.... should we use two compressors together?(Multiband and Dynamic)? Or should we use only one? And second, I wanna add a timelapse video to my timeline, so if I take 60-75 imgs and then put them one by one, one do I make them look like a timelapse? And if this ain't possible, is there anywhere from which I can download a sunset timelapse and use in YT without getting a copyright strike?
Hey - Yes you can use a compressor in the Dynamics and a multi band compressor. I do that on my audio. For the Time-lapse effect, Take look at Billy Rybka's channel, I think he's got a video on how to do it in Resolve.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Here’s a whole video on Dynamics th-cam.com/video/H08721S3Z38/w-d-xo.html Here’s specifically using send/listen for audio ducking: th-cam.com/video/dw88MGM9w0o/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching! 😁👍💯
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for answering and taking the time to provide the links. I really appreciate it, cause you have hell of a lot AWESOME videos at your channel!
I so much agree with the comments - you are amazing! One question I have a video with two audio tracks, one voice over recorded with a blue snowball and one interview done with a Rode shotgun mic (helpfully it has a dyson hand dryer humming away in the background, which is an utter nightmare!). Anyway, should I be doing the adjustments on the clips individually or as an overall adjustment at the end of all the video editiing? Thanks again so much for the brilliant content!
Thanks! If possible I would work on the audio from each microphone on a track level first. Once you get it the best you can, if individual clips need a little adjustment, you can do that but it will be easiest and quickest to do it on a track level first.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you so much that is very helpful! Also, the next time I have to film in the office I am going to put an out of order sign on the toilet as that hand dryer is a nightmare :)
Given that my hearing ain't what it used to be, some of the differences are pretty subtle, but they *do* add up. I've tried some as you were going through this and will for sure be using them in the future. Thanks for the tips! Question: Other than the right mic and a pop filter, what can you do to reduce plosives in post?
Thanks for watching! Other than a pop filter, you can try speaking past the mic instead of directly into it. I did that most of the time with my Yeti, even though it had a pop filter. Here's a video on how I set up my mic and got the best out of it: th-cam.com/video/NvfhsRSv4QE/w-d-xo.html

Thank you so much for sharing, very useful! However, why the audio of this video is far better than the edited audio? I expected you can tune the edited audio to the same level. Any suggestion?
Hi, thanks for watching! It all depends on how you edit the audio. I have a preset I use for all of my TH-cam videos but in this video I just did all of the editing on the fly. It may not match exactly what I use on a regular basis. 😁👍
Thanks! Here’s a video on how to save presets: How to SAVE Audio PRESETS in DaVinci Resolve 17 | Quick Tip Tuesday! th-cam.com/video/ll_9tz8Q7cQ/w-d-xo.html
Put the mic on a mic stand just out of frame, record peaks at +/- -9dB, use some ('sound' blankets) if your room has a lot of reflection. It will save so much work in post. A little Eq and compression should get you halve way there. If you listen to something that is louder; you perceive it as better... If you compare, get things equally loud! Happy mixing!
You’re welcome, glad you found it helpful! Here’s a video on how to save presets, just go to the section on audio presets. th-cam.com/video/5sPW1C4d4JM/w-d-xo.html
Awesome tutorial fam, Though I'm curious about how could I save my work as a preset to be able to automatically add it to my other bits of audio without the need of repeating the same process multiple times, Thanks!
Hi Jason, all of these reverb presets are a bit too much. What reverb settings do you recommend for a singing voice? I need a more subtle setting than the ones offered by the presets.
Hi! Without knowing what the vocal sounds like and what effect you are going for, what I would do is to choose one of the presets, then go to the wet/dry mix dial, turn it to zero and slowly turn it up. That way just a little of the effect is mixed in and you should be able to make a nice balance. It's rare that you would use any of the presets at full blast. Hope that works out!
Hey jason, thanks for awesome tutorials. I watched your below tuts and testing for about hours as I am very beginner in audio processing. 1. Audio crash course - oct 2019 2. This video 3. EQ vocals separate video - feb 2019 4. Noise reduction - may 2020 After watching above tut and experimenting I have NEVER understood what De-Esser do. I expected that De-esser will remove fan noise but fan noise was removed by "Gate In Dynamics" and "Band 4 in Multinand Compressor". Can you please tell how can I identify or test/differentiate De-esser sound. What sound should I record to experiment De-Esser effect ?
Hey Man, thanks for checking out my videos! Glad you are finding some good info in my audio videos! So the De-Esser removes or reduces the harsh 'S' sounds in vocals. I recently made a video all about it. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/SFERua4J8pc/w-d-xo.html To test it you can say something 'Sally Sells Sea Shells at the Sea Shore' Lots of 'S' in there for you to hear the De-Esser working. As you mentioned a fan in the background will be better removed by other tools, not the De-Esser.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you so much Jason. I will surely check this video shared by you and test out again on previous audio and with Sally statement audio. Thanks. Will get back to you if I don't figure out difference.
Hi Jason, thank you for showing the adjustments you do in your audio. sounds nice. I have a question for you. I have tried removing some radio background music in some videos. I was wondering if you tried removed background music using the original soundtrack when inverting the waveform phase.
Hi! I haven't tried that method of removing the background noise. I find if the background noise is too loud it's really tough to remove and just keep the vocals. At least with the tools in DaVinci Resolve. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for checking out the video! I forget exactly what I did here, but I'm thinking the louder volume was because of setting audio levels properly. But I'd have to watch the video again to refresh my memory. 😜
Thanks you for all these videos, I suffer with a bit of a lisp when talking with Cha and sh sounds ie the front end of saying channel or shower sounds terrible, please could you advise on how I could reduce these sounds?
Thank you so much. it is very helpful. I had a mic which caused very short milliseconds breaks in my audio footage. do you know a way of disguise those breaks? Thanks again
You’re welcome! I’m not sure if you’ll be able to remove the little breaks. Maybe if you try using an effect like a little bit of reverb or something. You could also try using the chorus effect to make the voice a little bit wider sounding. Not sure any of it would work but you could give it a try
Super helpful, Jason, thank you! I have 2 questions for you: 1 - when I'm scrubbing band 3 and 4 for "weird" sounds...what exactly are we looking for? Something that just sounds really hollow and odd? I've found some really odd sounding stuff usually between 1-2k range, but once I dip the gain and replay the audio...I can't seem to hear the difference. I DID hear it when I brought the gain all the way up to scrub though... 2 - Can you explain what Hold and Release means in the tools?
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! To answer your questions - 1) You just looking for something that sounds bad. For example, muffled, it has a piercing quality to it, sound very hallow or when you hit that frequency, you think, ew that sounds bad. Then drop the Gain just a bit below the 0 line. The goal is just to pull out frequencies that sound harsh. If you reduce the gain too much, it's going to sound bad as well. Usually with EQ, less is more and always cut before you boost anything. 2) Hold is referring to the length of time that the compressor (I'm assuming you mean in the compressor) remains active after it stops receiving a signal. For example, there is talking, then the talking stops. Hold determines how long the compressor is active after the talking stop. Release refers to how long it takes from the time the compressor stops (determined by the hold) until the compressor is completely off/inactive. So do you want the audio to go back to 'normal' fast or slow? A larger Release means it gradually fade back to normal over a long period of time. Does that all make sense? If not, let me know. Hope this helps!
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for that, Jason! The question about hold + release is actually pertaining to using Gate. I know I'm to mess with those 2 options if I'm hearing my voice cut in and cut out, but I wasn't sure what they 2 options actually did. I guess I want to make the gate "less sensitive" if you get what I'm saying. Sometimes I would be speaking just a bit low, and the Gate would pick that up and cut it off completely.
The hold and release mean the same thing for the gate. It should work in the same fashion. If you want it to be less sensitive, you'd probably want to also adjust the threshold, range and ratio.
Your compressor settings weren’t doing anything other than increasing volume. How do I know? Look at the gain reduction meter - the compressor wasn’t kicking in. Need to bring the threshold down to trigger it.
I feel like there are a million tutorials on visuals, but not a lot on audio or how each tool works. You did a really great job of explaining everything. Love your work bro , helped me a lot in learning davinci resolve16.
I don’t have a mic , i have started my new TH-cam channel in Yoga, i shoot videos through my nikon slr and smartphones. I get many issues in audio due to noises. Do make more videos to enhance audio . Also i would like you to put videos of how to use fusion, object tracking and 3d texts
Awesome, thanks! Thank you for checking out my videos, I appreciate it!
I'll keep the videos coming! I've got a whole playlist for Audio tips in DaVinci Resovle. Check it out on my channel. Congrats on starting your channel!
Jason Yadlovski already do , do post how to use fusion in resolve16
Will do, have some videos about it coming soon!
Still a great video a year later ;) Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Awesome video. Thank you for this!

Nice one, you even hired Saul Goodman as voice of your video. Very impressive.
🤣
do you have any content about what the attack, hold and release parameters do to our effect? great video!
Hi! Sure I’ve got videos on just about every effect. Here’s the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLsOqsM0-aW4EaXsSuYwy7z40s9tnx3pEp.html
thank you so much!!! so helpful :)

@@JasonYadlovski YES!!!!!THANKS FOR REMINDING MAN
Very very helpful. Thanks a lot! I would love to learn how to use the Dynamics - Compressor ‘Send’ and "Listen"

Thanks so much Samuel! Doing my best to help others out. 😁👍
thank you, very easy to follow!

🤣 good plan!
GREAT VIDEO THANK YOU VERY MUCH
You’re welcome!
@@JasonYadlovski Yep, that did the trick. That's a great video, BTW. Terrific information!

Very nice. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Amazing video, thanks heaps

Thankssss brother. Cheers from Colombia

This is great! How do save this as a preset?😀
Thanks for sharing the tips! 😁👍
Thank you for this tutorial....you really helped me....how can i save the presets for future use...you somehow forgt to say that
You’re welcome, glad you found it helpful!
Thanks! Check out this video to save a preset: th-cam.com/video/ll_9tz8Q7cQ/w-d-xo.html

Hi Jason,
all of these reverb presets are a bit too much.
1. Audio crash course - oct 2019
2. This video
3. EQ vocals separate video - feb 2019
4. Noise reduction - may 2020
After watching above tut and experimenting I have NEVER understood what De-Esser do.
I always learn something from your videos. I didn't know that in EQ the bands can be switched on and off with the red label!
Awesome! Glad you learn a little something from my videos! 👍
Very funny to watch video editor mix their audio as an audio engineer !
Thanks for watching!
I love this awesome
Thanks! 👍
Sounds great...Thanks
Thanks!
For the comparison at the end surely you should have both at the same volume? Great video though, appreciate it!
Thanks for checking out the video! I forget exactly what I did here, but I'm thinking the louder volume was because of setting audio levels properly. But I'd have to watch the video again to refresh my memory. 😜
Thank you soo much!! Made my phone microphone sound sooo much better!
Awesome!
Thanks you for all these videos, I suffer with a bit of a lisp when talking with Cha and sh sounds ie the front end of saying channel or shower sounds terrible, please could you advise on how I could reduce these sounds?
You're welcome! You can try a little EQ, but if that's just how you talk, you might not be able to remove it.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks. I'll try that 😉👌
Thank you👍
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Toppp!!! Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Super helpful, Jason, thank you! I have 2 questions for you:
1 - when I'm scrubbing band 3 and 4 for "weird" sounds...what exactly are we looking for?
Thanks man! 👍
Hi Jason, great video thank you, just curious though, is it possible to save all these settings for the next time I shoot a video in the same spot?
You’re welcome! Yes you can save Presets, here’s a video on how to do it: th-cam.com/video/ll_9tz8Q7cQ/w-d-xo.html
