The Pound "death" really pissed me off. Oda needs to stop these fake out deaths. It adds nothing to the story, and only ruins tension for future battles, because now no matter how dramatic a Death, I won't care because that death will amount to nothing.

    • @Maltesfilm

It also totally undermines a really emotional part of the story on retrospect and rereads. Now when I reread WCI That scene will just be meaningless while before I really liked it. Pound being alive retroactively made WCI worse for me.

@@yanvorona2808 bon clay not being dead makes total sense I thought he was just being captured and being thrown in even worse torture and maybe being stuck in a level 5 cell like ace, crocmom and jinbe were
So I never got a vibe he was dieing
And any last words is a thing people say to people going to jail lol
As for the kinomon one that did make me mad I'm glad he is alive tho just they could have played off his liveing better maybe say he had law cut him in half again and the top half was just his devil fruit powers disguise placed on his legs and thats what was cut off
And all that time he was talking it was literally out of his butt lol
Instead of oh I guess you guys didnt put me back together properly and somehow they perfectly cut me at the exactly the same angle and spot that law did
Pound I dont even remember dieing so maybe it's just cause i figured he would be fine somehow so i didnt think much of his death so didnt even realize it was a "death" lol

      This
Pound's death was one of the best scenes of Whole Cake alongside Katakuri's final question to Luffy l'd still rank it below the scene of Pudding crying in the alley because this one recontextualized the entire arc and was probably the single most gut wrenching moment of the entire series. Sanji and her better god damn end together).
The idea of a father happily sacrificing his life to save the daughter he never could take in his arms and the grandson he will never be able to see grow up even if said daughter don't know who he is and why he sacrificed himself but he's still happy to oblige. This is really powerful stuff and one truly wonderful scene which I actually believed because he was a character minor enough to let die ........ but no, no he had to survive and meet his daughters and live happily ever after. F you, this scene was perfect and made for a really good and touching arc, this post credit ruins this entirely

The one thing I'm glad I was spoiled for in One Piece is Ace's death. My first experience of One Piece was watching Punk Hazard with my sister, and to satisfy my curiousity about Luffy and Law's relationship, my sister told me that "Law saved Luffy after Luffy's brother died." So when I started watching from the beginning and eventually met Ace, I knew he was going to die for real. The reason I'm glad that I knew ahead of time is because I could cry in full heartbreak when the experience went down. I've had the exact same qualms about Oda and his "deaths" where my emotions are mute and skeptical, but luckily, I was able to feel the full weight of Ace's death right from the beginning.

      1 It doesn't.
      2 He isn't even a prisoner.
He literally helped cause the biggest break-out in the history of Impel Down. Magellan was more than ready to kill Luffy when he hadn't even done anything besides break IN. Not even OUT.
Why would Magellan not be ready to kill Bon after he was the sole reason the whole break-out even succeeded?
You know, forget all of that. Magellan fucking killed random no-name prisoners. That dude's a maniac. He no doubt wanted to kill Bon, because he has definitely killed for less.
Plus, Bon ain't a prisoner. He's the queen of 5.5, which wouldn't be anything that Magellan would allow. Basically, he may be a 'prisoner', but he's living free in prison.

I think Oda doesn't like killing his characters in general. He only kills when it's a flashback and when it's important to the main story, like Ace, Whitebeard, and even Pedro.
Cases like Pell, Pagaya, Pound, Bon chan are only important for their own story, their death are not going to change anything in the main story, not even in their respective arc. So maybe Oda thinks that he prefers these people to have a good ending, because they don't deserve to die. It is just my opinion
In my case, I have been reading OP since 2009 and when I read Ace's death I believed it (we saw his body and also the vivre card disappeared) but yes, I remember some people thought it was not true. Probably because they have been watching / reading the series for the longest time.
Anyway, I think because of this issue, the alleged kills of Kanjuro, kiku, and kinemon aren't that shocking.
A part of me thinks they really died, but I still can't believe it 100%.

As a writer, I get this. Not every story is Attack on Titan, and not every writer is George R. R. Martin. Death doesn't automatically make it mature, and in some cases, it can even harm the story altogether.
A lot of people like to use death as a means of emotion in fiction, but it's much more complex than that. In some series like Dragon Ball, death may not mean the end of their character arc, or even the story. Heck, for most of the isekai genre, it means the beginning. For one character (like Kaido), death could be their entire motivation, while being left alive with shattered dreams could be a fate much worse than death.

Regarding the Moscato thing, in retrospect I feel like that may be the one fakeout death that is justifiable for the context it conveys. His death conveyed to the reader the idea that Big Mom is violent, ruthless, and willing to murder anyone, even her own children to get what she wants. The fact that his revival and recovery is left to Mont-d'Or could be intended to seed the idea that the Charlotte siblings are willing to go behind her back and act against her wishes for the sake of each other. Big Mom rules her crew and her children with fear, but the Charlotte siblings' loyalty is to each other, not to her; an idea that would later be more deeply explored with Katakuri.

There's this video that Artur did early this year where he talked about Luffy's true dream and that it is very likely to be the dream of having a huge party or whatever with everyone. maybe Oda wants every character that the straw hat crew has met during their adventure and has helped them to be present at this grand party or something. however, I still do think it's annoying that creates death scenes for these characters but maybe oda wants to make the readers very emotional like a death scene would but doesn't know any other way.

If there’s a strong potential for the character to have a purpose in the future, like Bellamy and probably Bon Clay (and maybe even Pound if Bege and the Firetank pirates make a comeback), this kind of thing is alright, not great, but not terrible. But yeah, a character who’s role and arc are at an end let them stay dead. For example, there’s no role Pell and Igaram can fill that can’t be filled by Chaka, who never “died” in the first place. let’s say Imu tried to have Rob Lucci assassinate Vivi at the Reverie, seeing that Pell, Chaka, and Igaram had been beaten by Lucci wouldn’t have any more impact than just Chaka being beaten, because we already know Lucci, or really any threat targeting Vivi at this point, is above the Alabasta guards’ level.

    • @obi_oma
      @obi_oma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think whether the character has a future purpose for the story or not, it's still bad. It's a cheap way of garnering emotion and if he wants his characters to be useful in the future, he should explain how they survived or just not have killed them off in the first place.

Ironic that Oda "cries wolf" about death when Usopp is literally the opposite of that entire concept. Everything he says seems like a fake out, only to turn out true in the end. We just need Usopp to say a character dies and then they actually will, even if it seemed like they survived.

For example: I was emotionally moved by Pell's sacrifice in Alabasta.
Now when I re-watch it again, I will feel absolutely nothing, because of Oda's trolling.

Every actual death so far has had strong narrative reason, except for Monet and Vergo (so far).
Ace and Whitebeard obviously died for great world impact, Absalom was only confirmed to be dead because his fruit was taken by someone in the first place, and Pedro forms the backbone for Carrot's storyline, and died to have at least some consequences for the entire arc.

@@tuvillo law has been one of the most important characters introduced into the story. Being a will of D holder and the conductor that has the story train rolling. He even has a straw hat style back story. Homie is basically one of the gang and therefore him getting his comeuppance on the people who has caused him strife is definitely worth adding to the kill count. Also, we're seeing more death in the new world. So much more. We literally watch all the donquixote execs die in front of us. Also Bellamy. If any deaths had narrative beats, it'd be those at the hands of law.
